Final Cut Studio Tutorial
Please pardon my ignorance - but I did a search and came up with a ****-ton possible answers.
I am interested in Final Cut as opposed to what I have been using: iMovie
I have messed around with FCP a little bit - but I am lost.
Can somebody please tell me of a video tutorial for a moron like myself.
I am talking about stuff so basic - that you would wonder how I have even know how to turn on the power to my Mac.
Elementary stuff!
That is what I need - an elementary tutorial on Final Cut Pro, please.
Thank you for your time.
Take care.
Learning FCP is going to take some solid initiative on your part.
Carve out a few hours a day get some face time with this program.
Keep the manuals on your desk, not in the bookshelf across the room.
They can be a little dense, but if you read up on the specifics of what you are trying to do at the time, at least you will be able to ask informed questions and tailor your searches accordingly. I have been using FCP for about 8 years now, and still crack the manuals about once a week.
Free tuts are easy to come by if you know what you are looking for.
Youtube has a zillion.
If you need more structure, and don't mind spending a few bucks, lynda.com rocks your socks for learning resources.
As with any professional application, your skills will never be perfected. Just ask any of the gurus in this forum - some of them are older than Yoda and are still learning new stuff.

Best Final Cut Studio tutorial?
Hi,
I would like to know where to find the best tutorial for Final Cut Studio. I have found some free downloads on the internet, but I would like the best DVD on the market to learn about final cut pro, soundtrack and all the other programs in the Final Cut Studio package.
Best,
OksonI don't know specifically about "DVD" tutorials. But lynda.com has some solid titles for apps in the Suite. There's also Ripple Training. Then as far as books go, the Apple Pro Training Series are quite thorough and easy to read.

Is it unlawful to sell my used final cut studio version 3 software?
I had listed my software at eBay after deauthorizing it from my Mac Pro. Was I under a contract with Apple that prevented me from reselling the software?(I'm afraid I don't have time to read pages of fine print.) Here's the message I just received from eBay after the closed my auction:

H5265eBay heavily "overprotects" copyright owners.
The BSA is hired by Apple to look out for copyright violations. They simply go after everything without any investigation. eBay plays along and so you are the one with the problem to do something completely lega.
Here is the relevant section of FCS's SLA:

All components of the Apple Software are provided as part of a bundle and may not be separated from the bundle and distributed as standalone applications.
This means that you are allowed to sell the package if you are the original owner of the software. -

Does any version of Final Cut studio support Mpeg4 Editing?
I have Final Cut Studio HD (version in the black box). I'm looking at buying a camera, and the one that seems to be the best fit is the Panasonic TM90. It's best mode is shooting progressive video with the Mpeg4 codec. Does my version support this? Does any version support this?
If you shoot any format OTHER than 1080p60, you use Log and Transfer to bring in the footage. Tutorial:
http://library.creativecow.net/ross_shane/tapeless-workflow_fcp-7/1
For 1080p60, you need ClipWrap2 from divergentmedia.com. Because it is a non-standard shooting format.
And no, FCP 7 and earlier do not support editing from that camera without transcoding to ProRes. -

Although this tutorial suggests creating a bootable drive with the OS installer on it, that's not necessary. You can just create disk images as he describes and mount them.
I am not sure why you did not just post this tutorial instead of requesting me to describe a workflow.
In the time it took me to research a workflow for Pacifist for a link for the OP, it seems he spent 6 hours of wasted time.
Michael:
Have you ever "uninstalled" Rosetta after installing it on a Lion or Mt. Lion Mac? and
I believe you told me earlier you do not use FCS2. Is that correct and if so what is your connection to offering so much repeated installation advice about a product that you do not use yourself?
I note that I also do not use FCS2, but I am attempting to get a copy to attempt to implement the Jeremy Johnstone "Text Edit" solution (no dangers of using Terminal). Unfortunately, all sources of purchasing a copy of FCS2 are just too expensive for me with no ultimate need for the program, after I figure out how to install it.
If you know of a copy of FCS2 that can be "lent" to me for "fair use" educational means of figuring out how to install it (and thereafter erasing that copy from my Mac), please let me know. -
I purchased Final Cut Studio as a new application not as an upgrade. It downloaded to my computer as an upgrade. Could I have purchased an upgrade for a lessor price and still loaded it to my hard drive?
It downloaded to my computer...
From "Before You Install Final Cut Studio" documentation:
"Available Disk Space
• 4 GB of disk space required to install all applications (Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, Soundtrack Pro, Motion, Cinema Tools, LiveType, Compressor, and Apple Qmaster)
• Additional 42 GB required to install all optional templates, loops, content, and tutorials (may be installed on separate disks):
• 9 GB for DVD Studio Pro content
• 8 GB for Motion templates, Motion Series LiveFonts, and tutorial media
• 8 GB for Soundtrack Pro content
• 12 GB for LiveType content
• 5 GB for Apple Pro Training Final Cut Studio Tutorials media"
FCS is available as a download? Where? -
I installed Final cut studio today.
When I went to do the Blue Horizon tutorial I could not locate the video and audio clips as outlined in the Final Cut Pro 5 section of the video. I followed all the steps exactly as outlined on the video.
Any help in locating these clips so I can proceed with the tutorial would greatly be appreciated.
Thank You,
TimNot sure where you put them? Try Spotlight.
You probably forgot to copy the resources from the installer DVDs to your hard drive. Pop the DVDs back into your optical drive.

Anamorphic Setup - Final Cut Studio Training
I inadvertedly posted this in the DVD SP forum. I'd like to move it here where it belongs.
I just got my Final Cut Pro Studio a couple weeks ago, had to finish a project that I was doing in FCE and iDVD, and am now reviewing the tutorial on the Final Cut Studio Training DVD.
One of the first steps is to setup the session to "DV-NTSC Anamorphic". Since I had already blown past that 2 week ago, I did not see it this time, nor could I find the correct menu to make that setting for the tutorial. So I just blew by it; realizing that I'd find out sooner or later what the cost would be.
I found out: When doing the Motion segment and importing the final "TrailerLowerThirds" back into FCP, that part is compressed horizontally with black side bars on the right and left.
3 questions:
How do I make that setting if I've been running FCP already?
What does that do to the project, the clips, anything else?
If I were to make this mistake on one of my projects, how would I recover?
So far I've only been making projects in DV-NTSC 2:3 (I guess that's the right way to say it). Any insights would be appreciated.
G5 dual core 2Ghz, 2.5 GB, 160, 300GB & 300GBfw Mac OS X (10.4.6) FCE HD, FCSP5.1My second question was: "What does that do to the project, the clips, anything else?"
The essential thing to bear in mind is that 4:3 and 16:9 anamorphic projects (in the SD world) have the SAME resolution: 720x480 pixels for NTSC, 720x576 for PAL. Because the resolution is the same, but the apparent frame size is different, it can lead to confustion, and it's easy to get it wrong - especially over there in the US where anamorphic broadcasting of SD material never took off, and thus widescreen sets were never mass market before HD.
(The situation here in Europe is different.).
Have a read of this for clarity: http://www.helerab.fi/widescreen/
The anamoprhic easy setup just tells FCP that you are capturing anamorphic material, and that new sequences should be anamorphic by default. You can override these defaults if necessary, but the easy setup just makes it harder to mess up.
The important thing when going to DVD is to keep the workflow anamorphic all the way through: output anamorphic material from FCP, make sure material is transcoded to mpeg (whether through compressor, iDVD or Quicktime) with anamorphic settings intact; and in your DVD authoring application, make sure projects, menus and tracks are created or flagged as 16:9.
The end result is an anamorphic DVD.
Your DVD player has a menu where you tell it what type of TV it's connected to - whether 4:3 or widescreen (and if it's a 4:3 set, how it should handle widescreen material: either letterboxing it or "cropping" it via pan/scan).
I've started noticing in other posts that some people think that if you have anamorphic material you should set your DVD player to 16:9. This is NOT A GOOD IDEA (unless the DVD player is attached to a widescreen TV, in which case you have it set to 16:9 already!) Just set the DVD player once and leave it alone.
Hope these observations help get you started. If you understand what's going on with anamorphic media, you're less likely to make mistakes. Best of luck. -
Final Cut Studio 2....Is there a book for dummies?
OK, I have the Final Cut Studio 2. I watched the DVD and i'm still a little duh on it haha. I checked out books online for dummies like me and can't find one specifically for Final Cut Studio 2. Is there a book out there somewhere? Or will one of the other books help me. I need to know everything I guess. Thanks sooooo much!
You didn't look hard enough, nor on Amazon.com...

But that is for a VERY outdated version of FCP, FCP 4.5, from 2004. Here are others...

Final Cut Studio 2: Requirements and Recommendations
Hello Final Cut Studio 2 Experts,
I'm considering purchasing Final Cut Studi 2, and to make sure that I'll benefit from the full range of specific application (FCS/motion/color...) and I'd like to ask few questions (5 main points) regarding requirements and recommendations. So, please be prepared for much reading as I am not an expert on the matter. I like to know if my computer accepts any further hardware parts highly recommended and if I can purchase and install them myself. And yes, you should also know that I intend to use a Panasonic multi-format (HD/SD) camera for capturing and exporting videos.
N.B. Please note that the full list of my Hardware contents appear at the bottom of this text.
THANKS IN ADVANCE for your expert advise!
So, here we go:
Application-Specific Requirements
Final Cut Studio
Capturing HD resolution video using the ProRes 422 format requires a Mac Pro with an Intel Xeon processor or a G5 Quad computer and a qualified third-party capture card.
1) Do I need an Intel Xeon processor? If yes, can I purchase and install the component by myself (like RAM)?
Motion
The standard graphics card in any Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, iMac with Intel Core Duo, Power Mac G5, or iMac G5; 1.25GHz or faster PowerBook G4; or 1.25GHz or faster flat-panel iMac:
ATI Radeon 9800, 9700 Pro, 9600 XT, or 9600 Pro
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 or 9600

For 16- and 32-bit rendering: a graphics card with at least 128MB of VRAM
2) Do I need one of the ATI Radeon 9800, 9700... or ATI Mobility Radeon? Why does my Hardware contents say ATI Radeon 9600, and not ATI Mobility Radeon 9600, is there a difference?
Color
The standard graphics card in any Mac Pro, 17-inch MacBook Pro, 24-inch iMac with Intel Core Duo, or 2.5GHz or faster Power Mac G5 Quad:
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600
ATI Radeon X1600

A display with 1680-by-1050 resolution or higher
A three-button mouse for full functionality
3) Do I need and ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 or ATI Radeon X1600?
DVD Studio Pro
For playback of DVD Studio Pro 4-authored HD DVDs: a Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G5 or Intel Core Duo processor
For writing finished projects to disc: an Apple SuperDrive or other DVD recorder
For writing finished projects to a double-layer disc: a double-layer-compatible recorder and double-layer media
For transporting HD projects to a replicator: an external drive or Internet transfer of the project’s disk image
For transporting SD projects that contain copy-protection or dual-layer features to a replicator: a DLT drive, external drive, or Internet transfer of the project’s disk image
4) Do I have an Intel Core Duo processor? Do I need an Apple SuperDrive?
What is a "replicator"?
Application-Specific Recommendations
Motion
One of the following graphics cards is highly recommended:
ATI Radeon X1900 XT, X850 XT, X800 XT, or X1600
NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT, 6800 Ultra DDL, 6800 GT DDL, or Quadro FX 4500
For 32-bit rendering: a graphics card with 256MB of VRAM or more
Color
The following graphics card is highly recommended:
ATI Radeon X1900 XT
Dual displays with 1920-by-1200 or higher resolution
5) Do I have one of the highly recommended cards ATI Radeon X1900 XT etc...? How do I get it and can I install it myself?

ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 or 9600
NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT, 7300 GT, 6600, 6600 LE, FX Go5200, or FX 5200 Ultra
NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT, 7600 GT, 7300 GT, 6600, or Quadro FX 4500

I'm looking at buying FCP. Can I buy Final Cut Studio 2 to get FCP or is that only a Upgrade and where would i buy it. How do I go about buying FCP and how much is it
Final Cut Pro v6 is only available as a component within Final Cut Studio 2.
What it is, what is included and how to purchase it is spelled out here:

Wont let me open final cut studio-missing hardware
when i try to open final cut studio a message comes up saying missing hardware 512mb ram, but i have this on my computer.
do i need more ram?
what will make it work?
any help would be greatfully appreciatedWelcome to the forums.
Yes, you need more RAM. FCP needs MINIMUM 512 MB Ram, and your system right now is taking up half of what you have. 1.5GB is the min RAM I recommend for running FCP. 2.5GB to be comfortable...3.5GB to be stylin'.
