FileVault -- computer speed crawls

I used FileVault today to encrypt files - reduced computer speed drastically. What is the solution?

Unless you really need encryption (and FileVault is not the best), I suggest leaving it off, if it is not too late.
TimeMachine backups are not regular (only after you log out and wait for the backup to finish) and you cannot extract individual files from a FileVaulted TM since your entire User folder is treated as a single file. Also, because your User directory is a single file, any minor change in almost any file will result in a new, complete backup of your User folder. This is probably why you see the system slowing down.
I would suggest putting those files that need to be encrypted on a FlashDrive or some other external protected medium. Using FileVault is fraught with problems such as those I describe and more. Undoing FileVault can be a major task.

  • Best Option to Improve Computer Speed Using External Hard Drive?

    Hi!
My eMac's 80 gig hard drive is full - mainly due to music, movies and photos - so it is slow and I can't add new media. I cloned the whole hard drive to a 1TB external drive. The computer boots from the external drive. The hard drive is connected to the computer via a FireWire 800 to Firewire 400 adapter cable. I am running Leopard. My RAM is maxed out.
When I boot from the external HD, I seem to get a boost in performance but this seem intermittent and/or not substantial. I have not tested it with a stop watch yet.
I want to get the best performance from my machine. Please help me with the best option. What sounds best?
    1) Forget about cloning. Copy my music, movies and pictures to the external hard drive. Delete these media files from the original eMac to free up space. Run the eMac from the internal drive and access these files from the external drive.
    2) Boot from the cloned external hard drive and use computer like that.
    3) Will it help if the internal eMac HD is not so full? Does this matter if I am booting up from an external drive? Should I delete most or all files from the internal eMac HD and then boot the computer from the EXTERNAL drive? Would this speed things up?
    4) I am open to other suggestions.
The only reason I would not prefer option #2 is that I like to keep all my files on the same drive for backup purposes. I use Time Machine.
    Thanks!

Your Mac will run best and fastest if you run from the internal HD -- it's much faster than an external HD.
And it's best to keep at least 15% free on it; as your startup drive gets more full, your Mac will slow down. Just how much and when depends on a lot of things, but if it gets over 95% or so, it may get very sluggish, apps may hang or crash, data may be corrupted or lost, etc.
So your best bet would be a larger HD in your Mac. I don't know if that's possible or how much it would cost.
Second best would be to put selected data on an external HD, preferably not the one you use for Time Machine. As long as you format that HD for a Mac, Time Machine can back it up, along with your internal HD.
Put Music on the external for sure, and things like documents.
Photos and Video, maybe. Editing will be much slower on a F/W disk than your internal. So it might make sense to do editing on the internal, then put completed video on the external. You'll have to figure that out depending on what you're doing and how.

  • Slow Computer Speed

I have noticed over time that my computer seems to have slowed down considerably from when I first purchased 2 1/2 years ago. I get the pinwheel spinning often. The worst seems to be when new mail messages are downloading, all other activity or processing seems to be put on hold while the messages load. This is not the only time when the speed is reduced just the most dramatic. Any suggestions? Thanks.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Computer speed slowdown

This is a general question about the speed of my computer. I have noticed a progressive slowdown in being able to switch between applications, the speed of applications in general, and an increase in the level of my frustration with my Powerbook 15" G4. Processor is a 1.5 GHz PowerPC G4 with 256 MB RAM and 10 GB free of hard drive space (total capacity is about 75 MB).
I am unsure of what variables have changed, but I have had this computer for about 2 years now and I don't remember ever having this degree of slowness. It is so bad and I am wasting soooo much time just waiting and waiting and waiting, that I am considering upgrading to a newer computer. I noticed that the computer slows down terribly when running iPhoto 6 and/or iWeb, but there seems to be a slowness even when not running those apps. What can I do to investigate or remedy the problem? Do I need to sign up at the local Apple Genius bar for assistance?

Oh, I forgot you had them posted in your original post, my bad.
Here is the memory from Apple:

    512 mb is $150
    1 gb is $300
Here is the memory from Crucial:
    http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.asp?Mfr%2BProductline=Apple%2BPowerBook&m fr=Apple&tabid=AM&model=PowerBookG4+1.5GHz+%2815-inchDisplay%29&submit=Go
    512 mb is $69.91
    1 gb is $205.63
I would suggest you get at least a 512. I know apple doesn't have a 256, but Crucial does. Don't get it, get more than that, it will be worth it.
You would be fine with an additional 512, or depending on what kind of applications you use, you could get an additional 1 gig. I think you will be happy with the 512 mb extra, to give you 768 mb.
The reason I think it is Ram that is slowing you down is because having a few programs open uses more ram, and when it doesn't have enough, it uses the VM on the hard drive. When you tab between programs, it has to keep pulling it out of the VM on the hard drive, and thus makes it slow switching, and not snappy. With a 1.5 G4, it should definitely be snappy.
Let me know if you have any more questions!

  • LabVIEW MathScript computation speed improvement

I am using a MathScript node to make calculations on an sbRIO FPGA module and the speed of these computations is critical.  What are some ways to improve the speed of calculations and is there a faster way to do matrix calculations than MathScript?  If I make the MathScript portion into a subVI will it improve the speed of calculations?
    Thanks for any ideas
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Please look at the attached VI. It has your original .m code, my modifications to your .m code, and the G code equivalent to the modified .m code. First, let me describe to you the numbers I saw on a cRIO 9012 for each of the three approaches.
I ran each of the three approaches for hundred iterations, ignored the first 30 iterations to allow for memory allocations (which caused a huge spike in run-time performance on RT), and then took the average run-time for each loop iteration for the remaining iterations
    Original M: 485 msec/iteration
    Modified M: 276 msec/iteration
    G: 166 msec/iteration
The modifications I made to your .m code are the following:
    (1) Added ; to end of each line to suppress output (used for debugging)
    (2) Moved the random code generation out - used whitenoise (seems like that's what you were doing)
    (3) Switch on the data type highlighting feature. Noticed that majority of the data was casted to complex, although didn't seem like you needed the complex domain. The source was sqrt function. Modified it to using real(sqrt(...))
This improved performance by over 40%. I believe more can be squeezed if you follow the documentation - Writing MathScript for Real-Time Applications.
Then, I took the MathScript you had and wrote equivalent G leaving the algorithm as is. This gave us performance improvement of another 40% over the modified G. This is a known issue that on slow controllers MathScript adds a 2x penalty to equivalent G. We are currently investigating this issue and may be able to fix it in a future release.
If you profile the G code, you will notice that most of the time is spent in matrix multiplication. Unless you rethink your algorithm, I doubt this can improve further.
Let me know if you have questions

  • Extending Network why such differences in computer speeds?

Have airport extreme.  Added an airport express to extend range of network.  Checked speeds with speednet.  Speed 15mbps with macbook computer near extreme.  2 mbps for mb pro near right near airport express.  Any thoughts on why this would be happening?  Or does extending the range of the network by adding another router, slow down the network that much?  Thank you for your help.

The tool is your Mac laptop, AirPort Utility, and pen and paper.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click on a device on the left and look for information about that device on the right side of the window. Write down the name of the device and the AirPort ID number. Do the same for other devices on the network.
Turn off the wireless on your Mac and then move it very close to the remote "extending" device.
Turn the wireless on the Mac by clicking on the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the screen
Hold down the option key on the Mac while you click on the AirPort icon and you will see information displayed about the current connection
Look for the BSSID. That number should match the AirPort ID of the "extending" device if your configuration is correct.
If the BSSID matches the AirPort ID of the "main" router, your Mac is connecting to the "main" router and there is a a problem with the "extend" setup.

  • Computer to Computer Networking Crawls

    Hi All,
I have a very annoying problem. Sharing files between my iMac and Macbook take forever. 16 Minutes for a 250 MD folder. I end up having to use a flash drive just to share files back and forth. Both these computers are within 5 feet of eachother, and the Time Capsule is within 10-15 feet of both macs. Even loading up a folder (like a user's folder) is painfully slow. Copying a 96 MB file took 3 minutes and I have a hard-drive connected to my Time Capsule and it took about 45 seconds... what's going on? Help!
    Thanks,
    Jon

I might have discovered the answer myself: change the default name of the network to something short without an apostrophe.
When I did that, I was able to create the network.
Note: my name is long and that is the name my computer has for me, so the default network name on mine was a mile long and full of punctuation.
Note: The first 20 or so times I tried to create the network, it wouldn't let me change the name, which I was going to change just for a laugh as opposed to doing it to not get the error message.
Maybe a coincidence and maybe not. Does this make sense? Has anyone else had this happen?

  • I have a macbook air with osx 10.6.8 and it has a 1.4 GHz intel core duo processor and 2GB 1067 Mhz DDR3. I want to use icloud but am afraid buying the version of osx that is required will bog my computer speed down, or change the user inerface. I

I am not computer savy and like my macbook air because as a college student, and father that is very busy, I don't have to learn to re-use it every month after it crashes from a virus. Am I able to load the new version of osx that icloud requires onto this computer without changing it substantially or slowing it down?

If you want to sync it to the iPad from that Mac, you need to upgrade it to at least 10.5.8.
If you want to copy the music to another Mac, you don't. Move the iTunes folder of the item in the Finder's sidebar over as you would any other folder. If you put it somewhere other than the Music folder, launch iTunes with the Option key held down and point it to that location.

  • Computer Speed/ Audio & Graphics

    Hello,
My computer has gotten really slow as of recent and I cannot diagnose why. Any streaming videos begin to pause on and off and the graphics are in turn rarely in time with the audio. However, I think my computer is being slow elsewhere in a general manner. I’m no computer expert, but I’ve cleaned my browser caches manually. I’ve used MacKepper FastCleanup as well, eliminating some more caches and some binaries. I’ve also cleared out a lot of clutter on my desktop because I heard that takes up processing space. And while streaming videos (even a DVD in my drive) I keep the computer next to a fan in case it is heat that causes the issue. I’m not sure what else to do.
Also, this may be unrelated, but a month earlier the audio kept dropping out consistently in all mediums (iTunes, youtube, netflix, etc.) I could have it set at a volume, but then the icon would go grey rather than black and there would be a "Universal No” symbol over the icon. Also, as a result of the audio going on and off, the video would just stop. It got to the point where I could not watch anything. As of lately, the volume adjustment has only been really slow to readjust after I’ve pressed the increase/decrease buttons.

Melophage,   I was also verifying my disk permissions as suggested by Mac-world (http://http://www.macworld.com/article/1052220/repairpermissions.html), and it did indeed pick up a corruption in the volume Macintosh Volume HD. I don't know what this is, but a window popped up and explained the necessary steps to repairing it as seen in the image attached.
I followed these instructions, pressing on Command and R simultaneously, but another window pops up (image is below) rather than the apple logo as promised. If I try to continue the origninal instructions, my computer just blurts the incorret keyboard sound until I lift my fingers. The image is attached below.
I'm not sure what to do. Any thoughts? Thanks

  • Does turning off universal access increase computer speed

Does it increase performance if you turn everything off?

    No.
Obviously, every process uses some resources, but look in Activity Monitor. The system and core apps are probably using around 5% of your CPU. Unless you need every last cycle of power out of that thing for that protein folding model work, turning stuff off is not going to provide any advantage in speed.

  • Computer Speed Getting Slower

I purchased the G5 dual 2.3 last spring just after they were released and shortly after added 2 gigs of ram to it to help with real time playback during video editing. After I put it in I did a test to see the improvement and was pleasantly surprised that I could playback 5 layers of video with multiple filters on them without rendering in Final Cut. Since then, however, I've noticed a steady decline in my computer's ability to do what I figured the RAM was there to do. I haven't experienced any faulty RAM horror stories like the ones we've all heard. It just seems to me that my computers performance is getting slower and not able to handle as much realtime playback. I have been looking in MacAddict and MacWorld to see if they pinpoint this problem, but have found other RAM articles that don't apply to this. Is there something that I could do to boost performance and possibly restore things to the way they were when I first installed the RAM?

What free space do you have on your FCP scratch disk? Performance will drop as your HD's fill up.
Try freeing some space on your boot drive and video/data drive.
You are using a seperate boot HD and video/data HD? If not you'll find this helps.

  • Minimum computer speed and size for Logic

Am thinking of gettting Logic Pro with my comparatively small G4- Am I looking for trouble or should I go for express until I can get a bigger box- what would you recommend as your minimum requirements for speed hard drive etc? Thanks !
    Dual 800 MHzPower Mac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1.25GB SDRAM

You should be able to play back many audio files -
and freeze files ( since they are audio files ). But
if you want to use bigger, modern plugs you'll need a
node or PCI solution. With your present config, you
should have little problem playing back as many audio
files as you need - you'll just spend a lot of time
waiting for freeze files to render. Many 3rd party
AUs will be out of reach - as well as stuff like
sculpture but if you are patient and resourceful, it
should be OK to get you by for many productions. I
have a Dual G4 ( 1.25 ) and can do a lot with it and
Logic. Mostly, this answer depends on what plugins
you use and if they are realtime. I can't say Express
will really reduce the load - just restrict you from
attempting to while making you work slower as far as
editing. Personally, I wouldn't bother with LE. If
you like LP's plugs you can get a node machine or buy
a new machine in a few months...
    J
justin - thanks for your reply- pardon my ignorance on this, but what is a freeze file and what is a node machine?
    Thanks

  • Internet/Computer Speed Slow Since Safari 5

Ever since I installed Safari 5 on my iMac, it seems to be having trouble surfing the internet with any sort of normal speed. Since it's a mac, you'd assume that it would be super fast like it is over the wireless connection on my Acer Aspire, but Safari 5 appears to have killed it.
I've tried clearing the cache, getting rid of the non-mac plugins and unplugging and replugging the cable connected to the router on both ends. It seems to only be a temporary solution (Internet is only at a normal speed for less than 5 minutes)Is there something that I'm missing that needs to be fixed or something that I should try?
The specs of my iMac (G5+iSight):
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac8,1
    Version: 10.6.4
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores:2
    L2 Cache: 6 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: IM81.00C1.B00
    SMC Version (system): 1.29f1
Any help would be great at this point

I have nothing too earth shattering to add at this point, other than to say:
Have you tried using Firefox as your browser? If so, does it still run as expected?
Clearing caches usually slows things down for a while. The cache allows for speedier downloading of previously visited web pages, but they can become bloated and unmanageable. I haven't cleared by caches for years, but my web experience remains satisfactory.
All web browsers are resource hogs. Nearly every article I have read about speeding up the net experience recommends periodically closing and re-opening the web browser. I usually do it a couple of times a day on the weekends when I do more web surfing that what's good for me.
Sorry I can't answer your particular question, but that's my two cents.
