FireFox 4, Ubuntu 10.04 - menu bar and bookmarks are locked

I recently upgraded to Firefox 4 on ubuntu 10.04. I did this by setting the ppa as described in many places: For example:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
After doing this, firefox has been working for many days just fine. On several of my systems [ 3 of my systems ].
Now I come back to one of my 10.04 systems and find that the menus of firefox are unresponsive. They do not work at all. The book marks do not work.
Processor is not busy.
Plenty of memory.
Network is working fine.
If I type into the google search bar and type enter I get a page and I can navigate from there, but the menus and bookmarks are totally unresponsive.
What gives?
I have rebooted the system and nothing changes.
Menus work fine in other apps, for example System Monitor. and the Window Manager menus are fine.
Menus work fine in the web pages.
Bookmark menus highlight, they do not pull down.
Menus on the menu bar do not pull down.
Toolbar buttons work fine.

I fixed the problem by starting firefox in a terminal. Works when you start it that way, and works fine afterward.
This problem was reported by me ages ago ( i forgot actually).

Strange. but the bug is still with us after all this time.

  • After upgrading to version 4, maximizing my Firefox browser window changes the menu, navigation, and bookmarks bars to a very dark color scheme

    When the window is 'floating', the colors are normal. Maximized, the background color is near-black and the text has a glowing appearance. I downloaded and and applied a different theme in trying to fix the problem, to no avail. I have never used a dark theme for Firefox, so it should not be a buggy recurrence of an old setting.

    You just need more RAM for the software you are using. Yosemite likes a lot of RAM and an SSD.

  • How to resize Tabs, Menu bar and Bookmarks Bar 36.0, no "userChrome.css" file help?

    So I lost my profile when FF updated, and had to create a new one. From what I can tell, to do what I want to do I need a Chrome Folder inside the new profile folder. There was none, so I created one. I also created a .css file named exactly how I put it in the title, is this the correct name, or should "user" be my profile name?
    Last but not least, here is the exact text I have in the file, nothing more, or less, just this:
    <pre><nowiki>@namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul"); /* only needed once */
    #TabsToolbar { height: 15px !important; }
    #PersonalToolbar {height: 4px !important;}
    #BookmarksToolbar {height: 4px !important;}
    #MenuToolbar {height: 4px !important;}
    #tabbrowser-tabs { height: 15px !important; }
    #TabsToolbar { margin-top:-15px!important; }</nowiki></pre>
    Saved the file. Restarted FF, no effect. Changed numbers, still no effect.
    TIA for help.
    p.s there is likely some redundacy there for sure, please advise. I want all 3 in title of thread smaller (as in less height)

    I use this code to resize the Tab bar.
    I'm on Linux, so you may have to adjust or omit the margin-top and margin-bottom properties.
    <pre><nowiki>#TabsToolbar { height:25px!important; margin-top:-1px!important; margin-bottom:1px!important; }
    #tabbrowser-tabs { height:25px!important; min-height:25px!important; }
    .tab-background-start[selected=true]::after,
    .tab-background-start[selected=true]::before,
    .tab-background-start,
    .tab-background-end,
    .tab-background-end[selected=true]::after,
    .tab-background-end[selected=true]::before {
    min-height:25px!important;
    }</nowiki></pre>

  • I REALLY don't like the way the tool bar and bookmarks are set up in firefox 4. Is there a way to change back to the old style?

    I want to return to the old format, but don't know how!

    No problem, I'm glad to help.

  • Is it possible to resize the Menu Bar and other toolbars to make them smaller vertically?

    With the update to Firefox 4 my menu bar and toolbars are now taking up significantly more space than they where previously - is there any way to resize them so they take up less space?

    Thanx, I had searched for "compact themes" and didn't find all of those for some reason (may have been a typo in the search field... I do that sometimes... =/ )

    Do you mean the Bookmarks Menu button on the Navigation Toolbar?
    You only see that button if the menu bar is hidden.

    If that still doesn't work then see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Corrupt_localstore.rdf
    (caution: do not delete the localstore.rdf file in the Firefox program installation folder)
    Note:
    Deleting the file [http://kb.mozillazine.org/localstore.rdf localstore.rdf] will reset the customizations of the toolbars to the defaults.
    You can rename ''localstore.rdf'' to '''localstore.rdf.sav''' to test if that solves it.
    Then you can restore the customization by copying ''localstore.rdf.sav'' to ''localstore.rdf'' if it didn't work.

  • I've lost the menu bar and want to get it back

    I used the task bar to remove the menu bar and now it is gone and I can't use the menu to get it back. I've lost the web address bar everything so can't use the webpage. I would uninstall but it doesn't come up in my list of programs. I tried deleting the program and reintroducing it but it came back with the same lack of task bars. I was only trying to tidy all the gumpf fro the top of the page, not remove the functionality of the thing.

    * In Firefox 3.6 versions on Windows and Firefox 4 on Windows and Linux it's possible to hide the "Menu Bar" via "View > Toolbars" or via the right-click context menu of a toolbar.
    * Press F10 or press and hold the Alt key down to bring up the "Menu Bar" temporarily.
    * Go to "View > Toolbars" or right-click the "Menu Bar" or press Alt+V T to select which toolbars to show or hide (click on an entry to toggle the state).

  • How do I put my menu bar and address bar back at the top?

    I closed my menu bar and address bar, etc. Now I can get them back I even tried reinstalling Firefox and that didn't work. Opposite clicking the top of the page doesn't work, either. HELP!

    Hit the '''Alt''' key to show the Menu bar, then open View > Toolbars and select Menu bar, so it has a check-mark.

  • Is it possible to have the menu bar and the tabs on the same level?

    Just downloaded Firefox 4 and I've started to get used to tabs being above the address bar (since it fits the theme so well), but I'm not used to the loss of the menu bar. When I bring the menu bar back, however, it creates a whole new level instead of being on the same level as the tabs like the Firefox button is. I'm just wondering if there's a way to make the menu bar and the tabs on the same level.

    No, that is not possible.
    Press F10 or press and hold the Alt key down to bring up the "Menu Bar" temporarily.

  • When in Firefox 4 I marked the menu bar to be visible, I want the backgound to be solid, not see-through.

    The background color for the url line and menu bar on my Firefox 4 is see-through, not solid. I can see my desktop in the background in those locations. How do I get a solid color background?
    Please respond to [email protected] I had to use an old email address to register as they offered no opportunity to change to user name and my standard user name apparently did not work.

    Try this change through the Windows Control Panel
    Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Personalization
    at the bottom Window color
    Transparency turn off, and adjust color characteristics.
    http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/icons/w7_window_color_and_appeance.png
    If things are okay after that then I guess your problem is fixed; otherwise, continue.
    Transparency in Firefox just because you have Windows 7 is the pits, especially when you've tried to go out of your way to turn transparency off in Windows 7.
    You could install a Persona, but most of those make the toolbars almost as hard to read as the transparency. But there are some light pastel colors that might work.
    I add some color to the menu bar, and more grayish on the navigation bar, and almost white on the tabs bar using styles. Originally it was just the menu bar and the background for dialogs so that I could distinguish one profile from another.
    You must install "Stylish" extension in order to use styles at least it make things easier than using userChrome and restarting Firefox with each little tweak.
    Actually in looking at the before and after picture perhaps you don't have transparency turned off in Windows 7.
    Adjust the color and transparency of the window borders. This option allows you to change the appearance of window borders to make them easier to see.
    If the change in the control panel did not work...
    If that doesn't fix it, this is what I was referring to:

    Here's a little test, sometimes like less than 5% of the time I get my colors and good formatting. Do you see transparent background, white background, gray background.

  • Why can't the Menu Bar and the Navigation Tool, share the same line?

    With the Menu Bar and the Navigation Tool, now on separate lines, there's all this wasted space right above the address bar. What mental giant thought this up?

    You can move the items on the Navigation Toolbar to the Menu bar if you want to have them on that bar.
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Toolbar_customization
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Back+and+forward+or+other+toolbar+items+are+missing
    Note that you are not able to click items on the menu bar if you hide the menu bar to get the Firefox menu button and use Alt or F10 to display the Menu bar (it is a bug).

  • Combine menu bar and navigation bar in a single horizontal space

    I would like to have the navigation bar controls to the right of the menu bar options in the same horizontal space, saving vertical space. This could be done with side-by-side bars or one "compound bar".
    Can I do this? How? Thanks for your help.

    Use the procedure in the following link. It shows how to customize the toolbars, allowing you to drag and drop the items you want onto the menu bar. You can then hide the navigation toolbar - https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/how-do-i-customize-toolbars
    You can, if you prefer, hide the menu bar and it will be replaced with the Firefox button. To do that right-click on a toolbar and click on the "Menu bar" entry to de-select it. Then using the Firefox 4 UI Fixer add-on you can convert the Firefox button into an ordinary button that can be moved like other buttons on the toolbar - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/firefox-4-ui-fixer
