First time installation of tiger

GREETINGS!
i am on 10.2.8 on a gigabit ethernet 450do. it has never had the disk erased since i got it new, with os9.
i just got a 10.4.6 install replacement dvd from applecare.
when i finally get a clone made of my computer, should i erase the disk and install, being it is eight years old? i'm wondering if that wil give me any added performance, stability - or?
otherwise should/can i do an archive and install from 10.2.8 to 10.4.6?
last - and i know there is a lot of controversy over this - should i install the os on its own partition, and if so, how big should it be?
same for the external hd - it is brand new [today!] with nothing on it yet; should i partition that, and/or put the os on its own partition?
thanks very much - and happy thanksgiving!

Were I you I would make your clone then test the clone to be sure it will boot the computer. Then boot from the Tiger DVD and do an Erase and Install which will completely wipe the drive before installing Tiger.
Obviously you could partition the drive if you want but there is no compelling reason to do so.
If I were you I would also reformat the external drive before you clone to it and reformat the main drive as well:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. There is no SMART info for an external drive. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.

  • No connection! First time Installation of HomeHUB.

On the 8/11/2010 I had BT broadband installed for the first time, it is also the first time ever that there has been a phoneline inside my flat, i waited till midnight for the activation and its still not working the broadband light on my Homehub is a pale blue colour were as the power and wireless light are fully blue. Im not sure what the problem is but i think that the broadband has still not been activated yet does anyboby know whats going on and what to do about it?

    Hi Sideswipe and welcome
    Mmm, a few things:
    I'll assume it's a BT Home Hub V2.0 (black)
If the light is blue then it's connected (not sure why it's pale though)
It's when the light is off (No broadband signal), steady orange (Wired connection to broadband is OK, connecting to Internet service) or flashing orange (Connecting to broadband) that there could be a problem.
Also found this on a BT help section
Broadband light is blue but I can't connect to the Internet
Your Hub is connected to broadband, but there may be a problem with your computer and/or its connection to the Hub.
Restart your Hub by pressing and releasing the Restart button at the side of the Hub.
    Restart your computer.
Run BT Broadband Desktop Help. - IF you ran the frisbee (CD).
If you're using an Ethernet cable: check this cable between your Hub and computer is inserted correctly.
If you're using wireless: check that your computer's wireless adapter is fitted and/or turned on. Some laptop computers have a small switch - please refer to your computer manual if you need help.

  • Error message on first time installation of iTunes 10.2.2

Trying to install iTunes 10.2.2. on a laptop that has never has iTunes. I get error message: "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact you support personnel or package vendor". It goes on to install QuickTime and iTunes but neither will run as their .exe files seem to be missing. Have tried uninstalling and re-installing (4 times), running as administrator, disabling anti-virus and firewalls but no success. Any further offers? Thank you.

    You can try the following:
    1. Use the Control panel > software uninstall > to remove Quicktime, Bonjour, Apple Software Update, Apple Mobile Device Support, and iTunes if they are there.
    2. Search on the internet for the MS Installer Cleanup Utility (it's supposed to be discontinued but you can still down load it elsewhere - msicuu.exe - and install it.
    3. Run the Cleanup utility as an administrator and look in the list of programs to see if any of the above programs are still listed. If so, uninstall them with the utility. (Be careful! Don't select all the programs in the list you get - that deletes all installed programs. Only do the Apple ones listed above)
    4. Open cmd.exe as an administrator. Type "netsh winsock reset" and press enter.
    5. Reboot
    6. Download a fresh copy of iTunes 10.5 from www.itunes.com and install.
    7. If all this works, you can uninstall the Install Cleanup Utility if you like.
    Hope it works.

  • Cannot override codebase to use local files for first time installation.

I have an application that is installed via a JNLP link. The application is about 200MB and we use a web start so that each time the application starts it checks for updates in the configuration and downloads them if necessary.
I have a requirement to provide an offline installation on CD as some of our users have very slow connection speeds and it's taking over an hour to download the binaries.
I am trying to do the install using the command line javaws -import -codebase <linktolocaldir> <linktojnlp>
I need to use the jnlp on the sever so that the configuration files are checked and downloaded each time it starts.
However the local codebase is never used - the dialog always says that it is downloading from the server, I can only get it to install from the local drive if I change the path directly in the JNLP (which is no good as I need to keep this path pointing to the server)
Is there any other way to override the codebase for the initial installation?
    Any help much appreciated.

    CCC put up a message that there was a Physical Problem  "Library/Application Support/Techtool Protection/McIntosh HD/Directory Backup 2011-11-01-16-28-16"
You should not keep those files for long, and probably shouldn't back them up (if you need them at all -- since you do regular backups, I'm doubtful just how worthwhile that feature is).
"Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume".
One of Apple's maddeningly incomplete messages. Most likely, there's a problem with a file (quite possibly the one CCC didn't like).  See #C3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for details and instructions on finding and fixing it.
If you continue running the Directory Protection app, be sure to exclude your Time Machine drive from it (as it will just take up lots of room, and won't help repair your backups if there's a problem);  and exclude the folders it creates from being backed-up by Time Machine (as they'll create large backups, and you probably can't use the backed-up folders anyway), per #10 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

  • VMWare vs. Bootcamp for first time installation...thoughts?

I've got an early 2008 MacPro 2.8ghz with 10gb of RAM. I have 300gb and 500gb internal hard drives; the 300gb drive is the OS X start-up drive.
I'm looking to install the Win 7 beta and eventually buying Win 7 when it's released so I can run a few Windows programs (like a non-crippled version of Excel, one that supports VB and macros).
Would I be better off buying VM Fusion 2.0 or going with Bootcamp. I'm primarily interested in a) stability; b) speed when running under either operating system; c) installation ease. Hot-swapping is appealing but not essential if it means significantly compromising stability or speed.
Also, can I install the Win 7 partition on the second 500gb drive to allow for a bigger dedicated Win partition. I have 100gb left on the Mac OS drive, and using it for Win 7 would probably leave me with a too-small Win partition while simultaneously limiting my OS X space.

Thanks much, but can I get one clarification? When you say "pull" my OS X drive, I'm not sure I'm following you. Don't I need to run Bootcamp from my OS X drive to begin the Win 7 installation?
I've never tried installing Win on a Mac (6-yr Mac user, 25-yr PC/Win user). I'm guessing your saying I should physically pull the OS X drive to take it out of play, then boot from the Win install disk and choose the remaining drive?

  • ILM First Time Installation Fails with compilation errors

I am using database version 10.1.0.4.2, and Apex version 3.0.0.00.20,
These both are on the same machine.
I login with sqlplus as sysdba and run
    @ilma_install apex sysaux none
    Following happens after running it:
    - It runs for a while creating different objects
    - then gives warning : view created with compilation error
    - then gives warning : view created with compilation error
    - then gives warning : view created with compilation error
    - then runs for a while
    - then gives error Package body created with compilation errors
    Errors for package body ILM_SYS_TOOLKIT
    Line/col Error
    1646/3 PLSQL: SQL Statement Ignored
    1647/22 PLS-009050 : Object ILM_Toolkit.ILM_Schedular_Steps is invalid
    Then the installation terminates.
    Please help.
    regards

I am sorry to hear that you are still having difficulties with the installation. I set up a system that is as close to your configuration as I could replicate, with a 10gR1 database and Apex 3.0, and did not have any issue installing the ILM Assistant.
It is possible that your install kit may have been corrupted during the modifications. I could build a new kit with the proper changes for your setup and send this directly to you if you would like.
Alternatively, the problem may be with your Application Express installation. Try to verify that this was installed properly, and that the underlying schema account (FLOWS_030000) is unlocked and that you are using its proper password when installing ILM.
    Thanks,
    Adam

  • After first time installation, system did not restart, just hanged.

    Hello
I am new to ur world of mac.
I tried to install os x 10.4 on an intel pc.
All went excellent. But at the end when it said to restart,
it just hanged there and did not restart.
I used the reset button, but it didn't boot
    error message was "B0 error"

That is right - upgrade to Mac as in purchase a Mac which now have Intel processors and the ability to also install and use Windows XP or Vista along with OS X on the same computer.
I wonder if u have gone thru Apple's OS X license agreement recently?
I have gone through the Apple website recently but I don't need to. Regardless, the answer remains the same and will not change. If you want to run OS X, you need to purchase a Mac.

    Bt Broadband: (8am - 1pm)
    Landlind: (1pm - 6pm)
Doesn't the engineer need the landline to install Internet I'm wooried it wont be installed
so I phone BT and the woman told me basically there is nothing she can do apart from re schedule. Anyone known of this?

  • First time installation with WRT54GX2 and having problems...

Attempting to setup my wireless network and used the setup disk and that a wireless broadband g router is not found, make sure power is on and all connections are correct.  After confirming this I download the easylink and it says that wired lan needs to be enabled.  Check status and it is.  Try to access web based utility, 192.168.1.1, it asks for username and password.  put it the default admin in password and it attempt to load the web utility with no success.  It let attempt for about 20 minutes or so with the windows icon in the top right hand corner waving.  I'm using a different router from my previous setup that I had in another apartment.  I was using the befw11s4 with the cox high speed internet with no problem.  Moved in new place with bellsouth dsl (according to website dynamic ip) with router wrt54gx2 and can't get it setup.  I have 2 desktops, PS3, and Nintendo Wii that I want sharing internet connection.  I need some advice.

Make sure all your devices are wired correctly then with a WIRED pc connected to the router open your browser.  Then when your browser is open type in http://192.168.1.1 and enter your password if you changed it.  That will get you into the routers set up page.  Since you have a DSL connection set the router to use PPPoE and enter the user name and password provided by your ISP and save settings.  Also you may want to set the Keep Alive setting to 30 seconds.  Then go to the wireless tab and configure your SSID to something you can identify has your wireless network and set the rest of the settings as your network requires. You may need to open your ports if needed for your PS3 and Wii.
