Filter characteristics in webi or bex?

Hi guys,
To filter characteristics, we can restrict them in bex query designer with variables(then carried over to webi automatically), or filter them in webi query panel with webi query filter.  Which one is recommended, especially with regard to performance?
Thanks,
Chris

I'd like to take the question just a little further.  Iu2019m experiencing a significant change in the runtime/performance of a WebI report when I move a characteristic restriction from the BEx query to the WebI report:
We are using BW 7.01, BOE XI 3.1 SP 2 FP 2.7. The BEx query uses a MultiProvider.
My WebI report sitting on that universe runs consistently in about 50 seconds. If I remove a simple characteristic restriction from the BEx query and attempt to replicate the logic of the restriction in the WebI report, the runtime jumps to more than 5 minutes. The characteristic restriction is an exclusion type of filter, so: Characteristic 1 Not Equal to A, B or C (these values have the red u2018=u2019 sign next to them in the Filter > Characteristic Restriction pane of BEx Query Designer).
The runtime increases significantly when I remove this restriction from the BEx query and add a query filter in my WebI report (using the dimension object) for Characteristic 1 Not In List (A;B;C). Iu2019ve also tried changing this to 3 separate u2018Not Equal Tou2019 filters, but this did not improve the performance.
Is it supposed to be more efficient to put the filter in the BEx Query instead of the WebI query?
Thanks for your insights!

  • Drill functionality on filter bar of Webi with BEx don't work

    Hi experts!
I'm with the same problem that other thread Drill Functionality not working. I'm working with webi and BEx on BO 4.0 SP5 Patch 2.
There is a fix prevision for this problem or a SAP note about this?

    Hi Gustavo,
As you can read from that thread, the feature you would like to have is extremely complex, there will  be some new capabilites with hierarchies in BI4.1 but I don't think this is among them.

  • Can we use Result from another query in Webi using Bex uery universe?

    Hi,
Can we use Result from another query filter option in Webi to create a report using a Bex Query universe?
I need to create a report using two universes, one is Bex Query Universe and the other is Orcle universe. I have two queries, one is using Oracle universe; the other using Bex Query universe. I need to pass the Oracle data from the Oracle query to the Bex Query query to get the matched data from SAP Bex query.
I used Result from another query in the query filter panel for the query using Bex query universe. But I got an error saying that 'A filter contains a wrong value. you cannot run this query. (Error: WIS 00007). The data used in the filter on both sides are the same. they are char.
I have tested by using two queries from the same Bex query universe to see if the Result from another query filter option works. And I got the same error.
Has anyone run into the same issue and if this is possible and what should be the solution?
    Thanks in advance!

    In that situation:
Create two queries : Oracle and BW query.
    @ Report:
As you have to see result set from both the Dataproviders, correct? To achieve thise one must have common dimension objects to merge them at report and use Objects those are coming from both queries to use them in single Table/Report.
Unless you don't use Merge Dimensions, you don't get a chane to use both queries objects in single Table/Report. (It will give tooltip saying: You can't drop here -- Incompatable Objects)
In case, if you don't have common dimensions, change object definitions to Detail objects, for those required.
    Hope it helps you.
    Thank You!!

  • Webi Vs Bex Analyzer for the same query

    Hi Experts ,
I face an issue in Webi Vs Bex Analyzer for the same query :
    Output of Bex query:
    Transport System     Location ID     Quantity
    PIPEC1-Z4          LOCCP1-Z4     1,000.000 BBL
                              LOCCP2-Z4     400 TO
                              LOCGAL-Z4     *
                              LOCRAS-Z4     200 TO
                              Result     *
Here as the Unit of measure is different, the RESULT displays a *
Only in cases where the unit of measure is the same, the result
    is displayed correctly.
However in webi, the sum function blindly adds up without any possibility
to check whether the uom is the same.
How can I check to add only when the units are the same ?
    Regards, Jerin.

    Hi Jerin,
Each Key Figure used in a BW query can have up to three different sets of information:
Numeric value of the Key Figure corresponding to the Key Figure without the unit.
Unit or Currency information, A Dimension object with character format that contains the unit or currency. For example, 'USD', 'u20AC', 'km'
Formatted value, representing the user-specific formatting. A Dimension object with character format that contains the Key Figure and the unit (formatted value) based on user preferences configured on the SAP server. For example, '200 USD', '345 u20AC', '25 km'
Each Key Figure is represented with a Measure object in a Class u201CKey Figures.u201D In the case where the Key Figure is configured in BW with a unit, an additional Dimension object will be added representing the unit information. The u201CFormattedu201D value represents the numeric value Formatted as a string value, following the user-specific formatting settings.
Or if doesn't appear the Unit, for some CKF or RKF it happens, you can add to your BEx query and then to the universe the unit or currency and create a separate dimension with that information.
    I hope this help you.

  • Webi vs BEx

I am look at reporting (particular Management Information) in the Finance arena.
We have have both SAP BW and BO licenses.
My view at the moment is that we should look at the following reporting tools:
    Xcelcius for Executive Dash Boards
WebI (or BEx Analyser) for data analysis.
I do not see Crystal reports or Voyager in the mix as the above tools fill the gaps - correct me if I am wrong.
I am finding it hard to distinguish between using WebI or BEx u2013 the decider could be that BEx development seems to be frozen by SAP (prior to it being replaced with BO Advanced Analysis).
So in summary I would use Xcelcius and WebI with SAP BI as my Data Warehouse.
Do you see any negatives in this approach?
    Thanks
    Patrick

Web Intelligence (called Interactive Analysis in XI 4.0) is an ad-hoc reporting tool ie. you can let your users build their own reports by quering snapsnots of the data
BEx (to be replaced by Advanced Analysis) is an OLAP tool ie. you can use it to navigate and perform data analysis in OLAP structured data.
Crystal Reports is a standard reporting tool providing you with very sophisticated formating and calculation capabilities.
Voyager is the former BusinessObjects OLAP tool and is replaced with Advanbced Analysis.
In my opinion WebI and BEx (or better Interactive Analysis & Advanced Analysis) do not directly compete. If you want your users to perform data analysis directly on the cube use BEx (Adavanced Analysis). If you want your users to pull their data and build ad hoc reports that answer business questions with adavanced graphical capabilities use Web Intelligence.
WebI also offers analysis capabilites (drill-up, drill down, drill through) but the BEx tools are more efficient when it comes to the SAP  BW OLAP data model.
    Hope this helps.

  • Regular Expression Filter Mapping In Web.xml

I have a situation where I need to filter URL's that don't have a file extension. There are hundreds of URL's, so i can't specify each one separately.
From what I understand, you can have a filter mapping in web.xml to map certain file extensions to a filter, such as :
    <filter>
    <filter-name>MyFilter</filter-name>
    <filter-class>com.filters.MyFilter</filter-class>
    </filter>
    <filter-mapping>
    <filter-name>MyFilter</filter-name>
    <url-pattern>*.esi</url-pattern>
    </filter-mapping>
...where all files of extension .esi go through the filter. Additionally, I want to map all url's WITHOUT a file extension to pass through this filter. So if I have a request for "http://myserver.com/home" it will pass through the filter.
Does weblogic support regular expressions for pattern matching in filter-mapping? If so, can you provide examples or links to documentation?
    Thanks,
    Jim

No, regular expressions are not supported. You can specify the mapping with extensions, or with paths, not at the same time in the same mapping specification. However, you can specify two servlet mappings, one with extension, and one with path.
The exact wording from the spec (2.4) is as follows:
In the Web application deployment descriptor, the following syntax is used to define
    mappings:
    • A string beginning with a ‘/’ character and ending with a ‘/*’ suffix is used
    for path mapping.
    • A string beginning with a ‘*.’ prefix is used as an extension mapping.
    • A string containing only the ’/’ character indicates the "default" servlet of
the application. In this case the servlet path is the request URI minus the context
path and the path info is null.
    • All other strings are used for exact matches only.

  • Dynamic filter on time characteristics on OLAP SAP BEX query based universe

    Dear all,
I'm currently working on the integration between SAP NetWeaver BI 7.0 and SAP BusinessObjects XI 3.1 FP 1.5 via integration kit.
I've built an OLAP universe on the top of a BW query based on a multiprovider that contains 10 infocubes.
Everything works fine but I need to create a filter in the OLAP universe that allows to restrict data by current date (e.g. using TIME characteristic of Infocube such as 0CALDAY or 0CALMONTH). From that filter we could start creating other conditions to compare data to different time periods.
I've already tried to use a SAP exit variable in  a BW query but this kind of object would restrict query data only by current date and for example it would be impossible to browse data by previous years (to bypass this problem we could use restricted key figures with different offsets but we have too many key figures in the query and the number of restrictions
    would rise exponentially).
In a relational DataBase we can do that using a "where condition" based on 'CURRENTDATE' (SQL DB2 syntax).
Now, we need to apply the same logic but translated in MDX syntax.
Is it possible to enter a dynamic filter in the OLAP universe or just fixed or promt values ?
    Any advise?
    Thanks in advance.
    Best Regards.
    M.

    Hi Ingo,
    1) My question is: "How can I have to manage variable in BEX queries and in the UNIVERSE in order to obtain the maximum flexibility to create reports with measures on actual day (for example) without asking the user to promt a value ?"
I want to use an unique BEX query to define an unique UNIVERSE. On this UNIVERSE I want to create many reports (actual day, previous day, and so on).
If I restrict 0CALDAY with an EXIT variable then shall I be able to create a different restrictions on the same Universe based on 0CALDAY ?
    2) Another question is:
Is it possible to insert an XML / MDX filter on the OLAP Universe with dynamic derivation of the system date ?
    For example:
    Instead of this:
    <FILTER KEY="[0FISCYEAR].[LEVEL01].[NAME]">
        <CONDITION OPERATORCONDITION="Equal">
            <CONSTANT CAPTION="Z12008"></CONSTANT>
        </CONDITION>
    </FILTER>
Is it possible to insert a tag with a dynamic function to derive the system date ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Best Regards.

  • How to select more than one free characteristics in web report?

    Hi,
From the performance point of view, I want to select more than one free characteristics to be displayed in WEB report.
I know in BEx Analyzer, we can do this by right mouse click and choose' query property' from the context menu, all the free characteristics are displayed in the popup window. But in WEB report these free char don't displayed in the 'query property' popup window.
Could anyone tell me how to implement this in WEB report?
    Eileen

    Hi,
each free characteristics in the list has two functions beside it, 'drilldown in rows' and 'drilldown in columns', but this functions as select only one free characteristics, each time you select one, the report will be loaded again.
if I want to select like 10 free characteristics, the report will be refreshed and reloaded 10 times.
my question is that how can I select these 10 free characteristics once to improve the performance.
your help will be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Variable filter selection in Web Template

Hello we have 0VENDOR as BEx setting for Query Def. Filter Value Selection as 'D only values in InfoProvider', i've a mandator variable on 0Vendor for a query and when i run in Bex it works fine like the selection of variable brings up only the values in the InfoProvider.
I've the same query attached to a Webtemplate, and when i run the Web Template and in Value selection of the Variable brings up all the values from Master Data instead of the Infoprovider.
Any idea how to make it work in Web. btw we're in BI 7.
    thanks

    Mayil
I don't think you can on the variables screen, however if it was feasible you could use a drop down box and have it look at posted values only. However this will only be available after the initial view of the query comes up.

  • Swap characteristics in web reports

    Hi all
In web reports you can use drop down boxes / radio button groups / check boxes to select filter values for characteristics. Besides these boxes give the opportunity to select one or more <b>key figures</b> you might want to see in the web report at the same time.
I am looking for a feature that allows me to select the (only) <b>characteristic</b> I want to see in my web report. For example I would like to see sales volume per region, or per sales employee, or per month.
    The standard options are:
navigation block: however, this will be a 2 step approach (remove drill down by regio and add drill down by sales employee)
context menu: swap region by sales employee. However, the swap options presented are always ALL free characteristics. In my query I have about 25 free characterics, which I all show in the navigation block, but for my swap option I would only like to present a subset of 5 of these characteristics.
What I am looking for is a 1 step swap option (or selection like radio button) that allows me to exchange between a subset of my free characteristics.
I hope question is clear....Can somebode help me with this?

    Soniya,
Just put the controlling area object in the filter. This will solve your problem.
