Finder sidebar - shared and recent items

We upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion, and have a few questions about the Finder sidebar.  A new feature in ML, the Finder Sidebar between "Favorites" and "Devices" is a new section called "Shared".  Maybe "shared" isn't a new feature, but we didn't notice it until we upgraded.  I see my printer and a few other unknown devices there.  I even see a device that looks like it could be a neighbors computer.   Is there any way to edit this, or block other computers from showing up?  My WiFi network gateway is password protected, so I don't think it's because of that.  I'm sure they can't access my computer without some type of login credentials, but still I would like to remove some of these shared devices from the Finder's sidebar.  I know I can "hide" the devices seen under Shared, but I want to block these from showing up in the first place.  Is this possible?
My next question about the sidebar is that I no longer see recently modified files.  In Snow Leopard, I could click on the finder window, and the sidebar would show files last modified either "Today" or "Yesterday".   This made things really easy on me, but now I have to maneuver through the various pathways and sort files to the latest modified.   Again, is there any way to modify the sidebar to add this feature back?
Thanks in advance

Ok, I think I may have figured the first part out.  Steps to remove shared devices from the finder sidebar:
Click somewhere on the desktop to select the "Finder"
Click on "Finder" next to the Apple in the top left corner
Select the Finder's "preferences"
Select the Sidebar tab
Under Shared, deselect "Connected Servers" and "Bonjour computers"
Now if we can just figure out how to bring back the recently modified files under "Today" or "Yesterday" like we had in Snow Leopard...
Any ideas?

  • Iweb sidebar lost and menu items greyed out

I need help getting iweb running again. After I published to a folder, I lost the sidebar and cannot access anything within the program. Have shut down, repaired permissions but don't have any idea what to do next. I had three websites developed but not published and I hope they are not gone for good.
The tool bar, inspector, fonts and colors all can be accessed from the menu and this leads me to believe that the program is functional. Yet why can't I get a new page or new site?

Hi, I just reinstalled the iweb program. Nothing changed. It is still non-functional. My procedure was to
take the app out of the applications folder and put it in the trash. Perhaps this wasn't the best way to do it. I did a custom install selecting only iweb. The sidebar is still not available and the menu items are all grey.
Its a 4 hour round trip to the apple store, and am hoping that someone might be able to help me at least get the iweb up and running again.
I once had a problem with another application and it took my window off the desktop, I was wondering if somehow the operating window is around but not visible? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated since I can't sleep and need to get this situation solved.

  • Home Sharing and Show Items not in my Library

I was very excited to finally be able easily sync up the iTunes libraries on my new home mini and my laptop, I was even more excited by the "Items not in my Library" option... but I seem to be having a issue it, that is probably a bug, and I'm wondering if others are seeing it too in 9.0.2:
I transferred over an album no problem, then I went to transfer a setlist of live tracks by the same artist. Because it's live, many of the song names are the same. I had the *Show Items not in my Library* option selected and it hid (and thus didn't transfer) some of the tracks. I later realized that it had hidden the tracks that had the same name as the original album, even though they are quite different.
I hope others experience this same issue and Apple will release an update fixing it. This issue will make it impossible to realiably synchronize libraries as they change.
BTW - I've also noticed if you choose *Show: All items* and import a file that is a real duplicate it will copy it over and append a "1" creating a duplicate as opposed to replacing or updating the file.
    Thanks,
    =Blair

The import button remains greyed out and therefore unavailable.
Quickly doublechecking ... has the MacBook gone to sleep? If it's awake, does the Import button become active for you?

  • Fav and recent items

I can't add those to the start menu anymore?
I use those a lot in W7 and why wouldn't anybody?
    please add them back.
    thanks!

You may use Pin to this list by right clicking on the item.

  • Why does my mac duplicate itself in the shared section of the finder sidebar?

My mac Mini finder sidebar shared section has my mac duplicated eight times and won't allow me access to them. It appeared after the update to Yosemite. How do i get rid of them on the network?

  • Clear recent items is broken in 10.8 (major privacy issue!)

Clearing recent items is now completely broken under Mountain Lion.
    Try this experiment:
    1. Open an image in Preview.app.
    2. File > Open Recent > Clear Menu
So is it gone now?  No!!! They are not gone.  You can still see what somebody previous viewed in that app by going to one of 2 places:
    1. Right-click the app's icon in the Dock and recent items are ALWAYS there, never cleared.
    2. Use Mission Control to view Application Windows and you still see recent items at the bottom of your screen.
Previously in Lion, this occured, but there was a workaround that involved clearing recent items, quitting the app, then relaunching the app, then the recent stuff wouldn't be visible anywhere.  This workaround no longer works.
If you need to be guarenteed privacy with certain images like confidential bussiness documents, any embaressing photos or dirty pictures, do NOT upgrade to Mountain Lion because it will show those to anyone who happens to be nearby when you use Expose / Mission Control and you will not be able to work around it anymore.
If by chance this is not a bug and was intended behavior, tell Apple to stop it (or find yourself a new operating sytem that doesn't violate privacy.)

First, in response to Adrian Clarke's suggesetion of clearing the system-wide recents and that didn't work for me, but thanks.
Regardless, I think I found a permenant solution for Preview (but not TextEdit).
    1. Go into ~/Library/Preferences
    2. Search the folder for the phrase "Preview"
    3. The first time I did the search, I found 3 or 4 things related to Apple's Preview application.  I deleted them all.
    4. Go to Terminal and type "killall Dock"
NOTE:  Under Mountain Lion it appears (to me at least) the old "killall Dock" command does not always make the Dock relaunch automatically as it did in previous versions of OS X, so you might have to logout/login as well.
Going back to look at them again hours later, not all the files have rebounded or been recreated.  So I can't tell you all their names exactly.  I can only tell you the names of the files that get remade, which again isn't all the files that I deleted.
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.preview.LSSharedFileList.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preview.SandboxedPersistentURLs.LSSharedFileList .plist
Again, the paths of the other files are lost since I didn't note them before deleting them, but just search your Preferences folder for "Preview".
Now TextEdit was exhibiting the same undesierable behavior as well, so I tried doing the same for TextEdit:  Search preferences and deleting anything related to it.
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TextEdit.LSSharedFileList.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TextEdit.LSSharedFileList.plist.lockfile
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TextEdit.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TextEdit.plist.L2YUl2h
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TextEdit.plist.lockfile
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TextEdit.SandboxedPersistentURLs.LSSharedFileLis t.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TextEdit.SandboxedPersistentURLs.LSSharedFileLis t.plist.lockfile
After deleting them all and using TextEdit for a bit, the only files that rebounded were:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TextEdit.LSSharedFileList.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TextEdit.SandboxedPersistentURLs.LSSharedFileLis t.plist
But does it work on TextEdit?  Sorta but not really.  It works until you perform a reboot, then the old problem returns, afflicting TextEdit again.  But Preview continues to behave correctly after a reboot.  Why these results are so inconsitent is truly confusing.  I suspect there's a bug (or multiple bugs).  If anybody can offer a solution for TextEdit, I'd be very appreciative.  In the meantime, if this bug affects you, maybe consider switching from TextEdit to another app until this gets fixed.

  • Lock finder sidebar to prevent accidental deletion

Somehow I occasionally drag an item from the Finder sidebar thus deleting it. Is there any way to lock the sidebar to prevent accidental deletions. I want to still be able to unlock it to add or remove items.

It appears you have been using Apple computers for a while (according to your profile), so you most likely already know that when things get accidentally dragged off the Finder sidebar, they are not actually deleted. All items in the sidebar are only aliases, and still reside where you originally saved them.
Like I say, I bet you already know that.
As to your question, I did a quick Google search for "apple finder sidebar lock" and found a bunch of hits (including this post). Since you are the one with the question, I'll let you do the looking. Or maybe one of the resident geniuses will know.
    Good luck.

  • In the lefthand sidebar of Finder, under 'Shared', I encounter in addition my TC, another computer, identified by a long name starting with 'hp'. I don't have another computer. What could this be? And how to get rid of it?

In the Finder sidebar, under 'Shared', I encounter my TC, as well as another item with a long name starting with 'hp'. 'Get info' shows it to be a 'PC'. However, I don't have a PC. It cannot be my printer (HP), since that has anoter name.
I can not access the item, which has me a 'guest'.
What could this item be? And how to get rid of it?
Many thanks in advance for your help.
    DB

It's almost certainly your hp printer and is showing the WiFi adapter MAC address after the HP.
To verify, look at the printer configuration page via Bonjour in Safari.  The settings tab shows the Mac address in the bottom left hand corner for my model of HP printer.
I'm sorry but I can't explain why that would show up in the finder.

  • Is this normal to find Servers in "Recent Items"?

While I have been trying to save data on a crashed computer – the Desktop has disappeared and the Finder can't be found – I found something I have never noticed before.
On the menu at the top of the screen, when I click on "Recent Items" I find "Servers". Under "Servers", I find two blue colored drives called "Scan" and "SharedDocs".
I am doing file sharing at the moment but I don't use the names "Scan" or "SharedDocs".
Before my Desktop disappeared and the hard drive got corrupted, I wasn't doing any file sharing. All I was doing was backing up my computer. The backup failed though because the external drive got disconnected from the computer when the lid of the Macbook Air suddenly opened to 180 degrees (the hinge is broken).
I restarted the computer and attempted to backup the computer again but that failed and then the hard drive filled up all of a sudden. I did Disk Repair using the installation disc but that was when the Desktop and Finder disappeared. This is to give some background to what happened. I don't think anyone is spying on me but I don't remember seeing the Servers before under "Recent Items". Maybe they have been there all along but I haven't noticed them.

If I can help set your mind at rest, this is normal. If you look in the Finder preferences (if you can find them -- see below) they are fourth in the list of items to show on the desktop, and I would guess that this may be related.
The names you are seeing my be partitions on the disks you have been connecting to.
It sounds as if you have major disk corruption and the fact that it filled up suddenly suggests the Finder was unable to report the data correctly. If you have the data off (backed up) then you will lose nothing by trying to erase and then reinstalling the OS. If there are any problems during that process, it would indicate a defective hard disk and replacement is the best option.

  • Why do we get a number next to a shared device in finder sidebar?

Does anyone know how to stop the appearance of a number next to a shared device number in the Finder sidebar window?
    OSX Yosemite, version 10.10.2
    Thanks.

There are several possible causes for this behavior.
    1. Two (or more) computers on the local network have the same Bonjour name, such as "X's-MacBook-Pro.local". Resolve the name conflict by renaming one or more of them in the Sharing preference pane.
    2. You have two simultaneous connections to the same local network: probably Ethernet and Wi-Fi. If applicable, disconnect the Ethernet cable or turn off Wi-Fi.
    3. A Mac wakes from sleep due to network traffic. This is a bug in OS X that may only affect some models. You can avoid it as follows:
Open the Energy Saver pane in System Preferences and unlock the settings, if necessary. Select the Power Adapter  tab, if there is one. Uncheck the box marked
              Wake for Wi-Fi network access
    if it's checked.
    4. A device that gets its network address from the router wakes from sleep, and the address it was using before has been assigned to another device.
    5. A third-party wireless router has incompatible settings or firmware. In that case, refer to the manufacturer or ISP for support. Restarting the router may help, temporarily.
    6. If the router is an Apple device, it may need to be restarted.
    7. A third-party Bonjour device on the network is malfunctioning. Finding out which is a process of elimination.
    8. There is more than one DHCP server on the network. Typically, there would be two or more wireless access points configured to act as routers.
    9. See this support article.
    10. Back up all data. Make notes of your settings in the Network preference pane.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
              Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "SystemConfiguration" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator password.
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. You will need to recreate the network settings.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Remove Shared option from Finder Sidebar in OSX 10.5

    Afternoon all
We are using a small number of iMac’s in our network, all of which are still using OSX 10.5 (v10.5.8). As our network is predominantly Microsoft based, we have no central control over the iMac’s, thus any configuration of them is done locally via the Workgroup Manager (WMG).
We have locked the iMac’s down using the WMG to prevent our end users from accessing certain applications etc.... However one default item that is still in place that is causing us concern is the Shared option in the Finder sidebar. If a user clicks on the Shared option, they can browse all the shared folders; and see all the devices attached to the network (Desktops, Servers etc…)
We know that you can disabled the Shared option for the current user by click on Finder > Preferences > Sidebar. However we cannot see a similar option to disable it via the WMG. We cannot seem to find either a specific plist file for the sidebar that we could edit and use for all users.
    This raises two questions:
Does the WMG for 10.5 allow you to disable items in the sidebar like the Shared option?
If it cannot, do the newer version of OSX/WMG have this functionality?
Any help/pointers would be appreciated to get this issue resolved

    Morning
Sorry for the delay in replying.
The lockdown is being performed on the root account. As it is a local account and cannot see the domain, there are no items populated in the /User/Shared folder
As for editing the com.apple.sidebarlists.plist file, if we could find a way of opening it so that its contents appear in a descriptive manner so that we could edited it, then that could be a possibility. However even if we could do that, how could we use that file so that every users picks these settings up everytime they login?

  • ICal holidays missing - Find Shared Calendars menu item broken

In iCal, Calendar menu, Find Shared Calendars...
This menu item takes you to a broken (as of today) link:
    http://www.apple.com/ical/library/

When clicking "Find Shared Calendars...," Leopard OS system sends IP packets to nwk-www.apple.com, 17.149.160.10.
    ・Source IP Address (private): 192.168.1.2
・Destination IP Address: 17.149.160.10 at the beginning of the session for "Find Shared Calendars..." procedure.
Leopard 10.5.1 sends a DNS query to connect 128.241.220.87 that is NTT America. Communications between Leopard and NTT America go for a while. So is Omniture's server followed. Some unique user's information is transmitted on all the servers communication.
Leopard queries DNS server (208.67.2222.222 which I set for Leopard) for metrics.apple.com (this seems to be a server for iTunes Store). What the deuce Leopard needs to call iTunes Store at the phase of finding iCal sharing calendar?
Besides, I have not been purchased any products from iTunes Store for years.
Actually, NTT America has been attempting odd access behaviors to my nodes for the recent few years before the business with Apple started whenever the hacker (I have been tracking him for three years.) is right behind me.
Now NTT America 128.241.220.87 replies to Leopard with the ACK (TCP Acknowledgement flag) bit. Next, nwk-www.apple.com (17.149.160.10) also sends Leopard a ACK bit simultaneously. Leopard answers it with the ACK. Now the DNS server replies the ten host addresses to the query of metrics.apple.com: appleglobal.112.2o7.net, 66.151.152.125, 66.151.152.126, 66.151.152.143, 128.241.21.13, 128.241.21.14, 128.241.21.15, 128.241.21.146, 128.241.21.149 and 128.241.21.163.
66.151.152.xxx = Omniture, Inc that provides web analytics solutions for internet channel monitoring. They operates the 2o7.net domains. For more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omniture
    128.241.21.xxx = NTT America, Inc. (http://www.nttamerica.com/products/index.php)
At the last session, Leopard queries "wsidecar.apple.com," but strangely the DNS server answer the canonical address which is "wsidecar.apple.com.akadns.net" with its address 17.149.160.15 but not DNS registered address 17.112.152.39.
17.149.160.15 (Apple's server but not 17.149.160.10) sends Leopard a FIN/ACK bit which means the TCP connection is closed by the server ONE-SIDEDLY despite Leopard answers to 17.149.160.15 with the acknowledgement to get ready for the US calendar sync data download start.
    Here is a nslookup wsidecar.apple.com:
    $ nslookup
    wsidecar.apple.com
    Server: 208.67.222.222
    Address: 208.67.222.222#53
    Non-authoritative answer:
    wsidecar.apple.com canonical name = wsidecar.apple.com.akadns.net.
    Name: wsidecar.apple.com.akadns.net
    Address: 17.112.152.39
CONCLUSION: There are a few inconsistencies on TCP/IP communications.
My computer: Power Mac G5 Dual 2.7 GHz/5GB DDR SDRAM
OS: Mac OS X 10.5.1 and Mac OS X 10.4.11 for dual boot.

  • After upgrading to Yosemite I cannot see my other iMac at home (note I am at work) in the Finder window shared devices.  Note my iMac at home is connected to an airport extreme (as is my work iMac) and I can see both airport extreme.

Aftger I upgraded to Yosemite I cannot see my iMac at home from my work (i.e in Finder window under shared devices).  Note both my work and home iMac are connected to time capsules and I can see both of those time capsules but I cannot see either iMac from the other location.  My guess is that the time capsule is blocking the connection to the iMac.  One last comment occasionally (5% of the time) my iMac does magically appear in the shared Finder window but this is extremely rare.  Any help????

Just discovered this one myself.  OK, this may sound silly but place your cursor next to the word "Shared" on the finder sidebar.  The "hidden" command "Show" will magically appear.  Clicking that will display your other network attached devices.
This appears to be a new "feature" that some freaking genius thought was some how "Cool".   My only assumption is that Apple programers expect users to randomly move their cursor around the screen in hopes of finding some critical function like looking for an easter egg in their favorite game.

  • How to use the sharing function with other pc on the Finder sidebar?

I discver my housemates' pc's names under "sharing" on the Finder sidebar. We all use the same wifi network at home.  Neither they nor I have enabled anything so I'm just wondering what is that for and where am I able to control sharing options?
Also I can even access their iTunes libraries. How do these all work? Am I able to set any security options at all?
