First things as a new DBA

This may be redundant or at least covered many times in many guises.
I would like to know what would be the first five thing you would do as a new DB on a site?
I'm talking about general system gathering information or scripts you would run to see what you have on your hands?
It could be as simple as finding the version or possibly something more complex.
Be interesting to see what each individual DBA would do upon getting to a new site and not knowing anything about it.

I'm currently working my way through Expert Oracle Database 10g Administration so it may take a while for me to get up and running. I have ample access to the test system and the DBA is more than willing to help out. As you probably know though the DBA has only so much time for stupid questions so as long as I don't need to bother him or at least when I do I'd like to sound as if I did some research. This I'm hoping is where you might help. So from the list above I'd like to start checking and poking around the system, apologies if these may be simply concepts to you so all I ask for is a bit of patience and pointing me in the right direction:
*Locate the database backup job and verify that it is running, that the job looks correct, and search for evidense that it has been tested in the past, i.e., that recovery was accomplished.*
Is there a default place for this job or does every dba write his own? If so what type of things should I be finding out from the DBA?
*Run a query to check on the file allocation size, usage, and extendability. (Determine if File system, raw, ASM in use at same time)*
So this is a query. Are these the v$ type tables? If so which tables should I be querying. I can then go and look up the reference in the user guide.
*Check Oracle cron for any regularly scheduled tasks and ask system administrator to do the same for root's cron (if UNIX or Linux) Investiage scripts.*
cron is a unix based program if I am getting the picture correctly here. I will look up in google about cron but is there anything specific to the database I should be paying attention to
*Run a user to permissions report to see how many people have DBA privileges, object creation privs, etc ....*
This is a built in report from oracle?
*Look for, and Run Statspack or obtain AWR report for database and look over*
This may be a bit more advanced for me. I have heard this statspack being spoken about but have not quite understood the magic behind it. does the dba need to install it or is it already available. I see there is some info on it in the book so I may skip ahead if its important enough
*Of course, Oracle and OS version, but also if dedicated or shared server mode.*
This is obviously obtained with something like select * from v$version?
*Single or Multiple instance, standby ... so, HA requirements.*
HA? What is the full meaning? What type fo instance I will speak with the DBA about.
*Number of concurrent users, and if 24/7*
Is this possible to find out with a query?
*Storage , backup method*
This is obviously something I need to speak with the DBA about. Any suitable questions or is this a kettle of fish that I should open a new topic for.
*And getting a rough idea of how the application(s) are implemented and talking to the DB*
We are using Oracle Applications so the application is pretty much the standard that we get from oracle.
*Get familiar with the architecture (servers, instances, listeners, HA, backups) - for test and production environments.*
This is a pretty loaded question but again pointing me in the right direction of what I should be finding out about would be great
*Baseline of typical performance with AWR/statspack/Ignite - whatever tool is available and standard at the site.*
This is connected to the above info about performance monitoring
*Run a privileges audit *
Is this again a built in script or is there certain tables I should be looking at?
Thanks again and all help greatly appreciated

  • Great article for new DBA's who are trying to get that first DBA job.

I just came across this article, pretty informative, answers some questions I had when I first started. You can read it here

Yeah. God forbid I want new DBA's to read my article that is 100% relevant to this board and this topic. Hardly the same thing as Viagra Pills or African MILF's in your Area. The second post was an error, apologies.

I received an Iphone 5 as a gift two days ago. The first thing I did was set up ICloud for photos. Itunes would not allow me to add songs to my new phone without restoring it, yet when I did this, it deleted all 129 photos of my graduation and friends from the past two days. And I cannot find them anywhere, photo stream, ICloud, nothing. Where can I get back my memories?

Were the photos taken by your new iPhone?  If so, did you not import them off your phone to your computer (as you would any other digital camera) before the restore?  If not, restoring wiped the data off the phone and your pictures are gone.
Sounds like a good time to (re)read the User Guide.

I have used lightroom for ~2 years and have lightroom 5.5 installed on a PC. Yesterday evening I uploaded a new set of photos which I cataloged and rated as usual. After that when I switched to the develop module trouble began. First thing was when using the crop tool the picture would disappear and only reappear once I closed the tool. Then exposure and White balance changes would change the histogram but not the appearance of the photo. Finally clipping was also not appearing on the picture. I first reuploaded the photos. No effect. Then I reinstalled lightroom. No effect. Help please!

  • Install new firnware yesterday first thing I notice...

Install new firnware yesterday first thing I notice is a buzzzzzzzzzzzzz that before was not there, any one else have notice this, any solution?
    nhylo

I can't imagine any way the update could have been directly responsible for a noise of this sort, so I would be concerned that the buzzing sound may have been the result of something like the fan rubbing lightly against something as it spins, and then stopping when the fan or obstruction is sufficiently worn to cease fouling..... or the fan stops spinning altogether!
Just to be sure, keep an eye on the behavior of the system for a few days, making sure that you can detect the fan spinning up when the system is under heavy load.

  • There are problems w/ my iPhone first generation w/ the new July updates.

There are problems w/ my iPhone first generation w/ the new July updates. The phone runs slow now. Could not play certain songs on iPod. phone reset back to the home screen when I go to certain sites on the Internet. Use to be able to go on the Internet on the 7 train and the phone freezes sometimes.
The thing that ***** is that if u don't have wi-fi u can't use the iTunes icon and utube is not clear. Utube ***** anyway. The thing that would make the phone offical is if the iPhone had cable tv.

I hope someone can answer this one. My 1st gen was doing the exact same s*. and now it's completley dead. Even when you do a hard boot with both top and home buttons it gives you the apple of death. I've let it sit until the battery goes out.
I'm a network analyst/engineer and I'm stumped. I've tried everything. I finally gave in and set up and appointment with a "genius." I have a feeling they're gonna have to replace it or something. It wont even register on a mac or win laptop to do a reset. I'm screwed.
I expect to hear more about this issue. I almost thing the firmware might not be compatible with some of the hardware???
might have to give in and buy a new one.....

  • How can we suggest a new DBA OCE certification for very large databases?

How can we suggest a new DBA OCE certification for very large databases?
What web site, or what phone number can we call to suggest creating a VLDB OCE certification.
The largest databases that I have ever worked with barely over 1 Trillion Bytes.
Some people told me that the results of being a DBA totally change when you have a VERY LARGE DATABASE.
I could guess that maybe some of the following topics of how to configure might be on it,
    * Partitioning
    * parallel
    * bigger block size - DSS vs OLTP
    * etc
Where could I send in a recommendation?
    Thanks Roger

I wish there were some details about the OCE data warehousing.
Look at the topics for 1Z0-515. Assume that the 'lightweight' topics will go (like Best Practices) and that there will be more technical topics added.

  • "Speed bump" problem: when previewing on the iPad, the first page of each new chapter or section sticks and loads slowly.  How can I fix it?

I am building a book with text and photographs in iBooks Author, basing the design on my publisher's layout for the hard copy version.  Whenever I introduce a new section or chapter, I hit a "speed bump" when previewing on the iPad.  As you read, the first page of the new chapter or section is very hard to turn and sticks as it loads.  Within each section the pages flow very easily, but when you reach the next section you hit another speed bump. I have experimented with many possible solutions to no avail.  It does not seem to matter whether the new section has images or just text; the speed bump occurs regardless.

    Joel Pickford wrote:
However, I am finding that using fewer sections with more content in them minimizes the problem (i.e. fewer section-transions means fewer speed bumps).  This is contarary to the support page's suggestion of keeping chapters and sections smaller.  I am not having any problem within each section, even with lots of full page photos.
That recommendation was made, presumably, to reduce the length of the delay for each chapter. More content in the chapter means more delay when changing chapters. Of course, if you have lots of little chapters, the delay can still be annoying because, even if only four or five pages in a chapter, the delay is still noticable. Just pick something that works for your book and don't worry too much about the delay. Your readers will be familiar with it if they've seen more than one IBA book.
Will the choice of color space, s-rgb or Adobe rgb 1998, affect file size?
Should I try to compress them more- say, level 5 or level 4 in Save For Web?
Should I size the images for the iPad 2 instead of the iPad 3 retina display, since there are more 2s out there?
Which color space you use does not affect file size. Apple recommend to use sRGB, so I would stick with that. As to compression and sizing, only you can decide. Try and borrow an iPad 2 to make a judgement at what level of compression and resolution you think the images start too look bad. Your high-rez images for the new iPad will be down-sampled for display on the older models, which will introduce additional artifacts.
For my book, I simply used images at 1024 x 768 resolution. When viewed on a new iPad, they look just fine. The lower resolution is basically unnoticeable (at least for my purposes). You can view a sample of my book here: "Djembe Construction: A Comprehensive Guide". If you think the images there are good enough for your purposes, you could down-size your images to half their resolution, which will reduce file size about around a factor of three.

  • Uppercase first letter of every new sentence

    Hi Guys,
I am working on a design for a magazine for which, at the moment, I need to type a lot of the texts in InDesign instead of copy-pasting them from word or...
This made me a little annoyed since I don't get to uppercase each first letter of each sentence automatically like Word etc. do?
So: how can I automatically uppercase the first letter of each new sentence?
    Many thanks,
    Bob

Unbelievable that I only found this now and that it is that simple!
    Thanks!!

They probably can do such s thing if they choose to do so.
