Finally upgrading to FCPX - Suggestions?
I currently run FCS 3 on my Macbook Pro 17 (8GB) with Snow Leopard. We use FCP7 to create our television series "Distant Shores" and regularly access our archives of 130 past shows. We also use Sound track Pro, Motion and DVDSP. I have put off upgrading to FCPX but as SL is no longer supported I think now is finally the time.
I would like to upgrade to FCPX and welcome any suggestions about this process. Will I still be able to at least open my archive projects in FCP7?
Thanks All,
Paul

AApologies. Your first line said it. I should have read back.
THat's a big leap. I would do it, but carefully. Make a bootable clone of your current system on an external drive. I think FW800 is the best you can do. Boot off the clone and upgrade it to Yosemite. It will be a lot slower than your system drive, but use it to check out your apps and you workflow. If things work well and you're ok with the system then do a clean erase of your MBP system drive. Install 10.10 and use set up assistant to bring back your users. Clean out the home library of pro apps support and other application prefs and support. Leave Mail and Safari and such. Install the apps from scratch. The system should be quite a bit quicker.
IT might be time to think of a new computer. I know the 17" is great for editing but it's getting a bit long in the tooth. New USB3 and Thunderbolt buses are much quicker.

I suggest three options for upgrading to FCPX
I suggest three options for upgrading to FCPX, the first is to increase the amount of keywords and the second is a mark appears in clips synchronized and the third is to be able to tell the program which clip it should use to name the clips synchronized, for example, have three files, cam 01 and cam 02 audio today when selecting these three files to FCPX names the new file name using synchronized audio but need to edit that new name is created using the name of one of the two cameras. grateful

Upgraded to FCPX 10.1.3 - it loads libraries then crashes
Hello, (first time on this forum)
I upgraded to FCPX 10.1.3 with no issues. Libraries loaded and all was well. I drag and dropped a video on the timeline and FCPX stalled, then crashed. Now, when I attempt to open it up it loads the libraries, sits for a few minutes and then crashes.
I have repaired permissions.
Trashed FCPX preferences.
Ran a maintenance program (Onyx)
I have a Time Machine backup that I accessed and brought 10.1.2 back into my apps folder (so now I have both). When opening 10.1.2 it asks to import my libraries. If I do this will I lose data or will it ruined my libraries. My only backup of the FCPX libraries is an online backup (backblaze) and will take years to restore.
2 Questions:
1. How do I troubleshoot my issue with 10.1.3?
2. Can I downgrade (already on my system) to 10.1.2 and when I import libraries that have been imported to 10.1.3 into 10.1.2 will Iose data?

Actually I thought I had it backing up but realized it wasn't. I haven't lost any data and I haven't attempted to load my libraries in 10.1.2 for fear it would cause problems with it. I am backing up the libraries now and will try once they have backed up.
Cheers.
Assuming you now have only the new empty library in your library pane when you launch. If other libraries are trying to load, again hold down the option key and after a new empty library loads, close it.
Take a look in the Movies folder of your Home folder. There should be a folder called Final Cut Backups. Find the folder that contains timestamped versions of your problem library. Copy the latest version and give it a different name. Double-click that re-named library. FCP should ask you whether you want to update the library; click yes. Hopefully you will have your library back without crashes.
If that doesn't work, and you have a working version of the 10.1.2 app you should be able to use it to open the backup libraries that were not updated.
Good luck.

Finally upgrading to 10.6 from 10.5.8. What do I need to do about drivers for my epson photo printer and nikon slide scanner? May be going all the way to 10.8.
I suggest you determine if compatible drivers are available either in the OS X drivers package or directly from the manufacturer. The following has a link for application compatibility. You can check this, too:
OS X- Printer and scanner software available for download
Upgrading to Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
If you need to purchase Snow Leopard contact Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service. The price is $29.00 plus tax. You will receive physical media - DVD - by mail.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
If you need to purchase Lion contact Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax. It's a download.
Be sure your computer meets the minimum requirements:
Apple - OS X Mountain Lion - Read the technical specifications.
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
Xserve (Early 2009)
Are my applications compatible?

As you can see, I have a Dual 867MHz tower with FCP3. Well, I think I can finally upgrade to the present. I want a Macbook Pro in which I will use FCP (upgraded too)with external HD's. I do personal documentaries mostly, just use cuts and fades and titles. I figure the Macbook Pro 15 at $1799 would be just fine although the $1999 Pro 15 has 500GB vs 320GB.
Since this is all new to me any suggestions as to external configs with HD's as well as the above Macbook choices. I'm perfectly happy with my old tower but have the opportunity to upgrade and besides, that tower is heavy and I want flexibility.
any comments suggestions greatly appreciated.Your internal drive size isn't the pivotal issue.
External connectivity is particularly where you will storage your media.
If you are considering the 17 inch with EC/34 support, buy the i7 15 inch and spend what you can on a iStoragePro Pocketview or Caldigit VR mini FW 800 drive

Firefox has suddenly gone wrong. I was successfully running both Firefox and Internet Explorer 8 on Windows 7. My laptop is new and has plenty of RAM and HDD. I auto-accept upgrades including the most recent Firefox upgrade and the suggested upgrade to Adobe Flash 10.1. But after this, Firefox stopped working and does not work when I re-load Firefox 3.6. Also IE8 now works very slowly and does not locate major websites like Microsoft without a 'can't find the website message' and having to pressing Return a second time. When I do get to the Mozilla website and click on the button to try to download Firefox 3.6.6, I get this message "Oops! Internet Explorer could not find mozilla3.snt.utwente.nl". Can you help with what has gone wrong? As it stands, I can't use Firefox at all. Note: because Firefox did not work after the upgrade, I've downloaded the IE8 version of the Adobe Flash 10.1. What I really want is to be able to use both Firefox and IE8. But is this possible if they use different versions of Adobe Flash?

After upgrading to Ffx 3.6.6, the program asks you to upgrade to Flash Player Plugin 10.1. I download and installed 10.1 only to find videos weren't loading.
In my case, the problem is the previous installation of Flash Player (9.0.47) was somehow messing things up. To fix this, because I already had Flash plugin 10.1 installed I had to uninstall 10.1 using the uninstaller from adobe and then manually remove any files related the old flash player plugin 9.0.47
Here is a run-down of my process:
0. To check if you have a previous installation of the Flash Plugin lurking around, in Firefox go to Tools -> Add-ons -> Plugins (tab). At this point you may seen both Flash plugins.
1. Proceed to uninstall Flash Plugin 10.1. Adobe provides an uninstaller here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html
( you have to make sure you have nothing running when you execute the installer).
2. On my Mac (sorry I don't know what it is in Windows) I searched the hard drive for any files/folders with "Shockwave". I found a folder called "Shockwave 10". It wasn't removed by Adobe's uninstaller. For safety I deleted it and then emptied the trash.
3. I then went to My HD -> Library -> Internet Plugins.
Remove the file and folder named "Flash player.old"
4. Restarted; ran the Adobe Flash Player 10.1 installer. Restarted again.
5. Opened up ffx and double checked the plugins list (see step 1). Version 10.1 is installed and available. Went to problem sites to test it out and Success!
Hope this helps. -
After upgrade to FCPX 10.1, paste attributes no longer works. Has anyone had this issue or have an answer to it?
Are you sure it does not work at all? Could be a problem with a particular project, or clip.
Create a completely new project, add some clips to it, Cmd-C in one clip, and try Paste Atributes into another. Does it not work?
Also, by "does not work" do you mean it is greyed out, or the window appears but nothing happens when you click "Paste"? -
Can't access suggestions in Google toolbar dropdown since upgrading to F4.Suggestions appear but when I click on one nothing happens - it just returns to what I've typed already.
eg If I type the word 'honey' a number of suggestions appear. One is 'honey crackles'. If I click on that I'm back to 'honey' againTry reading the steps at [[Websites look wrong or appear differently than they should]]

I've tried to upgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6.3. I run the full install and my computer restarts to complete the installation, but when it restarts the software has not upgraded. Any suggestions?
Are you booting from the retail disc to do the installation, or running it while booted from Macintosh HD?
It should work either way, but it doesn't always work when booted from Macintosh HD. The system files are supposed to be moved into place during the restart (while the HD is unmounted) making for a long restart time which sometimes causes people to think somethings wrong and abort it. Which is a bad move.
If you're booting from the retail disc it's less obvious what the problem may be; however if you've tried it from booted from the HD and it's failed, then tried booting from the disc, it will fail again because the system components are already on the HD in a disc image waiting to be moved into place.
Whichever way you were tryig, I'd try downloading OmnDiskSweeper (it's free) and using it to see if there's a large package (around 7-10 GB) lurking somewhere that may contain the installer files. If you do, you'll need to trash that before the installer will see a 'clean' system again.
It's also worth asking how much free space you have on your HD - if there's not enough for the installer to use for the temporary package or dmg, it'll fail.
Was there no warning dialogue after the unsuccessful install?

Finally upgrading... safest version of Tiger to run Logic
I'm finally upgrading to Pro 7 from Express 6. Will Logic Pro 7 work under 10.3.9, or am I finally forced to install Tiger?
If so, which is the safest version to update it to?
And are there any vitally necessary tweaks (like disabling spotlight and dashboard, which I might do anyway) to increase system performance and kill nonstop hard drive access (for indexing).
Thanks!
Leslie BellI can't speak for Logic's performance on 10.3.9, but regarding Tiger, which version os OSX is the "safest" is an impossible question to answer; however, people have their preferences about which vers. of OSX to run, and mine are 10.4.3 or 10.4.5. I'm currently on 10.4.5.
Do a search on this forum for "10.4." and look for other posts on this subject. Many people have posted their experiences with various versions of OSX and Logic very on the heels of various Tiger releases.
But there is one incontrovertibly important bit of software that must be installed (and which, surprisingly, doesn't come with LP) and that is ProApps 3.1 (available on the Apple website -- do a search). If this is not installed, expect Logic to behave badly. Very, very badly. -

Finally took the plungs and upgraded to Lion OSx so that I could access icloud. Everything worked ok but I now find it difficult to view the screen. Everything has a grey tinge and with my poor eyesight it's really frustrating. Zooming in is ok but I would really like more contrast. What was wrong with crisp white and deep black? Have tried to change the profiles in System Preferences but it's confusing to follow and after 3 attempts I still don't like any of the profiles. My photos all have an unnatural colour now. How can I improve this and bring everything back to 'normal'? Whose 'bright' (?) idea was it to make everyting grey and why???
Thanks. Very helpful. It's now less of a strain for me. But the fonts are still too pale. I really need to be able to read words that are black. In Mail, the sender and headings are dark enough, but the content is still too light for me to read without straining. Any other suggestions?

WIndows 10 upgrade stops after final upgrade circle at 0% on envy dv6 7245us
The Windows 10 upgrade downloads successfully, goes through various gyrations, then displays the final big upgrade circle at 0% and aborts, then rolls back to Windows 8.1. I have tried all sorts of things from the various forums, including Microsoft's with no luck. Has anyone successfully upgraded the HP Envy dv6 7245us (with AMD A10 processor) model to Windows 10? Or had similar problems? Thanks, noid63
Hello , I understand that you are wondering what the effect of your recovery media will have on your Windows 10 operating system, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter! Since the recovery media you created is designed for Windows 8.1, as well as the Recovery Parition, a new system recovery in the future will the operating system back to Windows 8.1. Once recovered, you will need to re-install Windows 10. As a recommendation, I would suggest holding off on a Windows 10 update since there are no supported drivers available for your system in Windows 10 at present. This should help to avoid any driver conflicts you may encounter upon upgrading. I hope this helps! Best Regards

I have a problem with a snow leopard to mountain lion upgrade. Any suggestions?
I have a late 2007 I-Mac currently running snow leopard. My computer meets the requirements for RAM, available disk space, etc. to upgrade to Mountain Lion. I also have a new Mac Book Pro that I just updated the Mountain Lion software on. I have followed the steps outlined by Apple as follows.
To install OS X Lion or Mountain Lion on another Mac, open the Mac App Store, sign in to your account, and re-download the OS by selecting it in the Purchases list. Follow these steps:
Download Lion or Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store on one of your personal authorized Macs. The download is approximately 4 GB in size.
Install the OS.
Log in to another computer that you wish to install it on.
Open the Mac App Store. Enter your Apple ID and password that was used to download either Lion or Mountain Lion on the first computer.
Click the Purchased icon, then click the download link for the appropriate OS.
The problem I continue to have is that the program will act like it's going to download and will say it's downloading then after approximately 10 minutes the App Store no longer says the program is downloading and I again get the green box to "install app".
I have made sure to update my software and I have the latest updates 10.6.8 for snow leopard. I have also disabled the anti virus program. Any suggestions??If you are willing to experiment:
Unfortunately, the link for getting specific hardware versions has disappeared. So basically:
1. Get yourself a spare hard drive freshly erased or with a freshly erased partition of
around 8 GBs or more.
2. Boot to your Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion from the main menu.
3. From the beginning screen select your spare partition/drive as the target
destination then begin the download.
4. At the end of the download you will observe an Install button for you to click.
Now this is important - as soon as that gadget appears you must abort the
installation process. There are only two reliable ways to do this quickly: (a.) yank
the cable for the drive from the computer; (b.) pull the power on the computer -
shut it down quickly.
This will result in your finding a folder on the drive that contains InstallESD.dmg that you can now use to create a bootable USB flash drive installer based on the special build for your model. Use it until the next public release of Lion appears or you move on to Mountain Lion.
If you do not stop the download process immediately upon its completion you will end up with an installer that always boots to a non-functioning installation progress window instead of the normal main menu.
Make Your Own Mountain/Lion Installer
1. After downloading Mountain/Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Mountain/
Lion application. After Mountain/Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button.
Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Mountain/Lion installer. Move
the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You
must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes
installing.
2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
a. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
b. After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left
side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
c. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until
the process has completed.
d. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side
list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
e. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the
button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
f. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash
drive size.
3. Locate the saved Mountain/Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the content of the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
a. Double-click on the InstallESD.dmg file to mount it on your Desktop.
b. Open Disk Utility.
c. Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
d. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
e. Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
f. Drag the mounted disc icon from the Desktop into the Source entry field.
g. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable installer that you can use without having to re-download Mountain/Lion.
Note: The term Mountain/Lion used above means Lion or Mountain Lion.
As an alternative to the above you can try using Lion DiskMaker 2.0 that automates the process. -
