Firmware Password Lock, Managing Firmware Updates

I want to increase my data security beyond account password protection. (Ran FileVault previously but encountered a disaster - user account information became corrupted somehow. Password would be accepted but login denied with an error message but no code. Ouch.)
Firmware Password Lock looks to me like a good bump up in security (I know it's not in the same league as FileVault from experience). I'm thinking I'll have to settle for this less secure option.
Please help me to understand possible pitfalls beyond the obvious "retain the password".
Will Firmware updates continue to come in normally with Software Update? Please help. Tony

Thank you for helping with my security question. I have googled a bit. I have found examples of physical damage to computers (new mother board needed) because of failure to get firmware update before upgrading OS. In that case it was upgrade to OS10 from OS9. This doesn't directly apply to my case, never the less, it does cause me to pause.
Is it correct that if firmware password lock is enabled, firmware updates will load and install without unlocking firmware.
I'm not sure about this. a firmware update will always come with instructions and if the firmware password needs to be turned off to install it, this will be explicitly mentioned. as turning the firmware password off is very easy and firmware upgrades are very rare, this should not be a consideration IMO.
(sorry for asking again - just trying to be sure. Could not find a specific answer to this in apple support info.)
I did find this recommendation to check for and load firmware updates outside of Software Update.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
Please tell me if this is recommended.
there is absolutely nothing wrong with downloading an update manually.

  • WAP4410N wireless traffic locks up even when running latest firmware update

I maintain multiple buildings, and each building has anywhere between 1 and 4 Cisco/Linksys WAP4410N access points. The problem is that at random intervals, the access points just stop sending and receiving wireless traffic. Every day or two, I have to log into every single access point (either via HTTPS or SSH) and reboot them in order for them to start working again.
In short, here are the config details:
    They are all version 2 hardware (either WAP4410N-A V02 or WAP4410N-E V02).
They are running IPv4 (IPv6 is disabled) and get static IP addresses via DHCP.
When there are WAPs with overlapping signals, each WAP is on a different non-overlapping channel (1, 6, or 11).
Each WAP has two SSIDs (with spaces in their names). One is secured with WPA2. The other is unsecured.
There are two VLANs on the Ethernet interface. Each of the two SSIDs are assigned to a separate VLAN.
There is a DHCP server on the network, so the WAPs do not actually assign IP addresses to clients.
All of the WAPs are running on PoE switches. However, some are gigabit and some are 10/100 switches. Brands vary (Dell and Linksys) and models vary.
Cisco finally recognized this issue as:
CSCtx62203—In certain environments and traffic model, the WAP4410N may lockup after some undetermined time. Workaround: Reboot the device.
As such, the workaround didn’t really offer anything new. Rebooting every WAP ends up being a very time consuming process. It’s awful. And since you have no control over when this issue surfaces and can’t put any safeguards in place, I get calls about it at various points of the day almost every day.
Supposedly the most recent firmware update (2.0.6.1) claimed to fix the issue, but it only seemed to make it worse. So now instead of a WAP locking up every day or two, it locks up anywhere between every 15 minutes to 4 hours when in use.
The firmware was updated and the following issue was fixed in firmware version  2.0.6.1: CSCtx62203—In certain environments and traffic model, the WAP4410N may lockup after some undetermined time. (A protection mechanism was added to guard against sporadic problems with client association that could occur after six to 24 hours.)
As for troubleshooting, there are no error packets. On access points running firmware 2.0.6.1, these messages appear:

These log messages appear on both WAP4410N-A V02 and WAP4410N-E V02 devices.
I noticed that when the “beacon stuck” message appears, wireless traffic locked up 10-15 minutes prior to the message’s appearance in the log, and the SSID drops for 4-6 minutes after the message appears.
Is there anything that can be done to address the issue?

    1) LAN port speed doesn't appear to have any effect
    2) Forcing a connection type doesn't seem to have any effect. This is also rather impractical.
    3) I don't have that option (though there is a TKIP/AES mixed option). Either way, I'd rather not have to resort to using a weaker encryption method.
    4) No effect.
I did manage to find some information about the error message (older versions of firmware didn't even offer that clue).
    http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Advanced_wireless_settings#Beacon_Interval
I ended up increasing the beacon interval from 100ms to 500ms under Wireless > Advanced Settings.
The wifi analyzer app on android seems to keep dropping the SSID when the beacon interval is set that high, so I might have to adjust it to find a good balance.
However, while it was set to 500ms, none of the access points went down for two days.
[edit]: I reduced the beacon interval incrementally down to 300ms. It started locking up at 250ms.

  • Firmware password lock

I have a PowerBook G4 that when booting holding the option key to boot to startup manager, show a open firmware password lock.
I am not the original owner of the Mac so I do not have any of the passwords.
I have tried booting the Mac to the OSX CD with no luck. I can startup the Mac in to Open Firmware command line. But there if I type a commend, it then asks for the password that I do not have.
How can Open Firmware password be rest so that I can gain access to the HD and boot the PowerBook G4 up get and get the data off the drive?

    Jade
Use a cross-head screwdriver (No 0) to release the four screws retaining the RAM bay cover plate. Once you release the cover plate you can remove the RAM Modules. Make sure you ground yourself first or if you have an ESD wrist strip handy, use it. If there are two RAM Modules remove the one in the top slot and put it to one side. Nove move the second module from the bottom slot into the top slot. If there is only one RAM Module move it out of whatever slot it is in and into the other slot. Now reboot the laptop and reset the Parameter RAM or PRAM (pronounced PeeRAM). To reset the PRAM depress the commandalt+pr keys simultaneously. After the initial boot chime on restart you should hear another one after a few seconds. Release the keys and let the laptop boot normally.
If you've done everything correctly you should have successfully cleared the firmware password.
Once you've verified there's no firmware password any more, shut down the laptop and either insert the removed Module (assuming two modules) and secure the RAM Bay cover plate, or simply secure the RAM Bay cover plate if there was only one RAM Module to begin with.

  • Lock Code request after firmware update on E71

After I updated successful (message was displayed by software updater) my phone, it makes a restart.
And asked for the "Lock Code". I never used the lock code function and I never changed it before.
The default Lock Code "12345" mentioned within the documentation is not working.
Re-installation of the firmware is not working as I am unable to reinstall "PC Suite Support" due to the fact that I am not able to confirm the installation on my phone. I went to the Nokia shop and they told me they have to sent the cell phone in for repair and this can takes up to four weeks. This is totally unacceptable. Until today I was I fan of Nokia phones but this has changed dramatically.

    Hi
I also experienced the same problem. Phone was working perfectly prior to Firmware Update.
I had never used or changed the lock code. Initially I thought everything was fine because the
Firmware Update was reported to have been a success.
I then went through the process of selecting language (English) and setting date and time.
However, after doing all this I was then asked for a Lock Code.
I was a little bemused but tried the default '12345'. This did not work.
I tried all the other usual defaults; '0000', '1111', '1234' etc, still no joy.
After a little swearing I decided to ring the Nokia help line. After explaining the problem I was advised to go to my nearest Care Centre. I was also told that if the cause of my problem was as a result of the 'faulty' firmware update then they should do it free of charge.
Off to the Care Centre then (30 mile round trip)!!!! They rigged it up to their 'kit' and confirmed that
the Lock Code had not been changed and was still set to '12345'. They could not access the phone
either. They now have my phone and are going to try and sort it and if they cannot sort it will be
sending off to Nokia. This should then be sorted under warranty (although I would argue the cause
of the problem is a glitch in the Firmware Update and not a fault with the phone).
Let's hope that when I get the phone back it will all be hunky dory!!!
It's also worth noting that even though I could not access the phone directly by using its own keys
I could use all the functions when rigged up to my computer through Nokia PC Suite. I could access
all contacts, messages, calendar etc. I was also able to send and receive SMS. If the phone was
locked then surely I shouldn't have been able to do this????
Hope the above sheds some light on your problem. Just be sure that you are not fobbed off by
either the help line or the 'techies' in the shop. At the end of the day if you have not messed about
with the lock code before the firmware update you should be able to get it sorted free of charge if
the phone is still under warranty. GOOD LUCK!!!!

  • Lights-Out Management Firmware Update

I tried to execute the Lights-Out Management Firmware Update, which Apple released, today.
But my Xserve always gives my an error, when I start the update application.
Lights-Out Management Firmware Update: Bad executable (or shared library)
Does anybody have the same problem?
    Thanks and Regards,
    JO

There's a new firmware update out, version 1.1. I tried simply using Software Update but no luck. It seemed to think it installed both 1.0 and 1.1, but all I saw was 1.0, which (still) did not work.
But I tried something else, and I think this works. I cannot test it until tomorrow when I can actually touch the server (to unplug it).
Open the Terminal application and do the following (omitting the "% " which I include to indicate the prompt).
    % sudo rm /Applications/Server/Xserve\ Lights-Out\ Management\ Firmware\ Update.app
    % sudo rm /Library/Receipts/LOMUpdate.pkg
    % sudo softwareupdate -i LOMUpdate-1.1
The last step is important. It should only download the 1.1 updater. This seemed to work for me. that is, it downloaded the 1.1 updater, which I was able to run (from /Applications/Server/). However it tells me I need to shut down and unplug the the Xserve for one minute, then boot up, then install the update. I cannot do that until I'm back at work tomorrow. We'll see!

  • My MacBook pro did a firmware update now will not accept my password

My Skype account was hacked so I changed the password for my computer too I did a firmware update the computer started up and went to a black screen asking for my password it does not accept the new or old passwords. I have tried resetting the password with the snow leopard install disc but it will not recognise it and ejects. Please help

Try image capture (in your applications folder) - or the finder - if neither of these see the card uyou need to try a USB card reader - once you get yoru photos off use the camera format command to erase and reformat the card
a best practice to is to never have any computer program (including iPhoto) delete the photos from the card but to import the photos and keep them and then after at least one successful backup cycle has completed and then reformat the card --  I use three very large (32 GB) cards in rotation so I do not reformat for typically a year or more giving me one more long term backup of my photos

  • Firmware Password Lock, HD Mapping Concern

I'm using Firmware Password Lock for a little added security in the event my MacBook Pro is stolen. I would like to know if using this password lock feature will detrimentally effect the drive controllers ability to automatically map out bad blocks on the disc. Is the drives SMART routine compromised by using Firmware Password Lock? Clarity on this issue would assist me in understanding how best to use the Firmware Password Lock. Please help.

no, firmware password has nothing to do with this. it does not affect hard drives in any way. it locks the firmware not hard drives an is only ever involved during the boot process. and btw, you should know that a firmware password won't protect you much in case your computer is stolen. firmware protection can be easily circumvented given unrestricted access to the computer. google it up to see how. if you are worried about that sort of thing use encryption.

  • IPod Firmware Update - Password Problem

    Hi.
I plugged in iPod last night and iTunes told me I had a Firmware Update waiting for me to download. So I tried to do this.
It then showed me a box with my name and asking me to input a password.
    Which password though?
I had just spent a couple of hours installing a borrowed eMac whilst my 6500/300 is away for repair and getting Mail to work with my ISP. Hence I was up to my neck in passwords and usernames which it turned out weren't usernames at all but something else. So you can probably imagine I had by then got passwords up to my back teeth. Now I'm getting asked for yet another one! Whoowee!!
I tried all the passwords I could think of but eventually the Apple Download site told me to go away and take it easy for a while, try again later.
Any clues as to what Password I am being asked for and how I can retrieve it, please?
    PM6500/300 (603e)   Mac OS 9.1.x

    Problem solved.
I tried again. Got it wrong again. However, when I had used up my third try, the website just gave me my password and said try again.
So I did. And it worked.
Updating the iPod is funny isn't it? A few seconds on the Mac then unplug it from the Mac and plug it into the wall. Then watch as iPod updates itself. Very odd way of going about things. Well, it amused me for a while anyway.
I wonder what the update does?

  • SMC Firmware Update Locks my mini

I got an auto update for SMC Firmware Update for my Mac mini [early 2006 w intel solo].
After running the auto - uptater it asked me to restart my computer. Once I did, my mini will not respond but the SMC Firmware Update looks to be running.
    I have done the following:
    • Made sure my mouse and keyboard work. They do but the mouse cannot click on anything - just move around.
    • Tried to command-Q - doesn't work.
    • Restart - doesn't work.
    • Tried to restart with holding down the power button. Got the flashing power light and tone but - doesn't work.
    • Tried force quiting with command-option-escape - doesn't work.
    • Tried looking for some form of support out there - doesn't work.
Can anyone out there give me a hand?

I am in the same situation - am presently running under "safe boot". It´s the only way to communicate with the **** box! Have tried numerous attempt to let the machine restart, and left it as long as a day in this state, in case there is something going on in the background, but in vain.
So far it always looses contact after the initial boot, with the screen looking "dumb hazy blue".
Is there a way to uninstall the SMC Firmware Update -anyone??
And, by the way - to call this issue solved with the given resolve - isn´t that a little like telling a man with a broken leg that he should see a doctor?

  • Attempted Iphone 4 update to latest firmware update "failed"

Ive attempted to update the Iphone to the latest firmware update  and it has failed 3 times, the final time it looked as though
it worked but stopped and went into new mode to go-back to Restore to old  setting. Now it is locked up and asking me for the  admin backup password
and everything I've tried is not working..  Not sure what to do at this point.
The laptop I'm using is a Panasonic CF29 and running Windows XP with SP3 installed.
I'm  open to any ideas at this point.
                Thanks Artman

Then it's pretty hopeless. Normally the error message remains displayed until you click "OK", so it's surprising that you didn't see it. You can try the shotgun approach; just try a bunch of stuff in the hopes that it will work. But first I suggest trying to update it again, and this time watch it. The following list covers the most common causes of update failures:
Open a Command window and type the command "netsh   winsock   reset"
    Reboot your computer
    Disable your antivirus and firewall
    Launch iTunes
Connect the phone using a USB port directly on the computer, not a hub
When the phone is recognized in iTunes click on it, then click Restore
If the phone is NOT recognized in iTunes, disconnect it, the hold the HOME and SLEEP buttons for exactly 10 seconds until the screen goes black, then release SLEEP but continue holding HOME while you connect the cable and continue holding HOME until iTunes recognizes a phone in recovery mode
If the update completes you are in business
You mentioned being prompted for a backup password. If your backup is encrypted you will need to know the password to complete the restore; if you don't know it you will have to restore as New and manually add your content back. If it is encrypted you really did enter a password for it once, whether you remember doing so or not.

  • N95 Firmware update (v13, v20... whatever it's sup...

Seriously don't hold your breath for too long... Nokia are truly awful at this, they treat the customers who buy their most expensive handsets with such apparent contempt it is nothing short of disgusting.
I bought an N93 which was quickly superceded and completely forgotten about. To this day it is riddled with bugs and problems, as well as lacking so many features which were added to later models of phone when there was no reason other than Nokia not providing an update or releasing the software as individual updates.
The N95 is not much different unfortunately. It is unstable and full of bugs, including frequent crashes, abysmal memory availability and management as well as annoying things like the the system ignoring key presses every so often. For all those people who don't experience any of this, lucky you! There are far too many people who do however...
I'm sure some bright spark will come on here and point out in some way how I'm wrong, that Nokia are too busy working on new phones, that we've had a firmware update or two already for the N95 or something else. The simple fact is that Nokia are marketing the N95 as a computer, even to the point of the having the advertising slogan "It's what computers have become" but in fact they are treating it like a throw away mobile phone. Even Microsoft provide better and more frequent updates to their system than this! And that really is saying something!
What a shame that they have locked down the system so much, there is a tonne of talent out there in the opensource community who could make this potentially amazing platform truly outstanding. Nokia sure as hell don't seem to have the inclination!
When will you get your firmware...? It has been over 4 months now since they last updated the N95-1. I am beginning to get the feeling that this one has just been chucked on the heap as the N93 was... the parallels between the N93/N93i release and the N95/N95-8GB situation are rather strong. After 10 years as a loyal Nokia customer I won't be making the mistake of choosing them again!!
The supposed October 28th deadline has come and gone. I have emailed Nokia 5 times and been ignored, for over 3 months now. I have called everywhere I can and get the stock response "we don't know that" or "we only get told that a few hours in advance". Assuming any of that is actually the honest truth, it makes Nokia look pretty poor in their organisation of information and product support.
The sad fact is that even IF this firmware comes out, the chances of any further updates are extremely slim. Of course you could argue that there is a lack of commercial incentive for this. The N95 platform is so jammed full of technology that it has the potential to last for 4-5 years as a perfectly decent phone and mobile computing platform, with the right system updates of course. The industry makes no bones about the fact that it wants people to upgrade every 12-18 months, it's how they make their money. This is not conspiracy theory, just a sound bit of reasoning as to why we're not going to get a long stream of support for this phone.
I read with interest that Google are launching an open platform and SDK soon. Much as I am wary of google, being the corporate giant that they are, this at least is the beginnings of a truly open platform which hopefully users will be able to work with and improve in the way that manufacturers like Nokia simply don't want to. That is of course until the phone manufacturers who move to this system lock it down like Apple have done with the iPhone and prevent free enterprise and development.
I know we live in a capitalist society, but sometimes consumers are pushed just a bit too far. It is NOT acceptable, nor environmentally friendly to push out and make obsolete technology which costs as much as a reasonable spec entry PC once a year on us.
I doubt Nokia will read this, even if they do it'll just go ignored like all the other complaints from the customers they have let-down like this.

I'm sorry but "be patient" is just not sufficient here. It has been over 4 months and these are some MAJOR bugs in the phone.
Let me detail my day so far with my N95, for those of you who are not familiar with these problems or who think that perhaps this is just a disgruntled customer who has an overinflated sense of importance.
All of this is on an N95 replacement (the first one's earpiece broke) which I have had for under 2 weeks now. It is the latest firmware and there is NOTHING installed on it, it is as it comes...
    * Full charge overnight with the phone off.
    * Switch the phone on.
    * Check my emails (I was sent a small mpeg video (700k) which I download to the phone.
    - WiFi connection is lost 4 times and I'm within 3 metres of the aerial. N95 fails to find my access point for as long as a minute after losing the connection, when everything else in my house can see it.
    * Check FaceBook mobile in web browser.
    * Read BBC news headlines in web browser.
    - clicked on 3 minute news video headlines, realplayer loads up, runs out of memory to play the video. Realplayer closes, taking the web browser with it.
    * Try to play the video I was emailed. N95 doesn't support uber-standard MPEG files, so...
    * Browse the web again, searching for how to play the MPEG.
    - someone suggests renaming the file to .3gp to make RP load it. I'm dubious but it's worth a go. I go to the menu to access the file manager. I rename the file and click on it, still no joy.
    - I close the file manager and go back to my browser, except not - it closed without warning because the memory ran out (presumably)
    * I give up trying to browse the web and lock the phone.
    * I need to make a call. I press the buttons to unlock it and mess up the timing (my fault completely)
    - I keep pressing the buttons in quick succession in my impatience (which is just pointless I know, but I was in a hurry and fumbling with it).
    - Having pressed the buttons about 8 times the phone unlocks but the screen goes dark.
    - I press the camera focus/shutter button lightly to "un-sleep" the phone. It lights up for 2 seconds and goes dark again.
    - I repeat this 3 times and the phone switches itself off!!
    * The phone restarts automatically but once rebooted is slow and laggy, missing keypresses all over the place so I have to switch off then on again... it is normal (as normal as it gets) after this.
    * I go to my PC and write this!!!!
Absolutely ALL of this is stuff the phone is supposed to do with its hands tied behind its back. I have not used any 3rd party software and never tried to use more than 2 applications at a time - the N95 IS a multitasking phone and so should handle a lot more than this!!!
This behaviour was present on the previous handset too, on both the firmware versions it had on it during its life. My current handset came with an 8-point service engineer inspection saying it was in full health...
Be patient? Even if I was prepared to mutely wait for 4+ months patiently whilst such dreadful bugs plague the phone, I am an N95 user who is concurrently paying off a contract on an N93 phone, costing me £200 ($400 US) in monthly rental for a phone which became unusable (due to signal issues on the network when I moved house to a different part of the country). Be patient? It is now about 14 months since I got the N93 and just over 12 months since the firmware was updated on that (I quote from the firmware date on my N93). Nokia dropped that one like a hot stone and completely screwed everyone who had bought it. Be patient? You must be kidding me! When Nokia, despite an all-singing-all-dancing website cannot ever be bothered to make even the most non-committal of announcements about firmware on it's own forums, why on earth should I be patient? I understand as a programmer myself all to well that things can slide and problems can delay things, but at this point I can't even find solid information to say there will be another update for this, let alone when it MIGHT arrive or what it will HOPEFULLY include... and as I said in my original post, I have telephoned and been fobbed off and had 5 emails ignored (not including the ones about the N93 which were also ignored). And yes, I did get the received message report from Nokia's own system saying someone would come back to me.
I'm sorry to rant at you, I'm sure it's not your fault but be patient? Just not acceptable any more!

  • New features as a firmware update?

According to the press release the new Airport Extreme:
Apple also announced that its popular AirPort Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi Base Station and Time Capsule® now feature simultaneous 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz dual-band networking for optimal performance, range and compatibility. An innovative Guest Network feature allows setting up a secondary network for friends and visitors with Internet-only access so you don't have to hand out your WiFi password.
Does anyone know if these features will be available as a firmware update for older Airport Extremes?
    Thanks.

Having the guest access SSID should be no problem for firmware, as some much less powerful APs can do multiple SSIDs (same channel). But dual band networking is a different matter; if the units were built with discrete radios from the beginning, then new firmware may be all that's needed. But if the 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz radios in these previous models shared any circuitry, then I doubt we'll see a firmware upgrade to provide the simultaneous networks. A shame, since many competitors are doing that now. I just bought a Linksys with dual-band this week for a project. The 15 Airport Extremes (n) I have now at work (a school) sure could use the dual band feature.
For a time earlier this year, I was testing a low-end enterprise wifi system which had a really nice Dashboard management tool to configure and monitor the APs. So I reconfigured the 10 AEn's to 5 Ghz and an SSID that only teacher and admin laptops could connect to. It was a great way to segregate the network and assure teachers could get the bandwidth they needed for instruction. However, the test enterprise system proved to have a firmware issue in that the APs could not handle more than about 20 users before crashing and dropping them all. So I ditched that system, and got 5 more AEn's to get us through the year on a single SSID at 2.4 Ghz. Now I am considering expanding on the Apple stuff, though VLAN support is something else I will need soon, and I am not clear whether the new units have that.
These Apple beasts have great hardware, but if they could add some beefed up firmware capability and a 'dashboard' utility to truly manage them (not one at a time, but all at once), they might fight for some enterprise market share.
On a related note, I had 98 laptops connected to one AEn a few months ago (I have a screen shot of the Airport Utility window to prove it).

  • Lumia 800 firmware update in Philippines

Hi guys, is there anyone of you who has Lumia 800 phone that is locked into Globe telecom? Been waiting for so long for al firmware update 12070 to come to my phone and up until now there's no update...
Nokia support always points me to Globe and Globe doesn't know how to update Lumia Phone... Too painful...

Finally, after waiting for about two weeks, I got to update my L800 to the latest firmware. There was a notice on my phone that there is an update and when I plugged it to my laptop, it update twice, and the second one had internet sharing on it as part of the option.
At first, I could not use the internet sharing, my mistake was, I personalized the user name and password for the wifi setting, which I thought shouldn't matter since you should be able to change it to whatever you like. I realized the mistake after about a week so I decided to do a phone reset, this time, keeping whatever settings I have for internet sharing and voila!
Now I'm able to connect my Wii and play Modern Warfare with others. Wohoo!
Globe telecoms, on the other hand, is the problematic one now. I'm from Mandaluyong, and I've been bugging their tech support about the very slow mobile internet connection I have in my area. I'm also experiencing the same problem in Makati and Batangas. Anyway, that issue has yet to be resolved.
I'm just glad I got the tethering to work.
