Flash Site Navigation Headache!!!!!

I am building my first Flash web site. I have the home page
built to my satisfaction. It's complete with an animated icon,
movie and drop down menus. I got the menus to work using an "On
Press" get URL script but that was before my client wanted to see
the drop down menus throughout the site. Since the drop downs
overlay a portion of the body where image and text content will be,
I decided to do the whole thing in Flash.
My first instinct was to use frame labels on every 10th frame
and place movie clips for the various sections on the coresponding
frames. But when I try to use either of the following script
options, it doesn't work.
1. placing an "On Press/Release" goto Frame# or Label (I even
selected Scene1 from the drop down menu)
2. using a "goto and stop at frame or label" behavior
The drop down menus are individual Movie Clips, so the
buttons are nested inside of them. It seems like the problem may
lie here.
PLEASE HELP!!!! I can try to send you the flash file to look
at if it would help.
Thanks in advance.

Seems like you have a target issue, check out this topic:
How to link from a movie clip to main timeline?

• Help finishing up my first flash site - using navigation to display different sections of the site?

Thanks for looking! i am making my first flash site, and im
not sure what to do next in regards to navigating through the site.
I have different sections, home, info, hardware, equipment, etc,
but im not sure how to make each section appear when you click the
corresponding navigation link. i have an idea but im not sure how
to execute it.
Should i make a movie clip for each section (home, info,
hardware, contact), then place each movie clip in its own frame on
the main time line, and on each navigation link button (each one is
a movie clip) use action script and put a gotoAndPlay() code with
the frame number of the corresponding section? so when you click
it, it goes to that frame which has the movie clip that has the
content for that part of site, say contact, or info?? if so how can
i do this?
that sounds really confusing and im sorry but please help out
a beginner! Thank you and happy halloween!

here is a link so you can see the.swf

and also here is a link for the .fla
http://public.me.com/mattsh*t
your going to have to copy and paste that in your browser
since the world filter on here. just repleace the " * " with an " i
"

Targeting specific timelines in a flash movie can be daunting
in the beginning. But if you start from the main timeline (_root)
and build brom there, it becomes easier to understand.
For eg:
If you have 2 movieclips on your main timeline (_root).
Navigation and Pages.
Inside Navigation you have the buttons, and each button is a
separate movieclip.
Inside Pages you have each page, each a separate movieclip.
to target a specific page number, from a button, there are 2
ways you can go about it. The method that Ned suggested is called
RELATIVE.
-meaning that you target FROM WHERE YOU ARE.
the second method is ABSOLUTE.
-meaning you target FROM MAIN TIMELINE.
Relative is good, but can be confusing when using dot syntax.
Absolute is straight forward and easy to understand, and can
be used from anywhere in the whole movie. The downside, is that it
generally requires a bit more typing.
In the example I stated above, it does not require more
typing. simply say:
_root.page.gotoAndStop(number);
This line can be used from anywhere in your movie, at any
timeline depth, and will work with no worries.
You can also have ALL navigation code on the main timeline on
the first frame. Simply designate the path to the specific button
like so:
navigation.home_btn.onPress = function(){
doSomething;
this tells Flash that the button named "home_btn" located
inside the movieclip called "navigation" will have to doSomething
when Pressed.
I hope this helps you understand targeting a bit more.
Good Luck.

• Firefox consistently crashes when loading Flash sites

For a couple of reasons I decided to go ahead and install OSS a few days ago.  On the first day, the install went smoothly and everything was working just as it should (I used the oss-linux-free PKGBUILD in AUR).  Yesterday and today, however, I've started to get a reoccurring problem that is, to put it lightly, driving me nuts.
Firefox (or Epiphany, though I prefer the former) consistently crashes when opening up any site that uses Flash or Java.  With the way the internet is going, this is a large chunk of websites—not being able to visit YouTube or the website for Enemy Territory: Quake wars, for instance, is driving me nuts.
Now, when I say "consistently" I don't mean each and every time.  I've been able to get these sites to load a number of times, but in the last two days Firefox has crashed in probably 2/3-3/4 of the time when loading any site that has a Flash element.  I've made sure that I have not wrongly assumed this has to do with my newly installed OSS by uninstalling, reinstalling the kernel and all ALSA packages, rebooting, and then surfing the web for a while to see if anything went wrong.  It didn't.
So my question is this: why is Firefox crashing so often in the two days since I've installed OSS?  What can be done to rectify this?
After some experimenting, it seems the problem is worst under the following conditions:
- Having several tabs open, though not necessarily several tabs with Flash
- Listening to music and THEN navigating to YouTube or something.
However, it's not specific to these circumstances.  In fact, just before I decided to make this post I opened Firefox, went to a site with Flash on it (one tab), and it immediately shut down.  I tried this three or four additional times and was met with the exact same results.
Other info
Firefox: Pre-compiled Mozilla i686 build, v. 2.0.0.11
OSS: OSS (GPL version) 4.0, build 1012
Operating System: Arch Linux 2.6.23-ARCH
I've also posted this here.

I have the same problem. I've never been able to identify when it started. Once firefox crashes, mpd, if it was playing, becomes unresponsive. The only way to get a flash site working again is to reboot my computer.
I uninstalled flash: I'm not going to put up with that kind of behaviour. Now I watch youtube videos on other people's computers --you know how they say "You've GOT to see this movie!". And if I really need to see that one specific video, there's youtube-dl.
Unfortunately gnash doesn't work on youtube for me.

• What is the best way to create a Flash site

Hello Everyone,
I am realtively new to flash. I created the splash page of
our site in flash but 1st off it takes to long to load as it is.
But I would like to create the entire site in Flash. What is the
best way to create a Flash site, and are there tutorials out there
or any really good books, resources, or online classes to learn
Flash well. I understand the basic of flash and have created
banners, and other flash materials.
Can anyone help?

For me, as a noob, It's all about creative problem solving.
For lots of stuff, there's no right or wrong solution, but you have
to figure things out on your own. I, too, have built sites from the
ground up, and then rebuilt them even better. It's the only way to
really learn it well. Books, online forums, help docs all sort of
help, but it all comes down to how innovative you can be with
integrating them all into a site that is completely yours.
This might save you loads of headaches: avoid using scenes,
unless you are doing only animation. Keep each of your 'pages' on
their own keyframe, and use 'gotoAndStop' to navigate through them.
This is perhaps the easiest way to create a website quickly.

• Flash site done - i got a problem

I have my flash site done... but now when i click on the contact page it will go the home page? I have looking, and looking but I can't find the problem. Any clue where I should look first?
If you want to have a look, here is my link: http://www.idmiami.com/maria/ForSmiles.html
Thank you.

It would appear as though you either do not have a stop() for your contact us section, or there is some code causing it not ignore a stop().  You'll need to explain how the design is done and what controls you have implemented for navigation.

• Flash site issue

I have a problem with a flash site I inherited. When I click
the back button in Internet Explorer it takes me all the the way
back to the Flash intro and not the last page I was in. This
appears to be a site issue problem it is not IE related. Any help
appreciated.

Hi
The Browser cannot differeniate between so called 'Pages'
within a Flash site. To the browser your site is one page, when you
navigate thru your flash site it does not report 'Page'
changes to the Browser. However if your navigation changed html
'Pages' then it would work forwards and backwards.
To overcome this problem you have to put in your own 'Back' /
'Next' navigation within the flash site, recording any significant
page/content change and then allowing the user to decide their
direction using your controls.
Hope it helps

• Link INTO Flash Site?

My photographer wife just posted her brand new Flash site.
And it's great.
But, we just noticed that other specialist sites linked to
the relevant page of her old site. Is there a way to create links
into Flash sites without creating separate HTML pages? The idea
would be to go to a specific navigation point.
Thanks,
Gary

You can use a javascript code within the .html file pointing
to your exact section on the flash movie. I just forget what's the
term of that. I'll look at it and get back to you

• Web Crawlers and Flash Sites

So I realize this is probably an age old question, but...
I'm designing a new version of my web site (
http://www.steveweeksmusic.com/Intro.html).
The Home page will be one big flash object. Other than the basic
tags, there is not much HTML on this page. All the links are
embedded in the Flash movie.
The subsequent pages in my site are pretty much HTML with a
small flash object that is the navigation menu. If a webcrawler
makes it's way to any of these pages, I'm sure it'll crawl all over
my site and index everything for search engines.
My home page will get discovered by search engines as it is
referenced from plenty of other sites, but my concern is that the
web crawlers won't ever go past my Home page since there are no
HTML links on it, just a Flash object.
I do have a non-flash version of my homepage, but I'd prefer
to have the Flash version be the one that web crawlers know about.
It detects if the browser has the correct version of Flash and
allows the person to download Flash or goto the non-flash. if they
don't.
So, if anyone has advice on strategies to get a web crawler
to crawl"through" my flash home page and into the next tieer of
pages, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks
Steve

• First Flash Site

Calling Flash Gurus-
I am building my FIRST flash site. I have been doing effects,
headers, and basic flash elements for websites now for almost 2
years. I have MX 2004, but have just bought (today) Studio 8. I am
scared to death, but sometime I have to jump head first into flash
site design. I am excited. However, I am also scared out of my
mind. I have a few questions:
#1-Is a site set to the size of 780 W by 480 H a good size? I
see so many TINY flash sites, and that is not something I want. How
can I optimize it for the fastest load time at that size? Any
tutorials or books that can help me there?
#2-Navigation-I wanted to build a nav that slide out from the
side of the site like on the Gucci site, I know it is javascript,
but I have seen this done with Flash before (
http://www.gucci.com/us/index2.html),
and instead of rollovers, there is a tsunami effect that I like
that could be found here:
http://www.actionscripts.org/tutorials/advanced/Building_a_tsunami/index.shtml.
HOW would I create buttons? Invisible buttons? How can I get them
to move out with the menu?
#3-Am I biting of more than I can chew?
#4-Where can I get the advice I need that explains the basic
actionscript and standards of flash site design? I just need
something to help me along. I am determined and will work day and
night to make this happen. I have a VERY basic understanding
already, I bought a flash template and looked at all the code to
see how everything worked. I need something a little beyond basic
that give comprehensive explanations about the actionscripting
behind all the effects. I am not a copy and paste guy, I need to
understand what is going on.
That is it for now, I am sure here in the next few weeks, you
will all be so sick of seeing my posts here that you may even avoid
the forums until I finish my site. Lol. Seriously though, thanks in
advance for all the help. I need every bit I can get.

First when you finish with the site, go to publish
settings> HTML tab> Dimensions> Percent (width and Height
must be 100)
Then go down to scale> No scale (from drop down menu).
Select publish. Now when you go to publish preview select
view>source. In the code insert the following in the head tab.
<style type="text/css">
<!--
body {
height: 100%;
width: 100%;
margin: 0;
-->
</style>
Save and refresh the page. This makes the window fill without
you having to resize your fla file. I usually make mine 800/600. On
the other stuff, I'm gonna have to get back with you,

• Help implementing Web Gallery into Flash Site.

Ive created a flash site through a tutorial, but I prefer adobe's web gallery design. I created one through adobe bridge but when I navigate to the photo section where I added it, it takes over the screen and prevents me from navigating away from it. I was curious if it were possible to restrict its size, im also all ears for any other suggestions.

I am not familiar with what PS CS2 creates, but you should
check whatever publish settings there are for that feature to make
sure that any file protection features are not enabled. That may be
the source of the problem.

• PUBLISHING FLASH SITE

Hi,
I was hoping you could help me…
I am an absolute beginner to Flash 8 and web design in
general. I need a kind of "idiots guide" on how to publish my Flash
site. At the moment I have about 30 SWF files, one of which being
the home page and all of which link together with navigation
buttons to make up my site.
So, from this point I need to know how to reach the stage
where someone goes online, types in my website address (which will
hopefully be something like www.thebrightsidedesign.com) and can
view and use my site.
If you can send me help I'd be so thankful but please bear in
mind that I have no clue on how to do this! I need a step by step
guide on everything!
Thankyou,
Liam

please don't cross-post - your same post in the flash general
forum has been responded to 3 times at
least. Please - one thread is enough and avoides redundancy
and confusion and prevents anyone's time
from being wasted if the same answer is given more than once.

• Screen "flash" when navigating

This is a wierd one. I published my first site today (DWCS4). Everything went fine, all the links work, pages look like they should.
The problem: Only in IE, when I navigate between pages, before the page appears, I get a quick bright flash (almost like a camera flash) and then the page loads. The flash only lasts about 1ms -- very quick. This does not happen with Firefox, Safari or Opera.
It's really annoying, so if anyone has a fix, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Tom

Appreciate any comments on the code and how I might fix.

I have a flash site that measures 700 (Width) x 770 (Height).

Welcome to the world of designing for the web
cross-platform/browser.
Every setup is different - from display resolutions to
browser to installed browser add-ons and
plugins. You really have to decide who your target audience
is and develop your site for that
audience. There will always be somebody who has to scroll
unless you develop for the lowest display
res possible and consider a browser with as many toolbars
installed and open as possible.
