[FIXED-ish] Updating: Pacman wants to remove /usr/

error: cannot remove file '/usr/': Read-only file system
error: could not commit removal transaction
error failed to commit transaction (cannot remove all files for package)
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded
Not sure why pacman wants to remove /usr... Also, /usr is not read-only, it's mounted as rw.

Okay, so I managed to somehow fix it after rebooting a million times (both soft reboot and hard reboot). Ran into a few mounting problems, ran into a few kernel panics, finally fixed all of the problems, but I don't know how/why. I would really like to know why everything was acting up so I can prevent it. So I'm going to detail everything that happened.
I decided I would like to game again, but not have to reboot into Windows. So to get a quick fix of my gaming dose, I decided to install a few games on Linux, and I added the gaming repo to my pacman.conf. I also wanted to use sage instead of excel, matlab, maple, and mathematica [and magma]. However, installing a few of my games and sage filled both /opt, /usr and /var to 100%. I was able to increase /opt and /usr easily because they were jfs. /var required me to go into my rescue cd. Then /usr ran out of space again, so I had to increase that again (/usr is now really fragmented, which I am not happy about). After I installed sage and most of the games I wanted, I decided to upgrade my system.
That's when I ran into the issue of removing '/usr/'. I tried a couple of times, hoping that it would fix itself, and then posted here. I installed a few more games without a problem, tried upgrading again with no success. Then I rebooted, Reboot process was fine. Still ran into the issue though. Tried upgrading again, and some packages upgraded partially (complained about not being able to write), most ran into the removing '/usr/' issue. I tried to startx, but ran into configuration errors, and I couldn't use my keyboard or mouse, so I hard rebooted.
Reboot went fine, I tried upgrading again. Pacman complained about files already existing, so I backed those up, and removed them. Tried upgrading again, kernel upgrade warned about not being mounted. So I tried to mount /boot, and it complained that ext2 was not a recognized filesystem. So I rebooted, ran into some module errors. I booted into the rescue CD, put back the modules I had backed up, and rebooted into the system. It booted up just fine. I upgraded, and it worked, except /boot still had trouble mounting. I booted into the rescue CD again, mounted the root filesystem into /mnt and the /boot partition into /blah, and copied the contents of /mnt/boot to /blah. Unfortunately, I forgot that would also override my grub configurations. So it ran into a kernel panic. After a few more reboots, I finally fixed the problem by replacing menu.lst with menu.lst~, and linking grub.conf to menu.lst. Now everything is working fine.
The issues I want to prevent from happening again is /usr mounted as read-write, but recognized as read-only, ext2 not being recognized (I can now mount /boot just fine). I would also like to know if it's possible that some of the packages weren't fully upgraded. If so, how can I get pacman to find them and re-install those packages.

  • How can I remove a Disabled Extension not compatible with Firefox 4.0.1? I just want to remove it... I don't want to wait for a compatible update. Why can't I remove it?

When I upgraded from 3.XX to 4.0.1, it informed me that 2 extensions were not compatible and it never gave me the option to remove them. Firefox 4.0.1 disabled them and now I'm not able to remove them.
Also they were added by Acrobat Pro X (Adobe Acrobat - Create PDF 1.0) and Nokia Ovi Suite (Firefox Synchronisation Extension 7.3.4.51).
These extensions won't probably be updated unless they update the software that installed them. With this said, How can I remove the disabled extensions? Why it doesn't give me a button to remove them to start with?

I think it's not the problem of compatibility. Extensions installed into Windows registry won't have a remove button ( or it's greyed out ). For these extensions, you can have a look into these keys:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mozilla\Firefox\Extensions\
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Mozilla\Firefox\Extensions\
If you are under a 64bit OS as I am, you may also try this key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Mozilla\Firefox\Extensions\
And you may find the registry entries corresponding to the extensions you want to remove. Just export them to a backup.reg, then delete these entries. Firefox will do the rest, but it seems that fx still leaves extensions.rdf untouched. You can also delete the RDF entries corresponding to those extensions inside extensions.rdf
    cf: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_add-ons#Windows_Registry_extension
BUT the Wow6432Node key wasn't mentioned in the above article
I had to search the registry to find out the entry corresponding to a Fiddler2 extension, then I found the Wow6432Node key. I also saw the Nokia Ovi Suite entry beside the Fiddler2 entry.
    Hope it helps.

Had you never backed up the phone before? When you saw the iTunes logo and cable, the device was in recovery mode. The data was already lost. The only way to recover from that is to restore the device, which will delete all of your data. You will only be able to restore to your last backup, whenever that was. Sorry this happened, but this highlights the importance of doing regular backups. The backup is the only protection you have against a problem like this.

  • Recently I am getting a message when I try to sync photos to my iPad from my PC in iTunes suggesting that photos already on the iPad will be removed if I sync.  I don't want to remove existing photos.  Any ideas?I

I am trying to copy photos from a recent vacation to my iPad2.  The process was straightforward using iTunes until recently. Now I am getting a message warning me that if I sync photos from the folder on my PC to iTunes and my iPad, photos already on the iPad (except ones taken by the iPad) will be removed.  I am running iOS 8.0.2 and the most recent iTunes update. I do not want to remove all the other photos from my iPad, so I cancel the sync.  I have tried copying the photos using the Apple SD card connector, but it does not recognize my SD card (it does recognize an SDHC card, but I am unable to copy the photos to that card).  Is anyone else gettinga message like what I describe above when trying to sync photos to an iPad2 in iTunes?

It is really a very simple fix. Place ALL of the photos that you want to sync to the iPad into one photos folder and sync that folder to the iPad. In your case, place the next set of photos that you want to sync, into the folder with the first set of photos that you already synced to the iPad. You can only sync from one main photos folder and if you choose another folder that does not include the photos that you previously synced, those photos will be erased from the iPad - as you have now discovered.
You can sync one level of sub folders with the main photos folder. You can have as many sub folders as you want (as long as you have the storage space available on the iPad) but you can only sync from one main photos folder. After you place all of the photos into the one main folder, when you go to the Sync Photos From drop down menu in iTunes, select that main photos folder and all of the sub folders that you placed in there will appear and you can select each sub folder to sync as well.

Sounds to me like openssl is installed on your system but the info on it is now missing from the local pacman database (/var/lib/pacman/local).  In other words, pacman forgot that you installed it.  So in your second clip of code, pacman is complaining that files belonging to openssl exist in your filesystem, since you do have it installed but it no longer knows that.
Don't know if this is the proper way to fix it, but I imagine forcing a reinstall of openssl (pacman -Sf openssl) should get pacman to reinstall openssl so that it knows it is installed.
    Bregol,
    pacman -Sf openssl
seemed to have fixed it.  Did not know of the force reinstall option.  The necessary directories in /var/lib/pacman/local/openssl have been created.

  • Want to remove quicktime and keep Itunes

    Hi all -
Quicktime on Windows is one the worst pieces of software I have ever experienced. I just want it removed from my pc, but the problem is that I like Itunes, and Itunes requires Quicktime to run. Is there a way around this?
I have to remove Quicktime because it somehow keeps hijacking my file associations and it breaks flash (read: youtube) every time it does this. After editing Quicktime Preferences this fixes it, but for some reason Quicktime grabs the associations again after every Apple update, which is annoying as ****. Is there any way to remove it and keep Itunes working??
    Message was edited by: MikeDeezy

iTunes needs Quicktime to run. The earliest version of Quicktime that the latest version of iTunes will work with is 7.1.6. I'm currently using Quicktime 7.3.1. I can't watch some videos from the iTunes store, but music plays fine which is all I need. Using 7.3.1 also means some vulnerabilities won't be patched. I don't go to sketchy Web sites, and I always use a regular user account for daily computing instead of an Administrator account.

  • OS 4.6 wants to remove Docs To Go!

I have an AT&T Bold which comes with Documents to Go version 1.001.145.  However, after registering and checking for updates, the application was updated to version 1.005.030 (even though it still says 1.001.145 in the Applications list!).
I have Desktop Manager 4.6 installed, and installed AT&T's BlackBerry Bold 9000 OS v4.6.0.167 - same as the version that came with the Bold.
Here's the problem.  If I have the Bold OS installed, when I go to add an application using the Application Loader, the App Loader doesn't recognize Docs to Go and INSISTS on removing it.  I tried removing DocumentsToGo.alx as well as all the DocsToGo*.cod from the OS and Java directory, as well as removing the reference from specification.pkg, but it still insisted on removing the application!
My temporary work around was to rename the OS directory to "9000-v4.6.0.167_P4.0.0.157.$$$" which stops Loader from wanting to remove Docs to Go, but what am I supposed to do if I decide I want to make a change in the OS?
As it stands now, it appears that what I'd have to do is allow Loader to remove the updated application, then run Loader again to reinstall the older version, re-register the newly installed application, and then update again!  That's a bit much!!
I'm guessing that Loader doesn't like the fact that the application SAYS it's version 1.001.145, but all the COD files say it's version 1.005.030 and wants to remove the conflict!
I tried going to the DataViz site for support, but was directed to the BlackBerry support site - where there was nothing available!
RIM / DataViz, it is impolite to point - especially at each other!  This is a STUPID MISTAKE!  Is one of you (DataViz - it looks like it's YOUR mistake!) going to fix this?
    Jerry

If I go to application loader - it says, "downgrade" on my words to go.   Wonder how to fix that
