File.renameTo, explain this...

Hi.
This peace of code:
File f = new File("C:/before.txt");
System.out.println( f.getName() );
f.renameTo( new File("C:/after.txt") );
System.out.println( f.getName() );
output is:
before.txt
before.txt
and my filesystem has properly changed the name
from before.txt to after.txt
If the name change went ok, shouldn't the second print be "after.txt" ?

Probably not as f.getName() refers to File f.
While the File f has been successfully renamed, this does'nt affect the instance of File you are checking. Get it?

  • Concurrent processing & file.renameTo(...)

    Hi,
    I've can successfully move a file in the single thread/process environment using file.renameTo
    However in the multithreaded/multiple process environment, the initial file is several MB (about 100mb). It is created on the fly outside of my thread and takes several minutes to build.
    I would like to rename it after the file is finished building.
    In my code I do the following:
    boolean success = false;
    while (! success)
    success = inputFile.renameTo(dest);
    QuickSleep(1500); // Performs a Thread.sleep in a try/catch
    I've seen some weird behavior however. On a windows box the renameTo seems to return false if the other process is still writing to the file. However on linux the .renameTo is returning true even though the file hasn't finished building.
    The end result on linux is I end up with two files. One that got renamed and is partially filled and the other original with the rest of the file.
    Is there a way to know when the file isn't being written by another process/thread?

    JNDI needs some property such as the
    java.naming.factory.initial
    java.naming.provider.url
    which are needed by the
    InitialContext(env);
    where env is a properties object
    Now if you can not find the physical property file on the class path
    by AtccJndiTemplate.class.getResourceAsStream(this.jndiProperties);
    where the String "jndiProperties" get injected by certain IOC ( inverse of control container ) such as Spring framework
    if not found then it will take the property from the system which will come from the evniromental variables which are set during the application start up i.e through the command line
    java -Djava.naming.factory.initial=com.sun.jndi.ldap.LdapCtxFactory -Danother=value etc..

  • Java.io.File renameTo does not work on Solaris

    Hi Experts,
    I have a code-piece which tries to move files from one directory to another on the SAME FILE SYSTEM using java.io.File.renameTo method.
    It works fine when there less no. of files in the source directory. But the renameTo does not work as expected when there are very huge no. of files(~40K) present in the source directory.
    I am aware that there is a known issue when one tries to use this method to move files across file systems OR if the file exists at the destination directory.
    But in my case the file system is the same and the there is no such file in the destination directory.
    I suspect some inode related issues. But not sure what it is exactly.
    Is there any limitations of renameTo?
    Please help.

If you would like some specific and relevent answers, please supply specifics about how exactly the operation differs from your expected results. You should also post example code as it is almost always asked for eventually.

  • File.renameTo(File) doesn't change dirs on Linux?!

    I'm trying to change a file's name and directory with File.renameTo but it doesn't work. It says in the manual that changing dirs is O/S dependent, so i guess it doesn't work on Linux.
    Is it correct? if so, what can be done to change a file's name and directory?

    Hmm, it worked for me, though I didn't try deleting the oldFile. A simple move from one directory to another was not problem, though. The rename would fail if the delete failed. You might check that.

    I have noticed on many occasions recently that when I ma using either ...
    File, Find, Searching "This Mac"
    or
    "New Finder Window"
    I am NOT finding the files I am looking for ...
    I now they are there, so I go through all my folders, and find the files, or folders I am looking for ...
    So why could this be happening, why are they not found in the search ?
    Is there a fix or addition ?

    As baltwo eventually explained, you have to add the search criteria "System files" to your search, with the option "Include" selected, to find many items Spotlight otherwise excludes from search results. Alternately (& quite ridiculously), if your search is restricted to the parent folder containing the item, you don't need to add this.
    For example, if you open /Library in the Finder, enter "Desktop Pictures" in the search box, you won't get it in the results with the default "This Mac" location, but if you click "Library" for the location, you will. (Yes, many users think this is bizarre, "what were they thinking?" behavior.)
    What Spotlight considers "system files" is only slightly less bizarre, as you will probably discover once you start using it to broaden searches. For instance, Safari history items & Mail.app messages are not found unless you include system files, but many files like C Header Source files (in System/Library/Frameworks) are found without including system files in the search.
    When it was introduced in Tiger, Spotlight was supposed to be a next-generation search engine, capable of accurately guessing what you were looking for (& filtering out what you weren't) with near-sentient intelligence. I think almost anyone who used that version will agree it did not achieve that lofty goal. Apple apparently agreed, or at least listened to the complaints enough to realize it needed rethinking. Unfortunately, what its designers came up with for the Leopard rethink feels like an early beta version, full of hastily implemented, quirky features that never got sorted out before it was released.
    We can only hope that we won't have to wait for OS 10.6 for a more mature, less quirky version.

  • File.renameTo() and locking

    Hi,
    I would like to rename file, but File.renameTo() will not work if the file will be locked by some other process. If other process has locked the file, I would like to wait for it to release the lock. So I have:
    FileLock lock = new RandomAccessFile(file, "rw").getChannel().lock(0L, Long.MAX_VALUE, false);
    file.renameTo(destFile);
    lock.release();But this does not work, because file is locked and renameTo does not work (returns false).
    What can I do to lock the file myself (wait for other locks to be released) and to rename it (rename does not work when file is locked).

    hi, I don't thik you have to lock the file yourself while renaming it because that is (from my point of view) an opperating system's job to do it.
    you could maybe make a
    while(! file.renameTo()){
    thread.sleep(1000);
    to wait till its unlocked.
    I'm not sure that helps but that's just an idea

    I came across the strangest behaviour of File.renameTo() for the following steps:
    1. Rename a file - successful
    2. Rename the same file again - will fail. Also delete will fail.

    As it seems File.renameTo() sets the file to open, since neither renameTo or delete will work after a renameTo.
    BUT, if I uncomment the commented code, it will work again! I just open a dummy RandomAccessFile (FileInputStream would work as well I guess) and then close it, and somehow the file is set to closed again, and the second renameTo() will work.
    Is this a bugg in File.renameTo()? I run on windows XP and have java 1.4.1_02-b06. I couldn't find any comment about this in the Bug Database.

    Aha! so the reason why the opening of the dummy RandomAccessFile did it in my previous code, was becase it created the old File "F1" again that could be renamed again. So the correct code should instead be:

    1. oracle tells us that when the full table scans are performed db file scattered event appears but here clearly db file parallel read was occuring.
    2. as the table was going through the full table scan as oracle 11gr2 default behavior will not cache the blocks that are part of the table going through the full table scan is this the reason why the db file parallel read wait event was occuring.
    3. clearly in the explain plan it used a view called VW_DAG_0 which is inexistant on the database is this a bug or this is the behavior of oracle optimizer to create a view.
    4. before collecting any statistics on the table when the same sql statement to count is executed a lot of db file parallel read waits appeared, can any one please explain this behavior.
    5. while doing the full table scans if the oracle shows the waits as db file parallel read (occurs when the recovery or parallel processes are used), but is this behavior changed.
    finally,
    6. can any one please explain the difference between the db file parallel read and db file scattered read.

  • When running labview's test executive I recieve runtime error: Call to step "PRE-RUN" failed. Could someone explain this error?

    I have a set of vi's that work when run under labview. However, when calling these vi's from labview's test executive I recieve runtime error: Call to step "PRE-RUN" failed. in Assign Connector Pane.vi->Call Test.vi->Execute Pre-Run.vi->Test Executive. Could someone explain this error to me? (or ideally tell me how to fix it?) Thanks.

    There are any number of possible causes to this problem. Which version of Test Executive are you using? Have you upgraded your Test Executive recently? The latest version is 5.1.1. If you have changed anything about Test Executive on your computer recently, I recommend you perform a mass compile of all your VI libraries, as having different versions of the VIs on your system could often result in the "Call to Step XYZ Failed" errors. Also, are you using any DAQ or Analysis VIs in your steps? We have seen problems where the use of DAQ or Analysis VIs in the sequence can cause intermittent "Call to Step...Failed" errors. There are some KnowledgeBase entries on our website that discuss this problem. Are you using the Test Executive in the VI environment, or
    as an executable? Again, there are some problems with using Test Executive as an executable that result in these errors, and there are also KnowledgeBase entries that discuss these problems.
    If you have a pared-down application that demonstrates the problem, feel free to send me your VIs and your .seq file and I will try to reproduce the problem.

  • Nightmare with Log Writer, active files please explain !

    Can anybody explain how many redo log groups server may need in no-archiving mode ?
    The documentation from Oracle web site says:
    If you have enabled archiving, Oracle cannot re-use or overwrite an active online log file until ARCn has archived its contents. If archiving is disabled, when the last online redo log file fills, writing continues by overwriting the first available active file.
    From this it looks only 2 groups are needed. I dont get how is it possible to overwrite active file ??? I think I should be written by dbw and become inactive first. Is that the reason I get "checkpoint has not completed" warnings in the log and pure performance ?

    I believe the minimum required by oracle is 2 groups.
    Obviously, this won't cut it in ARCHIVELOG mode for most databases. But then, you were referring to NOARCHIVELOG mode. I tend to go with 3 in this type of scenario.
    As for the 2nd part. Only one redo log is 'ACTIVE' at a time. When a log switch occurs, it goes to the next INACTIVE redo log and starts writing to that. Thus, overwriting what was previously in it. DBWn doesn't write redo entries, that is handled by LGWR. As far as Oracle8i, the only part DBWn had on redo logs was triggering log writting by LGWR.

  • JFileChooser and File.renameTo()

    Anyone experienced strange behaviour from the JFileChooser returned
    File Object. In my case it's an instance of:
    sun.awt.shell.Win32ShellFolder2
    Unfortunatly the File.renameTo(File file) method doesn't work
    properly with this File instance.
    Anyhelp is welcome / dzone

    overwrite the approveSelection() method of your JFileChooser. in there you can do your checks before executing super.approveSelection().

  • File.renameTo(..) does not work with NFS?

    I have some code the essentially does this:
    1. Create Destination Directories
    file.mkdirs(..);
    2. For each file..'rename to destination'
    for (..)
    file.renameTo(..);
    * Where the rename To is 'moving' the file to the dest directory.
    This code works fine on LocalDrive to LocalDrive.
    But when I goes to the NFS...
    The Directories get created on the NFS.
    But the files never make it there..no exception is thrown...
    Has Anyone encountered such behavior before?
    The system obviosly has write permissions since the directories do get created...

    ok...something that has been bugging me..
    We all know that Java IO is dog slow (perhaps now with 1.4 it is better with non blocking io)..but..here's my gripes..
    for Java API calls where a native equivalent exists on the OS, then native equivalent should be invoked (as it is more then likey going to be faster). In other words shouldnt renameTo call mv on unix.
    now java has no copy method..so..some time ago..I implemented a 'native' copy..simply system.exec("cp ") etc..(much quick the copying the streams)
    This works..but after finding out the system.exec FORKS the entire VM, we can no longer use this, as memory requirements are strict.
    It seams to me that sun has messed up here...
    or am I missing something?

  • Someone Please Explain This to me-Quad G5 running slower that Christmas

    I just got my Quad Powermac G5 fully loaded w/ 8 Gigs; 2 500 Gig Hd's and this thing is running slower than my 15 inch powerbook with 2 gigs. I am running Motion 1 and I am simply taking a picture and applying an effect (nothing crazy just simple blurs and such) and it will not play in real time? it seems to be just as slow at rendering effects as my powerbook? it took 3 mins. to render 15 seconds? Could someone please explain this phenomenom? I am a little baffled and ****** off.

    Mac OS X is heavily cache and swap dependant, its like the OS was designed to run with flash RAM instead of hard drives or something.
    The speed of Mac OS X will improve greatly upon the I/O speed of your boot drive.
    Since you got the stock 250 GB, most likely without a large 16Mb cache, Mac OS X will crawl slower and slower as the boot drive fills up.
    I've noticed with my brand new 20" iMac G5 that I'm getting beachballs, there is nothing hardly on the drive and it's not even hooked ot the internet and it's slow, a pig 250 GB 7,200 RPM drive.
    My main machine in my signature is lighting quick, windows snap open, program launch fast as heck and boot time is under 30 seconds. Actually it's a combination of things, fast video card, plenty of RAM and fast drive I/O speed that make a Mac snappy with the feature and eye candy rich Mac OS X.
    The Quad has four processors, so CPU intensive multi-threaded applications will perform long jobs in short order. As well as running many applications at once.
    What will help make your Quad snappy is to replace your boot drive with a 74 GB 10,000 RPM Western Digital Raptor and keep it slim, keep your files on a second drive, leave your iTunes and User "home" folders alone on the Raptor just near empty.
