Files keep renaming themselves!!

Hi not sure if this is the right place to post, but here goes...
I have a studio of Power Mac G5 towers (20), some are intel dual processors, other are pre intel. The Intel macs are running tiger, the pre intels are running panther.
Problems are occuring when saving files from Adobe CS2 (illustrator, p'shop) and Quark. Occasionally when saving from these programs, the file will change its name to something random and also change its icon.
For example: Saving an illustrator CS2 file called - illustration_3.eps, will appear as dp-600.eps and have a pdf icon.
By pressing get info - it say the file type is an illustrator CS2 file and will open in illustrator.
As Im sure you will appreciate with the fast pace of the studio, some files are being automatically renamed and then lost, causing all sorts of problems.
Any help on this matter would be great.

I have exactly the same problem on a G4 1.25MHz, usually with IndesignCS.
A correct file name is replaced with a file name from any file on the desktop. So for example '16pagebrochiure.indd' could become '2006spreadsheet.xls'. Still opens ok in Indesign however.
Note, only picks up wrong names from files on the desktop.
I'm inclined to think that the problem is related to 10.4, as I don't recell the problem happening with 10.3.9

Just installed Snow Lepeard with CS4 and whenever im saving over or saving as, i keep getting the message that the file is locked and i need to unlock it to save over it"? This is sending me nuts, does anyone know how to stop it?
All files are on a server that hasn't changed. This probelm is also happening in Photoshop. It opens file ok, will save over sometimes, then i need to go unlock the file to save again.

Interesting...What type of server are you using? We are very close to upgrading to Snow Leopard also...

Imported Canon xf305 MXF files keep copying themselves in Premiere Pro CC (October 2014)

Hi. My Adobe Premiere CC keeps getting worse with MXF files. This is a progressing BUG Type problem with each update. As each Premiere update comes out my program behaves even more bizarre. Upon original import, they're fine. Turn off computer and next day my half hour piece all-of-a-sudden turns into 25 copies of the first 5 minutes. So I delete the rest of the copies and whats left I loose 4/5th of the program. So I input files and they're ok,,, 2 hours later they're no audio on 1/2 of the program, or all of the individual Icons in the files bin have turned into one same picture of the first piece copies 10 or 20 times? Or I edit my footage and the next day I turn on the computer open the program and all my footage is not in the bins or timeline, yet they play perfectly fine on their own in the media drive with another player?
WHAT IS GOING ON WITH PREMIERE? It's Absolutely Unusable?
Old drives? I don't think so, It's a relatively new computer with two (5 month old Solid State Drives) Besides it all works great with another player?

4. Then I Open PremiereProCC, create a new project and point everything to that project folder on the M (media) drive.
5. Next I go to media bin within the new project, right-click and choose "Import Media", grab all the new footage and hit open.
6. The roughly 1 hour project taped at 750p @ 50mps, takes about 1.5 hours to populate into the bin.
7. Finally I drag all the clips (roughly 10 of them) onto the new timeline, where it takes another roughly 30 minutes to populate onto the timeline.

Item 5 ...Media Browser I assume?
Item 6 ...thats far too long and indicates an issue. Should be maybe a minute and then maybe some pek conforming
Item 7 ...far too long and indicates a problem, Should be virtually immediate.

Files renaming themselves

I have had on ongoing problem with files renaming themselves most often with a numeric file name. It has happened with Quark , Illustrator and Photoshop files. There is no pattern... it happens randomly at different times. File names are less than 31 characters. Sometimes when I have linked files in Quark from Photoshop, the linked names willl change but not neccessarily the file name itself on the hard drive. Sometimes both names change, sometimes only the linked name will change in the usage box in Quark, sometimes the file will rename itself on the hard drive. For instance, a file recently named SPI6007_past_presentadult.qxd has renamed itself on my hard drive as QXP-1055969291.qxp In this case, it has created another file and did not replace the original. This has been an ongoing issue and I have worked at several agencies with several different computers and several different Mac Operating Systems. Any help is much appreciated. Out IT guys are stumped.

I have had this problem over our network. I transfered a folder with a Quark file and about 50 pieces of art. Most of the art had changed to numbers. I would have been sunk if it were not for the folder still on the server. Still had a lot of changing to do. Other computers on network have not been affected--yet. I have had problems with Quark, Photoshop and Illustrator files changing from app files to Unix files. I have searched the discussion pages and have not found a beneficial solution. One thing I have done is to install Quark, Photoshop and Illustrator on our server. This forces the system to recognize the icons and . I am telling our artists to let the program add the extension and for them not to delete it. This will solve the problem from this point on. We still have lots of art that do not have extensions and will cause problems. One site that was somewhat helpful that I would recommend is www.thexlab.com. You will find some information there about resetting launch services. Good luck.

As web-weaver alluded to previously, the -2-2-2 is the mark of Lightroom renaming a file to resolve a filename conflict. - in a nutsell: if it needs to write a file, but the name is already taken (a file of that name already exists in the folder) it appends -2 (yes, it may be -3 or -4 too depending - but I shan't explain all here).
For the record, I never want Lightroom to append a -1, -2, -3 ... to *any* of my files, be they catalog, photo, or export... This feature is for people who use computers without understanding about files, or folders, or disks... - which is cool, but in my case, any time Lr is doing that it's the wrong thing to do.
i.e. if there is a filename conflict - I want to be involved in resolving it.
Worth noting: there are 2 things that can happen in Lightroom:
1. Proper automatic resolution of legitimate filenaming conflicts (by appending -digit uniqueness suffix).
2. Improper automatic resolution of un-real filenaming conflicts due to Lightroom bugs/confusion. e.g. renaming a file will sometimes add the suffix even though there is no filename conflict.
Bottom line: If images are unlinking themselves and renaming themselves (and you didn't do it, inadvertently outside Lightroom, or in...), then there is a bug in Lightroom. If that is the case, then such bug may very well have been set off by some anomaly in your computer/file-system/catalog... - worth considering that.
If this is a bug in Lightroom, consider reporting it via the link below, along with as much info as you can about how it happened, how to reproduce...

TM errors on one MBP, not on a second, different files keep choking it

I've had Time Machine running fine using a LaCie external drive on 2 different MacBook Pro's. I still have both, and what I did recently was resuscitate the old one, stick a new user account on it for my wife, and now she's using it. One thing I found was a potential problem was that the computer (network) name had been the same on both machines; I fixed that. I also ran Disk Utility and repaired a bunch of stuff and fixed file permissions on her first-gen MBP.
But Time Machine won't complete a backup using her MBP, even though it works just fine on my May-vintage Penryn MBP. Hers used to back up just fine, but that was about 6 months or so ago with a different user account.
I've checked the syslog, and here's a sample of what it reads:

This type of entry repeats, only I've noticed that the files referenced in the Error: (-36) lines +always seem to be different+ after each backup. For example, here's the last file referenced in the snippet I quoted:

It often looks like what TM is doing is actually going file-by-file through a bunch of /System/Library and then /Applications folders. Other threads here and elsewhere suggest moving these offending files to the trash and starting TM again, but that seems like a no-go if the files keep changing. Perhaps if I just let TM keep doing this ad nauseum (and it's nauseating) things might work themselves out. But I've already let it spin during an entire night, and things still weren't fixed in the end.
Am I missing anything? Are the "Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD" errors perhaps significant? Are the "to (null)" parts significant?

If you transferred that files using ftp make sure that you used BINARY mode, not ascii.

Music files getting renamed (why?), iTunes loses them

This has happened once every month or two since I started using iTunes on my laptop. I haven't been able to figure out what triggers it, but every now and then my music files get renamed. Not all of them, but, for example, this time every song on 24 albums out of about 100. It's always entire albums. When it has happened, I double-click on the song, I get the message saying the "original file could not be found", then I re-find it and it starts playing. When it starts playing, iTunes will usually rename it and/or move it to another folder. Sometimes the album ends up in the "unknown artists" folder, or in the "compilations" folder, but once I track it down (through iTunes "do you want to find it") it gets moved back where it belongs.
It was only this last time that I noticed that these lost files were not only getting moved, but they were getting renamed as well. When everything's working fine, my music has been moved and named like has been renamed by iTunes and looks like "C:\My Music\The Dresden Dolls\The Dresden Dolls\03 Missed Me.mp3". Some process in iTunes or in Windows is renaming only certain albums to look like "C:\My Music\Stephen Lynch\A Little Bit Special\10-Gerbil-Stephen Lynch-A Little Bit Special.mp3".
When the files get renamed like this, iTunes can't find them anymore until I go in and fix things, file by file. This takes forever. If not for the fact that I need to preserve my playlists and my play count numbers, I would just blast the whole library and reimport the folder, but I can't do that.
So, any one have any ideas why this happens, how to keep it from happening, and a way to fix things while preserving my metadata without having to double-click on a few hundred songs?

Actually, I found a good solution based on another question. If I re-import the folder, it finds all of those misnamed files and adds them to the library. Then I tell iTunes to keep my music folder organized, and it fixes all the file names and folders. Then after I make sure the original entries work again, I can sort the list by date added, and delete the new entries.
But I still have no idea why those albums are getting renamed. It's not just the most recent ones or the oldest ones, it's not ones that haven't been played, it's just random-seeming.

Tracks keep muting themselves.

512Mb DDR2 SDRAM
Real instrument tracks keep turnimg themselves to mute.
Sometimes I'll get a minute out of them, but the time reduces dramatically to as little as a second.
I unmute the track & it plays for a moment, then mutes itself again.
It happens in both record & play.
Also, I hear no audio at all when playing old garageband 1 projects.
Can anyone help?

Numbers file keeps reverting to old version

I use Numbers (Version 3.5.2) on my MacBook Pro running (Yosemite 10.10.2) and also on my iPad air (running iOS 8.1.3) and iPhone 6 (running iOS 8.1.3). I have a file that I use to keep track of grades that is used across all three devices. In the last month the file keeps reverting back to an old version of the file. After this happens I can go into Numbers on Mac and Select "Revert to..." and select the correct version of the file. I did this yesterday and deliberately reverted to the correct version on the Mac and saved, then opened the iPad, made sure it had the correct version, made a minor change and closed the file. I then opened on the iPhone made sure it was the correct version, made a minor change and saved. I then reopened on the Mac it was the correct version and included the minor changes made on the iPad and iPhone. I saved and then closed the file. Today when I open the file on my Mac, it is back to a version that is over a month old. I again used the "Revert to.." command and was able to get back to the correct version of the file from yesterday. I can't figure out why it keeps reverting to an old version. At first I thought it was pulling in an old version from the iPad or iPhone, but after the experiment yesterday that does not seem likely. Has anyone else had this problem? It is making me seriously question the use of Numbers with documents in the cloud as I can not be certain that the data in the file is correct.

As I said - look whether your original file is damaged or not. If not, I wouldn't change it and find out what in your system makes it sound like it's clipping.
Good sound file, with volume maxed out. No need to change anything.
The same song clipped - no chance to repair.

IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO CHOOSE ANY OTHER FUNCTION WHILE THIS IS HAPPENING, IE : WHEN OPENING A FILE. AS IN , I CANNOT OPEN GOOGLE OR MAIL, ETC. AND THE FILES KEEP OPENING AS UNTITLED. SO I AM NOT ABLE TO OPEN ANY ONE FILE, AND SEE ITS CONTENT, THEY JUST KEEP STACKING LIKE EMTY PAGES ONE ON TOP OF THE NEXT.

Ok - we're going to need a few more details.
Operating System - Windows or Mac?
Version of CS6 - are you fully patched to the latest version (Help>Updates)?
Do you use any 3rd Party Plugins (Help>Manage Extensions and look for 3rd Party Plugins)
At what point does it crash? How are you exorting/printing?
What file type or action are you doing when it's crashing?
