Firefox v14.0.1, WinXP, changes window order on FF restart

A similar question was asked about 4 months ago, with no confirmed answer: after a FF 14.0.1 restart (say, after a crash or when the Firefox task is terminated from Task Manager), the ORDER of the restored windows is different than it was at shutdown.
In some cases it appears the first window (the one at the bottom of the Windows taskbar display for FF windows) at restart is that which was the active window when Firefox stopped. Otherwise, the order can sometimes seem unpredictable.
(Let's say I have 5 FF windows open, each with a list of specific tabs, and assume they are shown as the taskbar in a popup as:
5
4
3
2
1
What I want is for FF to behave as it used to following a crash or restart, and PRESERVE this order, instead of transforming it to, say,
5
4
2
1
3)
Surely this should be the default behavior? If not, how I can I remedy this?
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
The session information is [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.sessionstore.interval by default saved every 15 seconds]. The active window is saved as '''selectedWindow''' in [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Sessionstore.js sessionstore.js]. If for ex. we change the active window but Firefox is force closed before the next 15 secs the information may not be updated. Please note that this is not a technical explanation, just a thought :) One way you could check is by reducing the time of '''browser.sessionstore.interval''', change to a new Window, wait for the time to elapse and force close Firefox.

In Firefox 4, how do I change the order of plugins on the Add-ons Plugins manager page? I turn Shockwave Flash on only when I want to watch a video and then turn it off to prevent screen freezing, and so I want it to PUT it and KEEP it at the top of the list.

Hit Ctrl+0 (That's a zero, by the way). I'm not sure if it will work, but hey, that's the first thing I would try.

You changed the order of the menu for "Open in a new window" or "Open in new Tab", How can I change it back? Or how can I omit any reference to tabs? I do not use them at all.

You can use the Menu Editor add-on to rearrange or remove menu items - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/menu-editor

  • How do I change the order of context menu items in Private Windows?

In the context menu that appears when I right-click on a link, I prefer to have "Open Link in New Window" at the top of the menu instead of "Open Link in New Tab". I have added code to userChrome.css to make that switch:
    #context-openlink {
    -moz-box-ordinal-group: 1 !important;
    #contentAreaContextMenu > * {
    -moz-box-ordinal-group: 2;
Firefox version 20 added Private Browsing Windows. The above code still works for the non-Private windows, but doesn't affect the Private Windows, so in those I still have "Open Link in New Tab" at the top of the context menu, and "Open Link in New Private Window" as the second item. Is there a way to change the order of these menu items in Private Windows?

Clarification: In the code snippets above, the "1."s are supposed to be pound-signs; they got auto-reformatted incorrectly.

  • Firefox changes the "order" of my multiple display from 4-3-1-2 to 2-1-3-4

When my PC starts, the "order" of my monitors in Control Panel | Display | Screen Resolution is: 4-3-1-2
After I start Firefox, it changes the "order" to 2-1-3-4
I have to go into the Control panel and Change the appearance of your displays back to 4-3-1-2
I'm using Windows 8.1 with Firefox as my default browser. Everything is up-to-date.
I've had this problem for a long, long time, I've just never gotten around to seeking help for it. Always having to go into the Control Panel to "rearrange" by monitors is a nuisance.
Any assistance to resolve this problem would be greatly appreciated!

I've never heard of something like this. But I suppose it's possible that it has something to do with hardware acceleration. Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
    Then perform these steps:
#Open Firefox ''Options'' window (''Preferences'' on Mac or Linux) as follows:
#* In Firefox 29.0 and above, click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]] and select ''Options'' for Windows or ''Preferences'' on Mac or Linux.
#* In Firefox 28.0 and previous versions, click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
#In the Firefox Options (or Preferences) window, click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select ''General''.
#In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
#Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
    * [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
    * [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]

  • Firefox Mobile changes bookmark order after sync

I've got all my bookmarks arranged on Firefox desktop into various folders and there are also various bookmarks in the Unsorted Bookmarks folder that are sorted by date added. I've connected to Firefox sync and synced the desktop. I've then installed firefox mobile on android and connected that to Firefox Sync. This then syncs all my desktop bookmarks on to Firefox mobile. However when I go back into Firefox desktop the order of my unsorted bookmarks has been changed and ordered by name.
I assumed that either Firefox Desktop would be the master and everyother device synced with this would follow the same order or that the first device linked (the desktop) would be the master. However Firefox mobile seems to sync the bookmarks, change the order and then sync this new order with the desktop.

yesterday I did what you suggest,
This morning I turned on my computer and open firefox, you bookmarks toolbar back chaotic.. you can see my snapshot
so chaos occurs bookmarks toolbar every firefox is opened and synchronize.
although today I fix bookmarks toolbar, tomorrow morning when I open firefox, it would be chaos again

You would have to restore the bookmarks from an older JSON back if the recent backup that Firefox uses to rebuild the bookmarks when you delete the places.sqlite file is already corrupted.
The name of a JSON bookmarks backup file includes a total item count (includes folders and separators) and an hash value to prevent saving the same backup more than once.
    *bookmarks-YYYY-MM-DD_<item count>_<hash>.jsonlz4.
So you can check if there is a sudden unexplained change in the item count.

  • I get error messages frequently when changing windows or starting firefox

this is the fourth time i'm trying to contact you guys. i keep getting error messages when i changed windows saying oops this is embarassing... etc. try again button works sometimes, sometimes not, if not have to restart, erases my bookmark menu tabs which i LOVE, and sometimes they come back. i love you guys so much more than internet explorer, but i have had to use internet explorer now almost all the time because of this problem. also, if you could make it so that one can delete blocks of unwanted email (like click the first unwanted email and the last one and then control/shift like in the old days) that would be AWESOME, but i have found that i can't do this in other applications anymore either so maybe it's something windows operating systems took out as they make new versions, but if you guys could create it in your email site wow, everyone would LOVE YOU!!!!!! so many do already, all my IT guys use you and my friends who are halfway computer literate. i hope you can help me with my problem, also i think i read you partner with clients for their websites to improve/add features. is that true? i'd love to do that if so, i'm using go daddy now, and haven't done half the stuff i want to do on my site. thank you for your positivity and you guys make up for those nasty virus makers who wreck people's lives, businesses,.. using their brilliance to harm people, it so sad. thank you again. i hope this goes through this time. i think i'm going to copy and paste it this time on Word so I can mail it to you if i screw up again!
    thank you again so much!

  • How do I change the order of Bookmarks in Firefox Mobile?

For Firefox Mobile (v4), I can't figure out how to change the order of bookmarks.
    What am I missing?

Sorry, there's no simple way to sort bookmarks in Firefox for mobile.
If you use Firefox Sync to synchronize bookmarks with Firefox on your computer, then you can move bookmarks around in the "Mobile Bookmarks" folder on your computer to re-order them on your phone.

  • Why the hell you've now decided to change the order of the "Open link in a new window" and "Open link in a new tab" options on the link menu???????????????

Why, oh why have you now decided to change the order of the link menu options? People were so used to it that I bet nobody even look at the menu, they just go for it as I do and many of my friends does!! Why change something that works so fine and has been since ever??

I like the new arrangement because I open new tabs much more often than I open new windows. It makes much more sense than the old way.

It would be very useful to be able to change an order of open windows in the Visual Editor by dragging its tabs. Thanks in advance.

You can't change the order of the photos in the built in photos app. There are other apps that give you much more flexibility than what the photos app allows. You may want to do a search in the App Store for one that suits your needs.
Read this to learn about the photo sorting order on the iPad. The gist of the article is this .... Copied from the article.

You need to export the Camino bookmarks to an HTML file, and then import that file into Firefox.
    # In Camino, on the '''File '''menu select '''Export Bookmarks'''
    # In the '''Format''' dropdown menu select '''HTML''' then click on the '''Export''' button
    # Import the HTML file into Firefox using the procedure in the [[importing Bookmarks from an HTML File]] article

I used to have my toolbars arranged in the following order (top to bottom): menu, navigation, tabs. Now, after resetting Firefox, my toolbars are in a different order: menu, tabls, navigation. I want them back in the original order. I'm using Firefox 16.0.2.
Note: the add-on, DragMyToolbars, has not been updated to work on my version of Firefox. I have the "Old Firefox data" file from the resetting.

  • Bug 769476 - sync from Mobile Firefox (smartphone or tablet) will disorganize the order of bookmarks on desktop

    Hello,
Normally, I've been using Firefox sync on desktops (home and at work, all running on Arch Linux and one Windows desktop) until now only, without any bigger problems.
I've bought an tablet last week (Nexus 7, with Android 4.2 after update).
After I installed the Mobile Firefox (version 18 was just fresh) onto the tablet, have linked via my account to the sync.
After initial sync finished, I noticed first disorder of my bookmarks on my desktop, without knowing more about the source of the problem at first.
Have been observing and performing various tests the last days, and have come to an conclusion, that the source of this is the Mobile Firefox on my tablet.
Every time I had to restore (fortunatelly I'm performing backups of these) my bookmarks on my desktop to regain the order I want.
I have to disable the sync on the Mobile Firefox in order to stop this bookmarks disorganization.
Afterwards, the problem of bookmarks disorder on my desktops is gone, just until I reenable the sync on Mobile Firefox, then it gets broken again.
By disorder/disorganization of bookmarks I mean this:
    1. normal working status as desired when Mobile Firefox ain't synchronizing:
    A
    B
    C
    D
    E
    F
    2. broken status after Mobile Firefox sync. enabled (the order may change randomly):
    A
    C
    E
    F
    D
    B
-- but on the tablet's Mobile Firefox, the bookmarks order is being held as far as I've noticed.
I've already tried to clear my entire Mobile Firefox profile, in order to get rid of all Mobile Firefox settings and bookmars, to start on the tablet with a clean shield. Haven't helped, it always breaks the bookmarks order on the desktops again once newly reconnected via sync.
Unfortunatelly, I don't have no other tablet device at hand to test in elsewhere, thus to confirm or deny, whether this is lonely problem on my table only, or a globale Mobile Firefox problem.
Is this some sort of Mobile Firefox bug?
Any other ideas about what to check/change in order to fix this problem?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    ---- update 20130115 ---
Have just tried to enable the sync even on my smartphone (HTC Desire S, Android 2.3.6), where I used the Mobile Firefox sync before, but have disabled the sync few weeks ago (that time using ver. 17), as the Mobile Firefox started to trigger the sync very often with these new versions, and with one core CPU smarphone, it always took quite long to finish.
Since then, I was forced to perform Factory Reset due to some another unrelated problem.
Afterwards, new version 18 was released, I still wansn't using the sync on the smartphone.
But after I opened this question, just to test it I've reenabled the sync on the smartphone (having already ver.18 installed), waited for the sync to finish on both, smartphone first, following on the desktop, and what a surprise, the bookmarks order did screw up again.
Thus, it's not just my tablet affected, but smartphone is as well.
Now just to differentiate, whether perhaps my sync account with my data is broken somehow, or if the Mobile Firefox sync is indeed the the reason even globaly, not just with me?
    But how to differentiate it?
Shall I perhaps open an bug at the bugzilla.mozilla.org ?
have just discovered, that bug already reported https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=769476

Windows 7, Linux, and Android each sort Alpha-Numeric strings differently.
Linux ignores beginning spaces and symbols.

in Firefox can not see the Downloads window, in the jump in the boot to be seen - the download speed
Downloaded much and now can not see how to fix it?

I hate the new downloads-in-a-tab scheme. This was an unnecessary change in my book (if it aint broke, don't "fix it").
So in order to get it back, I performed the about:config browser.download.useToolkitUI change, but now all I get is a blank download window that pops up every time I download something.
Is there something else that I need to do? I've checked the change and it was saved, but it didn't resolve my issue as much as it just caused me a new issue.

  • GNOME3 windows order

    Hi there,
I have suffered from this for a while. After some in-depth search, I still couldn't solve the problem:
when I close a window, the expected window in focus should be the last window shown before the closed one. This is what all popular window-based desktop environments do (kde, gnome2, microsoft windows...). But this doesn't work in my archlinux gnome3. Some random window was in focus and at front of my eyes.
Also, alt-tab is weird. The rotational order of windows is in chaos.
For example: suppose I was in firefox, and had another terminal window. Then I launched thunderbird. Then I pressed alt+tab, I thought I should change to firefox again, because that was the last place where I was. But, unexpectedly, I might end up in the terminal window.
    Anyone can help?
    UPDATE:
another example: when I type 'gvim' or 'gedit' from gnome terminal, the new window appears but quickly hides into the background, leaving another window in focus.
