Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Step 1
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • The application 'Finder' unexpectedly quit while trying to restore its windows.

Hello All.  I solicit your help and advice please.
When I started up on my Macbook Pro (v10.7.5) this morning the Finder icon was flashing along with a flashing message that states "Restore Windows.  The application 'Finder' unexpectedly quit while trying to restore its windows.  Do you want to try to restore its windows again?"  This has never happened before.
Unfortunately, when I try to select "Restore Windows", it will not respond and keeps flashing.  I shut down and tryed a restart but the same thing has happened and I have now lost my Desktop icons and screensaver.  Can anyone help me?  Thanks very much!

Hello Brody, and Thank you for responding.
I have been on the phone with Apple Support for awhile and they cannot completely diagnose the problem after many attempts at deleting plist files, etc.  This one has them scratching their heads a bit (I must say they have been Excellent with their time and effort).
We have reesatblished "Finder" operationally and I have been able to restore and access most files but the problem was resident on the Deskstop I may have to visit the "Genius Desk" for follow-up as necessary.
I much appreciate your response and am very glad for the Community.  Thank you again.

  • Finder unexpectedly quit while trying to restore its windows

    Hi.
I was looking at my photos on a folder in my desktop. Suddenly my mac got slower and Finder popped out. It said "Finder unexpectedly quit while trying to restore its windows", and dont restore windows /  restore windows.       So I clicked restore windows. It closed and pooped out again and said the same thing. So I clicked dont restore windows. It happened again, closed and popped out. I am was using OS X Lion 10.7, so I upgraded to 10.7.2, but it was still popping. I opened my mac in safe mode, restarted it for a million times but it is still on my dock jumping and blocking my desktop. How am I going to fix it?

Selecting the "No" button will tell Finder not to try and reopen the windows.

    Hallo,
I tried several things but what really helped was "Main Menu Pro".
you can download a trial version from http://mainmenuapp.com/
go through the menu and clean up your disk and it should run fine. my problem was that there was some stuff in the trash that was blocking everthing. i am still using that software and it really does it without complicated procedure.
    good luck

  • "Finder" unexpectedly quits

My Finder will not launch, I get "Finder" unexpectedly quit while trying to restore its windows in blinking window. I can not see any icons on my desktop. There are two choices are presented "Don't restore windows" and "Restore window" but that window itself is not stable it keeps blinking.  Is there a solution to this problem?

    Try this.
    1. click on "spotlight" on the top right corner of your desktop.
    2. type "terminal" (without the quotation marks) and open it.
    3. when the terminal opens, type "cd desktop" and hit enter.
    4. type "rm -rf .DS_Store" and enter
    5. type "exit" and enter
If it doesn't work try the follow:
    1. click on "spotlight" on the top right corner of your desktop.
    2. type "terminal" (without the quotation marks) and open it.
    3. when the terminal opens, type "sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/" (This will empty your trash) and enter
    4. type your administrator password. As you type, you will not see any character on the screen. Just type it and hit enter. (If you left your password blank, you have to make one by going to system preferences - users & groups - change password)
    5. type "exit" and enter

  • Finder Unexpectedly Quits, tried other solutions, yet to find an answer.

I have a MacBook and whenever I open finder it unexpectedly quits and then the window asking if I want to reopen starts to flash non-stop. I have looked at other forums on this site and couldn't solve the problem. Any suggestions on what I do?
    I have tried this:
    rm Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
If that doesn't work, try this:
    rm Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist
    Finder Unexpectedly Quits
I have tried downloading maintanence and it wouldn't work. The person's laptop that is having the problem also forgot their administrator password which just adds to the frustration. If you have any ideas that would be awesome! Thanks for your time.

If they are *Menu Extras* (clock, battery, etc), you can move them by command-dragging. These are special menu items though - a status menu placed there by an application cannot be moved, it is just tacked on to the end of the other items.

  • Finder Unexpectedly quit error message when rebuilding desktop in 9

When I try to rebuild the desktop, I am still getting the Finder Unexpectedly Quit error. This is happening with my iMac G3. I'm running OS 9.2.2 and 10.4.3. I followed all the directions in the Apple Help file here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2344
but it is not rebuilding the desktop at all. Every time I do I get that error message at startup even with extensions off. Is something wrong with my computer?

Nevermind. I figured out the solution. I ran Disk First Aid and it showed a lot of catalog problems so I just clicked Repair. When I tried to rebuild the desktop again, it worked. But if anyone else gets this error they can look at this thread.

  • Finder unexpectedly quit! can't seem to find a fix...

"The last time you open finder, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows." message came up and it seem it wont go away, even if i click reopen or don't reopen. The icon on the dock keeps jumping up and down. I created a second user on the same machine and finder is working fine on this user. What should i do???

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

    Step 1
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
DO NOT INDISCRIMINATELY DUMP THOUSANDS OF LINES FROM THE LOG INTO A MESSAGE. If you do that, I will not respond.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

  • Finder 'unexpectedly quit'/crash, double tap on trackpad

Since upgrading to 10.4.8 ive been (increasingly) experiencing problems connected to the trackpad's right-click (2 fingers) functionality. The problem also appears when using my tablet pen's right click funtionality.
finder simply crashes, gives an unexpected quit message and restarts. it happens when tapping with two fingers and executing one of the functionalities, mainly delete, new folder and empty trash. the problem DOESNT appear when using single tap combined with 'ctrl' button.
has anyone experienced similar problems and possibly been able to solve it?
    any help would be appreciated!

  • Help! 'The application the finder unexpectedly quit...."

    Hello,
This morning when I started my mac something odd happened once I logged into my account.
The application the finder kept quitting and restoring itself.
It's exactly the same thing as this...
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4031586?start=0&tstart=0
However his process doesn't fix my problem.
Here some information you might need:
    Version 10.7.5 (up to date)
    2.93 GHz Intel core i7
    Thanks

Finder crashes are often caused by "Google Drive." If it's installed, I suggest you first check for an update. If that doesn't solve the problem, remove it according to the developer's instructions. You may need to start the computer in safe mode to do so. Back up all data before making any changes.
If you use Google Drive and don't want to remove it, then try deselecting the option in its preferences to "show status icons." According to reports, that may be enough to stop the crashing.
Similar cloud-data clients such as "Dolly Drive," "iDrive," "Open Drive," "Transporter Desktop," and others can cause the same problem.

  • Wolfenstein 3D - Finder Unexpectedly Quit Error

I don't know if its the game or what but on the final level of Wolfenstein 3D for the Mac, there's a place I hide to kill enemies and all of a sudden, the game closes out and the Mac says "The Finder Has Unexpectedly Quit". It is doing this on my G3 OS 9. My OS 8.6 never did this so I think it might be my computer. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
    -Nick

    Hi, Nick -
First thing to try is to increase the Preferred memory allocation for the program.
Article #18278 - Assigning More Memory to an Application
Don't be shy about increasing the allocation - add at least 50%, or even doubling what's preset now as Preferred. More can help, provided you have sufficient RAM to support it.
I've found that even if a game's requirements state that Virtual Memory must be enabled, this is not always true. Example - Diablo II states that Virtual Memory must be enabled; but by setting the game's Preferred memory allocation to a bit under 500MB it runs just fine with Virtual Memory turned off.

  • Finding photos after restoring windows 8 to Factory Settingd

where to find photos placed in hidden folder in  C  after restoring windows to factory settings

    HI @Xarar,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
It is a terrific place to find answers.
For you to have the best experience in the HP forum I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide Learn How to Post and More
It is my understanding the you did a recovery back to factory.  If you did a full factory recovery, it would have reformatted the drive, recreated the partitions and reinstalled the software back to factory.  That means all data on the hard drive would be gone.
You can do a Google search for data recovery.  You may be able to locate data recovery software that would allow you to retrieve your photos.
    Good Luck!
