Firewire slot broken?

Hi,
i think my internal FW card is gone, i need help to confirm that.
Yesterday i connected my macbook pro 15" to an older G4 that i'm using as fileserver.
I put my macbook pro in Target Mode and i plugged FW cable (the same cable used everyday to connect drives). Nothing happened also trying to unplug and plug it again. Ok maybe my g4 is so old i thinked...
Reboot my macbook pro since then takes about 5-7 minutes, when to Finder i see istat pro on top is working but i can't click nothing. Looking in console, after my mac turn to life, i see
system_profiler[398]: SPFWR ERROR: FireWire bus may be unstable. Other FireWire devices may be present.
In Apple System Profiler under Firewire > Unable to list device
I tried to restart and reset SMC, zap pram, repair permissions and finally unload / reload related IOFW kexts but nothing.
Now after some reboots it doesn't work anymore, no more error logs. The FW port is disappeared and hangs too of course.
Now in Apple System Profiler under FW ... No ports
It seems to me an hw problem , i can live without my FW port but what i really want to know is that should be a sign of a progressive painful agony or not...
Consider that apple replaced my logic board on this macbook pro on late 2008 - graphic card broken.
you can understand that a new logic board (out of warranty period) is not worthy in this case...
Someone can suggest to me a deep test on it?
thanks in advance

A similar thing has happened to me on 2 different MBPs (one 2.16 C2D and the other a 2.4 C2D, 4 and 3 years old respectively) in different places in the last week. Both have been using external FW800 hard drives, and then suddenly after a restart the drives refuse to power up from the FW bus. Restarting again not only didn't fix it, but caused the system to become unresponsive after start-up (could move the mouse, but couldn't click or use the keyboard). Startup programs would launch so it wasn't totally hung, but no input devices fully worked (tried both the built in keyboard/trackpad and a external Logitec keyboard/mouse combo - same results). Booting into "safe mode" (holding shift) returned the computer to functionality, but FW obviously still didn't work (and the keyboard obviously worked as it registered the shift key-press to enter safe mode)
I also tried booting off the 10.6 install DVD which worked fine, but Disk utility wouldn't recognize any drives attached to the FW bus (400 or 800) while on another iMac the same process recognized a FW attached device. As well, when I ran System Profiler from the install DVD on the MPBs, it said that it was "unable to list FireWire devices", whereas everything listed fine on the iMac.
In the end, removing the FW kexts from System/Library/Extensions allowed the computer to boot up normally and everything work (keyboard/mouse problem gone - startup was also a bit faster) but of course the FW bus is not functional anymore.
So, it seems to me to be a hardware issue as well, but that it's happened on 2 isolated computers within 4 days (after both using FW every day for 3-4 years) seems like too big a coincidence. I can't think of any software update that was installed recently, but I'm suspicious that there is some software issue that fried the FW controller. Anybody else having this issue?

  • How to add more firewire slots

I have an iMac G5 Rev. A that has 3 firewire slots in th back. It's a pain in the butt to have to move the iMac every time I need to plug something in. Right now, all 3 slots are being used, and to connect my flash drive I have to go to the back of the iMac, disconnect something, plug the flash drive in and reverse the process when I'm finished with the flash drive.
Is there a splitter that anyone knows about that I can use? Any alternatives such as an external drive with extra firewire plugs to use when I upgrade to Leopard?
    'Preciate your help!

The iMac G5 has 2 Firewire ports and 3 USB ports on the back. Are you sure you aren't talking about your USB ports? Flash drives are USB, at least I haven't seen any Firewire flash drives myself ...
There are USB extension cables - that would allow you to plug the male end into the back of the iMac and then leave the female end free to plug your flash drive into. You wouldn't have to reach behind your iMac every time that way. I think even Staples carries them.

  • RAM is not showing up, is slot broken?

I have a macbook pro mid 2009 running Lion (upgraded twice). Right now, there are two sticks of 4gb RAM in the computer, however, if I go to about this mac, system profiler, or activity moniter, they all show that I have only 4gb, while I should have 8 (photoshop is running slower than it should, so obviously one stick is not being used.)
After testing a few times, I have found:
The not functioning slot is the bottom slot, If I try to start up my computer with a stick of RAM in there only, my macs screen stays dark and beeps periodically along with the "sleep" light flashing. However, if I just use the top slot, my computer works fine.
I know its not the RAM sticks themselves because i've also tested with 1 and 2 gb ram, so I suspect my ram slot is broken somehow. It looks fine, the ram goes in and everything, but obviously something's wrong.
I ran hardware test and it said everything was fine, but still only showed 4 gb total ram and told me theres nothing in the other slot.
So is my RAM slot just disconnected or something/broken? Can it be fixed? thanks

My suggestion is to take it to Apple to get a quote for fixing the bottom slot.
It might cost a lot and they might suggest that they should change your logic board since it's built in.

  • Is My ExpressCard Slot Broken?

    Hi,
I just purchased a Macbook Pro a week ago and also a V640 Verizon Data Card. I had never had a reason to use my ExpressCard slot in previous Powerbooks but I found that it's pretty simple. Push it in and it locks with a reassuring click, push again to release and it pops out. Just now however, I bumped it and it slid out. I locked it in again, it works fine, but if I just PULL slightly on it out it comes, without pushing it in first. When I then reinsert it, I must push in and release it because inside it is still locked. Then I push in again and it locks as it should. But again if I give it an ever so slight tug out it comes once more. I guess this could be a safety feature to protect the sensitive pins, or is it broken? Again, the data card still connects. I broke it didn't I? I spilled a coffee on my last one...Thanks.

I posted to determine if that was necessary. Turns out it wasn't, but I had a case to return to the Apple Store anyway. Don't believe it when they tell you the new Macbooks won't fit in your old Brenthaven Powerbook case. Mine fits quite snugly but is certainly useable, and my old case seems like it will last forever.
Back to my initial question, the Apple genius took my new V640 card and inserted it into his Macbook Pro, gave a gentle tug, and out it came. He was surprised too, but apparently that is how they are designed (by the way the card is brand new, and doesn't appear damaged in any way).
The best news is that after I posted last night I noticed the power button was sunken down into the case just a little bit. I don't know how it happened as I know only a gentle push and release is necessary to power on. To me it's one of the cool design features of the Apple laptops. The store had one top case assembly in stock and replaced it in about an hour for me.
I am travelling so I was very lucky to get all that accomplished so quickly. So I just want to say thanks Templeton.:)

  • My power mac g4 was working fine i hit a key and it shut down and now it has the symble of the firewire slot floting around the screen and i can not get it to start back up

my power mac g4 was working fine i hit a key and it shut down and know it has a symble floting around the screen like the firewirs symble and ot wont turn back on how do i fix it

It does sound like the T key is stuck.
One way to test to see if the keyboard is at fault is to disconnect the keyboard, then start up the Mac.
Note - on that model, you can force a shutdown by holding in the power button (the one on the front panel of the machine) for 8 to 10 seconds.
You can also force a restart by pressing the small convex (bulges out slightly) button under the power button on the front panel (it's the one on the left).

  • No firewire slot & final cut pro

hello everbody, I ve just bought a new macbook with a final cut express and I have a sony HDR HC3 and it can only connect through firewire are there any convertors from firewire to USB 2.0 you know off or any other solution which could be helpful to download my videos directly to final cut on my firewireless macbook
Thank you very much for your help guys

I see what you mean... What I meant to convey was that there are no Firewire to USB adapters that actually work due to the fundamental difference between USB and Firewire. I have no idea how these companies can claim to sell them, but you can be assured that FCE will not work with these "so-called" adapters. Maybe the reason that they are called adapters and not converters is that they simply modify the shape of the plug, but not the actual integration of the two...
If anyone in this forum has successfully used a "converter," I would be grateful to know and will happily admit defeat. Until that time I maintain that such a device is not yet possible or has been marketed.

  • LaCie as scratch disk, but only one Firewire slot

Would like to use my external LaCie drive as scratch disc, however, have only one Firewire connection on my MacBook Pro? Do I need a hub to be able to additionally connect my video camera? Or, else? Or just log everything to my hard drive (as long as I have enough space)?
    Thanks,
    Alex

For the MacBookPro, you can connet your camera to MBP's firewire port, then buy an eSATA ExpressCard and connet to an eSATA storage - scratch disk.
Check with CalDigit, they have external RAID solution, from two disk RAID to 8 disk RAID solution.
We have a 2-bay RAID disk from them.

If you buy their storage, it does come with the ExpressCard
which is compatible with MBP or a controller card (PCI-e or PCI-x), you do not have to pay anything extra.

  • Lenovo G580 2nd Ram slot broken

My laptop was preinstalled with 4gb and recently I brought a new 4gb ram to add to the computer but as I inserted it in the 2nd slot it still detects it as 4gb. I tried numerous times and also tried swapping them to find out and I know it isn't the new ram because Windows detects it on 1st slot but it's only when I put a ram in the 2nd slot that it has errors. My Windows is 64 bit so it should be able to use more memory. I don't know whether it could be the snap-in or something is wrong with the memory in the hardware. Could I get this fixed from a store or some remedy to get it to read?

Nevermind everyone. I feel so stupid right now. Turns out after hours of messing around with the ram slot I forgot that I needed to actually push down the ram into the slot rather than just inserting into place. I solved the problem myself so it turns out it wasn't a bad slot after all.

  • RAM slot broken / plastic tabs on RAM slot broke off

I was a little rough when I installed my RAM and broke the plastic tabs/locking mechanism on my RAM slot. A RAM card can still fit in the slot but it just doesn't lock in. I'm considering these options:
    1) keeping the RAM in position with a tiny piece of electrical (or other heat resistant) tape. And I could check on it every few days to see if it melts or anything.
    2) having a technician go into the inaccessible RAM slot and just upgrade that. Is that possible? How much would something like that cost?
    or
    3) installing a new logic board, which is what one MAC store diagnosed for me. But that would cost $575 (part) + $100 (labor) which I'm very reluctant about because that is way too much money for me.
If the tape method seems worth a try, I'd love to do that since it's the easiest and cheapest. Any advice would be great. Thanks so much.
    Amy

I broke the tabs by removing the ram chip after trying to force it. In the set up guide that came with the computer the instructions failed to mention that the clips should be in the open position before installing. I bought some "cold Weld" like a two part epoxy and glued the composite clips right to the stainless steel "wing" of the clip. It seemed to work just fine. the chip clipped in place but system profiler does not recognize it at all.

  • Lumia 800 Sim card slot broken - Any suggestions?

    Hi all,
I've had my lumia 800 for a year now and loved it, but unfortunately I dropped it on the corner closest to the sim card slot, and it appears that the clip which stops the sim card holder from springing up has been damaged so it won't stay in place anymore and pops up. This obviously means that the phone doesnt detect the sim and turns off.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do? I'm considering whether or not I could remove the spring that keeps forcing it to pop up, otherwise it might have to be a tape-down job on my beautiful phone
    Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately we aren't allowed to discuss any internal self repairs due to this forums rules so you are on your own with the spring question.
What you could do is contact a Nokia care point and ask for a repair quote. It's likely to be expensive as the whole body would need to be changed. The best option is probably to claim on your insurance, if you have a policy that covers you for accidental damage.

  • MSI Big Bang XPower II - Firewire and PCI issues

    Hi all,
yesterday i recieved my new MSI Big Bang XPower II and got some really strange issues:
First of all ill let you know my hardware:
MSI Big Bang XPower II (BIOS v1.4) new
    Intel I7 Extreme 3960X new
    G.SKILL 64GB RAM Kit 1600 new
Palit NVIDIA GTX 680 - 4096 near new
3 x RME Soundcards used but okay
7 x WD 2TB SATA where 3 are OS Systems and 4 are Storage used but okay
Be Quiet Dark Power 1200W new
    1 Problem:
There is absolutely no Firewire available. I tested the onboard connection (which is at the backplate) and i also tested the extension connection with a additional firewire slot. Also it seems that wether Windows nor Linux is recognizing the firewire at all. The strange thing is that i recieved this new board after i send the first one back to my reseller with exactly the same problem!!! I also take a look into the BIOS if there is any option i need to activate but as far as i see there is nothing to set for 1394?
    2 Problem:
As you can read above i use my GTX680 and all 3 RME Soundcards each with one PCI Slot. But some of the slots are not working fine. If i, for example mount my GTX680 to Slot 1 and want to mount my first RME Souncard to slot 4 (2 and 3 are covered under my GTX680) its not working. If i try it in slot 6 for example, the soundcard works fine.
    BUT:
The slot 4 is not damaged cause if i set my GTX680 to slot 8 and retry my RME Cards in slot 4 its working...
    Never had that before!
I connected the 24pin ATX and both 8pin connectors (the 4pin additional connector for the graphics is not used).
Would be nice if someone guiding me through the dark

With so many components and shared resources, you are gambling with IORQs and I/O addressing space.
Mmmhmm i dont thought about getting interrupts, MSI is offering the board with that configration/features and if there is one user out who try to use the board near to the fullest it should of course work or not?!

  • Thunderbolt to Firewire Adapter & New Network Interface Message

I am using the new Thunderbolt to Firewire Adapter. Why is it that every time I use it, I get the following message:
"A new network interface has been detected. The Thunderbolt FireWire Slot 2 network interface has not been set up. To set up this interface, use network preferences."
All I want to do is mount external hard drives that don't have Thunderbolt ports to my iMac, via Thunderbolt because I am using the iMac's single Firewire port for something else. The drives do successfully mount, but why do I keep getting this message whenever I connect them again?

I have no doubt what you say to do would get rid of the message for me. However, both myself and an Apple Store employee think it is odd that the message comes up in the first place. We're both curious about it, and he's going to look into it.
We tested it on a computer at the store, and found that it happens on Lion too.

  • Using Firewire Adapter With iPod Classic 80gb

I have an iPod Classic, 80GB. I have a car adapter that uses a firewire cord. The firewire plugs into the lighter and then the other end plugs into the iPod. Can I use the firewire even though the iPod came with the usb cord? Just wondering as the wall plug adapter that i have has the firewire slot, too.

The firewire plugs into the lighter and then the other end plugs into the iPod.
I'm not sure what you mean by that. No firewire cable I've ever seen plugs into the car's cigarette lighter socket.
What exactly are you trying to do? If you are simply trying to charge the iPod via the lighter socket, then a firewire connection has nothing to do with it.
