Flash vs. Animated GIF for web page

I recently bought a flash template which looked really cool.
However after realizing I was in over my head and reading numerous
posts on Flash sites I am thinking that I should scrap the Flash
altogether. It is an awesome utility but for what I need I am
thinking an animated gif would do better. One concern is that I
don't want a prompt asking people that go to my website to download
an ActiveX control. I know that annoys me so I want to circumvent
it.
What is the general consensus on when to use Flash and when
to use an animated GIF?
Is an animated GIF the best alternative or is there something
else that makes more sense?
On my homepage I would like a GIF to loop continuously in the
background and perhaps have another animated GIF on top of it that
runs once then stops. Is this easily do-able? Is there a way to get
the anim GIF to download fully before it runs and perhaps show a
still of the GIF as a placeholder until the anim GIF is ready?
Any responses would be greatly appreciated.

it is more appropriate here

Just some thoughts on the subject...
Some people disable Flash, in their browser. Also, some
people use browsers that are not up-to-date and their Flash, in
particular, may be out of date. OTOH, others, like me, set animated
GIFs to animate only twice or maybe even, not at all.
Considering all that, I typically use animated GIFs, unless
there is an abiding reason to use Flash. The reason is that in the
history of Flash, there have been several version changes, while
there has only been one version of animated GIFs. In other words,
with animated GIFs, I don't have to worry if my visitor's browser
is up-to-date or not.
Since most of my clients are heavily dependent upon their web
site for income, my rule of thumb is, to try not to use any
technology that would limit the number of visitors who can view the
site, without any problems. After all, would you want to tell even
10% of your potential customers to
"Go away until your browser is up to date"? Think about
it...
That means avoiding, whenever reasonable, Flash, Java and
other plugins. For example, I used to use JavaScript for drop-down
menus. But now, I do the entire thing with CSS.
If your site is offering a product that everyone already
knows about and
already wants, then you can expect your visitors to take
that extra step (such as turning on JavaScript or downloading the
latest version of Flash) in order to use those features. In other
words, Microsoft and Fox News can expect you to have an up-to-date
browser, with all of the features enabled.
But, if you are trying to sell people on a new product that
they know nothing about, you can't afford to drive away even 1% of
your visitors. After all, that 1% might contain the purchasing
manager for a large corporation that might have bought thousands of
units of your product, had he been able to view your site.
On another related subject, there is one important note about
continuous animated GIFs. It's a good idea to make the first and
last frame the same, with the last frame set to just 1/100 of a
second. Those frames should also be the most image in the
animation. That way, if the visitor has animations disabled, he
sees the first frame and that's all. On the other hand, if the
visitor is like me and has animations set to one or two cycles,
then when the animation stops, it is on the last frame - not the
first. If your last frame is the same as the first, then the
animation stops on your most important frame.
That 1/100 of a second won't make any difference in your
animation, but adding that extra frame at the end of the animation
insures that regardless of what limits the visitor may have placed
on animations, they will always see your most important frame.
As for preloading the GIFs, you can do it with JavaScript.
Just remember that, in that case, you are depending upon the
visitor having JavaScript enabled.
One other option that may help with some browsers is to place
the animated GIF inside a <DIV> of the exact same size as the
image and then set the background of the <DIV> to a static
version of the foreground GIF.
I hope that this helps.

  • Flash to animated gif

    Hi all,
I have a flash movie that I needed to convert to animated gif
for display in an email. My flash movie has 4 main movieclips, and
housed inside these clips are the animations. I inserted a stop()
function on each of these clips and once the first clip runs
finish, I used _parent.play() to activate the next clip and so on.
However, when I tried to convert to an animated gif, it seems that
only 4 frames are exported at the first level. Is there any
    solution to this?
    Thanks!

You could export it as a Quicktime movie and then convert it
    to an animated gif.

  • Help creating an animated gif for a navbar!!

Hey guys, I am very new to fireworks and dreamweave and am having a problem that is making my head spin! I have to create a simple animated .gif for a navigation bar (which will be made in dreamweaver). The navigation bar should function similar to this: http://www.eden.rutgers.edu/~baronson/ITI320/Exercise2/functionality.html. Essentially, all that is happening is I create this animated image and in dreamweaver, when I create the AP NavBar, I set the mouseover to that image. My problem is that in comparison to this website's mouseover image  ( http://www.eden.rutgers.edu/~baronson/ITI320/Exercise2/images/navi/audience_OVER.gif ) my animated gif has multiple layers and states, where as his only has one layer. I can't seem to figure out how to include both the text, and the gif image, and incorporate them under the same layer.
A follow up question after having found how to incorporate both into the same state, would I have to lasso out each piece of my animated gif for the individual state I want to have it applied to?
Any help/pointer to where the information can be found would be greatly appreciated. I've read through the manuals and watched many of Babbage's videos but haven't been able to figure this out. Thanks!

Your gif doesn't need to have multiple layers, but it does need to have multiple states. To save yourself a lot of confusion, create the animated gifs first, and then export them. Create your navbar in the usual way, with simple rolloveres or swap images. Export the navbar.Rename the animated gifs with the names of the over state of the navbar images, and then delete (or mone to another folder) the over state images of the navbar. Move the renamed gif animations into the image folder of the navbar. Preview in browser. The animated gifs should have replaced the original over state of the buttons.

how do i fix my printer when it won't show the print preview for web pages?  it worked for a while and now it doesn't.  printer is an hp officejet 7310 all-in-one.

I would suspect this is a hardware issue.  The rollers are probably having issues picking up the relatively smooth thick media.  You might have better results be cleaning the paper pickup rollers with a damp paper towel.  Also make sure the paper is snugly loaded and the paper guides have been correctly positioned.

  • Using Java for Web Pages

Is there any way to completely avoid HTML for Web pages? can Java be used entirely for sites?

(X)HTML cannot be completely avoided, this is the only one markup language which the web browser can interpret to display websites. If you want to avoid writing plain vanilla HTML and scriptlets and want more interaction with Java, consider a MVC framework like JSF or Struts.

  • Fireworks or Indesign for web page layout?

Hi, I've currently ordered CS3 Web Premium and it won't ship
until tomarrow, and I don't know whether I should cancel it and get
    the Design Premium instead.
It all depends on whether Fireworks is a must have for web
page design. Does it offer anything invaluable that I need that
Photoshop Cs3 won't already fill? I saw the tour for InDesign and
was impressed how you can create amazing page layouts and how you
    can export them to XHTML.
I probably won't be using Adobe Contribute as I prefer making
my own WYSIWYG editor in asp.net for my webpages, because I don't
want to buy a new license of Contribute for every web page I make
for a different client, so the choice of whether I should leave Web
Premium and get Design Premium rest on whether Fireworks is more
useful for webpage design and whether creating web page layouts
with InDesign is worth paying the extra money for (I don't mind
using it to create computer software manuals as well).
I appreciate any input on this matter. :)

    Excellent clarifications, DWD.

  • Since installing firefox, none of my dscktop icons for web page short cuts work. Why?

None of my desktop icon short cuts for web pages work since I installed firefox.
    Why?
Can you help me with this?

You can check for issues with the Windows icon cache and try to rebuild the icon cache.
    # Open the Task Manager (Shift+Ctrl+ESC)
    # In the Process tab, right-click on the Explorer.exe process and select End Process.
    # Open the file picker via "File > New Task (Run)" and click the Browse button.
    # Type or Paste %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local (%LocalAppData%) in the File name field (AppData is a hidden folder).
    # Select the IconCache.db file and use "Delete" in the right-click context menu to delete the file.
    # After the IconCache.db file has been deleted, start a new explorer.exe process via "File > New Task" to get the desktop and Taskbar back.
The IconCache.db file is a hidden file, so make sure that you can see hidden files.

Try stopping Safari followed by resetting your phone: double-tap the home button, locate Safari at the bottom (swiping if necessary), tap and hold until it wiggles, tap the minus sign.  Now reset: hold the on/off and home buttons until you see the Apple logo (ignore the off slider that appers first), then release.  If it still is missing you may need to restore your phone, which will put a fresh copy of the iOS on your phone (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414).

  • Question re Flash to Animated GIF

    Hi,
I developed a simple animation for my home page. It simulates
a title being "typed" out one letter at a time the way it would
look if keyed in a program like MS Word. Once the words are
"typed," the .swf version of the animation stops, and the title
    remains on the screen.
After creating the .fla file, it occurred to me that it might
make sense to export the file as an animated .gif so that folks
without the Flash plugin could see it.
However, as far as I can tell, I have only two options for
creating the animated .gif version: either have the animation
repeat, or have it disappear after it finishes.
Is there a way to convert to an animated .gif so that the
animation occurs once and then the title's words remain on the
    screen instead of disappearing?
    Thanks!
    Bill

OK, the answer is to put "1" in the "Repeat" field in the GIF
publish settings. To me, that means it will repeat one time,
meaning it plays twice. I had put 0 in that field and that makes it
    loop continuously.
    That's the answer!
