Filereader at OSX platform

Hello
i use a filereader to read from a txt file.
running the programm with OS X all special characters are not shown correct.
i have searched some time to find a solution, but i can't find it.
the filereader uses the default encoding, so i can't set no charset.
maybe the filereader has no UTF-16 support at OSX platform ?
please help
String inputline = "";
FileReader txtfile = new FileReader(file);
in = new BufferedReader(txtfile);
while ((inputLine = in.readLine()) != null)
// do something

FileReader uses the system's default encoding, which most likely is not UTF-16. It's probably ISO-8859-1 or UTF-8 or some Macintosh-specific encoding.
To use a different character encoding you need to go a little longer route and use InputStreamReader with FileInputStream, like suggested in the API documentation of FileReader: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/java/io/FileReader.html InputStream fileStream = new FileInputStream(yourFileHere);
Reader txtfile = new InputStreamReader(fileStream, "UTF-16");
in = new BufferedReader(txtfile);
while ((inputLine = in.readLine()) != null)

  • ADO Driver For Mac OSX?

    Hey All,
    I am working on building an application in RealBasic that will run on both PC and Mac. The app needs to connect to a MS SQL database. On the Windows dev side I would normally just use an ADO connection, but I haven't been able to prove definitively whether or not Mac OSX has an ADO driver (or supports that type of connection out of the box). I know I can use DSN connections, but I hate the idea of having to set those up on each machine the app gets installed on. Is there an open source, freeware, or inexpensive ADO driver for the OSX platform? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

  • Appscan Manual Explorer Firefox 17 ESR Plugin 602 fails to work on OSx

    We recently upgraded our Appscan Enterprise Server to 8.6.0.2 (Fix Pack 2) in order for the IBM product to support Firefox on the desktop. IBM stated the upgrade will allow us to use Firefox 17 ESR, which is the highest supported Firefox version (Currently we use Firefox 19).
    Firefox 17 ESR works fine if you are on a windows desktop with it installed. However, on OSx it does not work. The Appscan Enterprise Console requires the plugin and attempts to install, which it does, however Appscan continues to ask for it to be installed. So the plugin loads in FF 17 ESR, however the Appscan product apparently cannot detect it.
    IBM Support claims that FF 17 ESR is not supported on the OSx platform. Our developers largely use OSx, not Windows. They certainly don't use IE ;).

    The plugin support is interesting - here is a link to the IBM tech page on the Firefox 17 ESR plugin for Appscan:
    http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21623462
    Any reference to platform is specifically about Appscan Enterprise, and not what OS the browser is running on when accessing the Console.
    IBM Support said that it is not supported on OSx. This is fine, if that is the official position which I did not get from the context of our conversation. That is why I took a shot at posting the issue here, hoping that there may be some way to work this out.

  • I have had to "re-instate" "Mail" on my 5yr old Macbook Pro after it got "lost"during an s/w upgrade to Snow Leopard v10.6.8. In reinstated version all my Email archive folders are now missing from the screen. How/where do I find them ??

    I recently purchased Snow Leopard v10.6.3 in order to upgrade the OSX platform on my 5 year old Macbook Pro. That loaded without trouble. Then I needed to do an online upgrade from 10.6.3 to 10.6.8 (via 10.6.4) and there the trouble commenced !! Somewhere along the way, the "Mail" application simply disappeared! On advice from Apple telephone support, I did a "selective" reinstall of "Mail" from the Snow Leopard disk, but the version of Mail it loaded (v4.5) was wrong for use with OSX v10.6.8 and so it kept asking for the 'latest" version (v4.6) and just would not work. I tried a "Fix" download provided on the Apple site, that didn't work.
    I spent 2 hours at the Genius Bar of my local Apple Store and they finally found a fix, after some difficulty. Apparently there had been a programming error somewhere in one of the Apple update downloads.
    So now I have "Mail" back - but the Mailbox folders now not as they were before - particularly they do not contain my archive Folders that I had been using to store certain historic emails.
    I think the folder structure on "Mail" is now identical to that on my "BT Yahoo" screen - whereas before they had been different. My local Apple Store told me that it was practice now to synchronise the "Mail" screen and (for example) the BT Yahoo screen to be identical. This is well and good going forward - but does not help me with access to my historic "email filing system" !!
    Anyone help me find those missing folders ??  They must be stored somewhere, but where ??!!
    Cheers

    Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
    This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

  • Is there a way to change iCal 4.0.4 alarm default settings?

    I'm pretty sure I've asked a version of this same question a before in this forum, but I don't recall what the answer is and I can't seem to find it either by looking in 'Your Stuff' Discussions; so, I'm asking it again. I'm also hoping Apple will fix this in an update to iCal 4.0.4, though somehow, I doubt they will, since they appear to be all about the OSX Lion now and are abandoning us Snow Leopard users as quickly as they have previous OSX platform users. This isn't really fair for those of us that can't move to the new Lion OSX yet for application compatibility reasons.
    So, here's my issue:
    When I schedule an event/appointment in iCal 4.0.4 in Snow Leopard, there are options for setting the alarms that are default options. In the top half of the little drop-down menu when clicking on alarm, they are actions listed as:
    None
    Message
    Message with Sound
    Email
    Open File
    Run Script
    In the bottom half of the little drop-down menu when clicking on alarm, they are tmes listed as:
    Play sound "x" 15 minutes before
    Display message 15 minutes before
    Play sound "x" 1 hour before
    Play sound "x" 15 minutes after
    Why is there an option in the default alarm times for setting an alarm to after an event has happened?
    Who in their right mind would want an option that would make them late to do something or go somewhere?
    It seems to me this is a inane option and should be deleteable in the Preferences, but it isn't!
    I am be able to alter some of the time options just by setting events and changing the times, such as using 30 minutes before over and over again, so iCal seems to learn I want this option regularly and will eventually display it for me. However, no matter what I do, I can't seem to get rid of the Play sound "x" 15 minutes after option. Is there a fix for this or not?

    This discussion is going on in another thread where there has been more responses, one fix and a work-around noted. Please go here to read them: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18157324?ac_cid=142432#18157324

  • No total recall after change from Windows Logic Platinum 5.5.1 to Intel Mac

    Hi Logic-users,
    up to now I was using Logic 5.5.1 on a Windows-PC. Some days ago I changed over to Intel Mac and Logic 7.2.3. When opening a 5.5.1-Song it is converted from ASIO to Core Audio. But then I got a problem with spectrasonics Stylus RMX which I use as a drum-plugin. It was a VST-plugin in Logic 5.5.1 and is now the new Intel-nac-Version (audio-unit-plugin) in Logic 7.2.3. The MIDI-data is in the Logic-tracks but the problem is: the program doesn't use the new Stylus version automatically - there is only the outcrossed name "Stylus" in the Logic-channel. I have to activate it by hand - and then all the drum-channels within Stylus are empty. That means: I have to re-edit all the Stylus-drumsounds and -settings by hand.
    What can I do to get real total recall? Or is simply not possible because I had too much change altogether (new OSX-platform / new Logic-version / new plugin-version)?
    Best regards,
    Thomas

    Mac Pro 2x 2,66 GHz 2 GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Thomas,
    I'm pretty sure you're out of luck on this one, I'm afraid. The differences are to much to be able to translate from one to the other.
    We all went through it when we switched from Mac OS9 to OSX. Then we all had to go through it again when Logic went to Audio Units.
    If it was a matter of VST in OSX, you could probably open it up in Logic with Fxpansions VST to AU wrapper, but I don't think you'll bee able to get it from the PC VST version to the Mac OSX VST version.
    You'll have to try and recreate the RMX settings by hand. Tedious, I know, especially if you had done a lot of editing.
    Another option would be to open the song on your PC, and bounce the various RMX parts to audio files, and re-import those into Logic 7. I know that's not the same, but if you were done with the programming aspect of that song, it could at least get you the sounds back.
    If anyone has information to the contrary, I'd love to hear about it. But this is how I understand it to be...
    Sorry.

  • I need to access old MacDraw files

    I kept my old Pismo PowerBook in order to be able to run OS 9.2 and old applications that were not brought on to the OSX platform.
    When I went to open some old MacDraw files I discovered that somehow the translator for MacDraw no longer was available to ClarisDraw or ClarisImpact.
    Does anyone out there have a copy of the translators, or can tell me where/how to get hold of it. I do not recall if ClarisDraw was distributed with OS 9.2. If so, I somewhere have the CD's and could reinstall or repair the programs. Can anyone tell me how CLarisDraw and Imppact was distributed?

    The Claris (boxed) programs (MacWrite, MacDraw, MacPaint, etc.) shipped with floppy disk installers and a spiral-bound user manual.  In the early to mid-90s, they were combined into the single program "ClarisWorks," which was included as bundled software (on the OS restore disk) with the Performas running OS 7.5, sold for home or educational use.  The program included built-in translators, to read files created by the older versions of its component programs.  With version 5, ClarisWorks was re-named "AppleWorks."  You can download/install the final version of AppleWorks 6.2.9 (available here), but I seem to recall (from another Forum topic about a year ago) that some of the older translators were no longer included with the newest/final release of the program.  Because the Claris Corporation sold boxed, retail versions of the program, you should check eBay for ClarisWorks 4 on CD (ClarisWorks 3 may run on OS 9.2 - I haven't tried it).  I'm suggesting version 4, because it may have translators that weren't included with version 5 - but I don't know that for sure.  Apple's support page for AppleWorks can be found here.

  • Lost messages in iMessage

    Recieved an message . was notified and then the message was not i iMessage on the Mac. The message is visible on iPhone.
    Anybody with the same problem?
    Likewise  added phone data to one of my contacts - where I had 2 streams of messages. AppleId and Phone number - Result lost the phone number stream on the Mac.
    Seems that iMessage is NOT stable on the Max OSX platform
    //Jan

    the phone stream is only on the IOS device. The appleid stream on both.
    ...which is what you had said in your initial post. Error 40 is still an option... while posting here as well as while setting up your devices...
    The contact used is based on an iCloud contact. The removal of the stream on OSX was lost when the phone no was added to the iCloud contact.
    So, why don't you do as advised? Usually, shortly after you (re-)launch Messages on the Mac after the phone number was activated in iOS, it pops up in Messages on the Mac and can be selected in its Preferences. Hmmm?

  • Offline file availability

    I just bought a macbook pro which i will be using in a windows environment at work. We are running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 which is not supported by Snow Leopard. I currently keep all my files on the server in a personal account which only I have access to. On my old laptop (PC), I used to tick certain folders for availability offline. This meant that without an internet connection I could still access these files, edit them, and when I next went to the office these would automatically update the server files with these changes. I have not yet been able to find out how I can do this on my macbook. I am planning on running bootcamp with windows 7 whilst in the office, however, some of my personal stuff will primarilly be accessed from the mac osx platform while I am at home. I may however also want to access these files at work while working in windows, make changes and have these changes be saved to the same location as the fils I will access and edit in mac osx. The reason I keep everything backed up on the work server is for security (online back up), and because I own the company, and keep the files in a folder only accessible by myself so there is no issue with privacy. I recognise that the administrator could access these files but there is nothing there I would be concerned about.
    I want to avoid having a personal folder on my mac hard drive and a copy on my windows hard drive with both just synching with the server when connected to it. I am concerned with two copies this will just eats space. Any ideas?

    Hi,
    There isn't an Offline Files service in 2008 R2. You may need to install Microsoft Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 Driver for Windows Vista (64-bit).

  • Basic Questions from Prospective Lion Server Switcher

    I have five servers I am running right now using Windows 2003 Server and various 3rd party packages.     Several years ago I became a Mac fan, moved all of my client based stuff to Mac, and now want to start moving my server based equipment to the OSX platform.
    I stopped by my local Apple Store, and they had a version of OSX Lion Server running on a MacMini, but couldn't seem to answer the most basic of questions because as their business people stated "We are not Server Certified" ... they recommended I talk to an outside consultant to get these basic questions answered which seems a little extreme.
    So I'm hoping the group can help.
    (1) I read through most of the Lion Server Advanced Administrative manual.    Lion server appears from the manual to do most of what I need.   However, when I tried doing some of the functions in the manual on the demo Lion Server at the Apple Store, many of the functions I wanted to do did not seemed to either be installed, or their were buttons missing in the Server App.     I do not know if this was a permission level problem, because the account I setup for myself had administrative rights.
    (2) In the mail app, it only appeared you could setup one mail domain.    It appeared you could setup virtual domains and users through the user app, but not through the mail domain itself?
    (3) I could not find any where to enable DNS services.    The manual seems pretty straight forward in turning on DNS, but the Lion Server I saw had no DNS services running, or any way to enable them?
    (4) Same for mailman listserv type function ... manual seems to be straight forward on enabling under the mail server, but again, no signs of the settings or enabling under the mail service.
    (5) Under the mail app, didn't find any way to setup alternative SMTP ports  ( I allow now Port 26 besides the standard Port 25 and SSL ports for my users.) ... I find port 26 gets past most firewalls at hotels etc.      Didn't see any way to control SMTP authentification too.
    (6) Under the Lion Server tech description, it talk about a built in web editor, saw nothing of the kind.
    So did the apple store have a limited install or am I missing something that the lion server manual does not match the capabilities of lion server.
    Love to get a straight answer before purchasing hardware to replace 5 present machines.
    Thank you.
    David

    Thanks for quick response.   Indeed, in hindsight, it appears that they had only installed the Server App, but not the Server Admin tools.
    Unfortunately, I am not a system admin, but I played one on TV <grin>
    All kidding aside ... I'm willing to learn, but would need most of the basics controlled through the GUI ... and then feel comfortable reading up and editting configuration files and running commands from the Terminal.
    On this line, is there good documentation of this, or is this something that you know because you are familiar with Unix?    ie something like the alternate port issue ... is this something in the GUI, or something I would have to edit via Terminal?
    Just trying to make an informed decision before jumping platforms.
    Thanks
    David

  • Visual Studio 2008 on a Macbook Air with Parallels/VMWare

    Hi,
    I am looking to purchase an apple laptop to replace my ageing Windows behemoth. I am a developer who writes software on both the Windows and OSX platforms. At the moment, I have to write the Mac apps on my iMac, and the Windows apps on the laptop.
    Now the time has come to upgrade, I want to have the best of both worlds, and have both XCode and Microsoft Visual Studio available on the same machine - hence looking at virtualisation on the mac platform.
    Has anyone tried running Visual Studio 2008 on the Macbook Air over either Parallels or VMWare? How does it hold up?

    With a 15 inch MacBook Pro:
    I have VS Pro 2008 running in a Windows XP VM under VMWare and, at the same time, Windows Server 2003 with IIS and SQL (for development - not production!!!) running as a separate VM. I've also watched movies and used iTunes while doing this - unplugged. Sometimes the fan kicks in, but otherwise it's pretty good. With Unity running, all the unnecessary Windows nastiness is hidden away.
    I don't know that I'd do this with an Air (personally, I can't wait to get one of the new 17s - I never considered the Air as the screen is way too small for coding, viewing sites, running SQL, checking the event viewer, etc.)
    Oh, and get lotsa hard disk space!

  • Intents wrong when exporting from or importing to Pages for iPad

    Anytime I create a document on the iPad and export it for e-mail the indents are messed up when I open them with Pages on the Mac. The same thing happens in reverse direction too. Does anyone have a solution for this or is this a known issue?

    It was the major reason I went with an iPad over a Windows based laptop. Portability and word processing. Unfortunately the "cross platform" issue with exported PDF's render the iPad useless as a business tool in that way.
    It's a shame really but I don't need a $800 toy, I need business tool.
    If this singular issue got any attention and were fixed it would greatly increase the viability of the iPad as that tool but at this stage, it clearly is just a larger iPod touch.
    How professional is it to have no cross platform functionality in a word processor. I'v actually found the program itself quite handy and very powerfull for a mobile WP app.
    Or I could just pre-qulify all the businesses I do business with and ask if they use an OSX platform or Win based but that would really kill my business.

  • Publish to Print Step-by-Step not capturing images

    Does anyone have any suggestions for publishing to a step-by-step guide in Captivate 5 that is usable and looks as good as those from Captivate 4?
    When I publish in Captivate 4, icon images are created wherever a highlight box appears in my Captivate source file.  The icons are of the image underneath the highlight box.  These make all the difference in generating a usable step-by-step guide.
    HOWEVER, when I publish in Captivate 5, all I get is an icon image of the highlight box itself (without even any transparency applied).
    By the way, this happens for Captivate 5 on both Windows XP and Mac OSX platforms.
    Here are some screen shots, so that you can better understand what I am trying to describe.
    From Captivate 5 (BAD)
    From Captivate 4 (GOOD)

    No !
    I did recieve a message from an Adobe developer to try a work-around for Captivate 5 on the Mac, but that didn't work for either my Mac or Windows XP (Word 2007).  You may want to try it, and report back if you have any success.
    The workaround is to set the stroke to 0 and background color to 0% transparency for each highlight box and then export as a step-by-step.
    Adobe said they were able to reproduce the problem and would address it in an upcoming patch, but that was months ago.
    This and other document exports have been a problem on the Mac since C5 went live.  It has been very detremental to my workflow and productivity as a whole.  I have to export on Windows, then capture and paste each icon manually into the step-by-step.  On the Mac there is no hope. Very frustrating to say the least!
    I've used  lots of Adobe's pro products for well over 10 years and have always been an advocate, but not so much anymore, at least where Captivate 5  is concerned. Sorry to dis Adobe, but the turn-around to fix this major disfunction has been absurd.

    You need ACR 7.1 or LR 4.1 to open 5D M3 raws...either that or download the free DNG Converter 7.1 and convert to DNG so LR 3.x will read them.

  • Resume/restore a running process

    i issue a command within an applescript and at a later time, need to access this new running process to check on its status. is this possible?
    the command i am issuing is the HandBrakeCLI app which reencodes video's and can take many hours. the command in the applescript is of the syntax:
    +set hbcli_cmd to "/Applications/HandbrakeCLI -i /path/to/file -o /path/to/out/file -other -parameters"+
    +do shell script hbcli_cmd+
    listing running processes with "ps -efwww", i can see the process. i need to "reopen" this process to see how its getting on. additionally, i would also need to place it back to the background as well!
    many thanks,
    jingo_man

    thats exactly it. if i run the HandbrakeCLI command directly in a terminal session, it has an "interface" with progress, etc. i would like to be able to see this data if possible.
    i used to have a linux machine, which i used the "screen" utility to run/wrap other commands inside. i could then restore that session or command. it was useful for overnight torrent work... would this be applicable on the osx platform?
    or can i access it directly like you suggested?
