Flex Mobile: Prevent orientation on specific views

If a mobile application has 4-5 views, is there a way to enable/disable orientation (portrait/landscape) for some of the views?

Add an event listener on the activate (or creationComplete) event of your view and the deactivate event of the view.
In those events listeners, add these lines :
protected function view_activateHandler(event:Event):void
stage.autoOrients = false;
protected function view_deactivateHandler(event:Event):void
stage.autoOrients = true;
You can then manually check or set the orientation if you want by using stage.orientation == StageOrientation.ROTTED_LEFT and stage.setOrientation(StageOrientation.DEFAULT) for example.

  • Is there a way to save data to just one view in Flex Mobile applications?

    I am having trouble handling data between views in a Flex Mobile application that I am writing. I know how to pass data from one view to another, but I was wondering if there is a way to save that data to a view, then get more data from another view (in this case it would be the same view that the original data came from) and put that data on the same view without overwriting the original data. I would be glad to post some code if anyone needs to see it.

    I think we realise that this is the same question as the other thread.

    How do i disable orientations for a specific view in my tab bar project without disabling for the other views?
    Any suggestions?

    Note that you can also hide the tab bar completely with code in the userChrome.css file.
    Add code to the <b>userChrome.css</b> file below the default @namespace line.

  • Flex mobile orientation: force portrait mode and then allow auto orientation

    I'm creating a flex mobile project and I want to force the app to portrait orientation when I click a button, and when I click other button allow again to change the orientation.
    This is my code when I click the first button, where I want to force portrait mode:
    protected function click(event:MouseEvent):void{      if(stage.orientation != StageOrientation.DEFAULT){           stage.addEventListener(StageOrientationEvent.ORIENTATION_CHANGE, orientationChanged);           stage.setOrientation(StageOrientation.DEFAULT);      }else{           doSomething();      }  }
    private function orientationChanged(event:StageOrientationEvent):void{      doSomething();      stage.removeEventListener(StageOrientationEvent.ORIENTATION_CHANGE, orientationChanged); }
    private function doSomething():void{      stage.autoOrients = false; }
    It works ok and it changes the orientation if it's needed.
    Now, when I want to allow orientation change again, I've only putted:
    stage.autoOrients = true;
    It works ok if when I click the first button the app is in portrait and it doesn't have to change anything. But if it's on landscape and it have to change to portrait, when I allow orientation change again, it doesn't work ok.
    Do you know if I have to allow or change something? Or, is there any better way to do this?
    Thanks in advance

    Thanks for your answer. It works, but I have the same problem that I have setting the orientation. If I'm on landscape, it changes to Portrait ok, but when I want to allow auto orientation again, it doesn't work well.
    A little tricky I've found is:
    When I want to force to portrait:
    private var oldOrientation:String = null;
    protected function click(event:MouseEvent):void{
       if(stage.orientation != StageOrientation.DEFAULT){
                oldOrientation = stage.orientation;
                stage.addEventListener(StageOrientationEvent.ORIENTATION_CHANGE, orientationChanged);
                stage.setOrientation(StageOrientation.DEFAULT);
       }else{
                doSomething();
    private function orientationChanged(event:StageOrientationEvent):void{
                // do something if you are changing to portrait mode (the first change) and other thing if you are changing to old orientation
    And when I want to allow auto orientation again:
    if(oldOrientation != null){
            stage.setOrientation(oldOrientation);
            oldOrientation = null;

  • Database and Views, Flex Mobile

    HI !
    in flex mobile, every time I do a query, I have to re-open the database for each view? thanks!

    I'm guessing you have to reconnect your class because you are instantiating it in each view
    the idea is to instantiate and connect the database class and each view use the same instance (which is already connected) so you only want to instantiate the class once
    You could do that in the main app and pass it to each view that needs it, but that can get complictaed and tedious for larger apps and not good practise
    or use a singleton which acts like a global or static class, the same instance available everywhere
    or (the best way) use a framework which instantiates the class for you and you can simply inject it to each view.
    there are plenty of guides to AS3 singletons on google
    I found this video useful. Its a bit long but might give you some ideas on the way to go

    but i can't get it running for my mobile project. The  type associations works fine in my desktop air application but it doesn't work in my mobile app. Is this  type associations stuff supposed to be working on mobile devices / android?

  • Flex Mobile - PDF not displaying error - "Adobe Reader not found"

    Hi everyone,
    Is viewing PDF documents supported in Flex Mobile projects?  At the moment, I get an error saying:
    "Adobe Reader not found"
    I am converting my Adobe Air Desktop project to a Mobile project with Flashbuilder 4.5.1. Any documentation reference on how to get PDF's to view on Flex Mobile applications would greatly be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Thankyou. The Central Question over this Lumia 625 inability to open a specific pdf (by Lonely Planet) remains:-I could uninstall this Adobe Reader app but think this is not the problem as this app does indeed open all other pdf's on my phone successfully, e.g. the Lonely Planet Invoice!
    On the other hand, this particular downloaded & installed pdf can be read on my home PC, my Macbook & my IpodTouch so I can't attribute fault to the filename.
    The basic Troubleshoot step of a "soft reset"  is NOT described in the Lumia 625 User Guide & I'm pessimistic this arbitrary step will bear fruit. I have come to the conclusion that no matter what I do, this Lumia model using the MIcrosoft OS has a system flaw that is unable to read the file (a file that other devices & another OS can read) & I will not waste time with ad hoc actions such as resets as this is not a hobby for me.
    The pdf in question (88Mb, Lumia free space is >3Gb)  is a travel guide I'd like to use on my next trip & this Lumia 625 is proving not worthy of coming with me. I am disappointed at the lack of "Customer Support" shown by the Nokia Company & I hope this is relayed as some "friendly feedback". Thank you for your own assistance, though.
    I invite correction if this assessment is mistaken.

  • ProgressBar on Flex Mobile? Howto?

    I feel like an idiot asking this, but is there really no official way to put a ProgressBar component on a Flex Mobile project, even up to version 4.5.1?  The documents seem to indicate as such, as Spark still has no ProgressBar equivalent, and mobile is Spark-only.
    Maybe there is a 3rd party progress bar out there somewhere?
    I'm currently trying to hack the Flash Pro CS5.5 fl.controls.ProgressBar into my Flash Builder project through an SWC, which is just plain dirty, since Adobe seems to have purposely made the Flex-side interfaces incompatible between Pro and Builder (eg, fl.controls instead of mx.controls).
    What gives?  It can't seriously be this involved to put a progress bar on a mobile Flex project... I feel like I'm in Bizarro-world...

    If anybody is curious, this is the procedure to hack a Flash Pro ProgressBar displaying in a Flex Mobile app (specifically an iOS project)... if anybody has a better way to get a progress bar, I'm all ears!
    Flash Pro CS5.5:
    Open Flash Pro CS5.5, create a new ActionScript 3.0 FLA (not an iOS or Android FLA)
    Open the Component window, and drop a ProgressBar onto your stage
    Note that you now have a ProgressBar and several related classes in your Library
    Save your FLA, and then configure it to publish as an SWC.  In the ActionScript 3.0 settings, remove the textLayout library altogether (mixing textLayout libraries tends to cause very strange compile and runtime errors).
    Publish that SWC
    Flash Builder 4.5.1:
    Open FB 4.5.1.  Create a new MXML inside a Flex Mobile project - I was using a Spark View.
    In your Project libraries, add the SWC we just created
    Also, in your Project libraries, add the SWC Folder: ${FLASHPRO_APPCONFIG}/ActionScript 3.0/libs
    FLASHPRO_APPCONFIG should be configured in Prefererences | General |  Workspace | Linked Resources as the Common/Confuguration/ subdirectory  of your Flash Pro CS5.5 application directory
    Appropriately add: xmlns:controls="fl.controls.*"
    Inside the fx:Declaration, add:<controls:ProgressBar id="progress_bar" barSkin="ProgressBar_barSkin" indeterminiteSkin="ProgressBar_indeterminiteSkin" trackSkin="ProgressBar_trackSkin" direction="right" height="20" width="200" ?>
    Outside the fx:Declaration, add:<s:SpriteVisualElement id="progress_bar_container" x="100" y="200" height="20" width="200" />
    Inside an event handler or some other instance code (the creationComplete handler works for testing), add the following code:progress_bar_container.addChild( progress_bar );
    The ProgressBar does not show up in the designer, but it does show up at runtime :).  This was the first code I was able to get working.
    The other promising lead was to use the FlashComponentPlaceholder object instead of SpriteVisualElement (called the "Flash Professional Component" in the Component browser in Flash Builder), but because Adobe changed the package names from mx to fl as I mentioned above, this resulted in incompatible interfaces at runtime (between the two versions of IUIComponent).  This probably could be solved by writing an adapter class, but that seemed like a bit of extra code for no gain compared to what I have above.
    Also, I haven't tried it, but I'm fairly certain you could use this  procedure to get any of the MX controls available in Flash Pro into a  Flex Mobile project... I wonder what's with this artificial restriction?

  • Flex Mobile 4.5.1: Package contents and URLLoader

    On Flash for web and desktop (Projector debugger), one can use a URLLoader to load local URLs (eg files off your hard drive).  This is very useful for some development purposes, as you just need to make sure any external files (JSON & PNG) are in the same relative path as the SWF, and you then don't need to worry about different code paths whether you're loading these external files from local storage or http.  URLLoader operates the same whether loading locally or remotely.
    Is there any way to easily get the same behavior on a Flex Mobile 4.5.1 app (specifically for an iOS target)?  Again, this is useful because in my live app, these external files will be loaded from our web server, but for testing purposes I would like to be able to run in a server-less mode and include them with the deployed debug IPA file.  My first problem is that I cannot seem to figure out how to deploy these files to the application in the first place - I tried adding my external-files folder to the Flex Build Path as an additional Source folder, but they still don't show up under the Package Contents for iOS tab.
    Any ideas?  Are there any include-extra-files-in-package options in the -app.xml?
    Or is there no way to use URLLoader for local storage on mobile, and I am stuck with using Embed?  (I guess besides Embed I could manually deploy the files to the iOS file system and use the AIR api for access, but that's still a different code path, defeating my goal - we have a decent bit of code built around the idea that URLLoader is agnostic)

    Edit: Realized my original answer wasn't correct, the files were being pulled in from another setting.
    After some experimenting, the answer is YES, and it's actually a bit unexpected: Just in fact adding the external files folder to the Flex Build path | Source Path actually pulls them all in.  It seems those directories are passed to both mxmlc and adt.  Unexpected surprise.

  • Flex Mobile Projet - ActionBar position

    Hi, I have created a Flex mobile project, with ViewNavigatorApplication layout.  I want to position the ActionBar in the bottom of the app, rather than the default top aligned. How can I do that?
    I tried by setting the this.navigator.actionBar.y = 300; in the creationComplete of the application, but as I navigate to any other view, it jumps back to top.
    Please suggest.

    If you can't find a better solution, extend the View class and add the code to this extended view. All your view will then have to extend this view.
    You would have to add something like navigator.actionBar.y = FlexGlobals.topLevelApplication.height - navigator.actionBar.height; in the creationCompleteHandler (i would use a callLater because your change will be overwrited by the view_creationCompleteHandler) and in the viewActivate Handler. The navigator will always flash at the top when you switch view... It's why I hope you'll find a better way to do it.

  • Flex Mobile App eats memory on device

    Hi,
    I have my flex mobile app that manages a lot of bitmapdata objects. Every bitmapdata is disposed after use. It's a multi-layer drawing app, and I have many SpriteVisualElements displayed on the screen. Every SpriteVisualElement contains 4 SpriteVisualElement that I use to paint different images. The problem is that on device (iPad2) the app eats a lot of RAM. It's not a memory leak problem (the memory is properly released when I return to the first view). I don't know what to do... please help me!
    ps: on Flex profiler the app seems to consume 6 times less RAM

    oooooh nooooo
    you have to pay Apple first
    and then request a certificate and provisioning file
    and then try and figure out how to convert the certificate to a .p12 file
    and cross your fingers and hope they will allow it in their store
    and you have to own a mac, although there are some convoluted ways to get a certificate using a pc you still cant get onto the store without a mac

  • Flex Mobile Best Practies

    Hi to every one!!!
    I'm try to building an app for mobile with a flex mobile project.
    The UI is gonna be something like in the picture:
    I would like to know witch is the best practies to put all the grafics element into my views.
    For example, for the bricks (that comes from an xml) i created a component, inside the component i put my fxg file in a group with a gap:
    My View:
    <s:VGroup gap="10">
            <customComponents:BrickComponent/>
            <customComponents:BrickComponent/>
            <customComponents:BrickComponent/>
        </s:VGroup>
    BrickComponent:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <s:Group xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
             xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark" xmlns:assets="assets.*">
        <fx:Declarations>
            <!-- Place non-visual elements (e.g., services, value objects) here -->
        </fx:Declarations>
        <assets:Brick/>
    </s:Group>
    The same for the tshirt.
    It is a good way like this?
    And draw and import from flash catalyst?
    Thanks a lot

    You might want to look into using .FXG files for your graphics.

  • Flex Mobile textArea styling the text?

    I've read in several documents about TLF not supported in Flex Mobile. I then read about text fields vs textArea and css Style sheets.
    I'm trying to keep this really simple 1. cause I'm learning 2. So I can build on best practices 3. I'm still learning....

    don't recommend
    that you try to style form elements to that level.
