"Firefox is already runing..." error. (It's not a locked profile.)

When I'm trying to open a new window from an external program, i.e, from the taskbar (right-clicking on the FF icon), open a link in an email from Thunderbird, open a local html document, etc. I get the "FF is already running..." error. This only occurs when FF is already open and I just want another window; if FF is not open, the external program fires up a new instance of FF with no problem. Further, it does not happen if I click File -> New Window.
Also, I have 3 machines that upgraded from Firefox 3.6.whatever (the latest before 4.0) and 2 machines that have FF 4 as their first installations of FF. This issue only comes up on the machines I upgraded.
I have tried disabling all add-ons. I've even tried starting completely over with fresh profiles. I always get the issue.

Bonjour,

    Help!

    hi
I had the same problem (update failed for normal user, update worked for administrator, but then normal user still got asked about installing the update even though it was already done).
Following the advice on http://kb.mozillazine.org/Software_update#Software_Update_not_working_properly worked for me, in particular to remove the update-related xml files.

  • "Firefox is already running" error while opening a Firefox Document

I am a web developer, so I decided to have different versions of Firefox in order to test my web pages.
    Thus I decided to install Firefox 3.6 in "C:\Archivos de programa\Mozilla Firefox\Firefox 3.6", Firefox 4 in "C:\Archivos de programa\Mozilla Firefox\Firefox 4" and Firefox 5 in "C:\Archivos de programa\Mozilla Firefox\Firefox 5".
Moreover, each version has its own profile. In 'profiles.ini' I moved the line 'Default=1' from 'default' profile to 'Firefox 5' profile.
Since then, if Firefox has started, when I try to open a Firefox Document (like .htm or .xml) from a folder, I get "Firefox is already running, but is not responding" error. But the fact is that Firefox is responding correctly. If I write the file's location in Firefox's location bar it works properly.
In the registry, the FirefoxHTML's open command is "C:\Archivos de programa\Mozilla Firefox\Firefox 5\firefox.exe" -requestPending -osint -url "%1". Is it rigth?

I don't have much difficulty with this problem. It's more of an annoyance.
    A ''frequent'' annoyance.
What I'll do is log in to a page that requires a secure connection, and when I'm finished, to complete the security, I always close the browser. Then, of course, I start the browser up again.
The problem is, ''Firefox is still shutting down'', and issues this error. Most of the time, I can wait 10 seconds, then start up fine.
'''So my question is,''' why the heck can't the process that detects that Firefox is still running do the waiting for me? Instead of popping up a message, "Firefox is still running", pop up a message, ''"Firefox is cleaning up from the last shut-down, one moment please"'', then start up again.
I hate to mention it, but none of Firefox's competitors have any problem with starting up too soon after a shut-down.

  • How can I stop from getting the "Firefox is already running" error message when trying to open links and FF has already been opened through a symbolic link?

I use symbolic links and program shortcuts as a way to easily open different Firefox profiles ie. one for casual/personal use and another for work. This works well, but I get the "Firefox is already running, but is not responding" error message if I try to open external links with FF as my default browser. FF is actually open and running fine, but I guess it doesn't acknowledge this fact because of how I'm originally starting the process.
I wasn't able to add the symbolically linked executables to the default program pane. Is there a way to bypass this error or other way to fix this?
The solution to the question linked below is what I'm using to open the different FF profiles.
    http://superuser.com/questions/255312/pin-same-app-multiple-times-in-windows-7

hello, this is probably happening when you run the default profile with the -no-remote switch.

  • I tried a fresh install and get "Firefox is already running" error

Win XP SP3. Links in web pages opened in Firefox were not working. I tried reinstalling latest Firefox version over existing version. Didn't help. Uninstalled Firefox, reinstalled; didn't help. Did a total uninstall including manually removing all Firefox files and folders. Rebooted in-between. Now I keep getting the error message "Firefox is already running ..." Tried the steps in the article in your database but no longer have a profile. Bottom line: can no longer install a working version of Firefox.

You probably did delete the Firefox profile folder, but didn't remove the profiles.ini file, so Firefox isn't able to find the old profile and displays misleading and confusing error message.
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/profiles.ini_file
    * https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Firefox+is+already+running+but+is+not+responding
You can delete profiles.ini to make Firefox create a new default profile or use the profile manager to create a new profile.

  • Firefox gives me an error and will not connect to the internet. How can I fix this?

I have uninstalled and reinstalled but Firefox will still not connect. It gives me the inital start error message of "not being able to connect" etc. I am able to use IE and there is no connectivity issues at all. How do I fix this? I really prefer Firfox!

AHA!!! I had the same problem with no answer so I started doing some research. Apparently people with McAfee and Norton were having similar problems so I started there. I opened my McAfee and went into the Web and Email Protection. Click on Firewalls; click on Program Permissions. Scroll down to find Firefox. If you're having the same problem I did, it will say blocked. Change to allow. That should solve it!! I wonder if MS paid McAfee!!?? Hope it helps!

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to install for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Whenever I try to open it, I get something like "Firefox is already running". HOWEVER, when I check my profiles folder... it is empty!

Exact message: Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system
This happened when I first booted up the computer (so I hadn't been running Firefox anyway).
    I already tried:
-restarting and shutting off. This does not help. However, the system felt the need to run an error check on one of the restarts, which turned up nothing. This might indicate something.
-Opening task manager. firefox.exe does not appear in the processes list.
-Using the help file. None of it seems to help since the profiles folder is empty. I can't run profile manager either.
-uninstalling and reinstalling. I STILL GET THE SAME ERROR. Furthermore, the profiles folder is still empty!
I am currently running a virus scan, so far nothing. IE seems to be unaffected.
EDIT: Latest version of Malwarebytes has turned up no threats.

Well, if the profile folder is empty, either its contents are somewhere else and hopefully you can put them back where they belong, or you lost your profile info. I don't know how could happen, though...
In any case, see this support article to know about managing profiles:

  • Firefox is already running, no applications found no parent lock

THe Browser crashed when attempted to open a new tab at Verizon site. Now Both my Beta and reg Firefox are showing the infamous pop-up message already running ..need to close it first etc. .But no apps running no processes running, no parent lock found just found in properties unable to permanently remove/change from read only but nothing indicating corrupted files!!
Included the last crash file folder marked 'pending' , Please tell me why this great browser has this recurring problem - I already had to create a new profile twice now and this time haven't migrated old files yet as the old profiles were supposed to work again after I changed their properties from read only !
this is very frustrating and stressful while doing online job searches . . and I now don't trust browser enough to utilize different browser profiles as a tool for college, or other !!

When do you get that error message?<br />
After you have run and closed Firefox or already the first time after you have booted Windows?

  • "Firefox is already running" error

I am running Windows 7 with 3 different user profiles, all of which run Firefox seamlessly, but one. I have tried the different options listed on the main forum for this; however, the issue persists. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the application, with no success. The only thing I did have problems understanding/completing was finding the profile for the one user>parent.lock file. I never found this file. I'm not sure, at this point, what else to do. I have run a virus scan and it's all good. Any suggestions? What am I missing here?
