File Associations Whacked after RP 10 Install

We have a library of streaming video files that were made in Quicktime (.MOV files), on a local server and before installing Real Player 10, typing in the appropriate URL to IE would launch QT and play the file.
Now, when I attempt the same operation, RP 10 loads and then bombs out, saying it can't play the content. When I installed RP 10 I specifically chose to only have RP play Real-specific content. I went back, re-selected the file types (not choosing RTSP), and things still won't work. I verified that the RTSP file type was correctly chosen in Quicktime, but still no go. I reinstalled Quicktime 6.5.2, ensuring that the correct file types were chosen (including RTSP), but that didn't help. I then went into the Win XP registry on a test machine, found the Real entries for parameters such as "AttemptRTSPviaHTTP" and changed them from 1 to 0. Still no go. Finally I went into Windows File Associations and found that RP was set as the "owner" for the file type RTSP. I tried changing that to Quicktime and still cannot make it work.
How do I wrest control of the RTSP file type away from RP and set it back successfully to Quicktime?

  • File Association issues after Adobe Reader XI Upgrade

After an upgrade to AdobeReader XI, pdf file association fails in outlook, and some desktops.Ftype & assoc didnt fix the issue.

2-Association using default programs in control panel also didnt work......it continued to show acrobat as an unknown program

Use "LEAVE_PDFOWNERSHIP=YES" in the command line when installing Adobe Reader to preserve PDF Ownership!

  • Missing Icons, unable to set file association properly after upgrade to CS6

I am working with a client that had CS3 on Windows XP and upgraded to CS 5.5, and now has upgraded that to CS6. Her file associations were all set back to CS3, even though it shows that CS3 is uninstalled. I manually changed them and it will open the INDesign files but I cannot get icons to show for anything. I can see the icons in the shell folder and I can pick one but it will not show in Windows. Is there a way to clean up her system easily and make CS6 the default Adobe - and make sure none of the others have lingering file associations or references? I dont think they uninstalled all the way.

There is no easy way. you will have to clean out all file associations and reinstate them manually. You are simply exceeding the context handlers, a limitation in the operating system itself and usualyl a sign of too many programs trying to link their actions to a file association liek right-click menu entries for compression tools, virus scanners, viewers etc.

The upgrade itself went smoothly. But now some files won't won't open with the program they're supposed to open with--even if I do open with>other> and then click the "always open with" box.

  • File association error with office 2007 documents

I recently upgraded from office 2003 to office 2007 and now Bridge CS3 will not open my office documents with office 2007. I looked in the file associations preferences and did not see doc, docx, xls, xlsx, etc. in there at all. I have also looked at re-installing just Bridge CS3 but there is not an option for that when I put in the installation discs.
    Please help...

This is not a Bridge problem! You would need to get it working from explorer first, you need to setup the file associations! after you have done that you should be able to open your documents from Explorer and Bridge.

  • File Associations are whacked

I've got system and a user on that system where all his file associations are whacked.
Even if I right click on a file to associate it with a program the file association doesn't stick.
Is there a way to reset all his file associations?
For the most part he can't open any files by double clicking them.
It's Solaris 10 JDS if that helps.
I've tried update-mime-database /usr/share/mime/ but that doesn't fix his problems.

Fixed it. Somehow the perms got whacked on /usr/share/mime and it wasn't world readable.
I installed OpenOffice 3.0 a couple weeks back, must of somehow changed the perms on that dir when the install did an update-mime-database.

  • Cs6 install, file association windows7

installed cs6 apps from the cloud including bridge.  How come it hasn't taken over the file assocations from cs5?  (I have all my adobe filetypes set to open in bridge). Woudn't it make sense to make the installer check and ask if we wanted cs6 to take over those associations?
Is there a quick way to get all adobe filetypes to open in bridge cs6 or am I going to have to do it manually?

There is no exchange of setting between versions, they are independant.
CS6 should set its file associations automatically.  You can try pressing the radio button to "reset to default associations".
If you uninstalled CS5 after you installed CS6 you may have corrupted your file associations.

  • File associations change when new packages are installed (GNOME)

    Hello!
Imagine I set Geany to open text files. It works, I just double click the files and they open with Geany. When I install Wine/Gedit/whatever... it overwrites my file association with Geany, opening it by default with notepad.exe/gedit/whatever.
    Can someone help me?
    Thanks, acmps

I don't know why this happens sometimes after installing or messing around with wine, but I can also confirm multiple, false entries in that associations-list.
But I know how to get rid of it after it happened (concerning these entries in my gnome-open-dialogue):
Delete the files which fit in ~/.local/share/applications/* or have a look at mimeapps.list which is also located there

  • Installing Mavericks & keeping iWork09 file association

I have ML/iWork 09 and I am installing Mavericks.  What's the best way to keep files associated with iWork 09?
The apps are in the /Applications/iWork09 so hopefully Mavericks will not overwrite them.  My plan is to either
    1. After installing Mavericks, go to a pages file and enter the full path to iWork09/Pages.app plus "change all"
    or
    2. Rename iWork09/Pages.app -> iWork09/Pages09.app and repeat 1.
I had similar problems with iLife when upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion (if I remeber correctly).  Turned out iPhoto09 and iPhoto11 easily coexisted but not the iMovies.  I could never use iMovie09 again. That's because of some details (app sigantures of imovie apps were identical I think).
Back to the new iWork, any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for advice, I will certainly not update.  I experimented with Numbers (which I do not use or need) and it created a mess.
I have CD-iWork 09. Used to get updates through Software Update, but only in Lion.  Apple orphaned CD-iWork 09 in ML.  The App Store - iWork 09 was considerd to be a separate program in ML, and I did not buy it. The button in the App Store said "buy $20" or so.  Thus there was no confusion which program was being updated, as there were no updates.
After installed Mavericks, there were NO Pages, Numbers, or Keynote in /Applications. Only the old ones in /Applications/iWork09.  However, the 3 programs showed up in App Store updates, with an "update" button next to them, but not under "purchases".  Also, I located them in the App Store, and the only option was "update", not "download".
So, unlike ML, Mavericks decided that AppStore-Numbers-3 is an update to CD-Numbers-2.3 and I am entitled to an update.  So I updated it.  But when I opened iWork09/Numbers.app, it was still 2.3.   However, the modified date changed to the download time.
So far, no complaints. It's actually good that it did not overwrite the old app. Maybe it just touched iWork09/Numbers.app to get things in sync.  Then I look again in the app store, and now it did say "download" next to Numbers.  This put Numbers-3 in /Applications.  Also, Numbers showed up in the App Store purchases.
So everything worked out fine? Not really. this is what I see in the App Store updates now. Keeps prompting me to update. Already did it once, it was happy for a while, only to come up with a new "update button".

  • Fresh Leopard install gone Wrong - PKG Files Associated with Safari

I just purchased a used Macbook Core 2 Duo 2.0ghz that came with Tiger installed. I upgraded to Leopard by zeroing the hard drive and reinstalling Leopard and all updates.
The problem I am running into is that for some reason, and PKG files downloaded to install programs (i.e. Skype) will not install because the PKG file is associated with Safari. I check on my Mac Pro, and it has PKG files associated with "Installer". I tried to find "Installer" as a program on the Macbook but had no luck. Any ideas? With this being a fresh install I have NO idea how this happened. Any help is most appreciated. Thanks.

Hmm, I tried to associate a file with the Installer, but wasn't able to get the system to tell me where it is. There is a command line version of the installer in /usr/sbin/, and that may be what the system uses under the hood, but I couldn't find a way to get to that either (I was trying to do this in the Get Info pane, under Open With).
I don't know why pkg is associated with Safari. It could be that your launch services database got hosed somehow during your upgrade. If you're willing try something, it might be that rebuilding your launch services database will help. From the command line, run this command:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
(the above should all be on one line). This will reset, then rebuild the database. Although I don't think it's strictly necessary, restarting your machine after this command has run successfully would probably be a good idea.

  • File associations in Bridge CC after updating to CC 2014

I am facing a problem with the file association settings in Bridge CC after having updated my other creative suite programs to version CC 2014.
In previous version I had the option when opening eg. PDF file to chose "open with", and then chose Illustrator or Photoshop. This option is no longer available. When using the Preference menu under file association I can only change the default settings to be either Acrobat or for some reason Firefox. When browsing for Illustrator or Photoshop and choosing the program the PDF file will only open in Illustrator or Photoshop as default not Acrobat as it is suppose to. Does anybody have a solution to this problem.

Thank you for the answer, but is doesn't fix the problem. The explorer settings lets me open pdf files in Acrobat, Illustrator or Photoshop.
The problem is that Bridge doesn't allow me to open pdf files in Illustrator.
When trying to solve the problem by altering the file type association settings, browsing and choosing Illustrator CC 2014, the pdf files will then open by default in Illustrator, and this is not what i want. I want the option to chose, open with Illustrator, and still have Acrobat as the default program.
Anybody know how to fix this?

    Hi Donald,
No it doesn't erase anything by default, it does what we used to call an  Archive and Install feature, which can give you a new OS, yet preserve your files and settings if you have enough room on your HD...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
But it does it automatically unless you specifically erase the Disk, but will replace Tiger completely for the OS & several Apple Apps like Safari, Mail, etc, yet preserve your old settings for those!
If you think you may need Tiger to run any APPs that do not work in SL/10.6, then clone or backup first.
I would recomend 2 things before installing though...
Make sure you have enough RAM & HD space.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the new Mac OS X SL/10.6 Install Disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

  • Checking out Pdf files to Local draft Folder option no longer works after office 2013 installed.

Checking out Pdf files to Local draft Folder option no longer works after office 2013 installed.
    Summary :
We are using SharePoint 2010 Ent edition and users were able to checkout Pdf files similar to local drafts folder like any other office file without any problem when they used office 2010.
    i.e
Unfortunately ever since their machines upgraded with office 2013 recently , this functionality completely stopped working for PDF files. This has now become a big problem for the users when it comes to check out and replace PDF files.
All browser plugins required for this functionality (i.e    SharePoint OpenDocuments Class ) are all available and active. All document libraries are configured to Checkout is required for editing files. Browser version
used at the moment is IE9 (32 bit) version with windows 7.
Can anyone please help with this issue and any help to get away with this problem is much appreciated.

    Hi,
Based on your description, my understanding is that the PDF files cannot be checked out to local drafts folder after Office 2013 is installed.
Did this issue occur with Office files?
I recommend to check if the Office files can be checked out to local drafts folder with Office 2013.
And it is recommended to use Office 2010 with SharePoint 2010 for best practice.
    Thanks,
    Victoria
