Files are in READ ONLY mode

I have a file server 2003 with shared folders. I have " FULL CONTROL" on all the folders. However, when someone else saves a document in one of the folders, it opens in READ ONLY mode on my Windows 7 machine, Office 2013. When I log into the server
itself, I can make any changes to the file. Not from my windows 7.
any ideas?
thanks

Hi,
This issue may occur if the following conditions is true:
The network folder is open in Microsoft Windows Explorer and you are using Details view to display additional details (such as the author or title) for files in the folder. Windows Explorer reads the contents of the files in the folder to obtain the additional
details. If a program tries to open a file exclusively and Windows Explorer has the network file open to extract this additional file information, a sharing violation occurs.
You could turn off the details pane in Windows 7 to resolve the issue. Details Pane can be turned off on the open folder with the Organize dropdown:  Organize->Layout->Details Pane.
For more detailed information, please refer to the thread below:
Office document always opens in read-only when opening from a network folder (Windows 7 + Office 2010 with Swedish language pack)

  • Project files open in read-only mode

project files open in read-only mode in ms project 2013.But in the case of MS Project 2007 it opens in READ\WRITE mode .what should i do so that project will opens in READ\WRITE mode by default in MS Project 2013

In addition to John's excellent reply, I'd add that if you are talking about Project Server, this is by design that the projects in 2013 version open in read-only mode, in order to require an explicit operation to check-out the file. This prevents to have
many checked out files by mistake.

  • New user- all my files are now read only -

I am using a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop with Windows XP  and my husband has a Dell Dimesion 4600 desktop.  Two weeks ago I installed a Linksys Compact Wireless-G USB adapter on his computer and then installed a WRT54G v.6 wireless router.  All is working fine for internet connection. Today I discovered all my files are now read only and even when I uncheck the read only box and click apply, then close the file, on re-opening it it is again read only.  Even the files on my external hard drive are now read only.
I am backtracking to see where a change was made that was unintended and the wireless router was the last thing I installed.  Is there a connection?  And if so, can someone help me make the necessary changes or tell me where to find out?
I read through a lot of messages but did not immediately see this situation addressed.
    Sandra

seems to be an OS issue , because there is nothing on the router setting that could change the configuration on the computer....try System Restore....can't think of anything else at this point...

  • SP2013 and Project 2013 - project files open in read-only mode with no options to edit only Save As

    Hi all,
    Environment:
    SharePoint 2013 (15.0.4420.1017)  RTM
    Windows 8 - Project 2013 (15.0.4433.1506) 32Bit
    Issue details:
When opening .mpp files stored within SharePoint they are opened successfully within Project 2013 however they are opened in Read-Only mode with no options to edit/check out only Save As.  The
same outcome is experienced if you click the document link within SharePoint or you chose to edit from the document menu.
Opening the file through windows explorer also opens only in read-only mode.
To date we’ve tested the following
    Windows 7 – Office 2010 = working as expected
    Windows 8 – Office 2010 = working as expected
Windows 7 – Office 2013 = opening as read only, no prompt to edit
Windows 8 – Office 2013 – opening as read only, no prompt to edit
Current thinking is that it is an issue with either the SharePoint Office Documents Class ActiveX control or Project 2013 itself interacting with SharePoint 2013.
We have tested this in multiple SP2013 environments with the same outcomes.
The workaround therefore is to save locally and then upload again which is not ideal.
Unable to find an exact issue match to this.
    Any help with this appreciated.

    Hi Dan,
For us after investigating this further it was found that using the document menu to edit or checkout and then edit results in the project file being opened in read-only mode.
The same issue was present for Visio files.
Using the FILES ribbon menu results in the document being opened in edit mode successfully in both Project and Visio.
Please note that we found that this issue only exists within document libraries where checkout is required to edit which was our case.  If checkout is not required the document
menu can also be used as expected.
    Cheers,
    Dan

  • In RH7html, files are suddenly read only

We use RH7 html and VSS version control. I have opened an old project and had some issues trying to get it versioning correctly.
when I opened the project just now, all my htm files (topics) are 'read only', so every time I want to change something a message pops up and I have to click OK to make it writable. Not huge, but is there a way I can change all the topics to writable at one time?
    city sue

It is interesting you should ask the last question below. I checked it, and it has gone back to only 'add to version control' being available where it had all the options available a while ago today.
I haven’t had this problem with my other projects. This is a very old one and is basically really badly set up, so who knows what is going on.
I have added it to version control YET AGAIN. I have a nasty feeling this problem with this project is not going to go away any time soon.

  • "xlsx" files opens in read only mode

    Hi,
I'm not able to edit .xlsx file when I try to do so from the followedcontent.aspx page. Whereas, I can follow the .xls document.
Has anyone encountered this problem before. Is this the expected SharePoint 2013 behavior with .xlsx documents.
To reproduce the issue, you can follow two excel files one with .xls and another with .xlsx extension. Go to the followedcontent.aspx page (where you see all the content you are following). Try to open and edit .xlsx file.
    Thank you.

I think, I just stumbled upon the solution:
Go to the followedcontent.aspx page, then go to site settings, and then activate "Open Document in Client Applications by Default" feature.

I know it's a very old issue and I reached to this page looking for a solution. Finally, I have found a fix to this problem.
The problem is that we create an instance of Word and do not close it correctly. This makes program believe that the file is already open and hence you're getting the respective message of file being locked by you.
Set the visibility of your application to true and then when you close it both file and instance should close and you will not get the problem again.

  • Open pdf files in read-only mode

    Hi all,
I want to open a file and I want to have option rewrite the file while it's open in the Reader.
Is there any way how to open the file in the read-only mode and even from cmd in Windows?
    Thanks in advance.

You can set security in the file to dissallow changesby going to File>Properties>Security in Acrobat. But you can't change anything with Reader.

  • TG4MSQL ora-28500 error on RECOVER login in READ-ONLY mode

We're connecting from a 10.2 dbase to SqlServer2000 via TG4MSQL. No upfront problem connecting but the Oracle .trc file shows below error:
ORA-28500: connection from ORACLE to a non-Oracle system returned this message: [Transparent gateway for MSSQL][Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Login failed for user 'RECOVER'. (SQL State: 00000; SQL Code: 18456)
Below is the content of .ora file:
    HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO=INETSQL3.ComPro
    HS_FDS_TRACE_LEVEL=OFF
    HS_FDS_TRANSACTION_MODEL=READ_ONLY
We are using READ-ONLY mode so the RECOVER login was not defined on SqlServer.
Anyone know why TG4MSQL is trying to open a connection as RECOVER? And is there a way to stop it?

Pending transactions turned out to be the culprit. Below is info from our TAR that
provides some detail on what RECOVER is doing.
Oracle handles all transactions as if they were distributed transactions. He takes a very conservative approach on the assumption that you may want to update
or insert later. This has been like this since Oracle version 6 and will never
change. Hence all transactions get handled as a distributed transactions even though there are no simultaneous updates. A common remote transaction would involve reading from SQL Server and then taking that data an inserting into an Oracle database. In the event a transaction gets aborted for some reason RECO must rollback the transaction. SQL Server requires a valid username/password and hence uses the recovery username/password specified in the gateway init file. The default parameters for both are RECOVER , if they are omitted in the init.ora file for the gateway. Obviously these do not exist on SQL Server. Note that this recovery process is detected and processed by the Oracle kernel. READONLY mode only prevents inserts, updates or deletes to be issued to SQL Server and nothing else. The gateway has nothing to do with handling and monitoring transactions to SQLServer. In all likelyhood you have several in doubt transactions in the dba_2pc_pending view. As long as those entries remain RECO will continue to try and rollback these in doubt transactions and fail each time due to an invalid username/password. This will go on until you either manually remove them or give RECO a valid SQL Server username/password to use.
    OPTION 1
    ==========
Code the follwing in your gateway init.ora file
HS_FDS_RECOVERY_ACCOUNT=use the username specified in your db_link
HS_FDS_RECOVERY_PWD=use the password specified in your db_link
    OPTION 2
    ==========
Define a username with password RECOVER on the SQL Server database you are connecting to

    Any help?

    Hi,
I'm using SleepycatJE 3.3.87 to read from multiple BDBs that are in read-only mode. Recently I've started get ChecksumExceptions after my application runs for awhile. I tried upgrading to 5.0.58 and rebuilt my BDBs, but no luck. The error I am seeing is: I have a few questions.
Is the exception in a read-only env? And is there a process writing at the same time?
When you say you've upgraded and rebuilt your databases, do you mean that you started again from an empty environment directory? How long did it take for the error to occur again after you rebuilt the databases?
Please run the DbVerifyLog utility on the environment and post the complete stack trace along with a listing (ls -l) of the environment directory.

  • "Device Manager is running in read-only mode because you are running it on a remote computer" when local

Hello - since configuring a Windows Web Server 2008 R2 x64 to be hardened for an internet-facing deployment I receive this:
"Device Manager is running in read-only mode because you are running it on a remote computer."
    when entering Device Manager.
I have tried reversing the changes I have made, such as:
    - Re-adding Client for Microsoft Networks
    - Re-enabling NetBIOS over TCP-IP
    - Re-adding File and Printer Sharing
    - Disabling the Windows Firewall in all profiles (public, domain, private)
I get no joy. It looks like a Microsoft ballsup. I'll try and use Process Monitor to have a look. Google returns only 1 page for this error.
    Luke

    Got it.
After my changes to DHCP and static IPs the machine picked up the IP address of another server on my little home LAN. The hostname in IPCONFIG was different to the actual server computer name and so this led Device Manager to think the connection and the
    local machine were different.
What an odd and infuriating problem. My thoughts on this are that Microsoft should be more verbose with error messages and their causes. For example, displaying the values of the assertion would help diagnose a problem; "The host-name www02.farm.brand.com
that you are connecting from does not match the local host-name rest01.dev.farm.brand.com. Connections from remote computers can only use Device Manager in read-only mode; some options will be disabled."
When troubleshooting, the main thing on an engineer's mind is "what has led Windows to its [unexpected] conclusion?"
