Duplicate vs. Save As

In the new keynote the 'Save As' is been replaced by the 'Duplicate' function.
Therefore there is a extra handling or two,  when you use a old presentation as a base and want to save it into an other folder.
Difference:
In the early days:
- open presentation
- select save as
- select folder
- rename
Today:
- open presentation
- select duplicate
- close old presentation
- select copy
- select save or cmd+s
- select folder
- rename
I like to work effectifly, therefor would like to have the Save As option back.
What's your opionion?

Welcome to the club,  There is a good bit of chatter on the board wanting the same thing for Pages as well.  (lookout, there is also a lot of well-meaning but zealous folk that are going to try and convince you that the new way is the best way).   Be sure to tell Apple Feedback http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

  • Why duplicates from Save As?!!

What's happened to the Save As command - one of those I use(d) most often. Why do I get Duplicate instead? That's nuts!
How can I reinstate SaveAs across the board. (Thankfully Microsoft kept it in Office)

In the keyboard preference pane, under "keyboard shortcuts" click on the item "Application Shortcuts". Now click the little plus at the bottom of that list and type "Save As..." (Without the quotes) Then click in the shortcut box, and hold "command-shift-s" (the good old save as... shortcut)
You have to reopen open applications for the changes to take effect.
Now Save As... will be the default, and the silly Duplicate option sits underneath without a shortcut.
Accidentally, in Mountain Lion, there is also now an option in the general preferences called "Ask to keep changes when closing documents" This gives the "dont't save.." prompt back to further restore normality.

  • Both "Save As..." and Duplicate are missing from file menu

Just upgraded and am running OS X 10.8.2 and Keynote 5.3...  The file menu has only Close, Save, Revert to Saved, Export in that section.  Pressing the option key doesn't change duplicate to Save As... since Duplicate is missing as well.  When I press shift-command-S i get an error sound and option-shift-command-S does nothing...  Every other mac app is working fine.  Obviously, I need some help.

Thanks for the response.  I got a fix for it.  Went to another account on the mac and keynote had the proper file menu options listed.  Under library/Preferences I trashed all the iWork related plist and the Cache file--Rebooted and all was back in order.  Wish I could say I figured this out all by myself, but Apple support walked me through it.  FYI if you run across anyone else with this type of issue.

  • Why does Apple say that Numbers can open and save Excel files, when in actuality, it can only open .XLSX files and only Export to Excel (not save-as excel)?

When attempting to open .XLS files in Numbers, the format is not recognized. When the format is .XLSX, the format is recognized. Why is it this way? It's still much more common for folks to have the .XLS file format on their excel files. Why would Numbers not be backwards-compatible?
Additionally, to state in the benefits of this program that one can save to 'Excel' is a little misleading. You can't save to anything except .numbers. Sure, you can export to Excel (with file extension .XLS, I might add), but you can't save or save-as.
Does anyone else see the irony in being able to export to .XLS but not be able to open an .XLS?
There is something to be said for clarity.
You can't expect folks to have Numbers and Excel on their systems, so how else are they supposed to open .XLS files in Numbers?
And I don't need to see another advertisement for NeoOffice or OpenOffice here, thanks. I'd actually like Numbers to be a little more sensible.
    That is all.

When the advertisements were written, there was no Lion so we were able to Save As Excel.
At thiqs time there is no longer Save As command under Lion but the feature is always available.
When your editing task is ended, you are free to use this scheme:
    File > Duplicate
File > Save and in the dialog you will have the option save as Excel.
Numbers isn't and I hope that it will not become an Excel editor.
Its resources contain a flag defining it this way.
I posted several times a script editing this resource.
This morning I'm not in a mood allowing me to do your duty.

    (1) The OP is technically correct - there is no direct equivalent of  "save as".   There is "save a version" and there is "duplicate".
    (2) So far it seems that to get the same effect as "save as" you need to create a "duplicate", then save the duplicate.  The duplicate will automatically be given a name like "docname.copy.pages", which can be changed to that desired.
    (1) nobody wrote about the technical aspect of the OP's question !
    But, you wrote something wrong.
There is a "Duplicate" item, a "Save a Version" item and there is a "Save…" item.
    (2)  The reproduced help page clearly state that the first step is to trigger 'Duplicate' For the second step, it's not clear. It seems that the ones writing the Help were not informed of the definite choices made by the developers. They wrote "Save As" but never was such an item. It was "Save As…" in which the ellipsis is an important component. At last, the developers defined two items : "Save…" and "Save a Version" ( at this time I'm running 10.6.8 so I can't check if this item has or hasn't an ellipsis).

  • How do I add "Save As" to the Pages drop down menu?

How do I add "Save As" to the Pages drop down menu?

It took me awhile but I found what I was looking for. This is posted at http://www.tuaw.com/2012/07/29/get-save-as-back-on-mountain-lions-file-menu-easi ly-and-without/
Option 1. Terminal.app If you are comfortable using Terminal.app, you can add a different keyboard shortcut this with one simple line. First, quit all your apps except Finder and Terminal. Then paste this command (as one line) into Terminal.app (and press Return):
    1
defaults write -globalDomain NSUserKeyEquivalents -dict-add 'Save As...' '@$S'
view rawdwrite-global-saveas.sh hosted with ❤ by GitHub
    That's it!
Launch TextEdit and open the 'File' menu and you should see "Save As..." back in its rightful spot with its original Command + Shift + S shortcut, as shown in the image above.
Aside: After you enter the 'defaults write' command, you will not see any confirmation that it was entered correctly. Terminal.app is a little terse sometimes. If you want to verify it from the command-line, enter this:
    defaults read -globalDomain NSUserKeyEquivalents
and look for "Save As..." = "@$s"; in the output.
Option 2. System Preferences.app If you would rather not use Terminal, it's still very easy to add the keyboard shortcut.
Launch the System Preferences.app, then open the "Keyboard" preference pane.
At the top you will see "Keyboard" and "Keyboard Shortcuts" – click "Keyboard Shortcuts" (labeled '1' below). Then in the list on the left side, click "Application Shortcuts" (labeled '2' below). Then click the "+" button (labeled '3' below):
Once you press that "+" button, a small window will appear asking you to enter the title of the menu item and the keyboard shortcut that you want to use.
Enter "Save As..." in the "Menu Title:" field, and then press the keyboard shortcut that you want to use. In the example below I pressed Command + Shift + S:
Note: It used to be true that you had to enter an actual ellipsis (which you can get by pressing Option+ ; on a US-English keyboard). However, when I tested this in Mac OS X 10.8.2, it worked with three consecutive periods.
Bonus Tip: Hide the "Duplicate" menu item.
In my original article I suggested that you also enter a keyboard shortcut for "Duplicate" and while youcan do that if you wish, you do not need to do that.
However, if you would like to hide the Duplicate menu item, you can do that. There are two steps: first, remap "Save As..." to Command + Shift + S (as shown above). Then the 'trick' is to remap "Duplicate" to Command + Shift + Option + S.
What you will have done is swap the keyboard shortcuts for "Duplicate" and "Save As..." which means that OS X will make "Duplicate" the optional command. If you open the "File" menu and hold down "Option" the "Save As..." command will change to "Duplicate"
(Thanks to TUAW reader 'rbascuas' for pointing this out in response to the original article!)
Important Addendum: "Keep changes in original document"
As we reported in August 2012, the "Save As..." command in early versions of 10.8 had an unexpected and likely unwanted side effect in Mountain Lion: it would save the changes in the new document (created by "Save As...") but would also save the changes to the original document.
However, Apple realized that users might not want that behavior, so in Mac OS X 10.8.2 they added an option "Keep changes in original document" which you can see here:
Option A: If you want to save the changes you've made in the document and then save the document with a different name, then make sure that the box is checked.
Option B: If you want your original document to stay as it was when you last saved it and create a new document based on the modified content of that document, then make sure that box is not checked.
If you do not see the 'Keep changes in original document' box, then the application is probablygoing to give you the "Option B" behavior, but if you are not sure, I would suggest choosing Cancel in the "Save" dialog, then copy and paste the contents of the document into a new file, and save the new file. I know that's several extra-and-less-convenient steps, but if you are worried about preserving the original document, better safe than sorry.
You could also save the file, duplicate it in Finder, and rename the new instance. Open old file and revert to previous save using 'Versions'.
Frankly,I wish that Apple had just left the "Save As..." command alone, but for some reason they didn't ask my opinion. That said, I'm glad that they brought it back in Mountain Lion. I would have paid $20 for that feature alone.
Note: This article was re-written and republished on 2013–02–21. The original process still works, but I wanted to update it to reflect some additional information.

  • Save As- for the dummies

Here is a clean way to retrieve Save As… feature in Pages
    --(SCRIPT Pages_save_a_copy]

    +++++++++
Save the script as a Script: Pages_save_a_copy.scpt
Move the newly created file into the folder:
    <startup Volume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Scripts:Applications:Pages:
Maybe you would have to create the folder Pages and even the folder Applications by yourself.
Go to the Scripts Menu, choose Pages, then choose “Pages_save_a_copy”
The script saves the frontmost document
in the native Pages format in a date_time stamped file.

    The Finder's Help explains:
To make the Script menu appear:

    Here is an other one.
Read carefully the explanations given at the very beginning, in French then in English.
With this one you master the time when you save. CAUTION, Autosave is unable to do it's duty when you work on a document open with the script so don't forget to ask the script to save from time to time.
    --(SCRIPT Pages_without_autosave]
    --=====
    L'aide du Finder explique:

Save the script as an application on the Desktop.
Drop a Pages doc icon on the application's one, open the document, duplicate it, save the original if it was created from a template,
rename the duplicate inserting a date_time stamp, create a text box store the pathname to the source folder and the short name of the original.
After that you may work upon the document. From time to time, click the script's icon to save the document
and replace it by a fresh replicate. So this one which was never saved will not be autosaved.
When you have finished to work upon the doc, save it as you did in the past.

  • Save as- for Dummies (Numbers version)

Here is a clean way to retrieve Save As… in Numbers.
    --(SCRIPT Numbers_save_a_copy]
    --=====
    L'aide du Finder explique:
    +++++++++
Save the script as a Script: Numbers_save_a_copy.scpt
Move the newly created file into the folder:
    <startup Volume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Scripts:Applications:Numbers:
Maybe you would have to create the folder Numbers and even the folder Applications by yourself.
Go to the Scripts Menu, choose Numbers, then choose “Numbers_save_a_copy”
The script saves the frontmost document
in the native Numbers format in a date_time stamped file.

    The Finder's Help explains:
To make the Script menu appear:
Open the AppleScript utility located in Applications/AppleScript.

    Here is an other one.
Read carefully the explanations given at the very beginning, in French then in English.
With this one you master the time when you save. CAUTION, Autosave is unable to do it's duty when you work on a document open with the script so don't forget to ask the script to save from time to time.
With this dedicated to Numbers script, the most interesting piece of code is the one used to grab the status of the document when we open it to be able to reset it after inserting the items storing the path to folder to save in and the doc shortname.
    --(SCRIPT Numbers_without_autosave]
    --=====
    L'aide du Finder explique:
    +++++++++
Save the script as an application on the Desktop.
Drop a Numbers doc icon on the application's one, open the document, duplicate it, save the original if it was created from a template,
rename the duplicate inserting a date_time stamp, create a table in a sheet to store the pathname to the source folder and the short name of the original.
After that you may work upon the document. From time to time, click the script's icon to save the document and replace it by a fresh replicate. So this one which was never saved will not be autosaved.
When you have finished to work upon the doc, save it as you did in the past.

  • Unable to save permission changes in templates in win 2012

    Hi,
PKI set up of (2003 and 2008) based Sub CA and 2003 based AD ( with schema version supporting 2008) is running in the enviornment. Now CA is migrating to 2012 setup. When i try to create template and make permission changes, it says " unable to save
permission changes. Directory object not found". When i duplicate and save the template with name change and wait for 10-15 min and then open that template again and make permission changes, it works.
Just wanted to know if this is because of some feature issue and will it get resolved if AD is upgraded to 2012 schema.
    Thanks

Also, I checked with my AD person. They are also saying that it can be because of current DC architecture and may be a normal thing. Currently they have 2003 AD  and they will upgrade schema version for 2012 to see if that makes any change.
As Brian said, this is likely due to replication delays. Updating the
schema version is not likely going to resolve this. If you know how to work
around the issue then I wouldn't worry about it too much. Creating new
certificate templates should not be a frequent task.

  • HT4753 The old "save as" is missing.  How do I file one document in multiple files?

With Lion there is no "save as" so how can I file a document in two locations?
Also, how can I label and file a screen shot as a J-peg?
    Thanks for the help.

Duplicate and save the duplicate where you want to.
Open screen shot in Preview > name & save as jpg (double click it, should open in preview automatically)

  • Pages 09 (4.1) doesn't havea function (Save As)

Hi I just got pages 09 (4.1), but I usually use Microsoft Office Word. Does Pages have the MS Office's function ( Save as )? I can't find any. Help me.

As part of the change to automatic versioning in Lion, there's no Save As any more in Lion-compliant programs. Instead you'll see a Duplicate menu item under File, which you can use to create a copy.
Here's a good description of the changes:

  • Can someone explain the new "Document Model" for open/save?

Upgraded directly from OSX Snow Leopard Server to OSX Mountain Lion Server.
Obviously, there are quite a few changes in how the new OS deals with file management.
NOTE: For users with the non-Server version of Mountain Lion, when you enable RAID (Mirror) on your drives, you cannot create a Recovery Partition. So, no Time Machine backups, and "Revert To" has nothing to revert to. Nor does automatic backups work.
So, what should be my process for managing files? Specifically, what is my recommended workflow in place of "Save" and "Save As" so that I do not rewrite over existing files and can save copies with a revised file name to the same or a different directory?

If you Duplicate, then Save… asks for file name. ..."
An extra-step workflow that mimics the old "Save As" command. I think I understand this.
If you just Save a document you are working on, it saves just as it always did. However, if Versions is supported, Save forces a new version as opposed to the normal version interval. ..."
This is what worries me with users. This will re-write the original file with changes incorporated, yet OSX users (who have adopted the new Mountain Lion workflow on standard OS machines) may be under the impression that an older version could be recovered, which it cannot.
I need to have a clear understanding of what to explain to users to avoid issues with files "disappearing" when they believe they were protected by Versioning.

  • How do you save a Pages '09 document so that it can be read by an older Mac with Pages '08 loaded

I am trying out a version of iWork '09 but can see no way of saving a copy of documents in iWork'08 so that someone can read the documents who has not upgraded can read the document.

You can read one of the many threads about Save As… no longer in Lion. It has been replaced with Duplicate then Save… which gets you to the same dialog box. This screenshot is from Save in Numbers, but it looks the same in Pages. Check the box next to Save copy as & choose iWork '08 from the drop-down menu.

  • How to save as an older version in numbers for lion

my mom just got a new macbook air. we are sharing files on dropbox and everytime she opens a numbers file it does an autosave and then i can't read it because i have numbers '08. is there no way to back save to an older version of numbers in lion? sure, i get that i'll need to upgrade at some point but i'd at least like access to the files she's opned and maybe need to stop sharing them with her for a while until i upgrade my software. i tried walking her through the traditional save as process and we almost made each other mad because she wasn't seeing what i expected her to see in numbers' pull-down menu.

    One more time
    File > Duplicate
    File > Save…

  • Fontbook not saving resolved duplicates

Well finally upgraded to Tiger, followed all the recommendations, and despite some font conflicts and excrutiatingly slow performance until I turned off spotlight with spotless (just with my internal drive! Not even with my three huge externals connected), everything blazes and seems to be working perfectly after a 30 hour marathon of backups, system tests, and updates.
Everything it seems except Fontbook. I had some weird font conflcits, (I have over 3000 fonts installed and turned on because I need them in my print work), mainly a problem between arial and some graffiti font showing up in e-mail and Safari. I would go to Fontbook, disable all but the computer font, and all would be fine for awhile. I was even amazed at how Fontbook now seems to buffer your work, the little "working" wheel at the bottom right doesn't now tie up everything the way it did in Panther. I went through several times and worked out all the duplicates (clicked on the fonts with dots; chose "resolve duplicates" from the edit menu, and then the dots would disappear. I would then wait for the "working" wheel to finish (this sometimes takes hours with that many fonts, but a million times faster than Panther) and once it did, I'd close the program.
Yet the conflcits kept appearing on a reboot, and when I opened fontbook again, there they all were!! I've done this now about four times, NOTHING it seems is getting those font conflicts to stick, or be saved.
I did turn off some offending grafitti fonts manually, and hopefully those will be saved. I'm no longer getting the grafitti font, but now getting bold arial where I should be getting normal.
This might help: when I first turn on fontbook, certain collections are marked "off" but in ghosted grey, and then that disappears. So those collections are "on", that can't be it.
I remember in Panther too there was some way to see the duplicate fonts, so you could pick and choose which one to disable. I can't seem to figure out how to do that in Tiger either.
Other than that it's a vast improvement, and I'm sticking with it, please don't suggest any other program, because I tried them all under Panther, and they turned my system to molasses and I quickly uninstalled all of them. Fontbook will work brilliantly if I can just get those resolved duplicates to save, and possibly figure out how to view the duplicates again to be able to choose.
    Thanks!

P.S. I have to say I cannot believe how the entire system flies compared to Panther 10.3.9.

Okay, it's official. I tried a fifth time, this time I remembered how to see which fonts I was disabling (manually); selected all fonts, when they finally loaded, disabled all the "a" and "b" fonts with conflicts, and this time, to make sure, I waitied until the "working" wheel stopped after every single action, and then at the very end before I closed Fontbook.
I logged in and logged back out, and no conflicts as far as I could see but still I was getting bold arial on webpages where it should have been arial regular (google news.) Making it VERY hard to read.
So I opened up Fontbook again, AND ALL THE DUPLICATES I HAD RESOLVED WERE BACK AGAIN, everything I'd disabled WAS ENABLED AGAIN.
Thank God I hadn't gone through all the fonts, or I would have lost it.
So what is wrong with fontbook? Could it be cached font files are screwing up the disabling? I did some research and found that the disabled fonts are now kept in the font cache itself. So deleting it only enables all the fonts again, but that's EXACTLY the problem I'm having.
Why is Fontbook not doing what it is supposed to? I really don't want to have to actually delete font files from Fontbook itself but I think that might end up being the only answer to my problem. Or identify them and then move them out of the various folders. I've got hundreds of conflicts!
    Thanks for any help.

  • CS6 hanging during image save

    Windows 7, 64-bit, PS CS6 13.0.1
OK, I KNOW there's gotta be a discussion of this, but I can't find it in here, so.........
VERY intermittently, when I do a save (or possible a save as), on a .psd file, Photoshop hangs.  As in "0%" progress.  It's happened probably 3 or 4 times in the past year.  I DO have the "Save in Background" thing turned on.
This time, just to see if it was doing anything interesting, I opened the Task Manager and went into the Resource Monitor.  Yes, PS is using the normal 7 - 10 GB of memory (today, since I only have one image open, it's only using 7GB or so), and there's nothing else going on.  I have LR4 open, but the resource monitor says Photoshop isn't writing to any disk - or reading.  If I just sit there and don't touch anything, the system goes quiet and NOTHING's happening...
SO, I went to lunch and left it sitting at "0%", just in case it'd wake up.  Hour and a half later, it's STILL sitting there.
I went out and found a workaround, so it's no longer a big problem, but is there SOMETHING I should change or set or NOT do that'll prevent PS from doing this?  It doesn't crash, it's not hung (I can open and close and edit and do whatever, but THAT image is stuck).  Anyhow, I do a "Duplicate" and save the duplicate image, and that appears to work fine.
So, anything I should be doing differently?

Check your PDF settings and your document DPI. Sounds like you mess this part up...
