Applying effects erases clip

When I apply some of the effects to a selected clip, the clip goes black and is erased. I'd been doing everything the same as always when this started happening out of nowhere. I've tried downloading imovie HD6 again but it's doing the same thing. Any advice?

Thanks for your questions:
I'd say 90% of the clips. I imported them from a miniDV tape. All original. My computer is nearly brand new with 2.8 GHz processor, 4MB cache, 4GB Memory and 448 GB available (according to "about this mac")
I haven't found rhyme or reason for those that cut to "all black" other than they all have the letterbox fx. The clip starts fine, then cuts to all black.
This has also happened in other projects I've done. Ken Burns was one of the other effects. I dare not add any other video fx for fear I'll kill the clips that are still hanging in there.
As for work-around, I am just not dumping my trash now. I am not closing the app at all. I am praying I can at least get this project in some form for export.
Where is the logical, systematic, simple explanation for why iMovie does this or how I can just get through this darn project with a cohesive finished result without opening it and finding several clips are now black. iMovie 06 has been around long enough - they should have an answer to this by now.
"Nothing Works" unless I want to test each and every setting, mouse click, nose pick, action and in what order. The "two things" tried include removing library files and repairing permissions a few times, converting each and every clip back to original (more than 75 clips), saving, reapplying effect, rerendering and resaving each clip.
Isn't that enough? I'm just a lowly consumer looking to piece together a little video of clips. I just want it to work.
And it is a "waste of time" as it has now taken me 4x longer to burn this dang thing than it should. I'm just bitter at this point.

  • Applying effect turns clip black

I've got 26 students working on their first projects, and this has popped up twice now.
Start with a clip on the timeline. Select it. Go to video effects. Choose an effect. Watch the preview. Click "apply." Wait for the render to complete. POOF! What once was a video clip is now silent black!
I tried restarting, deleting preferences, and permission repair. I even tried moving the project to an adjacent computer (a time-consuming process via gigabit ethernet). No luck.
No shortage of drive space... all the machines have an excess of 100 GB free.
In one case, the offending effect was "Earthquake." In the other case, the effect was "Fast / Slow / Reverse"
All the machines in question are Intel based iMacs. One is last year's white plastic 20" model, the others are brand-new aluminum 20". All upgraded to 2 GB RAM. All running OS 10.5.4 and iMovie 6.0.4
How do I make it work?
    Thanks!!

    Hi
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08)
    • Program miss-match: iMovie 5.0.2, up to Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK
    • Program miss-match: iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match: iMovie’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Screen must be set to Million-colors
    iMovie pref file resides:
Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named: com.apple.iMovie.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
From LKN 1935: (in this case = iMovie HD (5), I tried it all, but nothing worked.
Your answer (above) has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that
there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled
iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos)
to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before.

  • IMovie Applying Effects

    Hi all,
When i apply effects to clips, for example saturation, it applies it no problem, however as it gets towards the end of the clip it fades back to being 'uneffected' and then starts again on the next clip.
I have applied the effects for the correct duration of the clip and yet this still happens.
Am i doing something wrong as its very annoying!?
    Cheers!!!

Hi Jason - I have only a Histogram/Saturation effect which displays a histogram on the screen as an overlay. If Effect In and Effect Out are set to 00:00 then it should be applied throughout selected clips, without fades. Other effects I tested work the same.
Not sure why yours behave differently.

  • Feature Request: Apply effects to group of clip instances

I have been trying to supply this feature request into the Adobe feedback form. But it appeared that it was too large to be posted in a single feedback form. So I had to split it into three distinct feedback forms.
I don't want this feature request to get lost just because those three parts can't be joined back into a single feature request again. So I'd like to post it here, requesting for comments, too...
This feature request is about applying effects to more than one clip:
    a)
Currently, when selecting more than one clip, it's not possible to change any effects settings. The Effects Settings windows only shows a "Multiple clips selected" message.
Thus, I'd like to suggest the following:
When selecting more than one clip, the Effects Settings window should display any effects that apply to all the selected clips. Moreover, only those effect parameter values should be displayed having the same value across all selected effects. This on the other hand, of course, can only be displayed for effect parameters not having key frames/timing activated.
Editing any of the displayed effects' parameters should apply the new value to each currently selected clip instance.
    b)
Then again, when using key frame/timing activated effect parameters, it is currently not possible to apply such effect to more than a clip, too. To apply such animated effects to more than one clip it is currently necessary to nest those clips into a separate sequence.
Thus, I'd like to suggest the following improvement:
It should be possible to apply effects not only to clips but also to a group of clips (Menu Clip > Group).
Activating animation/key framing to any of the effect settings of those effects being assigned to a clip group (in contrast to those effects assigned to any clip instance contained in the the group) will allow to add key frames spanning all clips of the group.
This way it will be possible to easily create, e.g., a zoom effect spanning several clips.
If there are clips in-between those belonging to the group, the group's effects won't be applied to those clips not belonging to the group. However, the effects' parameter values are continued to be calculated in the background.
So this example would be true:
    - Available clips:
    | a | b | c | d | e |
    - Clips grouped into a Clip Group:
    | a |   | c |   | e |
    - Zoom video effect applied to the group, having two key frames added:
    Key frame #1 = beginning of clip | a |
    Key frame #2 = end of clip | e |
Zoom value of key frame #1 = 100%
Zoom value of key frame #2 = 400%
--> So this will be the approximated calculated zoom value when the timeline reaches following points in time:
    Beginning of clip | a |:     100%
    End of clip       | a |:     132%
    Beginning of clip | b |: (100%)
    End of clip       | b |: (100%)
    Beginning of clip | c |:     174%
    End of clip       | c |:     230%
    Beginning of clip | d |: (100%)
    End of clip       | d |: (100%)
    Beginning of clip | e |:     303%
    End of clip       | e |:     400%
(Unfortunately, this forum doesn't allow me to apply any kind of formatting to the example above. So I can't apply a monospace font or colouring )
When a group gets ungrouped (Menu Clip > Ungroup), effects that had been applied to the group will be assigned to each individual clip of the group. For effect parameters that had key frames/animation activated, key frames will be created at the beginning and end of each of the clips. The previously calculated values will now be inserted at each automatically created key frame to mimic the grouped effect behaviour. This operation then would finalize the Ungroup operation involving clip group effects.

You could combine the Next/Previous Edit commands with either the Apply Video Transition shortcut or with a paste command if you had copied the transition you want.
OR... much easier if all you want is a bunch of consistent fade ins/fade outs...
On a single clip, keyframe opacity to create a fade in from the in point of the clip at the duration you like, e.g. 30 frames. Right click Opacity, and select Save Preset; give it a name, e.g. Fade In 30 Frames and set it to Anchor to In Point. Reset the effect and delete the keyframes, and then repeat this to create a fade out. Go to the out point of the clip, set keyframes, and once again, right-click Opacity and Save Preset; this time call it something like Fade Out 30 Frames and set it to Anchor to Out Point.
Now, you can simply select all of your clips in the sequence, and apply these presets by dragging them to the selection. Even though you created two presets, because you can only have one instance of Opacity on a clip, the keyframes from both presets will be added to that single effect. You have to do this with two presets--if you do it with one and use Scale, the keyframes will stretch out or compress to maintain a relative duration instead of an absolute duration.

  • Replace Footage with Current Effects and Attributes Applied to New Clip

I made a mock-up commercial with comp videos from a website and now need to replace them with the paid versions of the clips. Is there an easy way to replace the footage and keep all the attributes and effects I put on the comps? I tried the replace function but fcp told me "Insufficient content for edit."

Tom's right there, you can't replace a ten-seconds clip with an eightsecond clip.
But also look up the paste attributes function. This allows you to keep all of your attributes while replacing just the media.
*Copying and Pasting Specific Clip Attributes*
*Clip attributes are all the parameter settings applied to a clip—for example, motion parameter settings, audio and video filters and their parameter settings, speed parameter settings, and so on. Copying and pasting selected clip attributes is a quick way to add nearly any attribute to other clips in an edited sequence. You can copy motion paths, frame cropping, and animated filter effects from one video clip to another.*
*Suppose you have just applied three filters and a speed setting to one clip, and you decide that you want exactly the same effects to be applied to several other clips in the sequence. Instead of re-creating each setting clip by clip, you can simply copy the first clip, select the other clips, and paste only the specific settings you want into all of them simultaneously.*
*When you copy a clip from the Timeline, you also copy all of its attributes. Instead of pasting duplicates of the clip you copied with all of its attributes, you can:*
*Paste specific video or audio attributes that you want into other clips in your sequence.*
*Paste only the clip’s video or audio content, with none of the attributes, so that the content of a clip is replaced. In other words, you can replace the clip but keep the parameter settings of the original clip.*

  • Applying effects to multiple clips or an entire sequence on a separate video track

I'm looking for an easy way to apply effects on a separate video track.  In AVID I would just drag and drop the effect preset onto a blank layer.  Or if I wanted the clip to affect just a few clips, I would add two edits (similar to razor blade) on a separate video track and drag the effect preset between those edit points.  Is there a way to do this in Premiere Pro?  Running CS 5.0.4.  Thanks for the help!

Well, depending on what you want to do, you might actually be able to use a clip instance of one sort or another.
One option is Transparent Video (File > New > Transparent Video); by itself, Trans. Video doesn't do anything, but some effects can be applied to it and will generate an output. This doesn't work with all effects, so you'll have to experiment. Check here for more: Create a transparent video clip
Another option would be to use a Color Matte (File > New > Color Matte) or Black Video (File > New > Black Video) clip. These do have an effect by themselves, so you could apply any effect you wanted to them, and then possibly use a Blending Mode to apply it. Black Video is common for this purpose, with something like the Add mode. Again, not perfect, but it will depend on the effect you're trying to achieve.
Unfortunately, we don't have anything like AE's adjustment layers in Premiere Pro. That would solve your problem, quickly.

  • Best practice regarding work flow (cutting, applying effects, exporting etc)

    Hi!
I've been asked to shoot and edit a music video for a friend of mine, and I'm trying to figure out the best way to manage this project in PrE (in what order to do things and so on). I have a picture in my head which make sence, but I'd like to have it confirmed. If you've been following the "Very disappointed with Premiere Elements" thread, you know I'm not a fan of how the applying of effects works, when having a lot of cuts between scenes and clips etc. A few of the steps below is meant to make that process more effective.
So, here's my idea, from the begining and in detail:
    1. Download the appropriate clips from the camera (in this case 1280x720, H.264 mov's from an EOS 500D).
    2. Create a PrE-project for each clip and maybe trim the in and outs a bit, if needed.
    3. Export each clip to uncompressed avi's.
    4. Create the main project file and import all the uncompressed avi's.
    5. Insert the clips in on appropriate tracks in the timeline.
    6. Do all the cutting, triming and sync as complete as possible, without thinking about effects.
    7. When finished, open up each of the smaller clip projects and add the desired effects. This will mainly include contrasts, color corrections, noise etc, in order to get the right look and feel to each clip/scene.
    8. Again, export the clips to uncompressed avi's and overwrite the previous versions.
    9. Open up the main project, which now should contain the clips with look-and-feel effects visible.
    10. Add some additional effects if needed.
    11. Export/share, and you're done.
Of course I will end up going back and forth through these steps anyway, but as a basic plan it seems reasonable. I see three main positive aspects:
    1. The look-and-feel effects will be applied on the raw material, before the converting process. This should result in a slightly better quality. Perhaps not noticeable, but anyway.
    2. The main project will be more CPU friendly and easier to work with.
    3. If I want to tweek the look-and-feel effect to a clip/scene, I don't have to do it on every split (I will have a lot of splits, so applying and changing the effect parameters will be time consuming and ineffective). Of course, opening up the clip's specific project, changing the effect and then export to avi, will also take time, but point 1 and 2 makes up for that.
Have in mind that it is a music video project, to put things in the right context. We'll probably have a few parallel stories/scenes, with lots of cutting in and out between them. The timeline will probably look insane.
So, am I thinking in the right direction here? Any traps I might fall into along the way?
    Regards
    Fredrik

    Fredrik,
Though similar to your workflow, here is how I would do it.
Import those "raw" Clips into a Project, and do my Trimming in that Project, relying on the Source Monitor to establish the In & Out Points for each, and also using different Instances of any longer "master Clip.". I would also do my CC (Color Correction), and all density (Levels, etc.) Effects here. Do not Trim too closely, as you will want to make sure that you have adequate Handles to work with later on.
Use the WAB (Work Area Bar) to Export the material that I needed in "chunks," using either Lagarith Lossless CODEC, or UT Lossless CODEC *
Import my music into a new Project and listen over and over, making notes on what visuals (those Exported/Shared Clips from above) I have at my disposal. At this point, I would also be making notes as to some of the Effects that I felt went with the music, based on my knowledge of the available visuals.
Import my Exported/Shared, color graded Clips.
Assemble those Clips, and Trim even more.
Watch and listen carefully, going back to my notes.
    Apply any additional Effects now.
    Watch and listen carefully.
Tighten any edits, adjust any applied Effects, and perhaps add (or remove existing) more Effects.
    Watch and listen carefully.
Output an "approval" AV for the band/client.
    Tweak, as is necessary.
    Output "final approval" AV.
    Tweak, as is necessary.
    Export/Share, to desired delivery formats.
    Invoice the client.
    Cash check.
    Declare "wine-thirty."
This is very similar to your proposed workflow.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
    * I have used Lagarith Lossless CODEC with my PrE 4.0, but have not tried UT. Both work fine in PrPro, so I assume that UT Lossless will work in PrE too. These CODEC's are fairly quick in processing/Exporting, and offer the benefit of smaller files, than Uncompressed AVI. They are visually lossless. The resultant files will NOT be tiny, so one would still need a good amount of HDD space. Neither CODEC introduces any artifacts, or color degredation.

  • Video filters not working when applied to sequence clips

I have looked through the forums and haven't found the solution to my problem. I am having problems with video filters on clips in the timeline. I have footage that needs color correction. In the viewer I created a 3 way filter for one clip, saved it, and applied to all clips in the browser. They all open corrected in the viewer. (I did this because i was reviewing the clips with my client).
When I put the clip in the timeline it does not indicate it needs a render, the filter does not appear on the clip, but when I double click and open the sequence clip in the viewer the color correction tab is there. I've removed attributes and tried again several times, both using the menu with the clip selected, and by doulbleclicking the clip into the viewer and apply the filter there. The tab is always there but the filter does not appear on the clip. It only appears when the process is done to clips from the browser inthe viewer. I've checked the RT for unlimted, I've done a render all video, I've checked settings under the render tab and filters is checked. I've gone into another project and have the same problem in a different project with different clips. I had a recent project where I used a blur effect and it worked fine. My video is DV and my sequence settings are DV NTSC.
I've run out of my ideas and comments from ither threads. What is my next troubleshoot? Should I delete preferecnes? I haven't done that with FCP, can I do it myself or use Rescue? Could that create other problems for me? Any other ideas?
I work in Afghanistan and have no resources here for any Mac support besides books and forums.
    Thanks

    Hey Catrina
Not sure what the issue is with your application of the 3-Way Color Corrector in the Browser. My guess, is that perhaps you only thought you applied the "saved" instance of the 3-way corrector but instead applied a default neutral instance of the corrector.  How did you save the correction you applied to the other instances?  A good method is, having applied and tweaked it as needed to a sample clip instance, you can drag a copy of it out of the clip's Filter tab and drop it directly into your Browser window.  To check, then double click that Browser instance of the corrector to open it in the Viewer window and see if has the corrections settings as expected and no the default ones. If so, go ahead and drag it to another clip instance in the Browser and then drag that clip to your sequence ... has the correction "stuck" bow? But while we figure it out, for now, why not just apply the saved correction directly to the clips in the sequence?  Regarding trashing your preferences ... download Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion.  Very straightforward to use.

  • Is there a way to apply LUTS to clips while in Adobe Media Encoder

is there a way to apply LUTS to clips while in Adobe Media Encoder? We have many  camera clips needing luts applied then wrapped to ProRes422 for editing. right now we are using after effects, rendering out then wrapping in Encoder, but this workflow is quite time consuming. We've tried rendering proRes out of AE but the boss isn't happy with the results without also going through Encoder.

No, there is not a way to apply color changes (e.g., using LUTs) in Adobe Media Encoder. Do this in After Effects, but just add your After Effects compositions directly to the Adobe Media Encoder encoding queue (e.g., by choosing File > Add After Effects Composition in the AME UI).

Everything in iMovie HD 6 seems to work fine apart from not being able to apply effects. I've tried most of the effects. I have no problems changing settings. It even renders or looks like it's rendering but nothing changes with the clip. It's the same as it was before.
    Can anyone help?

    same thing.
had my imac harddrive replaced and now the quartz composer effects dont work. I've been researching for the past 3 hours. Does anyone have the answer to this.
I'm led to believe it has to do with not having the latest codecs? or something is off with my quartz composer (tho i see it renderin in preview) or this is just a bug that no one has the answer to.

  • Is it possible to apply effects at an increasing rate

I guess i would like is to apply effects like reverb or detune that start off suttle and reach a peak i choose and contuniue till i want them to either fade away or stop? i believe this would be some kind of morphing or variable intensity included with an effect.

    Sorry... Clicked send too soon.
To get a similar Wet/Dry effect you could copy the clips to another track and add the full effects to that.  Then use the gain/volume automation to set the level of effects on the track you created.
In some effects you can set the effect level to 100% and the dry mix to 0% and then just use the tracks Automation to mix the effect. But some effects mix the dry sound without giving you control of how much.  In that case, you may need to adjust the gain/volume automation of the original dry track to match the levels in the mix.
Ok... I think I got that right...

  • Problem applying effects

I am having trouble applying video transitions between a few clips, other clips there is no problem. When it doesn't work I get a message that says "insufficient content for edit". The material I am working with I believe has enough of a handle to apply effects.
Do any of you have any suggestions?

  • Created effect on clip in timeline. Want to save it for use later..

I realize I can't drag a clip from the Timeline into the Event Library. So frustrating. So how do I go about setting that clip aside with the effects I have applied so I can use it later in various places in my timeline. I don't want it in the timeline now. I want to use it later with the effects I have created, or is that not possible?

I can't seem to do any of that in the event library. As far as I can tell, I can only add effects to clips in the timeline.  I have the clip in the timeline and I have created effects. Now I want to remove it from the timeline and not lose the time I have spent creating those effects. I don't want it cluttering up my timeline and I don't want to have to redo all the effects. Is there no way to do this? I'm assuming not.  I did find that I could create another event and copy/paste a clip into the event and "save" for later use that way, which seems a really lousy kludge.
If I'm correct that there is no way to save a clip from the timeline for later use, do you think this is just a temporary failing or just part of the way FCPx will always work. I am continuing to explore how FCPX deals with editing and playing with unimportant footage and keep hitting walls like this. I try to figure out if it's just a paradigm shift I need to make but things like this and the inability to copy/paste attributes and such just make me crazy. I'm working hard to move from the unsupported FCPStudio and I know that Premiere will have its own "make me crazy" issues but these limitations as compared to FCP Studio are really frustrating and I just can't tell when I run into problems that will be addressed in a .X release vs problems that are simply "how it's always going to work in FCPX".

  • Applying Effects to a Selection

I think I must be missing something and I'd swear I've done this before. Working on an audio project in the timeline and selecting a portion of the waveform to apply an effect... all is good until the clip is flattened. After the flatten the effect is applied to the entire clip. What's the deal? I am not sending this over from FCP. I am opening an AIFF and trying to add a plug-in just to the selected area. Would someone please describe the workflow or explain why the effect ultimately applies itself to the entire clip. Thanks!
    G5, Dual 2, 2.5GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Here's a step-by-step for applying effects to a region of a file:
-Open the file in the waveform editor
-click-drag across the waveform to select the region
-process->Effects->whatever effect you want...to apply an effect to the selection
The effect is only applied to the selected region.
If you applied an effect that has a long tail (e.g. a reverb or a delay) then you will see the impact carry on after the right-hand edge of the selection area--that's just the way these sort of effects work.
If you really want a reverb within the selection region with no tail outside of the selection region, then copy the file, apply the reverb to the selection region, copy the selection region, then go to the un-effected file, put the playhead at the start of where your selection was and select edit->paste special->paste mix and select 100% clipboard and 0% original and you'll get what you want. It might help to put markers at the start and the end of the selection before you copy the file.
    I hope that helps.
