Fixing a Macintosh 512k! Broken mesh

I bought this Macintosh 512k which won't turn on for 30 bucks.
The guy who sold it to me said "the last time it worked, I heard an explosion and there was a lot of smoke".
I opened it and the only thing I saw that was wrong was this:
There are no broken capacitors and everything seems to be okay.
Now, the question is: can I fix that? Maybe bridging with a wire or something.

I would follow Jan's advice totally. Safety and tracing causation are important. Having said that, my mind moved on to what might have caused the problem in the first place. Let me give an example.
Take apart a non-functioning vcr and you might find crayons that a child has poked into the device. Remove the crayons and the vcr might work just fine again. What if a foreign object got into the compter?
We have taken computers apart, only to find a loose screw under the motherboard. The screw was shorting something out, causing a malfuntion. Remove the screw and the computer goes back to normal.
Without knowing the cause of the problem, we are free to speculate! The image makes me wonder if dust, a paperclip, staple or other small metal object may have bridged the two 'wires' and caused a short. The heat from the short may have caused the damage at both ends. If, big emphasis on IF, such was the cause of the damage, then simply restoring continuity would be just fine. At a minimum, we can conclude that it is heat related damage.
The physician's creed of 'do no harm' is what Jan is warning to avoid. My two cents would be "what do you have to lose?"
Radio Shack sells (sold?) copper paint for the task. Do a web search for 'conductive paint circuit board' for other sources. Obviously, the contacts will have to be cleaned, soldered and resealed to give a good connection and protection but what you use is up to you. It is well out of warranty!

Macintosh 512k floppy drive shows ? then X

I recently acquired a Macintosh 512k from 1984 with all the original floppy disks and manuals!
The computer starts up with a "happy mac" face then shows a ? asking for software. When I insert the system disk, the computer spits it out and then shows an X. I tried cleaning the drive with a floppy cleaner with no results. I double checked the disks in another computer that read them perfectly. So it appears I need a new floppy drive or need to clean it really well. The drive operated mechanically fine, just won't read the disks.
Any ideas? I'm am willing to take it apart, but from what I have read cleaning might not fix it. .

I suppose FDD is malfunction. Repalce it if you can.

Attachments - why fix what wasn't broken!

Prior to OX Lion, when an email arrived with attachments you were able to select them individually (or more using command-click) and drag them to whichever folder you liked directly from mail. Now all you get is to save them individually or all at once and the process has increased from 1-click (and drag) to as many clicks as it takes to locate the folder you want them saved in ('recent folders' is cool if you only deal with a few folders - we use dozens of folders). We design and produce magazines and receive a lot of attachments and the new mail has increased our workflow by thousands of clicks - VERY DISAPPOINTING.
You also were able to open attachments directly from mail as well (using right-click), you can't do that anymore either!
Anyone know a work-around?
I see THUNDERBIRD still allows you to select and drag attachments.
Another example of some idiot fixing what ain't broken!

Hi The best option is to do a factory Reset this will get rid of any bugs And set up iPad as new. Just use same Apple ID you will get all your Apps & Data back. Do this over Wifi Cheers Brian

Does the Macintosh 512k Enhanced use a VGA connection?

I've been thinking about sticking my mac mini inside one of these things.. I'm just woundering what connection the CRT monitor uses. Is it VGA?

Nope, it's not VGA. The modern-computer-in-vintage-clothing hack is generally done by replacing the CRT with a modern LCD of similar size. I.e.:

Droid DNA was a good phone - HTC please fix what you have broken

I just got the latest update and I really don't care for the new interface. I have talked to Verizon and HTC and both say the only way to get the older version is to root the phone which will take it out of warranty. Not that I really care about the warranty however I will need to spend more time than I care to just go back to a version that worked properly. Easier to just get a new phone, granted I will need to learn the new phone but at least it will be an upgrade so the investment of my time will seem worth it.
What upsets me the most is they will not let me go back to my previous version. I would be perfectly happy with the version I was running before. It had it's issues but I was used to them. The latest upgrade has changed things that I used daily for fixes that I rarely or never use. For example, the landscape keyboard is broken, I cannot see the P and L keys. The person at HTC recommended I find another keyboard online and download it. Not the answer I expected from the manufacturer but it does help me make a decision.
I was planning on getting the HTC One next but after this I will be getting another phone (sooner than planned) and it will not be a phone from HTC. It may not even be an Android phone, maybe Windows 8. I have heard the latest iPhone upgrade was subpar as well.

InDesign issue fixed why was it broken?

I just purchased the design package cs5 included Photoshop, illustrator, and indesign.
Photoshop and illustrator worked as they have in the past with no problems. This is the first time I have used InDesign and it did not work.
Most of the mouse clicks did not do anything etc. After reading the help forums, I changed to my default font size ( the 60 year old eyes liked the larger fonts), and fixed the problem.
Now why would one product need the fix while other products work? I have around 4 to 7 hours invested in finding that issue, with the frustration of the broken software.
I should add I started with Photoshop; CS2 when it was new, and I can hold my own, I can sell my work. I have 3 months with Illustrator and I am learning fast.
I am not a rank beginer as I go back to before Microsloth.
So I shall say it Adobe should not have this issue with InDesign.
If I sound frustrated sorry for that, but I do feel better for it.

DW unexpectedly quits; can't change sites [added:a fix for Macintosh OS X]

If your Dreamweaver application was working wonderfully, you were doing a lot, making many sites etc. and suddenly DW stopped uploading to your remote site or just would not allow you to change sites, then read on...
Manage sites, change site causes Dreamweaver to quit unexpectedly. Macintosh OS X (may be on other systems too)
The issue may be in your preferences...
On a Mac, go to your folders main hardrive>Users>Library>Preferences=Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 Prefs.
NOTE: That is NOT the same Library folder as your computer (Apple has two Library folders with a preferences folder inside each; if you don't see that file called: Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 Prefs, find the other Library folder with the exact file name. It won't show up with the "find/search" feature either.
Move that file to your desktop/finder and restart DW.
Dreamweaver will create a new Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 Prefs (yes, it will wipe out your saved preferences but that's not as bad as NOT being able to use the DW application at all).
Your sites will be intact, classic view will probably be default (it will take less time to reset your windows and panes than other methods of fixing DW).
Once it works then you don't need that old prefs file and can trash it. Note that a new one is in the Library>Preferences folder anyhow.
Check Dreamweaver>Preferences and go through your settings again.

How to clean and fix up Macintosh 128k?

I recently received an original Macintosh 128k (M0001), and would like to use it. I have the ImageWriter, mouse, keyboard, and disks. The mouse and keyboard have been cleaned, but I was wondering how/where I can get the Macintosh and printer cleaned. Anything else? I have tried booting up the computer (without disks), and luckily, no Sad Mac appeared!
So,is there anyone out there who is good with classic Macs?

The original 128k Mac is very valuable, they're worth hundreds even in average condition. This one sold for almost $3000.
The sizzling sound may be arcing due to a failing high voltage (flyback) transformer. Charge attracts dust, which tends to be slightly conductive, which causes current to leak around the flyback and accelerate its demise. Simply cleaning all the black dust off the conductors may fix it, but when the internal winding insulation degrades it will eventually fail. Fortunately parts are readily available and not terribly expensive. When the flyback transformer fails it's easiest to simply replace the entire "analog / power" board, but the transformers are available too. CRTs themselves last practically forever - burn-in is the issue with them.
Classic Macs are easy to fix, but don't crack the case unless you are familiar with electronics and especially the high voltages used for CRTs. Apple used bleeder resistors but if it failed open you'd have no way of knowing.
I have not had a single problem with Imagewriter printers. No rubber degradation whatsoever. Vacuum out the dust once in a while and drop a very tiny bit of light machine oil on the carriage slide if it becomes dry. If it becomes dry linear scratches will appear. Avoid using alcohol on the platen. The print heads themselves will eventually wear out but they're easily replaced too. Replace the ribbons before they become too worn or you will accelerate the print head's demise also.
I routinely use a 24 year old Imagewriter II with my OS X Lion iMac. It's never needed any attention. They're bulletproof.

Fix for Weak and Broken Wifi

I ran into an annoying issue when I brought my iPad home to Singapore. It worked great in the U.S. on my LINKSYS WRT54G router (G-only network setup). However, it would intermittently connect and disconnect and eventually refused to connect at all to my home wifi network running on a DLINK DIR-655 extreme wireless N router. First, I updated my router firmware to the latest to no avail. I also tried disabling all the security settings on the router and that also didn't work. When I set the router to wireless N ONLY, then the iPad could connect with full strength. But alas, my 2nd Gen iPod touch began getting the same errors that the iPad previously did. I tried setting the network to G-only, and the iPod touch connected but the iPad would not. Ughhh. So, I tried mixed G and N networks and that didn't seem to work until I locked down the channel width to 20MHz. Now that all that was finally working, I enabled security and locked down the network to WPA2 / AES and everything is finally working properly and securely.
I ran through all the combinations and permutations of settings to find that the main culprit was the need to specify Mixed Mode G+N along with a fixed 20MHz channel width. Not allowing wider channel bandwidth means that my wireless N devices will run a bit slower, but at least everything is talking now and is fast. The range is also very good on all my devices (even the new iPad). I hope that Apple fixes whatever handshaking protocol problem they have in the iPad to allow it to connect more robustly without having to fiddle around with different combinations of wireless settings like I did.
FYI, the DLINK DIR-655 only has a 2.4GHz radio in it, so A networks and dual-band N networks are not possible to create using this hardware. I know that Apple's wireless N gear is using the dual-band specification, so that might have something to do with it. I do hope that these technical details help someone else in the same boat as I was and maybe can give you some ideas on what to tweak to get everything working properly on your own networks with the iPad in the mix. Hopefully, someone can forward this workaround to Apple so that they can further expedite their Wifi fix.

I've been using the 881U without the Sierra Watcher program installed, you can just add the drivers for the card. I'm not sure what the Sierra Watcher adds but the card is terrific.
I have noticed that the speed is only about 1mb down and 300k up which is slower than on my PC notebook. Not sure if this is because of the network or just using it with the Air.

Apple, I have an iPhone 5 and the purple tint in pictures is real and is going to be the most costly mistake to have changed the lens to a sapphire crystal lens. This is HUGE! Why did you fix what is not broken?

Why, because some clumsy, careless humans couldn't stop scratching a less that 1/4 inch wide lens? That is no reason for replacing the lens and pandering to their inability to handle advanced technology is not going to push the technology forward. Tossing out cheap cases like you did for the imagined iPhone 4 antenna "problem" will not fix this VERY real problem. I have been a loyal customer since 2005 and this, as stated in the title, could be your most costly mistake. Either your software engineers are going to have to compensate for the purple tint appearing in photos or you're going to sacrifice massive profits to physically replace the lens in every iPhone 5 you have sold and continue to sell. I've read that Apple customer service has tried to sweep this away by falsely claiming that the purple tint is "normal". It is absolutely not normal by any stretch of the imagination. Do not be silent Apple customers! Let the complaints pour like Niagara Falls or settle for the garbage that has been sold.
My former iPhone 4 took better pics.
I hope Apple didn't do the same with the pending iPad mini or this could turn into a maelstrom that even Steve Jobs would not have tolerated.

Between being still wet, and energized multiple times, it almost certainly has suffered permanent damage from shorting circuits. I would just get a replacement at this point and be done with it.
As mentioned, either an AppleCare+ accidental damage claim, if you can do so, or pay the out of warranty replacement for a like new service unit.

Stupid Question: Suppress Warnings vs Fixing What Ain't Broken

Hey all,
I'm getting about 70 warnings in my code, mostly because I'm using anonymous classes to set up Actions as shown in the code snip below. This generates the warning "The serializable class does not declare a static final serialVersionUID field of type long" every time I create an Action this way:

My question is, which is less of a hack? Do I just throw in a few SuppressWarnings annotations, or should I add a default serialVersionUID in each anonymous class? I'm not using the serialization functionality, but I might want to sometime in the future in which case suppressing the warnings would be a bad idea. Both solutions (adding a field I don't need or suppressing warnings instead of fixing them) seem a bit kludgey to me. Am I just being too touchy, or is there a better way?

Thanks for the input, that does make quite a bit of sense. I suppose my hesitation comes from the feeling that although I was told by the higher-ups to "fix those warnings", all I'm doing is concealing them. I guess I shouldn't look at it that way, especially since I don't use serialization at all in any of my code (nobody else does, either). So in this case, simply suppressing the warnings probably makes more sense than adding fixes that won't be used anyway (and in fact may mislead future developers into thinking I'm using serialization somewhere).

It's not broken, it just means that the iPad has gone into recovery mode : http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808
You will need to connect the iPad, via its cable, to a computer's iTunes (you will need an up-to-date version of iTunes installed on the computer), and you should then be able to reset the iPad and restore/resync the content to it.
