Final cut for beginners

Are there any tutorials for beginners for final cut pro?

I completely agree with the two podcasts.  The MacBreak Studio postcast is by the same author(s) as the Ripple Training videos (Steve Martin - NOT the commedian - and Mark Spensor), and basically are a vehicle to support and garner interest in the training videos as they "touch" on the same material and examples.
There are a couple Crreative Cow tutorials, including some produce by Richard Harrington (Photoshop, After Effects, Premier, FCP, Motion ..... ect.).  I like his as it gives the you good exposure to all the possiblities available, as well as how each produce (Adobe and Apple) can be use to support and enhance the features of each vendors production.
While, ALL these podcasts will, eventually, give the novice insites into FCPX, for me, spending the time progressing through a logically planned, cohessive video course is well worth the cost of either Izzy's, Ripple Training, Linda.com... etc. courses.  I would much prefer spending the $40 on a complete 5 hr course, that will cover 99% of what my client/boss will request, than spending 100+ hrs searching for the same free content AFTER the client asks and I have to say "Let me get back to you on that".
I guess it boils down, is your time worth more than the cost of a course.
I have used many a YouTube search to find a quick answer to a problem, and it is the perfect vehicle if you are just getting into editing, but if you intend on furthering your career, than a course is a no brainer..
For me, that is...  Your milage may very... ;-)

  • Final Cut For Mac os X PowerPC 10.4.11

    Hello
I am looking for Final Cut (Dosent matter Version or what kind of Final Cut) for Mac Os X PowerPC Version 10.4.11 is there any which I can buy
    Thanks PwN

There is a big inconsistency in the information you provide. You say 10.4.11 PowerPC, but your hardware is described as a "Mac Pro", which certainly is NOT a PowerPC machine. If you indeed have a Mac Pro, then, depending on the model, you'll get more options if you first update the OS to at least Snow Leopard.
Even if you do have a PowerPC mac, then your choices of OS end at Leopard (10.5), and your choices of software are much more limited.
I think you'd need to go Final Cut Express 3 or older,  and Final Cut Pro 6 or older (FCP 6 requires 10.5); newer versions were all Intel only.

If I need to buy 15 Final Cut for the university. Do I have to do all the process 15 times?

    Final Cut Pro is an app for Macs and not an iOS app for an iPhone or iPad. You will need the link for Apple software volume licensing for education. That information and the phone number to call is available on this webpage;

  • Help with sequence settings in final cut for project with 2 different frame rates.

I really need help with this one! I finished editing a wedding video and realized after exporting that it was filmed in two different frame rates. This has happened before but I converted the footage to match and fixed the problem. In this case, the footage is part 30fps and part 60fps. The majority of it was filmed in 30fps. I cannot convert the 60 to 30 without the slow motion effect which I do not need so I have to find a way to burn this to a DVD without it looking messed up! The video was shot with two Canon 7ds if that helps anything. The first sequence I set at 29.97 and exported as a quicktime movie and all the footage filmed in 60 looked perfect and the footage in 30 looked jittery. Then I tried the sequence at 59.97 and it switched. The footage filmed at 30 looked good and the 60 was cropped in. I am so confused! Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks for your help Michael! The frame rates are 29.97 1920 x 1080 and 59.94 1280 x 720. I did a control click on the clips in final cut and viewed the item properties/format to find this info. The Canon 7d is a DSLR but we use it for video. As for my workflow, the first thing I do is import the footage onto my computer and then drag the clips into mpeg streamclip. I choose apple prores 422 and uncheck the interlaced box. Once this is done I import the .mov files into final cut. The sequence automatically sets itself to whatever clip I drag in first so it originally set as 29.97. When I finished editing wedding video, I export it to a quicktime movie and choose whatever settings match the sequence, in this case apple prores 422 1920 x 1080 30p. Once that is done I use iDVD to burn the discs.
I knew something was wrong when I watched the quicktime movie and all the 30fps footage was jittery and most of the cross dissolves looked strange. That's when I figured out the footage was at two different frame rates. What I don't understand is why whatever the sequence is set at in final cut, the clips of the opposite frame rate look right but the clips set at the matching frame rate don't???

  • Best high quality format to export from final cut for DVD

What is the best format to export in final cut to put onto a DVD?
Mostly its footage from VHS so it doesnt have to be awesome but need some tips
    cheers

You can't get any better than what your Sequence settings were in FCP. Export a self-contained or reference movie (File->Export->QuickTime Movie) from FCP. Do NOT recompress all frames, but do include DVD-SP markers (if any).
Bring the resulting file into Compressor and choose the appropriate DVD preset. You can duplicate, then modify a preset if needed.
You'll have two files from Compressor: an MPEG-2 video file (.m2v) and a Dolby Digital audio file (.ac3).
Import those two files into DVD-SP for authoring and burning.

  • Compressing video from Final Cut for iWeb

I use Final Cut Pro and want to post the video on iweb, but the files are too large . How can i compress these video down to 10 MB so the page will load quicker?

An accurate response demands more details specific to your scenario. General suggestions include making your movie shorter in length and compressing your movie at lower data rate, smaller video dimensions and using a more acceptable codec for web delivery.

  • Exporting From Final Cut for Dropbox

I have a 2GB Dropbox account that I would like to utilize as a way for my clients to view their projects. Specifically I have a 30:00 program that I need to export from Final Cut to Dropbox. Could someone suggest the best export settings to create a less than 2GB file? Every setting I try always produces a file greater than 2GB. If you could please be specific as possible; do I export using Quicktime or Quicktime conversion? What compression do I use? Etc. Thank you so much.

I don't know...i'd go with the H.264 for iPod video and iPhone preset in Compressor. Oughta squish it down pretty good and still look nice.

  • Please help with Exporting from Final Cut for Youtube

Hey guys, your help would be greatly appreciated!
I shot a bunch of clips using 'ishowu' with the '640x480' option enabled... then imported them into Final Cut to make a movie.
My question is, now that the movie is done, what is the best way to export for youtube, using what dimensions? I tried to export using 1280x720 for youtubes widescreen, but it stretches out my whole video making everything look abnormally wide. How can I get the best video size but without it streching out my video?

    Export it using 640x480.
There is no point in making it larger because you cannot put in information that is not there originally.
640 x 480 is the optimum size. Make it any bigger and it will just appear degraded.

  • Final Cut for music videos

Is Final Cut a good program for making good music videos? I wanted to make a AMV with effects somewhat like the ones found here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J52FFA2_flo . I know this one is EXTREMELY technical, so i won't be able to actually pull it off even if it was possible. But can i do a video like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYd3fOpgrK4 with FC? Thanks

alright. then what kind of programs would you use to make videos such as the ones i've linked. I've made music videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDVp4coIE5M and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AM974k_-Bqc are two that i have already made. These were made using Windows Movie Maker. This http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dp4nukaC6z8 was compiled using iMovie. So i have an idea of what i'm doing, and what i'm trying to do. I just want to know what kind of new capabilities will be available to me with FC. I have done research using google, youtube, and looking around these forums to find out the capabilities of FC. I appologize for misunderstanding your previous posts, but i do appritiate your help on the matter.

Hi, my name is Nicolas Russo I´m from Argentina, I´m Editor in chief here in Buenos Aires from a new news channel that
has debut on past Monday for the first time and is broadcasted to all Latin America on the cable. The channel has a initial investment of 10 million dollars.
The workflow of the channel is a tapeless workflow based on Panasonic P2 cards and Final Cut pro. I´ve reach this forum because I would like to have feedback with anyone about a
couple of aspects of the Workflow of P2 and FCP,especially about archiving and the logging of the footage. As long as I could research nobody uses FCP as their only platform for news gathering, they used it as part of their workflow but no as we are doing that have all the bays working with it.
I leave you my mail in case someone is interested (please contact me) [email protected]

  • Appropiate Final Cut for a G3 iBook 600MHz?

I want to edit some videos I found, what version and what OS can I use?
I need no fancy stuff, but I definitely need the extra audio tracks iMovie does not have.
    Thanks for your help.

    FCP 3. That's about it. FCP 4 requires a G4 Processor.
Even Final Cut Express requires a G4 processor.

  • Exporting AVCHD to mp4 from final cut for uploading to youtube (apple prores, .MOV, h264, x264, handbrake)

    Hello everybody,
I Edit 1920x1080 AVCHD in Final Cut 7. Working with apple prores to export video to mp4 and then upload it to youtube. The goal is obviously the least quality loss in the process and to get a file as light as possible. Which of these three options is correct?
    1. Export to mp4 from Final Cut (using quicktime conversion): h264 codec and bitrate 8000 kbps.
    2. Export to .MOV from Final Cut (using quicktime conversion): h264 codec. Then, use handbrake (mp4 / x264 ).
    3. Export apple prores sequence to. MOV from Final Cut (using quicktime movie). Then, use handbrake program (mp4 / X264 codec)
    thanks a lot!

One friend told me dont choose none of the three options...
Told me about exporting a reference movie from timeline and then take the reference file into compressor.
I finally took the reference file and took him to compressor. I installed x264 and got one .mov very heavy, so I had to use the handbrake to get less weight and get mp4.
I did the same operation in streamclip and got a mp4 file (x264) with same size than .mov (compressor). So in both cases, if I want the less size I have to go on 2 steps (first compressor or streamclip and then handbrake ..)
    any more suggestions? :-)

  • Importing dvd's to edit in final cut (for uni project- a movie trailer)

Hi, I need to edit down an existing movie into a ten minute trailer for a project at uni. Obviously there will be a disclaimer stating this is copyrighted footage and I am not passing the content off as my original work, only the edit (otherwise this would be plagiarism). The problem is I was advised by the lecturer to use handbreak, which doesn't rip into a suitable format. I need the files as DV or .mov ideally. Any freeware that is up to the task? Visualhub is no longer available, even though i would've happily paid a tenner for that. Anyone any ideas? This is a one of project so I don't fancy paying a lot for it. Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

  • How to get crisp jpeg images for slideshow on a Mac with Final Cut?

Hi, I imported a large number of jpegs into Final Cut Pro and when I export to Quicktime Movie (not modifying the sequence size or settings I notice the quality of the jpeg images looks rather washed out and a bit fuzzy. The image dimensions of the jpegs are actually 2848 x 4272 and I was originally using a sequence setting of 720 by 480 (which scaled the images to about 12%). I experimented with doubling the sequence setting to 1440 by 960 and scaled the images to about 25.5% - still a bit washed out look.
Basically this will be a presentation on a computer and output via projection. Looking for best possible and clearest photos. I experimented with iPhoto and when you play a slideshow it looks very crisp - this is what I am aiming for. When I export using the Slideshow export at the largest size 640 by 480 in iPhoto to quicktime - the quality seriously deteriorates.
What would be the best way to maintain the crispness of the photos in Final Cut for an export to Quicktime that would be show on a Mac via a projector? Thank you

Hi Nick, I do see information on creating a slideshow with Quicktime at: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/tutorials/slideshow.html
however it appears Quicktime X removed that capability. There is no 'open image sequence' option from the File menu in Quicktime X.
If I do end up sticking with Final Cut - would you recommend any codec and/or dimension size that would result in the best quality or the most crisp image? I also need a few fade in's and out's on various parts - I don't believe I would have the control without Final Cut.
Would resizing the image files in Photoshop to 1920 pixels by 1280 before importing them into Final Cut result in crisper images? Thanks.
