Finder: annoying repositioning

Hi all,
Already a problem in Mountain Lion and unfortunately still there in Mavericks: Finder will reposition itself somewhere near the end of the file/folder list after expanding or collapsing a folder. This is especially the case when sorting sequence is "Date Modified". So, if e.g. I have a folder contining say 10 subfolders and the sorting sequence is "date modified", when I expand a folder with many files in it, Finder wil jump somewhere near the end of the folder list. Now, the idea of expanding a folder usually is, that you want to look inside that folder. Repositioning to a point way past that expanded folder therefore is a major headache. You need to manually reposition Finder. Of course changing the sequence to "name" could "solve" this, but I usually sort my folder in date modified sequence to have the latest files on top.
Does anybody know a way to prevent Finder from repositioning ?

Hi dinky2,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If Finder isn't behaving correctly, there are a few steps that can help isolate or resolve the issue.
First, try booting your computer into safe mode:
Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564
Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
If Finder is working normally in safe mode, this usually means OS X is fine, and the issue is caused by conflicting software in your user account.
Next, see if Finder behaves normally in a new user account. The steps in this article also apply to creating a new user in Mavericks:
OS X Mountain Lion: Create a new user account

All the best,
Jeremy

    Hi,
You can create Repository Static Variable in rpd, and in Connection pool you can mention like VALUEOF(OLAP_DSN) and VALUEOF(OLAP_USER) in DSN and user name. Then create a report and change the function to use these variable.

  • OS10.4.10 Finder Annoying!

OS10.4.10 Finder keeps popping up in "foreground" and every app goes to background, even now as I'm typing this message. Every few seconds the Finder comes up, and I have to click in the window where I want to continue working. Any ideas? I never meant to upgrade to 10.4.10, but when burning a CD in iTunes yesterday the iTunes upgrade kept bugging me about upgrading. Then, it got caught in a vicious loop of quitting iTunes to upgrade, trying to upgrade, ejecting the now dead CD in the midst of burning it.....help! Now I hate iTunes, just when I was starting to have fun with it.

Yes, iTunes warned me about the burn not working, and as it turned out it did not work. I didn't realize the update was for all of OSX, or I wouldn't have gone through with it especially not knowing much about this latest update. As I said, everything was hung up between quitting iTunes, trying to stop the burn and eject the CD, and going through with the update. This is so frustrating, because as I am typing this or anything else, my cursor stops and is "stuck on stupid." I restarted my Mac amidst it all late last night, (the Cabernet did not help); and this morning realized that OSX was no longer 10.3.9.

  • What's annoying about Events, Keyword Collections & Move to trash

Today I was given a project to edit where the Event was already created, the media was optimized, keywords added and keyword collections created to split the media into folders. All I had to do was to sync the 2x cam's to separately recorded audio, and begin grabbing sound bites.
    Nothing unusual so far....
To start my syncing, I began by finding all the clips from CAM-A and added the keyword SYNC 1 (CAM-A). I also added the separately recorded audio file within this keyword collection. Clicking on the SYNC 1 (CAM-A) keyword collection icon, I highlighted all the clips, right-clicked and chose Syncronize Clips.
This is what I find annoying: When I choose Syncronize Clips, The synchronized compound clip doesn't automatically appear in my SYNC 1 (CAM-A) keyword collection folder, instead I need to click on the event and add the keyword for it to appeare in that keyword collection. Wouldn't one think that if I chose to create a Syncronized Clip in that keyword collection that FCPX knows thats where I want it to appear...!
Anyway so in this particular case not all the clips synced, so what I then did was chose the un-synced clip + the audio clip and synced them alone. As i synced these clip separatley, what I was doing was moving the already synced clip to the trash, totally forgetting that these were also being deleted from my main event folder. Boy was I "P***'S'd"
Again what I found annoying: if you move a clip to the trash in a keyword collection, you actually delete that from the event too. Persionally I'd like to see an option so that you can righ-click and delete a keyword rather than having to twirl down the triangle,  double clicking the keywords to activate the keyword editor, which you then have to select the keyword and hit delete to remove it out of that keyword collection.
If for arguments sake a clip wouldn't sync, what I then did was find a small snippet of the same audio. I would make a range selection and add a keyword to both the clip and the audio file.
What I also found annoying: when you open the Syncronized Compound Clip, your unable to stretch the clip to the left, instead I needed to use my "P" tool to move the clip to the right, which then gave me room to streatch the clip to the left.
Sorry I just had to get that out of my system....

Absolutely Andy.... I won't go into what does and doesn't drive me mad, but your absolutely right, at times I have a smile from ear to ear, and other times I'm left scratching my head and spending valuable time trying to work out a workaround or workflow.

True... I spent a day with a colleague editing side by side. He has a 17" MacBook Pro Quad 2.3Ghz with 4GB RAM, and I run on a 17" MacBook Pro Quad 2.3Ghz with 8GB RAM. You wouldn't believe the difference an extra 4GB's of RAM can make, I can only imagine how your system will run on 16GB

You can right-click a clip to remove keywords, but the only option as present it to remove all keywords at once (Cntr+0). Cmd+K to remove one keyword when you have multiple keywords seems pretty dang easy to me.  If you had more than one Keyword, what would the option in a menu be?  It could make for a very long menu, it'd have to be a dynamic menu, it'd get too convoluted.  So, Contrl+0 or Cmd+K seems pretty easy and efficient to me.
Ben it was only a suggestion…! Anyway It's probably best we rest this here, it's clear we have different opinions on this one

As for workflow, no, FCP X is a totally different workflow than any other NLE, period.  You can't compare.  I've been training editors for years who have lots of experience, are from cable networks, and they still walk away faster, more efficient editors.  Thus, I have to say, how long you've been editing, and how many different systems you've use, really doesn't have any bearig when learning something, especially as radicallly different as FCP X.
    Who's comparing?
The only reason I mentioned what software I've edited on in the past, was so you can see my ability to adapt. FCP X isn't that different! you still work with media, you still need to manage, organise  or name your bins, or in FCPX's terms keyword collections. The list could go on....

  • Safari auto typing is annoying

    I have Safari 5.0.
It seems that when I begin to type something in the search window it automatically starts to display some of the previous addresses, which I find annoying.
I looked into the preferences but don't see any options of turning this off.
Is it hopeless, or am I looking in the wrong place.
    Your help is appreciated.
    Thanks

    HI Frank,
The url's you see when you start typing a web page address are collected from your History and Bookmarks. One way to avoid that is to turn on Private Browsing from the Safari Menu Bar, Safari/Private Browsing. In private browsing, Safari won't remember the pages you visit, your search history, or your autofill information.
As so many Safari users are complaining about this problem, please provide feedback here. Thank you!

  • HP Envy 15t k000 Battery Issues

I recenty got an HP Envy 15t k000 from HP home store. Customized to "4-cell 48WHr Lithium-ion Battery,"  I have been wondering if I upgraded from 41WHr to 48WHr I should be getting more battery life?
Can someone tell me how much is the difference in battery life? The upgrade to 48WHr was $10 more.
When I inserted the battery, it wasn't rigid in the place. It moves a little which I find annoying. (I guess its normal but if there ever is a new battery compatible for the model, the design fix would be appreciated).
Also, the battery's model is VI04 and I found it here on Hp website batteries page. So if 48WHr is VI04, which one is for 41WHr? Because VI04 is the only one campatible with HP Envy 15t k000.
Is there any extended battery (the big battery) for the mentioned model? Will there ever be one? It will be great if there is any extended battery for this model.

based on the specs, a 48 WHr battery will provide about 17% more energy than a 41Whr battery.  So if you currently get 90-minutes from a charge, the upgrade will provde an additional 15-min and stretch it to 105 under similar usage conditions.
Just multiple your current cycle by 0.17 to see how much time you would gain.

  • Some advice - buying a MacBook Air

    Hi,
I am planning to buy a MacBook Air (13" version), and have some questions which I would like some help!
    1. Performance/Upgrades
I am trying to figure out whether I should get the Processor (i5 to i7) and/or RAM (4GB to 8GB) upgrades - is it worth it, for me?
My day to day usage is quite regular - Outlook, spreadsheets, writing, browsing, streaming online videos, a few flash games here and there. But, I do multi-task heavily, in that I can have large numbers of files/programs/browsing tabs all open at the same time, flicking between them to get things done quicker.  On a few odd occasions, I do use more intensive programs such as photo editing, web design, video editing etc.
From the research I have done I believe that a faster processor would only really benefit me in some of the more intensive tasks such as a video conversion. Now I know a professional video editor would the quickest conversions if they are doing it all the time, but for me, because this sort of task is quite infrequent, I can handle it taking an extra 10 minutes to convert something. What I couldn't deal with is for these applications to be slow and draggy in their overall usage.
For the RAM, I guess this would be a lot more useful for me, in terms of the multi-tasking applications and files? My existing laptop (albiet old and cluttered) is a Windows 7 with Core i5 dual core and 4GB ram. I have sometimes found when opening significant numbers of tabs, it tells me I am out of memory, or the application windows will start failing to load/turning black screen etc). Things take a long time to open. This sort of thing, I find annoying!
If I get either upgrade it means spending £1050-£1150 on the Apple Store. If I don't need the upgrades, I can get hold of the standard MBA for just £850 from Tesco, and that's quite a saving that I would appreciate at the moment... but only if it doesnt result in a lower performance that I would notice.
So this is the first question - what sort of day to day tasks would a faster processor and/or extra RAM benefit, and would I likely notice this? What about for the heavier applications? Do you think from my comments above that I should bother with either?
    2. Using Windows apps
I've seen that you can run Windows programs on a Mac through Boot Camp or other software like Parallels. This would be really useful for me as I do have the odd program which is Windows-only and I would still need to use. However I have also been reading that doing this would significantly reduce performance/battery life on the Mac.
Does this mean that the Mac would have reduced performance/battery ALL of the time - even when Windows isn't being used, or does it just mean for the duration of time that you're actually logged into the Windows OS?
I can deal with slow performance whilst using Windows applications, as I don't intend on using the MBA as a full time Windows machine - but I would not want my battery/performance to suffer for the rest of the time when I am just running Mac stuff.
Any thoughts or experiences with this? And any tips on the best and most cheapest/efficient way to run Windows programs on a Mac?
    3. Other crucial tips on switching?
I have used Windows for 15-20 years and never had a mac, but with the new Windows 8 being completely rubbish especially without touch screen, I think now is a good time to make the change and give Mac a try.
I've given the topic a good bit of research and have an idea of what will be different between a PC and Mac, but if you have gone through "the switch" yourself and think you have any particularly good tips from personal experience - such as things I might find difficult in getting used to or things I will have to sacrifice, or things a Mac won't do that I could have done in Windows etc - then let me know so I dont get any nasty suprises
I realise this is a lot of questions and info but having read lots of reviews and articles I'd like to just get some Apple user feedback - straight from the horses mouth - as this is kind of a big step for me to make this change and I dont want to spend all that money and regret it!
    Thanks so much!
    Danielle

    Hi,
    Thanks for your reply.
    >>Running bootcamped Win7, yes power consumption is more, a lot more,....indications are no.
Sorry, can you clarify on this one - do you mean the power consumption is more DURING the use of Windows, or ALL of the time (even when using the Mac as normal with OSX).... also what did you mean by indications?
    >>From the parameters of what you say your use would be, Id recommend the I5 with 8gig of ram. the 12 hour >>batt. life is only rated for the 13" on the I5, ....not the I7.
Sounds like my first guess was about right - and good point about the battery life - as that is something that's quite important to me!
    >>The "switch" is extremely easy. Ive seen grandmothers switch to a MAC and have its 'everyday use' >>conquered in under a week. So, you should have no worries, its extremely user friendly, no worries of virus, >>etc.
Glad to hear I've done more research and already seen a few features I can see myself preferring a lot more to the Windows system!
    >>As a former computer repairman, Ive owned nearly 200 diff. laptops (many were free, or Franken-computers >>built from parts) and I can honestly say the Macbook AIR is the finest piece of beloved hardware Ive ever >>owned by a mile.
    >>Many people incorrectly see the THIN nature of the Air and incorrectly conjecture its "less than" a full laptop, >>but the contrary is the case.
Nah, I don't associate size with performance - especially these days, everything is getting smaller. My concerns are really just about whether to upgrade for extra performance, and using the OS - once I have those nailed I am pretty cofident the hardware will perform well.
    >>Additionally the AIR is the only Mac that has 802AC wifi, new Haswell cool-running processor, and extremely >>long 12 Hr. batt life on the I5 13" configuration.
Yeah that battery life is one of the big sellers
    Cheers for the tips,
    Danielle

I am enhancing a vb.net app that was originally written with vs2010 vb.net, crystal reports 10 and telerik.
It has been running for a year.
I have made enhancements using vs2010sp1 vb.net,  cr 13,  telerik framework updated.
The server is a 2003 server.
The reports are  loaded into the app using vb code.
My version creates a message the filename is empty on initial loading of the report
which the users will find annoying as they have to enter the report request.
This message has to be internal because I not coded for this message
I don't get this message when testing at my workstation.  It happens when I load the
    app to the server.
    Any ideas or solutions appreciated.

    Hi,
"The report filename was empty." is not a Crystal Reports error.
Specify what the application exactly does i.e. view report, print, export report etc.
Take a look at below thread.
[Preview in web using Crystal Report Viewer Message:|Preview in web using Crystal Report Viewer Message:]
Recheck the flow of the application if everything is in place.
Refer to the developer guide :[http://help.sap.com/businessobject/product_guides/sapCRVS2010/en/crnet_dg_2010_en.zip|http://help.sap.com/businessobject/product_guides/sapCRVS2010/en/crnet_dg_2010_en.zip]
Apply [SP2 on CR for VS 2010|http://downloads.businessobjects.com/akdlm/cr4vs2010/CRforVS_13_0_2.exe]
Just as a test try a sample application without the telerik framework, see if it reproduces the issue.

  • Partitioning travels (and Happy Birthday to me!)

Next to my avatar, I note that I signed up here 5 years ago today. Not as long as I've been sober,    but still a milestone. I'm quite sure my first Arch install was 0.4...'Voodoo'? The first Linux distro I touched that showed promise of one day "being ready for prime time" - I'm glad I waited for it!
So, this is a 'slightly' off-topic post (but still quite 'on-topic'), and if the powers that be choose to move it; so be it. No skin off my back. This is (IICC) my 89th post in 5 years. Over the years I've made a couple of gaffes, and found more than a couple of bugs (my 'weird' partitioning schemes, outlined below, may test parts of software that most people don't, I don't know).
But overall, I'm pretty quiet. I sometimes wait longer than I should for bugs I find annoying to be fixed, but they almost always are, without my involvement, and often as quickly as I could get a "round tuit" filling out a bug report! My own experience has been that unless I think I've found something substantial, early (which I've sortof done twice in the past two days), I don't report it. And if I do, I report it here. It usually shows up in days, if not hours, anyway. Just my experience.
Anyway, I started checking out a (small number of) distros a few months back, plus I've been piddling with Arch x86_64 installs, so I've been dual-booting (between 32- and 64-bit Arch) even when I only have Arch on the machine! But I've had as many as 5 (Arch 32- and 64-bit, DistroU 32- and 64-bit, and DistroD WTF remembers how many bits it was now).
For a good while (several years, in some form), I've had a partitioning scheme which I've never seen replicated in any tutorials on the subject, but which I find quite flexible and useful.
I have several "non-mainstream" methods for handling multi-booting. Feel free to pick and choose anyhing you find useful, free as in beer and free (of) as in warranty, of course.
swap belongs on the fastest part of the drive; usually if not always the very beginning (outside) of the drive - IF you only have one installation. In this case, making a 1 GB swap, a  /  of your choice, size-wise, followed by (if you choose) a /home partition that takes the rest of the drive, saving a chunk at the end (40-80 MB) for /boot.
    To do this, when partitioning a new drive, 1st create a 1-2 GB primary ('xdy1'; x='s' or 'h', y='a-z'), for swap. Next, create a 2nd *primary* right behind, physically, xdy1 ('sda1'), xdy2, for  /  . Whatever you need, size-wize, 4-60 GB, I guess...
NOW, depending on with *fdisk/gparted/whatever you're using, ether create your extended partition (if using an fdisk variant that will let you leave some space at the end); leave 40-80 MB free. Otherwise, create the extended partition first, and leave the last 40-80 MB unused. You should then be able (very likely after a reboot) to re-run *fdisk and create the final primary partition out of that chunk at the end. Your extended partition would've taken xdy3, so the chunk at the end is xdy4 - a *primary* partition.
You can use this puppy for /boot; /boot BELONGS on the slowest part of the drive. It's very rarely accessed after sysinit. This setup offers 2 advantages: while no BIOS capable of running a 686-optimized Linux system limits you to the first 1024 'cylinders' (sic), some DO require the /boot partition to be on a primary partition. This IS a primary partition. Furthermore, if permanently placed at the end of the drive as a logical partition, every time you added or re-arranged your partitions, it's partition number would most likely change (the partition ID of your BOOT drive - yeah, yeah, I know, UUID's...). With it stuck like glue to 'sda4', it ain't going anywhere, regardless of how (or how many!    ) times you reorganize the extended partition (which is where.I tend to do most of my 'playing').
You can then use the entire extended partition for /home, if you wish, or carve it up however you like. More on this below.
When multi-booting, I've found ("developed"???) a sightly more sophisticated set of arrangements that seem to work well together (WHY RedHat didn't think of this in 1996 - it would be a de facto standard today! - I have NO idea...)
Normally, distros want to install a vmlinuz26, and and a kernel26.img  (and maybe a fallback image, and a config26.gz, and a System.map file), into /boot/. A lot of my older (and some of my newer) machines required bootable partitions to be on a *primary* partition. Install 5 distros like *that*.
    Actually, it's QUITE easy:
Note: I have a larger-than-normal (for ME) /boot partition (96 MB - and 64 would likely be adequate for 3 distros), but the reason is obvious, and IMX most people have /boot WAY too big, anyway. Right now I have 2 distros loaded (Arch 32- and 64-bit), current and former kernels are both retained for each distro - ie, 4 complete sets of kernels. My 96 MB partition is 32% full.
For our multi-boot environment,  xdy1 ('sda1') is actually a large (60 GB or so) LVM volume. 'sda2' becomes the extended volume, and 'sda3' is the 40-80 GB /boot volume at the end of the drive. We have the entire extended partition to use *outside* LVM. I generally use a VERY large 'chunk' size in LVM (like 256 MB!), and try to set it up, roughly, as such (on a 250 GB = 236 GB drive):
    sda1 P LVM 64 GB
    sda2 E extended ?
    sda5 L logical ?
    sda4 P /ext2+++ 64 MB
+++ there is ZERO reason to make a /boot partition ext3 and incur the substantial overhead of a 32 MB journal on a 60-100 MB filesytem! The system runs BEAUTIFULLY with boot mounted ro - that's my normal MO, in fact. I can always remount it rw on the rare occasions I need to update something.
Rather than using dev-mapper's long naming conventions, I create a Volume Group called vg, and Logical volumes called, say, ar and ah and such:
    ah 4 GB # arch32 /home
    ar 8 GB # arch32 / (root)
sw 1 GB # swap (shared)
sd 3 GB # data partition shared between all O/S's on the machine (if desired...).
    br 8 GB # arch64 / (root)
    bh 4 GB # arch64 /home
You can add more lv's to install additional O/S'es.
You are NOT forced, in either fstab, GRUB, OR LILO, into using the 40-character-long "dev/dev-mapper/vg01/dm-01" syntax; from above, "dev/vg/at" works great, and reasonably resembles your other partition ID's.
Note that no matter HOW many O/S'es we install, we only use ONE /boot partition! I might have to go to a 128 MB or 256 MB partition.
While I normally have fstab mount /boot ro, it's easy, of course, to remount it rw on the fly. Since all distros SHARE the same /boot (normally only mounted ro by all concerned), if one distro borks it's grub entries or installs a REALLY crappy kernel, it's quite easy to get to the file in question from another O/S!
I first installed Arch i686 on this machine (AMD64 XP3500+). I then created a directory at /boot/arch32. I copied (*copied*, NOT moved) all the loose files from the /boot directory (vm*, kern*, Sys* in arch's case) into the /boot/arch32 directory. I then update /boot/grub/menu.lst, replicating all it's primary entries as new options to select, with '/boot/vmlinuz26' becoming '/boot/arch32/linuz26', etc. These come BEFORE the original selections. I leave the loose files in /boot alone; they aren't hurting anything, and, who knows...
Reboot choosing the 'normal' option (not 'safe'). If the system boots correctly, I leave the 'fall-back' option from the original Arch install as the LAST entry in grub (it's literally the 'last shot', anyway...). Theoretically, it should pick up these 'loose' files, were it to come to that.
Now, whenever Arch updates the kernel, it (wisely) doesn't do a bunch of checking in /boot/grub/menu.lst or check what files are in /boot; it simply recompiles a full set of files and slaps them into /boot. All I have to do when there is the occasional kernel update is:
    cd /boot
    rm -rf arch32old
    mv arch32 arch32old
    mkdir arch32
    cp vm* kern* Sys* arch32/
All is ready to go. The next boot will RUN the kernel from the /boot/arch32 directory.
That's pretty quick-n-easy considering Kernel updates don't NORMALLY (cough cough) come out that often.
One could even create GRUB entries for the arch32old (and arch64 old) kernels! (easily, basically cut-n-paste w/minor replacements/substitutions). You could have a GRUB menu that takes the entire screen!
We can now install Arch x86_64, and any other distros that recognize LVM2 and play nice with other distros.
One last thing I do: in the extended partition (preferably near the end of the drive) I set up 8 GB partitions as ext2, -b4096, -m0, -N16384 (-N65536?). I use these for the /var/cache/pacman in Arch, but other distros have similar (it not as ready for prime time!) arrangements and needs; the routine seems to wear well; I've had at least some of my now-system disk (250 GB) working like this for a good 3 years (including some REALLY substantial, solo, all-night Linux install parties!    ). My current x86_64 install, which is what I'm using now, is a fresh install, but it's not really any faster than a month's-old Arch32 install on the same computer.
Sorry for the tome. It's my birthday and I'll write if I want to...
Yes, I know this post is timestamped the day after, but I assure you I started this before midnight!
I have no intention of "graduating from" Arch i686. I fully intend to keep both on my system (at a MINIMUM) - if one install gets borked, you can get to it fairly easily from another install on the same machine (of something DIFFERENT - I make sure to update a new kernel to one system for a week before updating the other.
A single /boot partition for a dozen distros, with a relatively easy (straight-forward, at least) and painless method for handling kernel updates from multiple distros on one machine....shared swapspace...shared storage...
On the rare chance that someone (a) is still reading, and (b) feels this is a rational start of a Wiki page, I'm willing to maintain...

    Thanks to you both.
As to the 1024 cylinder limit, again, I think there are very few remaining out there in operation (*I'll* never have one, LOL) with the 1024-cylinder problem, but I HAVE had a few problems with relatively recent (in 'my' terms, which means ancient) hardware where Linux doesn't want to boot using a *logical* partition for /boot - hence the homegrown workaround to get /boot at the end of the disk. You're 100% right - today, it's not worth the time or hassle of doing so. I simply thought like this since BEFORE the days of 20 MB HD's!  .
Thanks again. Five years using Linux doesn't seem *nearly* as long as five years running Windows (although it DOES seem like a good 5 years since I've used Windows voluntarily). And, of course, these ARE faster machines...

  • Multi-day events only showing up on first day of event in year view

There are several things about iCal that I find annoying (makes me miss my old Palm PDA sometimes), such as being able to set my own default meeting times, meetings being defaulted to all-day, no way to connect a contact to the event without having to invite them to join (my old Palm did this and it was a very useful tool). Each of these has many discussions already on these topics with a solution (except adding a contact to an event), such as simply typing in the meeting time when you setup the event.
However, I can't find a discussion on the following question, and therefore no solution. Hope someone out there knows the answer:
Why do Multi-day events only show up on the first day of the event in year view, and is there a way to change it?
    Thanks in advance!

    Greetings,
Perhaps I'm not setting up my events as you are but I see a color for each day of my multi-day event.
    My steps:
    1. Add a multi-day event to iCal:
    2. Switch to Year view and observe the matching date range (26th - 29th):
    Suggestions:
Make sure you have all your updates installed (Apple > Software Update).
Toggle the "all day" check box for the events in question and see if that makes the events show up in Year view.
If that doesn't help, please provide a screen shot of the edit window of the event in question so we can see how you have it configured:
    Cheers!

  • Grouping objects in Pages 5.1

I apologize is there is another thread for this question but I searched as best I could and couldn't find one.
I have recently upgraded to Pages 5.1 (not because I had any desire to, but simply to stop the annoying pop-ups telling me to update it). I was reasonably happy with the older version, which handled most of my document needs.
The 5.1 version has many changes that I find annoying (such as the evident inability to convert text into tables and vice versa), but I thiink I have found work-arounds for all the problems except one. (My prreferred solution would be to go back to the old program but that seems not possible.)
I cannot get simple objects to "group." I only use "shapes" provided from insert and text boxes. I do not need to know how to group graphics created outside of pages (although it would be nice). But two simple "shapes" that Pages itself provides, when I click on them both and go to the "Arrange" pull down, the "group" function is not on (as it would have been in the old program) and I can't group the objects.
I realize this may not be the most pressing issue with this new program, but it is cusing me a great deal more work. I used the feature to create fractions in algebraic equations and I could copy and paste a grouped fraction and change the variables, exponents, numbers, etc., quite easily. Now I have to create each fraction from scratch, because the parts don't easily stick together when I copy and try to move one.
Thanks for any help you might offer.

    Thank you, Peter.
I had some trepidation bothering you all with my trivial question, but I end up having more information that I ever expected. I really thought I would either be plagued by a dysfunctional WP or suffer endless harassment about updates. Ironically, when I went back to retreive the old Pages at Viking's suggestion, the first thing it asked me is if I wanted an update.

  • Adobe Acrobat X Pro writing text not smooth.

I use tablet pc for education in university and I try Adobe Acrobat X Pro writing text it not smooth text can you have add-in pen input support or support pen writing (smooth)for tablet pc?

If you want to annotate the PDF directly on a tablet, use PDF Annotator. The annotation capabilities of Acrobat are poor. You also have to select the erase tool to erase, rather than just turn the pen over. PDF Annotator works the way you would expect annotation to work with a pen. It is also useful if you grade PDFs on the tablet. The only thing I find annoying with Annotator is that the paging is a bit clunky. You should be able to find an educational price for the package, or possibly your school has it under license. There is a 30-day trial if you would like to try it. Most folks here would not dream of annotating with Acrobat for the same reasons you have found.

  • What changes do we want in 12 months for the new versions of iPhone6/6 Plus

    Hi All,
I've had my iPhone 6 Plus for about 10 days and I love it .
There are 3 things that I find annoying though.
[1] I do not like the position of the on/off switch. It should be put back on the top like it was in previous models. If people can cope with it on the top of an iPad then surely they can cope with it on the iPhone.
[2] I have found that in the way I hold the phone (I am a 2 handed user) I tend to lower the volume by inadvertently pressing the volume buttons. I have got into the habit of making sure that the volume is at the level I want it each time I switch the phone on. Apple needs to put the volume buttons somewhere else. Where? Well there is plenty of room on the top. The on/off switch on in the normal place and the volume switches on the opposite side.
[3] I have always hated the audio jack being on the bottom of the last couple of models. It wasn't the case with the earlier models. I think the audio jack could go on the top as well. I have solved the problem for myself by using Bluetooth In Ear headphones. Works for me.
If all of the above is technically possible they are the only changes i'd like to see in 12 months time.
    Cheers all

  • How does one completely remove the Contribute add-in from Excel?

This problem is driving me "buggy":
Contribute CS5 installed its add-in toolbar in Excel (2010) on my Win7 (b4-bit) machine. I don't need or want it. Since it was listed as a COM add-in, I "removed" it using File>Options>Add-Ins>Manage COM Add-ins. It was removed from the list of installed add-ins (confirmed by a restart, i.e., no item, no check box), but it was not removed from Excel's Add-Ins list.
I did some searching and found several fora in which it was suggested that renaming the files OfficePlugin.dll and OfficePluginRes.dll would solve the issue. I did, it did not.
More searches yielded a suggestion to deinstall Contribute, which I did. That did not work either. Now I have neither Contribute nor its Excel toolbar components installed, yet its "carcass" remains "perched" on Excel's Add-Ins list like a dead parrot pining for the fjords...
I searched this and other Adobe fora before posting this message, but I was unable to locate this exact issue.
Has anyone encountered this and solved the issue?
    Thanks in advance!

ADOBE SUCKS! - Why can't they make it simple for users to uninstall a plug-in that most users don't want or need, and simply find annoying.  This is a complete nuisance.  Does anyone at Adobe even care????  I'm fed up and pissed off and wish someone in their company would fix it.
    - pissed off.

  • Why is Indesign slow on OSX?

Ok so it isn't really slow but it sure feels like that coming from XP. I find the hand tool sluggish in Indesign and Illustrator on super fast macs which is disappointing. Why is this Adobe? And does snow leopard improve things a bit?

I noticed it on all kinds of macs and only with Adobe software. G5 quad core, Imac dual cores, macbook all running OSX tiger or leopard. Fast computers with modern hardware so I am pretty sure it's not a hardware issue. Its not that I find Illustrator or Indesign to be terribly slow but with complex documents screen redraw using the hand tool (and I use that all the time) AI or ID in OSX stutters a lot more than in XP which I find annoying when I'm working.
I actually started a thread about it on another forum and got some interesting somewhat surprising replies but not really one definite answer which probably only a Adobe programmer can provide. Sorry if I offended anyone by implying everyone here works for Adobe! ; )
    Here's the thread.

I found Shamyl Zakariya's answer very interesting.
