Finder "modified date" changes whenever I view a file

I prefer to list files by date in the finder windows.
Whenever I just open a file without modifying it, the Finder changes it's modified date to Today.
Is it possible to set the Finder to only display actual content modification dates rather than any activity with the file?
Thx,

i've got the same issue....a huge pain. one way to "look at files" without changing the date is to hit the space bar in finder when you're on the file. that will launch the quick look feature and you can see if that's the file you want to open. i know its not the best solution, but a small step. if you find a real way to fix this... let me know.

  • Modified date changes when just opening PM file

We use modified dates frequently at my business. We have lots of things that reoccur only once a year, and we'd like to keep the file dates listed as such in the folder views.
All the sudden, however, Pagemaker files have started updating the modified date to the moment you touch the file, even if you make no changes. If you open it, it now becomes today's date & current time.  It's really messing up our method of doing things.
It's not happening with any of our CS4 files, or any Microsoft Office files. Also, it's only happening on files stored on the server. It doesn't happen when we do a test of saving a Pagemaker file locally. The problem is, we don't store anything locally. Everything is stored on the server so everyone can access the file and so it's backed up.
We have a Windows based computer environment but an Apple server with OS 10.3.8 (Tiger--- yeah, I know, old, but it's as far as we can update that server at this time and are looking at getting a new one sometime, but it might be a year or so.)
The "modified date" problem has taken place only in the past 2 weeks. We have not done anything significant for changes or updates for quite a while on either the local computer or server ends. We restarted the server recently just to refresh things, and also added another user to the server and set some permissions for that user in the past 2 weeks.
What could be causing this all of the sudden, and how can it be fixed?

Acrobat 9 makes PDF versions 4.0 and higher. You need a PDF version 5.0 to handle transparencies well. PDF version 4.0 doesn't handle transparency effects well at all.
Pagemaker needs Acrobat 5 to be able to directly export PDF's with custom job settings. It only generates a PDF version 4.0, but works for our needs in Pagemaker.
I choose to keep both Distiller versions to make our work easier. When you have 20 ads open in Pagemaker, and you send the first one as a postscript through the print window, it sets up the "File, Export" in Pagemaker to use the correct PDF job setting, and then you can just do "File, Export to PDF" for the next 19 ads and it makes perfect PDF's. Works slick instead of having to make postscripts of all 20 ads first and then run them through Distiller. If you only have Distiller 9 installed, it doesn't let you select any custom job settings from your Distiller. Crazy, I know, but that's what I've figured out we have to do to get it to work. Have to have Distiller 5.0 to control PDF settings in Pagemaker and still be able to export from the file menu directly to PDF.
Distiller 9 is used for all other more advanced design pieces created in InDesign or Photoshop that are saved as a postscript first and PDF's are made the long way in those cases (running postscript through Distiller 9 at the end).

I finally updated to OSX Lion and now when i access our Windows server 2012 server, as soon as i click to open a folder the date modified date changes to today. I am not opening any files just viewing the contents of the folder. This is causing a problem since we use the date modfied to sort customers jobs often.
It started after I installed OSX Lion. Any ideas?

  • "Modified date" changing on messages for what seems to be no reason. Very strange.

I have been working on an autoarchive issue with Outlook 2010 for a few days.  I found out that by selecting a message and pressing ALT+Enter you can see the modified date, sent and received dates, etc for the message.  I know if you move a message
or reply to a message it will change the "modified date" for that message.
However, what is happening to me is when I look at a message it updates the "modified date".  This is crazy!  I didn't know that looking at a message changed the modified date.  If this is the case how are you supposed to check the modified
date because when you check it it changes it to the current date and time.  Again, crazy.  Can someone shed some light on this for me?   thanks

    Hi,
You mean that when you view the message, the modified date change to the
current date and time? Based on my research, Editing, replying, or copying an Outlook item can change the last modified date.
So as this issue, start Outlook in safe mode to check the issue:
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/work-with-office-safe-modes-HP010354300.aspx
If the issue still occur in safe mode, then run Windows in clean boot mode - this will exclude 3rd-party services when starting Windows - for a period of time, and check if this behavior will
    still occur.

  • What makes an alias modified date change?

Anybody knows what can make an alias "modified" date change by itself?

Any modification of the file changes the Modified Date.

  • IMovie modified date changes if only opened

Whenever I open an iMovie file only to view it, not make any changes, then close the file, the Finder changes the modified date and time to equal the "Last Opened" date and time. I have noticed this through several generations of iMovie so I assume that everyone experiences the same.
What I wish to know is if this will have an impact on the backup process. For example, I have a pair of external hard drives containing iMovie projects. One is the source and the second is the backup. Many of the files are quite large, some as large as 25 GB. I surely wouldn't want my backup software to attempt to backup a 25 GB file simply because I opened it.
Does anyone know why the Modified time and date should change simply by opening a file and if my backup concerns are real.

My iMovie program, too, changes the modified date to the last opened date even if I don't modify it. I suspect that that's the way the program is designed.
I don't know the answer to your backup concerns. Would depend on what preferences that you set for your backup software. Easiest way to find out would be to make a small iMovie project, save it, then reopen and resave, and see what your backup program does with it.

  • Modified Date changes to now by selecting (not opening) vmwarevm file

    Yosemite OSX 10.10.2
VMware Fusion is currently not running, and it's disabled (an older version not compatible with Yosemite has not yet been upgraded) so I don't think Fusion is doing this....
I have VM files (.vmwarevm) that were not opened for months. I want to see which is which by viewing the date stamp in Finder. Clicking once shows the old date, then almost instantly it is changed to Now.  Like this:
    Created 2009-04-13, 1:23 PM
    Modified Today, <now>
    Last Opened Today, <now>
... but once changed those dates do not change again.
I found an un-clicked one and it did the same thing, with <now> as the time stamp on that one. Now I have files with slightly different "today" date stamps which is incorrect and not helpful to determine the age of these files.
It appears something (Preview?) is opening the file to access the content and generate a "recent screenshot" for the current state of the VM.
I found no other files [edit: no other file types] that behave this way.
I duplicated and renamed an odt file to .vmwarevm and it does not result in a Modified or Last Opened date change.
(one of the VMs also doesn't change so I suspect a bad file format).

  • Finder, modified date on file opening

Hi, I'm using PowerPoint for a .ppt file.
When I open this file finder make a change of the modified date with the date of opening...PowerPoint has a loading bar just few moment before opening this file, and then I can see the new modified date.....but if I don't make changes in this file why the date change??
This doesn't happen whit word or office.....I also tried to see if there are strange options on powerpoint that do this but whit no results.

    Karin,
a Java class on the server and on the client form could do this by calling File.lastModified and comparing the long numbers returned.
WebUtil does not provide this functionality - as far as I can see from a quick scan - so thi smay be a valid enhancement request.

  • Files transferred via Bonjour have 'Created' and 'Modified' dates changed

Okay, So I drag a file or folder of files to a name in the bonjour window to initiate a file transfer session between me and a co-worker. The transfer goes just fine; however, the "created", "modified", and "last opened" dates have all changed to the time when the file was transferred.
I have never noticed this before. Or, perhaps I just never had reason to view the time stamps.
I have tried transferring files to/from several different workstations running various system configurations. The results all seem the same. ALL the dates in the Get Info window are CHANGED!
    What the heck?? Anyone?

If it is a transferred file that is new to that computer then it is likely the modified date will be changed.
I am not sure about the Created date in these circumstances

  • Modified date changes in Word 2010 without saving.

Some files (made in Word 2k) I open and get asked if I want to update the links. I answer no. When closing the file the modified date is set to today. After turning off "update links" in the settings, I am not asked anything but still the modified
date is changed. This is a very undesired behavior. I would even consider it a
    bug .

The real issue is that it does not seem to be possible to stop Word from "updating" links to spreadsheets.  While it does not actually update the link if the option to update automatic links on open is unchecked, after opening a document containing
a link to a spreadsheet and then attempting to close it without doing anything else, you will be asked if you want to save the changes to the document.

I am not interested in the internal bookkeeping of Word. If I open a file to just read it, Word should not mess with the saved date under any circumstances.
    Hi victor,
I understand well enough that you don't have any date-type fields in your document. My suggestion for using the SAVEDATE field was simply to obtain from Word it's interpretation of when the file was last saved.
I fully agree that Word should not change the system 'modified' date if the file hasn't been changed. However, any such change is done by your system,
not by Word itself. So, what OS are you using? Is it part of a network? Does your Word file include any macros? If so, have you checked whether any of those macros include code to save the file?

  • Modified date changes with get

    Hello,
I am having trouble with synchronizing files with Dreamweaver CS6.
When I Get files from the server, the modified date for all the local files changes to the date/time that I did the Get, they do not reflect the modified date/time of those on the server, even though I have not modified any of them.
Then if I modify some of them (say 2 of 10 files) and go to synchronize, Dreamweaver will want to update all 10, not just the modified files.
I have tried checking and unchecking "Maitain synchronizatin information" but it doesn't seem to make any difference.
Sorry if this has been answered. I've been looking and have not found a solution.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!

If you "Get" all your files from the server, you are essentially saving over the top of the files you have locally, which changes the file modification date as would be expected.
After that, all of your local files would then have the same, newer modificaiton date than anything on the server, so it would make sense that they all want to be uploaded again when you "Put" the entire site.
If you are using Get and Put each time to try to synchronize your files, stop. Use the Synchronize function (circular arrows on the right end of the Files Window toolbar) instead. That will check the server files without transferring them to your computer and saving over your local copy and allow you to upload only the files that have changed (after the first use of Synchronize that is).

  • Identify modified date/time and name of SOURCE file

I can't seem to find a way to store/retrieve the last-modified date/time of the SOURCE file (as well as filename) used to create a PDF. I looked into the default metadata, but it seems to store only the last-modified date of the PDF.

I'm sorry, maybe I'm a little slow, but I would need more detailed specs on how to solve the problem. Is this something you have implemented yourself? If so, how?

  • Dates change from Numbers generated xls file when copy/pasted

I've saved a Numbers '09 file as xls and sent it to an Excel 2003 for Windows user.  The file looks great when they open it in Excel 2003.  But, when they copy and paste data into a different Excel 2003 file, the date changes about 4 years, which seems to make this a 1900/1904 issue.   But why?  If Excel 2003 opened up the original xls file generated by Numbers ok, why can't the dates be copy and pasted into another Excel 2003 spreadsheet?

Apple uses a year pattern that starts with the first day of the first leap year in the 20th century.
Microsoft originally adopted a year pattern that began with the first day of the last year of the 19th century (1900) which, although it was a year divisible by 4, was not a leap year.
Later, MS added the 1904 start pattern, but kept the1900 start pattern as well.
What is likely happening in the case you describe is this:
When Numbers traslates the document into Excel format and saves it, Numbers apparenly includes the flag that tells Excl 'use the 1904 start for dates.' Excel open the file, reads the code, and sets the calendar accordingly.
When the Excel 2003 user then copies the data frm that document, the copy picks up only the date serial number(s), and does not get the coded flag identifying which date system is in use.
That data is then pasted into the new Excel document, and with no flag to tell it different, Excel uses its 'normal' setting—the calendar starts on January 1, 1900—and all dates are interpreted as being four years earlier than they were in the original Numbers table or in the first Excel sheet.
I'd assume there is a setting that can be changed in Excel. Where to find it/how to use it would be a good question for an Excel community discussion site. (Although it's possible an answer might arrive here as well.)

    Barry

  • DS sends updates to DB only in commit (can't find modified data in same TX)

    Hello experts!
We have a physical data service mapping a simple Oracle database table. When we update one record in the database (invoking submit on the DS), and use a function in that same dataservice to get the refreshed record, the updated column comes with the OLD value. But after the transaction ends (we isolated this is a simple JWS), the database gets updated.
The most strange fact: we also did a test using another Data Service to do the update, now mapping a stored procedure to do the updates (without commits in body). Then the test works fine.
The conclusion I can reach is DSP is holding the instance somewhere after the submit() and is not sending it to the database connection. I understand that the commit is not performed, but if I do a query in the same TX, I should see my changed, shouldn't I?
We use WL 8.1.6 with DSP 2.5.
We´d appreciate very much if yuo guys could help.
    Thanks,
    Zica.

Let me get your scenario straight
    client starts a transaction
client calls submit to update a data services
client calls read to re-read the update value (does not see update)
    client ends the transaction
If you read now, you will see the update
And you're wondering why the first read doesn't seem the update values?
By default, ALDSP 2.5 reads are through an EJB that has trans-attrib=NotSupported - which means if you do a read within a transaction, that transaction is suspended the call is made without any transaction, then the transaction is resumed. So this is one reason you don't see the read. To do the read via an EJB method with trans-attribute=Required. See TRANSACTION SUPPORT at http://e-docs.bea.com/aldsp/docs25/javadoc/com/bea/dsp/dsmediator/client/DataServiceFactory.html
If you are using the control, the control will need to specify
    @jc:LiquidData ReadTransactionAttribute="Required"
That is only part of the solution. You will also need to configure your connection pool with the property KeepXAConnTillTxComplete="true" to ensure that your read is on the same connection as your write.
    <JDBCConnectionPool CapacityIncrement="2"
    KeepXAConnTillTxComplete="true" />
Then I have to ask - if your client already has the modified DataObject in memory, what's the purpose of re-reading it? If all you need is a clean ChangeSummary so you can do more changes (the ChangeSummary is not cleared when you call submit), you can simply call myDataObject..getDataGraph().getChangeSummary().beginLogging()

  • Why wont the modify date, change the creation date?

I tried to use the "Adjust Content Created Date and Time" option but it doesn't change the creation date.  So I have footage from 1992 stuck in a 2010 event folder.  From things I read online it says this should change too.  Am I reading this wrong?  Will 1992 be stuck in 2010 forever, ha.  Any help is great.  I have also provided a screen shot of the Event from 1992 stuck in the 2010 Event Library.

Yeah the change date inside of FCPX doesn't seem to work as advertised, however you can change the date, so that FCPX sorts it properly.  First delete the clip from FCPX, make sure you have the original somewhere though.
Open a terminal window and use the following command:
    touch -t 199211280800.00 <path/filename>
Where the format is:  (use leading zeros if necessary for date & time)
    first four digits: year
    next four:  month and day
next four:  time of day (in 24 hour format)
next 2:  seconds as a decimal (this is optional, if you leave it off you will get 00 seconds)
The above example will change the file date to Nov. 8, 1992  08:00:00 AM
This will change the created, modified and last access dates of the clip/file.
Then reimport the clip and FCPX should recognize it properly.
I've done a dozen or so rips from VHS of old home movies and here is how I change the dates.  Works every time.
