First Time Backup - Looooong time?
I set up my TC last night, set up the wireless network and everything seems to work just grand. Connect to internet OK, still problems with connecting to Officejet 5610 (another story) but began the initial backup of my iMac. Well, started around 7pm last night, got up this morning at 6am and it was STILL backing up, with about 60GB done out of 85GB. Is this normal?
As for the printing issue, I print fine with the printer connected directly to the iMac USB, but not the TC USB. I can see the printer on the TC under Printer Utility and can add it, but when I try to assign it a driver, it isn't listed in the drop-down list. I've uninstalled, reinstalled the printer software, still same problem.
My first backup is finally finished (at long last!)
As for the printing issue: yes, I can add it and choose a driver when plugged directly to the iMac USB. But plugged into the Time Capsule USB I see it too, but the driver isn't displayed in the list of available drivers (although I see it when plugged directly into the iMac USB). I downloaded the latest driver from HP's website yesterday and still no change.
I guess I'll just have to forget wireless printing?

My Iphone 4 just updated to the iOS6. I've connected it to my computer for the first time since then, and wanted to back up my photos in iPhoto. However, although Iphoto recognized my phone, it shows no photos to upload or backup. It lists my phone in the "devices" category on the left bar, but no longer shows any of my photos.
Does anyone have any suggestions?I've reread your question several times and am not sure I understand it.
Are you trying to basically start over, as if you just took your iPhone out of the box? If so, do:
Settings > General > Reset > Erase all content and settings -
I recently bought a Time Capsule 2TB.
First I set it up to create a new wifi network parallel to my existing wifi network. The first Time Machine backup on my MBP 13 connected via ethernet cable finished overnight (under 10 hrs for about 150 GB), as expected.
Then I found that my MBP was logging into my old network more often than to the time capsule network so that backups were not being made regularly. So I re-configured the Time Capsule to extend the exisitng network - all fine. Except that now Time Machine said it couldn't find the existing backup. After trying logging out and in, etc. I eventually deleted that sparsebundle to force Time Machine to start again new.
Now I get an estimated time of 2 - 3 days for the first backup - even via ethernet cable. Sometimes it hangs up and says something like 4000 days... I can't afford to hook my MBP up to the time capsule or even stay at home for this time to let it finish, and I know it should be faster than that!
I've tried a few of the tips I found so far in the forums, such as excluding my home folder from Spotlight, or even turning Spotlight off, but nothing has helped so far. Perhaps I missed some important step on the way.
Can anyone give me a reliable step by tep method to solve this problem. I don't want a geeky workaround, I want to plug in (o better, be in my wifi network) and make the backup work like Time Machine is supposed to do it. And I would like to keep on using Spotlight, too.

RobinUnless you have a desktop Mac you can back up to over your network, your choices are:
Spend a bunch on a Time Capsule, kind of a waste if you already have a wireless router.
Spend $100 or so on an external HD and have some inconvenience until Iomega updates.
Risk losing all your data.
It's your call, but a no-brainer to me.
Better: get a portable external. Once you get the Iomega working, start making regular "clones" to the portable and take it off-site so you're also protected against fire, flood, theft, etc. -
Please help me restore my contacts from the backup in my laptop. When i took the backup the first time, i dont know where it took the backup. After that i tried restoring the contacts back to my iPhone, but was unable to. What can i do to findout where did the contacts go in my laptop? Please help asap.
Unfortunately, you have posted in the wrong community. However, I am not quite sure which community you should be posting in. Do you use iCloud for your contacts.

Hi,
I plugged my iPhone for the first time to my computer. The iTunes screen automatically came up and asked if I wanted to register/set-up my iPhone as new phone or using the backup from my iPod. Without knowing what was going to happen, I clicked on the backup from my iPod and then I lost everything I already had in my phone: mostly contacts and pictures. Although afraid of the answer, is there a solution to retrieving the info, especially the pictures?

hi, updated my iphone where in the middle of updated the screen showed i must connect to itunes. after connecting to itunes my iphone was updated but everything was deleted. was first time on itunes , so have no backup. can i recover my pics and contacts? please help

I have the current version of itunes, but when I go to update my ipod, I am getting an error message that says that it could not back up because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPod. This is the first time trying to backup the iPod. I have authorized my computer. Still no luck.
Go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and select the iPod backjp and click on delete and try again.

Hi, I hope this question won't seem too basic but if I want to use a new larger external drive for my time machine backups, will it do a new full backup the first time I plug it in and if so, do I really need all the old backups on my smaller external drive?

Yes, it will do a full backup.

Only if you want to be able to go back in time to those previous Time Machine backups. When you plug in the new larger external drive, you will only be able to go back as far as the first day you plugged it in and ran the first Time Machine backup on it. -
Please help me. I've just lost my iphone so I related to my backup contacts on icloud to get my contacts back. But my contacts only show at the first time and then they dissappeared, my contacts was empty. How can I see my contacts?
If they aren't on icloud.com they are no longer in iCloud. If you don't have another backup, I'm afraid they're gone.

First Time Machine backup not the same size as my computers HD
I just completed my first Time Machine backup of my computer's hard drive. I have a 160 GB hard drive (actual capacity = 148.73 GB) with 145.43 GB used. I expected my backup to be the exact same size or darn near close. When I did a "Get Info" on the backup, its size was 62.11 GB. I looked through some of the files of the backup and it LOOKS like its all there but can't be certain of it. I would like to know the answer to this and PLEASE PLEASE DON'T give me the run around! IE: go see this page, go see that page, click this link, etc.! Just give me the answer straight up. I've already been looking all over this forum and at other Time Machine websites and have NOT found a good answer. I would REALLY appreciate just a straight up answer! Thanks!

"Permission denied" on sparsebundle after first Time Machine backup
I've been using an encrypted sparsebundle for several months. Yesterday I bought a new Apple Airport Time Capsule, and created my first Time Machine backup. Today when I double-click the sparsebundle, instead of being prompted to enter my password, I receive a Warning dialog box saying "The following disk images couldn't be opened" with the sparsebundle listed next to "Permission denied." According to Get Info, my account does have Read & Write access to the sparsebundle.
How can I get access to my 4.5 GB of encrypted data?Thanks for the response. In my case, when I booted into my cloned backup and ran from that, I was able to open the sparsebundle normally. Then when I returned to my original system, it too worked normally. Although I'm relieved I didn't lose my data, it's all very mystifying. It particularly concerns me that no online source seems to be able to explain the nature of the error message I received!
I did repair permissions before posting here, to no avail.
So that terminal command will turn your encrypted sparsebundle into an unencrypted sparsebundle, without prompting for the password? That's alarming. -
This is a brand new MacBook Pro. This would be the first time machine backup being done on it. Is that why it is too slow?
Note that a 24 GB flash drive is completely inadequate to use effectively with Time Machine. It will probably run out of space very quickly. You want at least 2-3 times more space on your backup drive than what you are backing up. Or you want to choose some other backup app that does not do incremental backups.
Get yourself a good hard drive. 200 GB would be cheap and would give you more than enough space to store many months (maybe years) of backups, unless what is being backed up grows significantly.

Trying to use new 500GB external hard drive for backup for first time
I'm doing our normal Clonezilla Backup procedure and ran out of disk space for the first time. The normal person who does this is on vacation. I put the new hard drive in for the backup, but when I ran Clonezilla it didn't recognize it.
I looked in Server Manger and it shows it as Unknown with a red arrow and not initialized. It's shown as unallocated. What do I need to do at this point? Do you have instructions or a link to instructions? I'm new to working with servers,
etc. I probably need to format the new external drive but I'm not sure how. This is a simple server, without VM's, etc.

First Time Backup Using Ver. 7
After inserting my 3rd blank DVD during backup, the msg "tfswctrl.exe - wrong volume" (Please insert vol. Backup 2006-08-17 into drive E) appeared. The itunes screen indicates that music/data is still being written to the DVD. Am I safe to assume that itunes is in fact backing up? I responded to the msg with "continue".
Your post is confusing me a bit. You say you were backing up, but a backup is making a second copy of files in case you lose the first copy. Why did you then move the media folder to the trash? Drag it back to your iTunes folder.
Which tutorial did you follow? A link would help.
To properly back up iTunes the first time you would quite iTunes, copy (drag) the whole iTunes folder in your Home > Music to the external drive, disconnect the drive, then start iTunes as normal for continued use.
Perhaps you were trying to move your library to the external drive but if that's the case you need to say you want to move it, not back up. -

To do so, press Control-B on your keyboard. You should then see the menubar at the top of iTunes (see image below). You can then access the File menu and backup your device.

I am running my first time machine backup onto a Western Digital MyBook Live. It is taking forever. Is there antivirus software running in the background or any other settings I need to change to speed it up? Also I am on a wireless network.
The initial Time Machine backup can certainly take a long time over wireless. Days, possibly. It's impossible for anyone here to be able to predict how long it will take, and wireless environmental conditions can change at any time.

Only you can determine that. If you're using third party AV software, anything is possible.
NAS devices may not be compatible with Time Machine, regardless of what their manufacturers may claim. Even after the Time Machine backup completes, your backup may be unreliable. You may not discover that until you need to rely upon the backup for some reason, and corruption can occur months or years from now.
Time Machine supports the following backup configurations:
A locally mounted volume
Time Capsule
A volume resident on a USB hard disk connected directly to a Time Capsule or current production AirPort Extreme Base Station.
That's it. Any configuration other than the above list places you in an experimental category. If your backup fails, you're on your own.
