File-roller issue
Hello
I can't extract any rar archive with file-roller, when opening an rar archive with file-roller, I click on the extract button, and then when the new dialog that asks me where I wanna extract it appears, the extract button doesn't work, what is the issue?
Unrar is installed, can right click on the rar archive and "extract here".

File-roller issues...or why i prefer CLIs
I tend to stay away from GUIs, and this is just one example of why i prefer the terminal and (in general) the arch way of doing things.
I used to be able to extract files with file-roller by right clicking on them and hitting "extract here". with archives that where multiple files (like R00,R01, etc) i could do this on any file and it worked. But i recently reinstalled my system, and its not worked on any files aside from the first one. It also doesnt work at all with zip files. The command line tools unrar and unzip both work just fine, so i guess file-roller is doing something wrong. I always end up with "CRC Failed".
Now, i dont really care about this specific issue because its just as easy for me to use the terminal to do this, and i probably will figure it out eventually (although any suggestions are welcome). But i am wondering if anyone else has delt with something similar,
It seems like every time i switch over to using gnome i come across some issue like this, where the GUI just ends up complicating matters and i switch back to Awesome or window maker...but the other people who get on my computer from time to time really dont like that. It always leaves me asking the question "whats so hard about memorizing commands"... but i suppose thats for another forum, and another target audience.
Really what i'd like to know is do other Archers come across similar situations, and end up falling back to the "simpler" solutions? And if you have other people who use your computer do they find it frustrating when your logged in with AwesomeWM or some other less then newb-friendly WM. (i know you can just make them a user account, but say they just want to get on FireFox to look something up real quick).extract () {

Oracle Virsion: 9.2.0.8
Patches applied:
Oracle Patch: 5726045 - Successfully patched with zero return code.
Oracle Patch: 641703 - Failed with Error Code 200.
Scenario:
I have to apply CPUJAN2008 patch on 55 different servers located at different places in different states. Previously some other DBA had written a Windows NT Script for applying patch CPUOCT2007 on these
55 differnet servers which have the same instances, same filing system, same oracle version, same directories, same oracle_home, etc. In other words they are replicas to each other. For the purpose of
patching, the script is the best option. The Script for CPUOCT2007 was never went through, hence I am trying to test this CPUOCT2007 script and if tested allright, I will make certain amendmends to make it
ready for CPUJAN2008 patch.
Problem:
I tested the script for CPUOCT2007 patch and encountered the following problem:

Gedit and file-roller unresponsive caused by theme with gtk 3.6.1
When running either gedit or file-roller my whole system becomes very "laggy". The applications themselves become unusable after opening and then crash. When running in the terminal there is no error message just the word "killed" once the app crashes. I do not know what these two apps have in common I have not found any other applications on my computer with this problem. I re-installed arch yesterday and this problem appeared. Help?
Edit:
I'm running gnome 3.6 with gnome-shell on a 64bit install

I am also having this severe memory leak with Gedit. The theme I'm using is called "Delorean" (dark) and has animations (buttons animate from released to pressed, pretty nice). Let me see if finding a theme without animations fixes the problem for me too...
EDIT: Yup. This was the problem with me too. I tried satya164's theme (above) without animations and now Gedit doesn't crash anymore.
@satya164, would you style the carets in your Evolve theme so they are slightly thicker than normal? It's possible to make carets have color and thicker than 1 pixel in the new Gnome. For example, a nice thick caret matching the same vibrant blue color as the scroll bars (when clicked and dragged) would be nice.
I wonder if this issue had to do with my entire desktop crashing periodically in Gnome 3.6.1. It's been happening every session after a while with multiple things open and running. Let's see if removing animations fixed it.
EDIT (couple days later): My Gnome Desktop still crashes, so it's not theme related.
You mean the carets in the Entry widget? I think it's not possible to theme carets.
TIP: If you like dark theme, try by setting "Use dark theme for all applications" in Tweak Tool to use Evolve's dark theme. -
PS CS3, Camera Raw 4.6 Update and Nikon D810 NEF File Reading Issue
Currently Have Photoshop CS3 & Adobe Bridge CS3 2.1.1.9.
According to Adobe, Camera Raw 4.6 supports Nikon D810 NEF files. I have downloaded Camera Raw 4.6 Update. When
I try to open Nikon D810 NEF files, I get Photoshop CS3 error that says
"cannot complete request your because it is not the right kind of
document. These NEF files wont open in Adobe Bridge at all. What am I doing wrong?Hey,
Before I purchased, let me get your thoughts on another option that just occurred to me which involves:
1)Editing my D810 NEF files in LR 5.6, which I have, then exporting/saving the edited files as JPEGs.
2) Doing any additional editing, as necessary (i.e. that might require layering or selections..etc) , with the JPEGs with Bridge or PS CS3.
This method wont involve any additional software purchase now.. right? Am I missing anything. here? Since my final output to my customers are JPEGs any way, wont this work? Will I be at any disadvantage. Am I missing anything. here?

A problem with file-roller!!!
I have a problem with file-roller.
When I open an achieve file with file-roller, I can not directly open the file in the file-roller. "Open with" does not work either.
But if i use sudo for file-roller, "open" and "open with" do work.
How can I use "open" and "open with" without sudo for file-roller?
Can any body help me ?Hi,
The link is working... it's not a nautilus quirk. Try these examples:
FIRST EXAMPLE:
Login as root and edit mimeinfo.cache (In openSUSE, the linux distribution I'm using right now, this file is placed on /usr/share/applications).
su
gedit /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache
Search for audio/mpeg=
The first application I specify is going to be the program that File-Roller will use to open a compressed mp3 file.
Example:
audio/mpeg=totem.desktop;banshee-1.desktop;
This will open Totem...
audio/mpeg=banshee-1.desktop;totem.desktop;
This will open Banshee.
SECOND EXAMPLE:
$ su
$ gedit /usr/share/applications/defaults.list
Search for:
text/xml=MozillaFirefox.desktop
Replace to:
text/xml=gedit.desktop
This will open xml files with Gedit, instead of Firefox.
Good luck.

Cant drag and drop from file-roller to nautilus when using List View
Hi, im using file-roller and i can only use drag and drop feature from file-roller when i use Icon View. If i select List View i cant drag and drop.
Is that an expected behavior or its a bug? Is there a patch or work around? (File Roller 2.20.1 and Gnome 2.20.2)
I think its a problem with file-roller cause in my other box, running ubuntu 7.10 i have the same problem, but i can drag and drop from ark even when using List View.
Thx!Well, sorry for the double post, but after a little research i found this is a bug, actually a not yet implemented feature. There is a patch and probably its going to be merged in next version.
Ill try to apply the patch myself, if it works could the maintainer Jan de Groot put it on the repository?
Here is the bug: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=171655

Whenever I try to download a file and use an application to open it (such as fileroller or Gnome PDF viewer it seems to open fine (though file roller doesn't extract correctly) but I get this error...
Failed to contact configuration server;
some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit,
or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash.
See http://www.gnome.org/projects/gconf/ for information.
(Details - 1: IOR file '/tmp/gconfd-fincher/lock/ior' not opened successfully,
no gconfd located: No such file or directory
2: IOR file '/tmp/gconfd-fincher/lock/ior' not opened successfully,
no gconfd located: No such file or directory)
What can i do to fix this problem?I don't know where I've read about this, but one of the last tar updates must have changed the file format slightly, which confuses some frontends. Perhaps just wait for a file-roller update.

File-roller file association problem
Hi,
I have a problem with file-roller file associations.
When I double-click on a file in file-roller it always asks which application to use.
For instance, If I double-click on a txt file from thunar it opens gvim automatically. But if I try from file-roller, from an archive, it asks which application to open with.
Same thing for pictures. Thunar starts mirage automatically but file-roller asks which application to start.
It seems that file-roller does not read .local/share/applications/defaults.list nor .local/share/applications/mimeapps.list. I tried to modify both but nothing changes.
I am not running gnome but openbox.
I also tried from cli gnome-open foo.txt and, like should be, it starts gvim.
Installing gnome-mime-data didn't solved the problem. Maybe I am missing something?
Still searching on google for a solution. If somebody had similar problem and knows how to solve please let me know.
Thank you very much and as always sorry for my bad English.

Recording File Size issue CS 5.5
I am using CS 5.5, a Balckmagic Ultra Studio Pro through USB 3.0 being fed by a Roland HD Video switcher. Everything is set for 720P 60fps (59.94) and the Black Magic is using the Motion JPEG compression. I am trying to record our sermons live onto a Windows 7 machine with an Nvidia Ge-Force GTX 570, 16 GB of Ram and a 3TB internal raid array (3 drives). It usually works great but more often now when I push the stop button in the capture window, the video is not proceesed and becomes unusable. Is it a file size issue or what. I get nervous when my recording goes longer than 50 Minutes. Help
Jim thank you for the response. I have been away and busy but getting
caught up now.
I do have all drives formatted as NTFS. My problem is so sporadic that I
can not get a pattern down. This last Sunday recorded fine so we will see
how long it last. Thanks again. -

I am having a file moving issue with Adobe Reader XI
I am having a file moving issue with Adobe Reader XI on a Windows 7 32bit system. When Adobe reader is set as the default program for PDF files moving files from one directory to another takes over a minute, regardless of the size of the file. When the default handler is set to another program, like Nuance or PDF Creator, this is instant. What in Adobe Reader is causing this and what can I do to speed up file moving? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I am using Windows 7 home edition and using Internet Explorer 10
The PDF's are online on websites that I am trying to open. Both on the site as well as trying in a new window.
Thank you

Windows Update Helps with File Size Issues?
I'm just wondering if anybody has recently noticed an
improvement related to the file size issue variously reported
throughout the forums?
I ask because our IT folks distributed a Windows update on 2
days last week and since the application of those updates I have
not experienced the freakishly large file sizes and the related
performance issues in Captivate. Unfortunately I don't have any of
the details of what patch(es) were installed, as it was part of our
boot script one morning and I didn't even realize it was updating
until I received the Reboot Now or Later alert.
Anyway, I was curious because I have experienced significant
performance improvement since then.
RoryIf you are using a remote workflow ... designers are sending off-site editors InCopy Assignment packages (ICAPs) .... then they need to create assignments in order to package them for the remote InCopy user. So there's no need to split up a layout into smaller files or anything. An assignment is a subset of the INDD file; multiple assignments -- each encompassing different pages or sections -- are created from the same INDD file.
When the designer creates the assignment, have them turn off "Include original images in packages"; that should keep the file size down.
Or -- like Bob said -- you can avoid the whole remote workflow/assignment package rigamarole all together by just keeping the file in a project folder in the Dropbox folder on teh designer's local hard drive, and have them share the project folder with the editors. In that workflow, editors open the INDD file on their local computer and check out stories, just as though they were opening them from a networked file server.
I cover how the InCopy Dropbox workflow works in a tutorial video (within the Remote Workflows chapter) on Lynda.com here:
