Fireworks CS3 - Slow down problems
Hi all
I recently installed Windows Vista Ultimate and also
Fireworks CS3 - Fireworks loads up fine but the problem arises when
i try to draw using a mouse on a new canvas. The screen flashes and
there is a massive delay while drawing (like the CPU is
struggling). Does anyone have a solution to this?
My pc -

2 x Raptors in RAID

* I have tried Fireworks on windows XP on same machine and
runs fine..

I don't know but I doubt it. It's a quad core processor
right? It seems
(from what I quickly read on AMD's site) to be a very similar
processor
to mine (Athlon X2 64 Dual Core 5200+) except for the number
of cores or
course but I don't think that would aversely affect
application
performance, even apps that don't support multi core procs.
Are your graphics card drivers current?

Hi folks,
I installed CS3 Web Premium last week. Not had chance to play
with it a lot as yet but I have come across one irritation already:
When I launch Fireworks CS3 it takes between 10 and 20 seconds from
the program loading on screen to being able to either open a file
or create a new file. Clicking anywhere (e.g. menus) while waiting
gives a 'Not Responding' error message in the window title bar.
I was wondering if anyone else has had these problems or
knows how I might improve the startup responsiveness.
I'm running CS3 under Windows XP with all patches installed
on a Dell Precision 390 workstation with 4GB RAM.
Thanks in advance,

Ok... that's 2 strikes against you right there... ;-) The
only thing
worse is if you had Norton Antivirus but I guess they're both
about
equally crappy (seriously).
First thing I would try would be to exclude the entire
Fireworks
application folder from VirusScan's real time check and same
for its
application data folder in Documents and Settings. Ideally, I
would
ditch Mcaffee and get a good antivirus like AVG or NOD32.
Both are very
light on resources and will not slow down your system. AVG
has a free
version but NOD32 is about the best antivirus money can buy
(it's not
that expensive). I've been running it for over a year now and
it's the
best I tried. I needed the lightest resources hungry AV
possible as I'm
a musician and run resources intensive software that needs to
work well
in real time.
In your case, the number of fonts is probably a greater cause
of your
slow FW startup time than McAffee. You really should invest
in good font
management software. There are free solutions you can look up
on Google
but the one I prefer is Extensis Suitcase (version 11 came
out
recently). A cheaper and very good alternative is FontExpert
from
Proxima Software which had a new version release recently.
Ideally, you should never keep no more than about 50-100
fonts directly
installed in your Windows font folder and should activate and
deactivate
fonts on a "as needed" basis using font management software.
More than
about 300 installed fonts (less on some machines) will
definitely slow
down your graphic apps startup time and Fireworks is
especially
sensitive to that. I manage over 5000 fonts (yes, that's 5
thousand)
with Suitcase but I never have more than about 75-100 fonts
installed/activated at once.
Some font management software also come with plugins for
certain apps
that will automatically find and load missing fonts when
opening a
document. Unfortunately, none come with one for Fireworks
AFAIK but
FontExpert has one for Illustrator and Suitcase as plugins
for both
Illustrator and InDesign. Both companies say they'll probably
produce
more so, if your purchase either, enter official feature
requests for
missing font loader plugins for Fireworks.
Suitcase has the best font matching algorithm and goes a lot
deeper than
just the font name to find a match which is very important
for text
heavy layouts in apps like Illustrator and InDesign (which I
both use
regularly as well) because minute differences in
hinting/kerning can
cause unwanted text reflows if you load the wrong version of
a given font.
In any case, you should see significant load time
improvements if you
dramatically reduce the number of fonts you have installed in
your
windows/fonts folder and getting more efficient Antivirus
software will
help your entire system's performance.
HTH!

Any security update slow-down problem occuring ???
hi all,
My macbk has slowed to a crawl on the net. connecting from one site to another takes up to 20 seconds. I've done permissions / onyx/ scripts/ reset safari & camino /cleared browser caches and each time it speeds up a bit but within a few minutes online it's slow again. hangs up initially at "looking for..." in the bottom bar and shows highlighted bar hung right before "www". OR at the "go to" / "contacting" stage at the same WWW
The only thing I can think that I did at about the time it began slowing down was , using software update (which I rarely use- normally download directly from the apple site, but got momentarily lazy!).
My Techtool pro is 4.2.1 and won't run on my intel apparently - or so it says in the dialogue box and when I try to download and install the incremental update it says it can't find where to install. so I am stuck with out it at the moment.
If it weren't so rare I would think I had a WORM. but that IS rare on a mac I think.
so thinking about possible linked problems with that security update.
anyone heard of any problems ?
I do have applecare, so if all else fails I can call them I guess

Program slow down / problem of memory optimization
hi all,
Here is my problem. I am using Labview 2011 and a NI acquisition board. In attachment are simplified VI codes I implemented to acquire analog signal and process the data. The main_VI.vi starts the RUN VI that performs data acquisition and data processing. In the RUN VI, I implemented a state machine because there are many sequential steps. The acquisition is done many times (see max iteration value) and for each acquisition, there is a processing. I used a queue structure to send data for processing in parallel. I also use a in-place element structure to manage the array.
For real data acquisition (from NI board), the program slows down after hundreds of iteration and when I exit the program, it seems the VI has to free memory because it takes few minutes to close the VI.
My questions are:
- Is the state machine structure properly implemented?
- Is the queue strategy optimal to do parallel processing?
- Is the use of in-place element structure properly implemented in my case, and is it needed for 1D array with a size of 4000 to 20000 points?
Thank you for your help/suggestions.
Cedric
Attachments:
Main_VI.vi 25 KB
RUN.vi 88 KB
acquisitions_data.vi 28 KBHello Cedric,
I noticed that in your "RUN.vi" you are calling the "acquisitions_data.vi" iteratively in a For Loop. Everytime that For Loop iterates, you are creating the Task, running the acquisition, then closing the Task. You don't need to create and clear the Task over and over again like that. Instead, create and configure the Task outside of the for loop. This way when you get inside the for loop, use the "DAQmx Start Task.vi" to start the task, perform the read using the "DAQmx Read.vi", then use the "DAQmx Stop Task.vi" to stop it. Outside the for loop you can place the "DAQmx Clear task.vi" to clear the references.
Perhaps this will help with your performance.

Firefox 4.0 RC has huge memory leak + slow down problem
Firefox 4.0 RC Seems to have a huge memory leak issue. After leaving the program open for around half an hour the RAM usage climbs to over 1 gb.
However, I have 12 gb of physical ram, so firefox staking 1 gb for itself is not too big of a problem (and is probably a blessing as it means it's caching more data), but the problem is that the UI begins to slow down and become clunky after about 30 minutes.
Browsing, switching tabs, even typing becomes jittery and not very responsive.
This happens regardless of how many tabs I have open.
Now it's also crashing every once in a while.Even with Firefox 4.0 (Release) running in Safe Mode, with all add-ons and themes disabled, I'm still inclined to think there's something screwy going on here.
I was watching Page Faults/sec, Page File Bytes and Working Set in Performance Monitor and tailing the Privoxy log for requests. Even with Firefox minimized and "doing nothing" (making no requests, anyway), over the space of a 10 minute period the Working Set grew from 244,375,552 bytes to 274,939,004 bytes (averaging 50,939 bytes/second). This behaviour doesn't seem consistent though - sometimes it doesn't seem to grow at all.
Additionally the Page Faults/Sec went nuts, accompanied by a step in Page File Bytes and Working Set, whenever a request got made to http://safebrowsing.clients.google.com/safebrowsing/downloads which seems to happens on a regular basis (approximately every 30 minutes). -
LabVIEW 8.0 computer slow down problem
When using LabVIEW 8.0/8.2 Full Development suite I have been experiencing times when the cpu usage of LabVIEW goes to 99% and stays there causing it to lock up and have to terminate the process. I have experienced this several times while working on a large program that I have been developing. I thought it was due to low memory but have upgraded to 1Gig of memory and still have to same issue. This will ussually happen when I make a change to the program or save the changes I have just made.
Dear Bjarne:
Are you able to see this issue with other larger VIs or, do all
the VIs slows down. Lets shift gears a
bit and see if now all VIs in the environment
are slow than usual. Just restart the LabVIEW environment, make sure no other
applications are open and that the CPU usage in the task manager does not show
its resources being used by another application. Then open up a brand new
VI or some of our shipping examples. If you see the problem while editing VIs and then try to save, it would be specific to the
environment you have installed. If it’s specific to the VI, I would take it to
a different system with LabVIEW 8.2 and see if that happens? Can you try
running the same VI on another LabVIEW development computer system?

http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?board.id=170&message.id=128375&requireLogin=False
LabVIEW will take little time (milliseconds to 1 or 2 seconds) depending on the
size of the VI to save if it’s a large project. Is this the behavior you are
concerned about? Can you try may be mass compiling VIs
in your environment? Please post some snapshots of task manager and the
VI size and the block diagram to help us speed the troubleshooting process.
Thanks much

Are others finding that FW CS3 opens very VERY slowly and
even after it
opens it takes a while before any of teh buttons on teh main
launch screen
are clickable. In fact, in that span of time between FW
opening and the
buttons on the launch screen being clickable, clicking
anywhere results in a
"Not Responding" in teh title bar until FW catches up.
One last thing: I have already disabled Aero when FW opens,
so that isnt the
culprit. If I dont do that, then bitmap tools (like
paintbrush & eraser)
become so slow and jarring that they are unusable...
I'm uber disappointed with these performance problems...

Anything in Startup Items could be a problem. Apple declared Startup Items to be obsolete in 2006 so this is software that hasn't been updated since before then or they are following the doing the don't-update-until-it-breaks plan.
I suggest uninstalling these problems to see if that fixes things. Always use the vendor-provided uninstaller or uninstallation instructions. Never try to do it manually. That could only make things worse. You may need to download a new installer that may come with an uninstaller. Unfortunately, installers, and especially uninstallers, are a weak point of OS X compared to Windows.

Remove these too. iStat seems to have an invalid plist file. KeyAccess has a support link that may eventually lead you to an uninstaller.

Notice a trend? This is why I say to use vendor-provided uninstallers.

Hello,
Have any idea what happened to SAP GUI after installed Eastern Asian Language Package on Windows XP ?
I am working on smartforms translations in SE63 and during entering the japanese or chinese text my working area is slowing down(problems with scrolling), like missing memory or sth?
How to overcome it?

Macbook keeps slowing down and crashing
Hi,
I started having this problem about 2 weeks ago. Everything was working fine, then out of nowhere, my macbook froze. I waited for about 10 minutes, then I turned it off. When I turned the computer back on, it was EXTREMELY slow. It took 15 minutes just to boot, and after that, even when i just moved the cursor, the rainbow wheel would appear and keep spining for 20 minutes. It was impossible to do anything. So I decided to restore the hard drive from a backup I had. After I did that, it worked fine for a couple hours, then the same thing happened. Then I did some research and concluded that my hard drive was dying, so I got a new one, restored it from my backup and replaced my old hard drive. But after a few hours same thing happened again.
So I know the problem is not related to the hard drive. Also, I everything seems to work fine when I boot from an external hard drive. Only when I replace and boot from the internal hard drive connection, the slow down occurs and eventually gets to a point where I can't do anything with my computer. Sometimes I can repair it using the disk utility and diskwarrior, but it doesn't last long, eventually it starts slowing down again and then the same thing happens. The operating system doesn't make any difference either. It happens both with Leopard and Snow Leopard.
I'd appreciate it if anyone knows what would be causing this problem.
Thank you.How much free space on the drive?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 15% free disk space.
I have more than 50% free disk space. I did have some slowing down problems before because of disk space, but this time it's different. It's not a regular kind of slowin down, it slows down so much that it becomes imposible to do anything. Even when I just move the cursor, rainbow wheel appears and doesn't go away for 10 minutes.
But thank you anyway. -
RT target slows down after updating with a shared variable
I am using a shared variable that is defined in the RT target (cFP-2110) to transfer data from the host PC. The shared variable is a cluster of scaling parameters that needs to be stored in the RT target. The host PC is only connected temporarily for system setup and calibration.
There is only one instance of the shared variable in both the host PC vi and the target vi. The shared variable in the host is located in an event case that is activated when there is a value change. Everything works great until I make a value change in the shared variable. The target vi promptly slows from 30mSec to about 500 mSec and stays that way. The only way I can get the RT target to run full speed again is to recycle power or reset it.
What am I doing wrong?
Temporarily slowing down the RT target when the shared variable is updated is not a problem for this application. The problem is that I have to restart the target to get it running at full speed again.
I’m using Win-XP, LV 8.5.1 and FieldPoint 6.0.1
Thanks,
Dave J.Hi Mark,
The host is sending the shared variable via an event case. When the event is activated, the data is sent to the target and it functions as expected, except that it slows down to a crawl. I have to restart the target to get it working up to speed again. The are no error codes.
The shared variable is a cluster of several items and it is attached.
In the mean time to promote the project, I split up the cluster into smaller clusters to use several shared variables and now I do not have a slow down problem. In other words, it works great. As an experiment I have sent the several small clusters at one time and I get the slow-down problem again.
I've come to the conclusion that large single cluster (which is attached) is too much to send at one time.
Please advise if there is something else to learn or understand.
Thanks,
Dave J.

Nautilus + SVG icon theme = slow downs?!
Hi, ive installed the Snowish icon theme which i found pretty nice. I went for the SVG version instead PNG but later on day i experienced pretty heavy slowdowns when starting nautilus or when the file selecting dialog appeared. veeeery choppy behaviour :?
selecting tango then as my icon theme let those problems disappear so this has to be a problem there. but starting nautilus from terminal gives no output at all, maybe those icons itself are the problem not nautilus? whats goin on heredetto wrote:Hi, ive installed the Snowish icon theme which i found pretty nice. The SVG slow-down problem begins with gtk 2.10. The file chooser is seriously affected too. No fix I think, just use png icons. -
Problems with Fireworks CS3 in Windows 7 Pro 64 bit
I have recently upgraded to Windows 7 Pro from Windows XP Pro. My Fireworks CS3 is having a problem. I cannot select items in the left side menu bar if I minimize or move the Fireworks CS3 window. If I have just opened the window it works, but minimize the window or move it and the toolbar stops working.
This problem is not unique to my machine. 2 other people are having the exact same problem. Here is the link to the Windows 7 forum:
http://www.sevenforums.com/software/26957-adobe-fireworks-cs3-issue.html
We sure could use some help. This is one of my bread and butter programs.I'm happy to hear you have other work-around alternatives!
Businesses with mission-critical software usually are very careful to research that their software will run on any proposed new system or that alternative software is available. This is the main reason that Microsoft had to continue supporting XP longer than they intended. Too much business-critical software ran on XP but did not run under Vista and would take some time before it would be upgraded to do so...if at all.
If you have "bread and butter" apps, then it was your responsibility to make sure that you could run them once you upgraded. Adobe's software worked more or less as advertised for the operating systems that were available at the time the versions were released. That's reasonable. Expecting indefinite support into the future is not.
Fireworks isn't a $2000 product. Adobe continues product development, yes. They've moved on to CS4 and its patches. You can upgrade to FW CS4 for about $150. The system requirements for FW CS4 do not include Windows 7; note that Fireworks is only certified for 32-bit operating systems:

However, there's a statement about CS4 applications (in general) working with Windows 7:

And you'd want to get the recent updater:

... It is probably not a huge problem to fix for an Adobe engineer.
If the feature worked under Vista but does not work under Windows 7, then that means that the problem probably lies somewhere in how the program communicates with the OS. The problem is not isolated to the tens - possibly hundreds - of thousands of lines of Fireworks code, but in how that code interacts with the Windows 7 APIs. To solve this problem is not the work of "an Adobe engineer." It's the work of a project team. It's the work of a project team which would have to be pulled off development of Fireworks CS5 for a few months to resurrect the old CS3 code, get familiar with it, and try to track down and solve the problem, then package up, test, and release a patch . By pulling resources off CS5 development, CS5 would be delayed or quality inversely impacted. Since CS3 is not a current product for sale, I can't see Adobe making this investment. There's no return on it, where there would be a return on getting a quality FW CS5 out the door on time. -
My iMac 8.1 (10.6.8 ) was slowing down and had recurrent permissions problems, mostly with Java. I backed everything up, and then re-installed from time machine. Now all I get is a black screen which says I need to reboot. Power+D gives me a hardware error message: 4 MOT/1/40000003: HDD-1336 or HDD-1327. When I reboot from the OSX CD and start disc utilities everything checks out OK. When I reload 10.5.2 from the OSX CD everything seems to work OK and no more permissions problems. But then I loose all my email and safari stuff. Anyone have any ideas short of going back to my old PC?

Hi
Thanks for the help. No point in fooling around with it any more. Will I be able to use it as a monitor if I get a mimi mac?
Cheers. Don
No unfortunatley it's too old, you are referring to Target Display Mode which became avialble in 2009, your 2008 needs to have the HD replaced. I'd still do that if everything else is OK or you can simply buy a new MM and display or even a new iMac or an Apple refurbished iMac to save money.
