File path problems between mac and PC

hi
I'm having some issues with file paths, done a lot of searching online, here and on creative cow and no answers to be found (same question asked a few times though).
I'm working on projects on a MAC and then collecting files (project only) to a watch folder on a PC for rendering.
Most of the really big files (.R3D) are located locally on the PC but a few files are on a server.
I can work on them fine on my Mac but when the project comes across to the PC it can find the files located on one of its drives (the same drive as the project source folder) but loses the filepath to the server and to the other internal drive as well.
I have to open the project on the PC and repoint to the missing footage and then save which is a real pain in the #@$% and kind of defeats the purpose of the distributed rendering.
how can I set absolute paths for the PCs from my MAC ????
cheers../daniel

Hey, sorry Mylenium, but this statement is not true. I was almost convinced to give up after reading this, but I managed to make a working conversion tool shortly after.
This is the method in After Effects, I am pretty sure that it can work in the rest of the adobe suite as well.
All you need to do to get the paths to update to windows format is to:
1. Select "Save as xml" and save an .aepx.
2. Open the .aepx in text edit.
3. Perform a find for "/Volumes" and replace with "//<MountPointOnThePC>" (for example I have the drive as a network drive on the pc so I swap the <MountPointOnThePC> to the name of my mac as that is the path on the pc machine)
4. Perform another find for "MacPOSIX" and replace with "Win"
5. Save your file and you will be able to open in on a pc with all the files online.
Disclaimer, I built this to work on my set up using a mac server and a pc render farm for after effects. Please back up your projects before opening them and editing them.
Hope this helps anyone else trying to do the same.

I recently got a Time Machine to replace my flaky Linksys Wireless N router and since I've done that I can't connect to my PC running Windows XP and was able to before. I have made sure my firewall settings are correct and have gone through many different settings on Time Machine but still no luck.
I have my PC directly connected via ethernet to the Time Machine and my Mac is wireless. I'm able to ping the IP address of the Mac from my PC but can't ping in the opposite way.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

i'm running os x snow leopard on one partition and windows 7 on another on a 2008 mbp. whenever i log into windows and then get back onto mac, my time is completely off. i can temporarily fix it by removing the local time file, which resets it, but every time i log into windows and back i get the same problem. i've tried turning off the automatic time zone, tried turning off auto everything and just setting the time myself and it always goes back to being messed up after a trip to the windows partition.

  • Conversion Problems between Mac and Windows

I work in a school district that is running an old version of Adobe Photoshop CS3 in a Macintosh environment.  The Macs are old 10.4.11 machines that would not print.  So, I set up a Windows Server with Macintosh accessible folders and copied files to this server.  I then had newer Windows 7 client machines availabe and copied the files over to their client machines.  Some of the files came over to Windows as CS3, but others didn't.  They show up as "File" in the format and not as CS3.  Is there a workaround for this, or another way to get these files to Windows?
    Thanks.

Make sure proper file extensions (e.g., .psd, .jpg, .png, etc.) are put on each file.  Depending on settings, Mac users don't always do that.
On your Windows systems, disable the [ ] Hide file extensions for known file types setting in Folder Options, then the problem will become obvious.

  • Connection key compatibility problem between Mac and Windows

I'm wondering if anyone has had this problem and came up with a work-around?
We are rolling out Contribute CS5 to some employees.
The designers (I'm one of them) are all on Macs. Everyone else is on Windows XP.
We are connecting to our sites via local/network. IT didn't want to set up FTP (I won't go into why right now).
So, here is where the problem is... We set up the site and do the first connection on our Macs. Then when we send out a site key, to a Windows user, the key is no good. This is because Macs handle paths to network shares differently than Windows does.
I thought the solution would be to customize the key with the Windows share path before sending it to the Windows users. However, Contribute wants to verify the path before letting me continute to make a customized key. And that is where I'm stuck. Is there a solution to this - besides switching to FTP?
    Thanks,

  • How can I share files in airdrop between mac and phone without having setting turned to "everyone"?

I'm trying to utlitise airdrop between my MBP and iPhone 5s. I have the same icloud account for both, but when I have airdrop set to "contacts only" on either device the other is not visible. I have to set either device that I am trying to send to as visible to Everyone for it to show up on the other.
I have myself in my contact book as well so I should technically come up as a contact I would think? I'd rather not have to have visibility set to "everyone" if I can help it.
    Any advice?

First of all, to troubleshoot the problem it would help to put some filepath indicators at each point so that you can see what is going on. Also, in your exe having an error dialog "Simple Error Handler.vi" to let you know what LabVIEW didn't like in the exe.
Now, when you run a top level ("Main.vi") and use the "Current VI's Path " in the development mode it returns <Filepath>\"Current path"\Main.vi. So stripping once will get you to  <Filepath>\"Current path" .    Now if you make it into an exe the "Current VI's Path" returns <Filepath>\"Current path"\"Name.exe"\Main.vi so you are "nested" one deeper.
I use the following construct to determine whether the vi is being used as in the development environment or as an exe, the parse the path accordingly, although in this instance it is used to supply different directory names to a little more complex file system.

  • Difference of links path between Mac and Windows

We currently use an InDesign Server solution on Mac to generate our PDF. InDesign files are created on Mac and our InDesign server points to volumes where are stored links. On Mac, the path looks like this:
    VOLUME:FOLDER_1:SUBFOLDER_1:SUBFOLDER_2:LINK_NAME.
We consider to migrate our InDesign server onto Windows. So I began some tests on a client version and the same InDesign file opened on Windows and whose links are stored in the same place opens with missing links as the path on Windows looks like this: volume_name\volume\FOLDER_1\SUBFOLDER_1\SUBFOLDER_2\LINK_NAME
So I have to relink manually, which is impossible in our workflow.
Does anyone know if we may encounter the same problem with a server version? If yes, do you know a script that automatically relink image files when InDesign files will be opened by InDesign Server?

I don't personally have much experience relinking across platforms. (We use Windows servers although I use Mac locally.) But, here's what info I can provide:
File paths in InDesign can be specified in 2 ways. One is platform-specific paths, and the second is URI notation. The URI notation is the same cross-platform, but even so, I imagine the volume names are different as well. Specifying the URIs in an InDesign file would prove to be challenging as well, although you can easily specify it in an IDML file.
Another avenue to explore would be to specify relative paths. By default InDesign writes absolute paths, but relative paths are supported. If I'm not mistaken, that's what the InDesign package functionality does.
Your best bet will probably be to run a script when the document loads on the machine for the first time and loop through all the links and change the paths to the correct location.

  • Sharing linked files between mac and pc

    Dear Community and AI Support,
My team is trying to share AI files between Macs and PCs.  That works fine until we have Linked assets.  Once we have linked assets, AI either forgets to, or is unable to, let us relink more than one of the linked files.  We can't edit the links or even delete them.  The linked files are just ignored, leaving the file half empty.
We've tried hacking the paths directly in the .AI file, hoping to eventually write a perl script to help us switch back and forth. but no luck.  We assume there is a checksum or crc code or hash, etc..., as AI won't even try to open the file after that.
But to clarify the issue. here is an example of the Mac and PC links we need to switch between using an excerpt from the AI file.  These are valid, working directories on both platforms.

ooohhhhh very interesting.  I did a find and replace on all the strings, but no dice.  I didn't think to look at those types of data.  But now that you have mentioned it, perhaps I'll do a diff on the same file saved on both platforms to see what has been changed.  Should have already thought of it, but your note has made me check my assumptions.

  • I have problems transferring files from PC to Mac and from Mac to Mac

I have problems transferring files from PC to Mac, and from Mac to Mac.  PC to PC is fine.  Nothing but problems with the Mac.  One example:
While working on my PC, I open shared folders on an external HDD connected to the Mac.  I click on paste to move the files.  I get an error after a few seconds to a minute of trying to move several files from my PC Win 7 to Mac OS Maverick, that there is a file already at the destination on Mac. This statement is true, but it was just put there because I am copying them over in that same action.  It reads 0Kb and wasn't there before I started.  Then I get an error: The Action Cannot be completed because the folder is open in another program.  Close the folder or file and try again..
Whether I click on it a bunch right of way or wait, it still takes about 45 seconds. I have to do it with every file and it only happens when copying from a PC to Mac.  I have even restarted both computers so nothing is using any files.  If I copy one file at a time, I don't get any error.
So I have one file to move, no problem.  If move 5 files, The first will go fine, but it shows all 5 files in folder at once.  All other files than the first show 0kb. I get the file already existing error once it starts the second file transfer, and I select move and replace.  Then I get The Action Cannot be completed because the folder is open in another program.  I wait or click repeatedly until it starts to move file.  That file will then show something other than 0kb.  When it is done, the error process starts all over.  I tried checking the PC with unlocker, but the files do not show themselves locked on the PC.

Its not only French. Even certain characters in English will come across as gobblydegook from 1 platform to another. I see this in emails that likely were composed in Word & the characters don't come across.
Not sure if this is still true, but years ago someone explained that there is a standard character set & then I think its extended characters & those vary from platform to platform or language to language, etc.

  • Share files between Mac and Windows in same iMac with boot camp

    Hello,
I am new in using Mac and recently I buy a IMac 24" model.
I used to use PC a long time with a lot of old document.
I want to install Windows XP with boot camp.
But I also want to share my documents, music, video files between Mac and Windows in same iMac.
    How can I do this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Eric

Hi Eric and welcome to Discussions and the Apple world.
Mac OSX can read and write from Windows partitions (like the BootCamp Windows partition you are about to create) when using FAT32 as file system for Windows.
However with FAT32 you are limited to a partition size of 32GB.
Mac OSX can also read from Windows partitions that uses the NTFS file system, but it can not write to them unless you use a third-party helper like either Paragons NTFS for Mac http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/ or NTFS-3G http://www.ntfs-3g.org/
Windows can not even see or use a Mac OSX partition without additional help by MacDrive http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/

  • File transfer between Mac and Windows

I am running Windows on my Mac and I transfer files between mac and Windows alot using my external hard drive. I was wondering if there was an easier way to do this than having to use my external hard drive like a networking solution or something. Thanks...

i also run windows on my mac (for work). The issue i had was that when booted in osx, i could see the windows partition, and copy files FROM it to the mac side, but i could not copy files TO the windows partition.
As i understand it, this is because the apple NTFS driver (to read the windows partition) only allows read access (not read and write access). It was easily solved with MacFuse (which is an open source way to add different disk file systems to your mac, kind of like teaching it a new language), and NTFS-3G for mac osx.
    http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/
scroll down a bit for the download link. The installer will put in MacFuse and NTFS-3G, so it's the only one you need.
After a reboot, i can read/write to the windows partition while booted into macosx (and it's free).
    i hope that helps.
p.s. the efi boot manager download is NOT required.

  • File sharing between Macs and PCs

I'm not able to properly network a Mac and a PC laptop in my office. The Mac is running 10.4.9, the PC is running XP Service Pack 2. Here's what I'm doing:
I right-click on a Windows folder. On the "Sharing" tab I click on "Share this folder on the network."
I go over to the Mac. I try to browse the network; the PC doesn't show up. I type command-K, type in smb://[my PC name] into the box. A dialog box pops up indicating that it's trying to connect, but nothing happens.
Similarly, if I turn on Windows File Sharing on the Mac and try to go the other way (access the Mac from the PC), that doesn't work either.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks very much.

I am having a similar problem getting onto a Windows network with my Mac.
    I select Finder/Go/Connect to server...
I then enter my server's address, and click on the "connect" button. I get the "connecting to server" dialog box. Then I get the "SMB/CIFS File System Authentication" dialog box. The "Workgroup or Domain" box already is filed in with the proper name, so it appears to me that I have made contact with the server. The "name" box shows up filled in with my .mac name, so I delete it and type in my Windows user name. I then fill in my Windows password, and click on the "OK" button.
Then the "connecting to server" dialog box reads "could not connect to the server because the name or password is incorrect."
I am using the same name and password that I use when I get on the netowrk with my Dell. In fact, I will plug the ethernet cable into my Dell and get onto the network. I then log off, switch the cable to my MacBook Pro, and I cannot get on.
Any thoughts on why the server is sending my MacBook Pro the "wrong name or password" message, but letting my Dell on?
