Firefox stores strange temp files in appdata/local

I use Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.
When I go into my C:\Users\\AppData\Local directory I see lots of Temp-1, Temp-10 etc files, they all rise in numbers.
If I open them in notepad they say the following:
"firefox","3.6.3",""," *** Webpage Title ***"," *** Webpage Address ***","2010-06-16 20:27:08","2010-06-16 20:27:14"
They are around 6kB in size, but there are lots of them.
Why are they even there? Why aren't they being cleaned up because some of them are around 6 days old?
== This happened ==
Every time Firefox opened
== not sure

The format you typed here seems to be JSON. Firefox's own temporary files are located in AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxxx.default\Cache - and they don't have "Temp" in the name.
Could you paste one of the files here, along with the exact name and path of the file, so I can try to figure out what it is?

FLV files played by the Flash plugin are usually streamed and not saved to the hard drive.
They may be kept in the memory cache during the playing.

  • Firefox launching from temp folder after update

Not sure if this is completely normal or not, or if it's even a problem. After updating from 3.6.26 to firefox 10 my firefox, according to an antivirus log, kept launching from a temp directory like appdata\local\temp\(randomtextstring).tmp\nonlocalized\firefox.exe instead of its normal program files (x86)\mozilla firefox directory. Trying to delete history each time i'd get 10+ plugin-container.exe's popping up, forcing me to close firefox because it would just hang. I decided to just reinstall firefox 3.6.26 however I am still seeing that it is starting from a temp folder, even though the startup path is located at program files (x86)\mozilla firefox. firefox.exe in task manager is located in
program files (x86)\mozilla firefox, but according to the log I'm looking at it starts and exits from appdata\local\temp\(randomtextstring).tmp\nonlocalized\firefox.exe
Sorry if this seems like a stupid question, I'm just curious if this means it has not installed properly or if this is completely normal.

I reinstalled 3.6 after I was having problems with 10. I already tried another reinstall and it does the same thing.
Earlier I received a firefox message that a new version of 3.6 was available (3.6.26) so I upgraded. I saw then in the log that firefox was launching as firefox.exe moz-callback or something, so i decided just to upgrade to the newest version of firefox, that's when I started seeing it launch from the improper directory.
The log I am reading from simply shows ALL .exe's that have launched and closed in order, showing it's location path, and what program opened/closed it. The temp directory and the random text string.tmp file it shows it's launching from is a random folder created by firefox during the installing and setup process. Firefox itself starts and exits perfectly fine and doesn't continue running in the background. I'm thinking it's either a logging problem with the AV's execution history log or something was wrong during installing, even though it happens each time I reinstall.

  • I have changed cache location but FF4 continues to use appdata/local/temp for storing actual files

    I use FF 4.0.1
I changed the location of the disk cache by going to
    about:cache
    and changing browser.disk.cache.parent_directory
    to a new location
yet FF4 still stores files at the old location

Thanks! Actually firefox DOES create a folder called Cache and fill it with lots of other folders. The problem is that when it comes to actual files, they land at the original appdata/local folder :(

  • When firefox trys to auto update, or I manually download the new version, or some but not all downloads off of the web, I get this error message. C:\Users\John\AppData\Local\Temp could not be saved, because you cannot change the contents of that folder.

First off, when firefox trys to auto update, it fails. It tells me to try and download the new version from mozilla's site. When I try to download the new version I get this: (C:\Users\John\AppData\Local\Temp could not be saved, because you cannot change the contents of that folder.)
This is the same message I have been getting when I try to download other things off the net. (When I use other browsers to download I dont have this problem)

    Please help.
    It is getting worse
Adobe flash player is crashing. I already uninstalled and re installed the latest ver. Also it is hanging randomly.

    Hi TedRayWesty,
When your computer “wake up” from “sleep” mode, the RAM will be able to respond to a wake-up event and calling files for program. There might be a calling failure. I searched about your temp folder name and the temp file name and seems like it is not a system
file and it is called by some third party software.
Try following steps to resolve your issue
Please perform a clean boot and see if the issue still persist.
Check the other contents in ScrC777.temp folder see if you could identify the software.(seems like some Security Software or Anti-Spyware)
Uninstall it and delete the temp folder see what happens.

  • Excessive .pdb files under \Users\sp_admin\AppData\Local\Temp

    30k+ folder/files in the \AppData\Local\Temp\ folder for my sp_admin, sp_service, sp_farm profiles.
My reading suggest this is developer debugging? Can someone confirm and provide some guidance on how to turn this off?
    Server SPF 2010
I have only used SP Designer and InfoPath and have no recall of turning something like this on.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Stunpals,
In most cases, it is safe to delete files in %temp% folder. In case of deleting mistakenly, I’d recommend using Disk Cleanup tool. If you have Desk Experience feature installed on your Server, please hold window key and click R, then input Cleanmgr.exe
and click OK. Disk Cleanup tool can used to delete unnecessary files on disk safely.

  • Firefox.exe located in appdata\local\mozilla firefox - why?

I do malware remediation for a company. In some recent investigations, I've found a few computers using firefox, and it is running from this location: c:\users\username\appdata\local\mozilla firefox\firefox.exe. (This location exists in versions 15.0.1, 16.0.2, and 19.0.2, and probably others)
Most computers run from program files\moz.FF\ - I don't believe that these users have changed the default install location. I have noticed that some of them had evidence of an update file running. All these users should be running as a local admin., and running Win7 Pro.
Working in vulnerability management, we notice anything that is "out of place." I ran several searches about this, and found nothing. If this is a legitimate file location and setup, FF should document it. A VirusTotal search for the file in this location shows no hits, but user votes show 4 out of 9 believing it is malicious (anonymous votes, so who knows if these people know anything or their motives). Any help as to why this location is used would be helpful...

This is the update location that is used when the background maintenance service is used to download and temporarily store the files before applying the update.<br />
You will probably see an updates.xml file and an updates folder in each of the Mozilla Firefox folders with a log file.

  • Appdata\Local\Temp\Guest mean???

what this mean?? 8 is my user name of my computer..
    but why guest icon created??
    guest user can not login..right??
is there no connection with hacked my computer??
    hmm..can't insert image..

    Hi,
Yes, guest user can not login if not activated, guest account is created with the system installation, but it is disabled by default, I am not sure whether the computer is hacked, but I would really appreciate it if you can post a screenshot of the account
settings. Appdata\AppData\Local\Temp is a folder used to store temporary files, normally, there won’t be a Guest folder, what kind of file is there in your computer, a screenshot will be a great help to analyze this.

  • Install problem -- c:\users\ NAME \appdata\local\temp\7zS171C.tmp\setup.exe The dependency service or group failed to start

I use Win 8. I recently uninstalled Firefox from C: and am looking to reinstall it on F:
I downloaded the full install package from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/?utm_source=firefox-com&utm_medium=referral, but when I ran the install package, I got a pop-up window after the package extracted:
    c:\users\<NAME>\appdata\local\temp\7zS171C.tmp\setup.exe
The dependency service or group failed to start
    Any ideas?

hello mlind1, can you see if it works by right-clicking the setup file and installing it as administrator?

  • SCCMReporting.log growing under %AppData%\Local\Temp

Tried to lookup this from the net, but couldn't find anything.. so the problem is that my reporting services account on the reporting services point is having this logfile called SCCMReporting.log under %AppData%\Local\Temp and it consumes 30GB of disk
space... Any idea where this all is coming from or how to disable the entire log? Everything is working fine on the reports.

Already tried searching the registry, no go.
After stopping reporting services service, I could delete the file and obtain the used space but when the service is started again, the logfile starts growing.
grab a copy of the logfile whilst it's still small, so you can analyse it

  • Why does firefox need to be closed to delete cookies & temp files

Only firefox seems to be this way -- under Windows, when I run a cleaner to delete temp files and cookies, firefox temp files and cookies can't be deleted unless firefox is closed. Can't this be fixed?

Other browsers don't seem to have his problem. i enjoy be being able to click on one item and having things cleared without fuss or bother. I'd prefer not to auto delete with each close nor do I want to have to manually hunt down with Ctrl+Shift+Del. I'm aware of those options. I was wondering why firefox still worked that way. Definitely a disadvantage for me using it. reminds me of the story:
A guy goes into a store to buy a suit and the clerk gives him one to try on:
Guy, "Hey one sleeve is longer than the other."
Clerk says, "Just shift your shoulders like this and it will look fine, see."
Guy, "But the pantlegs are uneven."
Clerk, "Well, just shift your weight onto one hip and, yes, see it looks fine."
Guy, "But the collar rides low on one side."
Clerk, "Here, hold that side in place with your chin against your chest like you're holding a violin. Voila!"
These accommodations go on for bit and the guy, somewhat exasperated but worn down, buys the suit. He wears it out of the store and down the street with his chin clamped to his chest, and one leg sort of dragging and his shoulder cocked, etc.
Two doctors walk past him and one says, "Oh that poor fellow," and the other says, "Yes, but he sure had a nice looking suit."
