Flash CS3 debugger - how to use?

I'm used to the AS2 debugger... the CS3 one is not working
for me... when i choose Debug Movie, I see a "Debug Console" and a
"Variables" window, and the movie loads in the external Flash
Player... but nothing shows up in the windows and the only button
that works is the End Debug Session button (red X). What am I doing
wrong here?
Thanks,
SB

if you're wanting to look at the contents of variables,
unlike the AS2 debugger, the movie needs to be paused, for example
at a breakpoint. Once the movie's paused variables will appear in
the 'Variables' window.

  • Flash CS3 Debugger works only sometimes

I have an ActionScript 3.0 Flash file (.FLA) that simply does
not seem to want to stop at any breakpoints or otherwise show up in
    the debugger.
If I take the code on its one single layer of script, copy it
into a new AS3 Flash file, and debug it, the debugger works
correctly. However, even if I strip every single symbol and object
from the original file, and leave it with just trivial placeholder
code (attached), the file will not stop at a breakpoint or run any
of the other Flash CS3 debugger functions. Instead, I see the code
in the debugger, and the program running as if the debugger weren't
even present. Sometimes I get an X button on the debug console that
allows me to terminate the program, sometimes not even that.
The Output window shows the standard lines:
Attemping to launch and connect to Player using URL <path
    to my SWF>
    [SWF] <my SWF's location> - 792 bytes after
    decompression
15 [ <--- result of the attached placeholder code ]
The Publish settings for the faulty document are - as far as
I can tell - identical to the new file:
Flash is the only format being exported
Version is set to Flash Player 9
    Load order is Bottom up
AS version is 3.0 with all items checked, no export class,
    and frame 1 export
    Compress movie is checked
At some point I also checked Permit debugging, but it doesn't
    seem to make any difference
    All other options are default
I manually downloaded and installed the Debug version of
Flash Player 9.0.124.0 earlier, but since the "clean" file debugs
correctly, I don't think this is the problem.
I've also tried a number of other steps, including Save and
Compact and just about everything else I could think of.
I have several files like this in my project. Are they doomed
never to work with the debugger? Is something wrong with my Flash
    installation?

  • Flash CS3 debugger window background color

Is there any way to get Flash CS3 to use the same background
color from your actionscript settings in the debugger? It's always
light gray--I like to use a black background for my actionscript,
but now I'm probably going to have to change to gray since it
appears the debugger ALWAYS uses a gray background regardless of
your settings? (My text is white and I can't see it against the
    debugger background)
Is there any way to change this?

I would know how to use the debugger in Oracle Forms 6i ...
Tx in advance for your help,

    Open_form('D:\Forms\creer_dossier.fmx');
    Go_block('dossier');
    :dossier.ouverture := sysdate;
    :dossier.num_dossier := :global.num_dossier;

  • Web debugger - How to use

    Hi,
I try to debug some ITS transaction, I placed HTTP breakpoint, debugger shows in browser, but F5 and other debugger keys are not working, so how to use this web debugger?
    Many thanks for answer!

    Hi Mahesh,
Just put a break point in your code, may be in the Wddoinit or you can put a break point at a place where you want to check for a specific variable or value, the same way as you do in General ABAP.
When you run the WD application and control comes to the break point you can automatically see the Debugger.
    Regards,
    Ismail.

  • Flash CS3 Debugger not recognizing keyboard input

I am trying to debug a piece of code involving a keystroke.
While debugging, when I hit the key the first time, the breakpoint
is triggered. But after the breakpoint, the debugger simply ignores
any other keystrokes. I'm trying to see what happens when the key
is pressed a second time so you can see why this is frustrating me.
I'm running Flash CS3 on an intel iMac. The program is
    written in AS3.
Is this a known issue? Are there any workarounds?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Flash CS4/AS3 - How to use a preloader with FLVs?

Somehow I've had a really hard time finding a straightforward forum answer or tutorial for this--maybe someone can help?
I have an SWF file that references/loads an external FLV file (www.44designs.com/promo_video.php), but since the FLV file is about 9MB and can take time to load on a slower connection, I think a preloader (something simple like "LOADING...100%") would be a good idea as the FLV loads.
Anyone have a simple way to do this??  I've had no success in finding what I need--just scripts for loading SWFs.  You can see an example of this on www.44designs.com where a preloader script I've got seems to be referencing the SWF (thus loading almost immediately) instead of the much larger external FLV.  Make sense?  I'm not super AS3 savvy, but I can follow logic and cut and paste

Great info, thanks for the post!

  • Can I use AS2 in Flash CS3 ?

Is it possible to use in Flash Cs3 the AS2 and not just AS3 ?
I am only trying to do a web link from a button to some web
    site.....
    I wrote
    on (release) {
    getURL ("
    http://www.yahoo.com", "_blank");
and nothing happen....some women here asked same question a
month ago...people told her it is different from the AS2.....still
    I cant used AS2 in falsh cs3 ?
    or can I ?

you can mix as1 and as2 in an swf created in flash cs3 or you
can use as3 in a swf created in flash cs3. but you cannot mix as3
with either of the other two languages.
use the publish settings to choose which language you want to
    use in your swf.

  • Flash CS3, Having Problems Creating Button Animation

I am relatively new to Flash CS3, and don't use action script... I am creating an animation with sound using the button graphic option so it is a clickable button. I have the animation finished, and the sound embeded, and everything is working great, except when I publish it, I have to click and hold over the graphic for the animation to happen... If I click and release, the animation and sound clips stop... What am I doing wrong and how on Earth can I fix it??? Thank you in advance for any suggestions!!

Yup, that is how it works. You can't control which state a button is in. So when you click on it, it will go to the down state and when you let go it will go back to over (or up if you release outside).
Not sure exactly what the "fix" is. It depends upon what you are trying to do. Generally you would need to use MovieClips instead of buttons with event handlers to tell you "button" what to do. Very few people I know actually use buttons.

  • Trial download of Flash CS3 was not completed: does this mean I can't download it again?

A few weeks back I started to download the trial version of Flash CS3 (I am still using Flash 8, but have a CS3 file created elsewhere that I want to re-save as Flash 8). Unfortunately the internet link was broken when only about 80% had downloaded. Adobe has assumed I have the download - does this mean that I cannot try downloading it again? (When I attempt to do so there is a brief flurry of activity, then nothing happens.)

if you follow all 7 steps you can dl a trial here:  http://prodesigntools.com/download-adobe-cs4-and-cs3-free-trials-here.html
    and activate with your serial.
if you have a problem dl'g, you didn't follow all 7 steps.  the most common error involves failing to meticulously follow steps 1,2 and/or 3 (which adds a cookie to your system enabling you to download the correct version from adobe.com).  so, your browser must also accept cookies to enable these downloads.

  • Why can't a button have 'actions applied to it' in Flash CS3?

Why can't a button have 'actions applied to it' in Flash CS3?
I'm used to working with buttons in Flash MX and Flash 8 but
after creating a button in Flash CS3, I'm getting text that reads
'Current Selection Cannot Have Actions Applied To It' and so the
    actions menus are greyed out.
    What's the problem?

There is nothing stopping you from producing files in the old
ways. Go to the publish settings and select to publish as AS2. You
can then use the techniques you are familiar with.
However as dzedward points out, Actionscript has come a long
way. The technique of putting the code directly on instances really
went out with Flash MX in 2001 and for a long time now that wasn't
the best way to do it. See this article by the very excellent David
    Stiller about it:
    http://www.quip.net/blog/2006/flash/museum-pieces-on-and-onclipevent
So even if you aren't ready to take the plunge into AS3, I
would recommend learning this style for all your AS2/1
    needs.

I'm not that knowledgeable about Flash Pro, however, I'd be quite surprised if you could make this work.  CS4 added Flash Player 10 support.  That includes a compiler update for Vector - a new AS3 feature.  Minimally you'll have to get Flash CS3 to generate FP10 level content and compile with the playerglobals.swc from FP10.  If you can get that far than adding textLayout.swc to your project should be straightforward.
Maybe someone else has an idea.
    Hope that helps,
    Richard
