Finder folders stay open in list view

I am having a problem with the Finder. When looking at folders in list view, certain folders stay open every time I look at a certain directory. If I close the folders and re-open the surrounding folder, the triangles are back down again! These are folders I had open a week ago and I don't need them open any more. It is very frustrating to open a folder, and have five open folders within it that I don't need open! I have to close them several times a day!
How do I make it so that my Finder rembers that those should be closed? I am not sharing files or folders with any other computer or user.
I had this problem on my laptop and I thought that maybe my external HD had some indexing issues. But now it is happening on my brand new imac with folders in the hard drive.

Maybe some of the invisible .DS_Store files in your folders are corrupt.
Launch your Terminal and paste the blue code below into it.
Press Return and type in your password - press Return again and wait for the word 'done.' to appear.
Then quit the Terminal.
sudo find / -name \.DS_Store -exec rm -fP {} \;;echo done.
Next, relaunch the Finder - press Command Option - click and hold down the Finder in your Dock and select Relaunch.
Good luck,
Tom

  • How to make folders stay collapsed in list view in finder?

could someone please tell me if there is a way to make folders stay collapsed next time you open that particular folder (like they used to in tiger)
let me explain this in more detail
back in tiger, when you were in list mode, when you press right arrow on a folder it was expanding its contents, but the next time you open that folder those folders were collapsed, whereas in leopard it remembers the folders you expanded and they stay expanded forever (or until you collapse them all again manually)
i think its a lot more logical for them to stay collapsed next time you're opening that folder because if you have a lot of subfolders and they're all expanded when you open the folder next time its huge, the side scroller bar is tiny and its very difficult to find your stuff
if someone has a solution for this it would be greatly appreciated
    thank you very much

    thanks for your reply
actually CMD+A & CMD+left arrow only collapses the folders of the folder youre in, and not all the levels of subfolders that youve opened
if i could do CMD+A & CMD+left arrow to collapse all the levels of expanded subfolders that would be fine but imagine how much time it would take to locate everything that youve expanded and collapse it manually if you have about 10 levels of subfolders?
i find this incredibly frustrating, has anyone else got any suggestions?

  • Share to open in List View on Client

Currently I'm running Snow Leopard Server 10.6.8.  Clients home folders are stored on an external drive and they also connect to a shared volume.
When the open the shared volume it opens in list view everytime.  How do I get the volume to mount in list view?

Hi Meherally. Thanks for the tip, but my problem isn't related to the process for setting default viewing options. Perhaps some clarification will help.
"Next, select 'view options' from 'view' menu. As you say, the window will have "always show in icon view" but note if the box next to is checked or unchecked. If checked, uncheck it."
This box is always unchecked. The problem is that when I change views in the finder window (from icon, to list or coverflow, or whatever, the "view options"menu always says "always open in icon view". It does not change according to whatever view I am using. this only happens in iDisk. All other folders and disks open just the way I have set them.
In my office I have an iMac G5 running Leopard that works perfectly (in other words, I can set my iDisk view default to always open in whatever view I please), but my new MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard appears to have a bug that prevents this option with iDisk only. The checkbox always says "Always open in icon view" no matter what view I switch to in the finder window. As mentioned above, the iDisk is the only problem. It always opens in icon view and the checkbox does not change with the current window view. All other folders and disks on the MacBook open jsut the way I want. But I'm getting irritated with iDiks always opening in icon view.
    Thanks!

  • IDisk - how to always open in LIST VIEW?

I can't seem to find a way to always open in list view for my iDisk folder, the only option is to always open in icon view. Should I be looking somewhere other than view options?

  • HT5772 How do I delete podcast episodes that I don't want to keep without having them stay in my List view in iTunes and clog it up?  I have some episodes that I've listened to that I want to keep, but others I want to delete.

Using iTunes on my MacBookPro, I find that when I want to delete selected podcast eisodes, they still stay in my List view with the cloud symbol next to them. I don't want them in my List view. I want them gone. I don't want to download them ever again. I do keep some episodes so I don't want to do the draconian thing and delete all podcast episodes once I've heard them. The other problem I have with trying to delete episodes is that some podcasts then have the same episodes pop back up as though I haven't listened to them. I've deleted a bunch of Science Friday episodes only to have them download again ready to hear. Not only that, but some episodes will finish playing or stop playing in the middle of an episode and a random podcast will start playing. Think! does that. GAH!!
Does anyone know a workaround? The same nonsense happens in any iTunes view I try.

You can delete photos from individual albums but not from the camera roll.  If you try to delete a photo from camera roll it will be deleted from all other albums ("locations") that contain the photo.  This is because the actual photo is in the camera roll (the albums only contain links to the photo in camera roll, not the actual photo).

  • I can't get "Always open in list view" to stick.

No matter how many times I click "Always open in list view" for the folder, it continues to open up in icon view. Help please.
I used to think that I had this problem because I was working mainly off an external drive. But, this folder is on my internal drive. Only thing that I think might affect it is that I am using Dropbox and this is one of the folders that is synced using that service.

Is there a Dock Icon that was created for your Printer? If so, open it and look at the list to be printed and delete the extras.
If not, you did not get that far, so no 15 copies for you!

  • Burning a CD so it opens in "List View"

I would like to know if it is possible to burn a CD so that when it is inserted into someone’s computer it will open in “List View” instead of “Icon View”. The CD will only contain folders with PDFs in them.
    Thanks

  • Mac OS X v10.5: Does the Finder always stay open?

First off: sorry again for all the n00b questions.
Next: So does the finder always stay "open"? Like with the blue dot below it. I already asked about the others and I realized I have to click command+Q but for the finder... it just stays "open"
Oh and Is there a way to search on this forum? I know on the forum for my car ('97 Acura CL if anyones curious) there is a search function that all the n00bs are told to do before starting a new thread...

You can quit the Finder but the option is hidden by default in OS X. As the Finder is the way that you interact with OS X its default is to restart automatically if it's quit. For example if it locked up (never happened to me though) and you used Force Quit (alt - command - esc) it would restart automatically. Using a third party application like TinkerTool (which simply opens up more of OS X'x capabilities) you can quit the Finder for specific purposes.
    cheers

  • Finder hangs when sorting in list view on external USB3 portable Seagate

This seems to be a specific Mavericks Finder issue as I have a Mountain Lion backup that does not have this problem. Finder hangs on the Seagate when selecting the Music folder that holds all of my music files (over 300 GB) organized by iTunes in artist and album folders.
I keep two backups, one on an external 1 TB portable USB 3 Seagate drive (5400rpm) and one on an external 2 TB portable USB 3 Toshiba (5400rpm) drive. Sorting thru the iTunes Media/Music folder in any way on my internal HD and on the Toshiba is almost instant and navigation/scrolling is fast. On the Seagate, using Column and grid view works well, even setting the column view to sort (I use Modification Date) causes no hangs and I can easily scroll and select any artist, album or song. But as soon as I select List View for the Music Folder, it starts counting the files and hangs with a spinning beach ball FOREVER. I have to relaunch the Finder and instantly click off the window as it will otherwise hang immediately.
This only happens on the external Seagate, I can easily navigate and scroll the Music folders - which are identical - on my main and external Toshiba drive.
Here's what I did to troubleshoot this issue:
Deleted Finder pref. files (com.apple.finder.plist including lock file inside my Library folder, there were 4 who had some random numbers at the end.
Set all and specific folder views and list views to not sort
Ran Disk Utility from both internal and Rescue partition (no errors found)
Ran Onyx scripts to clean up and do maintenance (no issues popped up)
Booted up in Safe Mode and deleted pref files (as suggested on another forum)
    Reset PRAM
Confirmed this issue with other Mavericks boot drives and one Mountain Lion full backup.
I use Soundflower (mentioned in another post), Caffeine, and MenuMeters
Any ideas? Any other preference files to delete?

Thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly!
FYI, it seems specifically to happen when I expand a lot of folders in List View, and especially when I have multiple finder tabs/windows open—but that could just be subjective impression. There are no crash reports or anything in Console—I don't know of any other way to monitor the process.
I deleted the finder plist. I also uninstalled and reinstalled XtraFinder—which I’m quite sure wasn’t the problem, since it happened regardless of whether it was installed. In fact, if anything, it seems to crash less when Xtrafinder is active. I did have an additional (second) finder plist file which I deleted—I believe it was left over from TotalFinder—but that didn’t seem to fix it, although it also seems to be happening less frequently.
It’s definitely some sort of bug, and really only bothers me when trying to sort by Date—which can be done other ways, of course.
Will definitely keep you up to date if it changes, and thanks kindly again for your response.

  • Finder - Arrange by Name in List view

    Hi,
I have noticed that when i view a finder window in list view and then choose to arrange by name the view becomes different to what it would be before it was arranged. See my pictures for example:
    Before
    After
Notice that the titles become automatically spaced out and are much larger. I much prefer this view becaue it stops me having the widen the file name border in order to read long file names.
Does anyone know if there is a way to apply this to all folders? I have tried using this setting at the detault but it doesnt seem to carry through. I have also had a look in automator and there is no option to arrange by name in the list view settings.
    Help please!
    Thanks,
    Adrian

Well, it seems to work for me, so all I can suggest might be some problem with the Finder's preference file - com.apple.finder.plist - located in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. You could try putting it in the Trash, killing the Finder, then reconfiguring your window arrangements.
To kill the Finder press COMMAND-OPTION-ESC to open the task manager, select the Finder, then click on the Relaunch button.

  • Homefolder always opens in List-view

In Finder I had selected: Open a new window should open the Homefolder.
Configured the Homefolder (with cmd + J) to Symbol-view with big Icons and other Details.
But ever I open it new with command + N it is in List view…
If I open it from Mc HD / User / Homefolder the view is correct.
Could it be, that this happens, because I selected in the Settings you can reach with cmd + J the List-view as default?
If so, how to cancel this default?

    Hi Danielmak,
This Terminal command is not specifically related to Column View I'm afraid...
I don't fully understand what it does, but what I can tell you is that the script - for me & a few others - got rid of the common problem where the Finder-window only for the Macintosh HD (i.e. double-clicking on the Mac HD icon) always re-set back to Icon-View after a re-start, despite changing the window to List View and un-checking 'Always Open in Icon View' in View Options (Cmd+J).
I'm not sure I fully understand your problem, but..... You can have separate Finder-windows in different view-types (icon/list/column etc), BUT, the view-type does not automatically change between different types as you drill down into the folders in that particular window.
If you want a particular view-type & window-size to stick for each drive or folder on the desktop, you have to make your changes at the first level, then close the window... When you double-click again on that same drive, the view-type (don't forget to un-check the 'Always open in icon view' in View Options) & window position should be the same. If you drill down into the folders in that hard drive, & THEN make changes to view-type & window size, they will not stick (i.e. the next time you double-click on the HD icon, it will re-open in the originally-set position & view-type.)
Hope that helps. Apologies if I've misunderstood the question.
    All the best,
    Jason

  • Using PS Elements 11 on a Mac how can one replicate Finder folders in the Elements Organiser view?

Hi all - I have found the Organiser folder structure quite confusing and it does not seem to replicate the Finder folder structure other than randomly, unlike Bridge in PS for PC which I also use.
I would love to be able to create folders in elements or simply do so in Finder and find them show up in elements Organiser. It seems to me that only once I have saved an image to a folder in the Finder does it show up in the Organiser folder view. Is this correct?
Any suggestions around a sensible workflow or approach here would be most welcome, thanks. Sean

Many thanks Andaleeb - yes I have tried that and it seems only to add to the confusion - folders which in the Finder clearly show all my images are blank in PSE Organiser with the statement that they still have to be imported into PS Organiser. I guess that may be my fault because, due to the problems in locating files in Organiser I right clicked on them in the Finder and said 'open with PSE'. So in effect I bypassed PSE Organiser. But one would still have hoped that the folder hierarchy would be the same in Organiser and the Finder. Very confusing! I have never seen a program deal with folders etc in the way PSE does.
    all the best
    Sean

  • How do I get all Finder windows to open in spatial view?

How do I get all Finder windows without special view options set to open in the 'spatial' mode (without the toobar or sidebar)? The ones I specifically change stay that way, but I want all new and old folders to be like that too.

That's called the simple Finder mode. You would need to configure that as part of Parental Controls in the Accounts preferences. To make any Finder window appear that way jut click on the gadget in the top right corner of the Finder window.

  • Forcing Finder to Redraw Icons in List View

I have a project that requires me to take about 5000 TV shows files that reside in a folder and move them to another folder but to put them in a folder that has the Shows name on it. The original folder just has the show all in the one folder.
The only data that is meaningful for this project that I have available is the Date the file was created and the Icon of the file which has the shows picture on it. If I can see the icon and the date created I can usually identify which TV show the file belongs to.
I have the folder in list mode and it shows the large icon of the show.
My problem is getting the entire folder to redraw the icons. About 3/4 of the folder shows the generic icon and not the actual picture. Even if I highlight some of them and do a GetInfo the icons are not always redrawn.
Does any one know how I can force  the icons to be redrawn in the folder?

Well, it seems to work for me, so all I can suggest might be some problem with the Finder's preference file - com.apple.finder.plist - located in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. You could try putting it in the Trash, killing the Finder, then reconfiguring your window arrangements.

  • Why won't Finder open some folders in List view?

I cannot open some folders in Finder when it's in List View. For example, I have an external drive divided into 3 volumes: Ext A, Ext B, and Ext C. B & C open fine when I double click: A will not open at all, although sometimes Finder will open a blank window. If I click on the volumes in the Finder sidebar I get the same results. BUT if I switch to Column View it opens OK. Is this a bug or is there something wrong with my folder? (All volumes above have identical permissions.)

Thanks for the suggestion. I ran the disk verify utility and all the volumes checked out OK. It has also happened with one folder of the internal hard drive. I ended up copying all the data from that folder and putting into a new (re-named) folder, and deleting the original. The new folder was accessible OK.
It must be something to do with that one folder??
