Flickering Screen and Warranty

Hello,
I've had my macbook for about one year and half now , just long enough for my limited warranty to wear off. After about 8 month of macbook ecstasy and bashing windows , i realised my screen was beginning to flicker at numerous occasions ( restart , booting , awaking , etc. ) . So i sent my machine to a local apple store but only to learn that my warranty does not cover my screen that is blackening and flickering on random occasions , which basicaly means i can't send my macbook to repair something that is not damaged but is going to be some day. Thus being said , my macbook is now one year and half old and this problem of flickering is getting worse every month ... is there anything i can do or this is some kind of deceiving apple warranty service that makes you want to switch back to windows but eventually makes you buy an other macbook because you're addicted to this trendy machine ?

Virgile...
For clarification, you brought your machine into a local Apple Retail store or a 3rd party provider that is authorized to work on Apple products? They declined a repair on your machine as "No Trouble Found" or that identified an issue?
From what you've described... it sounds like the inverter on your display could be failing. Which can easily be repaired (if that's what it is).
I'd strongly encourage you to pursue contacting Apple directly to arrange an out-of-warranty repair on your machine, or visit a local Apple Retail Store / Genius Bar if that's convenient.
As far as the apple warranty is concerned, your machine came with a one-year warranty with the option during the first 365 days of you owning the machine to purchase AppleCare and extend it for two more years (three years total from date of CPU purchase). So if the issue was identified during the in-warranty period you might have a leg to stand on, especially if it was documented somewhere.
Again, though, that's up for Apple to decide as the machine is now out-of-warranty. Calling them, or visiting a Genius Bar would be the next best plan of action.

  • Flickering Screen and Lack of Full Screen Support, Flickering Screen and Lack of Full Screen Support

    Hi,
I ran into a few things related to using my Bootcamp MacBook Pro 15” 2011 that I purchased 2012Mar. Having issues on the Mac side, with an external monitor. I bought a ViewSonic VX2753mh LED monitor, hooked it up to my laptop, started in Mac OS and seemed to be going good, able to get 1080p, 1920x1080 res on the monitor even though the 2011 MacBook doesn’t have that resolution on the actual attached screen. BUT, the Viewsonic started to intermittently turn off and back on, in addition when I tried to play a movie (or even a slideshow) in full screen (not mirrored), so that I could surf and watch the movie or slideshow, the full screen version of either would be placed back on my laptop screen while the external monitor had a generic grey with vertical lines screensaver pop up, or vica versa. If I played the movie in a small screen it was ok. Have heard a lot of issues with “flickering”. As for the application situation, maybe that’s something I don’t know about yet since I’m new to Mac. Can I play something like slideshow or a movie in full screen on an external monitor while I surf or type on the laptop monitor? Any ideas on either issue?
    Thanks in advance !!!

Ok, so I solved my full screen problem with VLC, both slideshows of my pics running full screen on external moniter while I work on laptop, and with movies, still getting my external monitor flickering on and off, other threads stop around May, is there anything new ?

  • T520 flickering screen and shutdown

    Hi.
I had this problem a couple of times before. On some random occasion the screen starts flickering and the laptop restarts/shutdowns after a couple of seconds.
The whole thing looks something like this:
Could this be software related? I have installed the latest drivers from lenovo using system update. The laptop isn't under heavy usage (usually happens when browsing internet) or something.
Should I consider taking it to the warranty service? How long will it take to fix the problem because I need my laptop ASAP.
    ThinkPad T520 i5-2410M(2.3GHz), 4GB RAM, 500GB 7200rpm HD, 15.6in 1600x900 LCD, NVIDIA NVS 4200M 1GB

    hey GiedriusZ
hard to say if it is software related, try uninstalling the current graphic driver for your unit and let windows install its generic driver and try again.
if it still occurs get in contact with the service team to service your unit. how long will it take ? hard for me to say, give them a call and they'll be able to give you a rough ETA.

hey, i have been trying to do a player moving in a frame according to cordinations(spl) i'll recieve from the mouse by clicking. well
the plan was to repaint() the screen everytime he moves and then see it moving along the screen.
well, all i saw in the input that that the X,Y are changing correctly but the picture of the "player" is stuck and only repaints only when its in the requested location.
Moreover, there is a weird flickering which is very very annoying :(

  • 37AV50U, flickering screen and crackling audio

I have a 37-inch Toshiba tv, model number 37AV50U.  Recently, it has started flickering while on.  When it flickers, the entire screen goes black for one to five seconds, then returns to normal.  Whenever it flickers, the audio also crackles.  It does not grow either more or less frequent as the tv is on for long periods of time.  It does have periods of high frequency, when it will flicker many times each minute, and periods of low frequency, when it will flicker perhaps only once every 15 minutes or so.
I am uncertain how to diagnose this, and so any advice would be quite helpful.

Does it happen regardless of input? You should first make sure to isolate whether it's a problem with the source or a problem with the TV.
Try resetting the video and audio settings to defaults from the settings. If that still doesn't help, it might require servicing.

  • I have a new l7 macbook pro running snow leopard.  When I try to boot into windows7 32bit, I get either a blue, black, or flickering screen.  Then I have to physically shut down and try again.  At that point it will load correctly.  Any help?

I have a new l7 Macbook Pro running snow leopard.  When I tried to to install windows 7 32 bit on bootcamp, I kept getting a flicking black and blue screen when it tried to install. (Tried several times).  I finally downloaded the bootcamp windows support to a flash.  I inserted that and finally got it installed.  Now when I try to boot into windows I get either a solid black (sometimes blue) or flickering screen and windows will not start up.  If I then physically shut down the mac and restart, it will finally boot into windows where it tells me that windows was shut down unexpectently and once I click start windows normally, it will boot up.  That will generally let me boot into windows for the remaining of the day.  The next day, the same thing happens again.  I have tried reinstalling several times, and the same thing keeps happening.  It is not my windows disk because it installs flawlessly on the mid 2008 macbook pro.  Anyone know how to fix this?

I own HDM 2011. But they have products that aren't listed or hard to find too.

  • Macbook  flickering screen & freeze, then won't boot pass the apple logo

    Hi Guys,
My macbook is driving me insane now. Just recently, my macbook has occasionally flickering screen and freezes after that. Yesterday, when I was watching youtube on fullscreen, it first has flickering screen, then freezes. So I hard booted it pressing the power button. Then, when I try to restart it, it won't boot pass the apple logo no matter what.
    Here's my macbook spec
    2007 Summer Macbook Pro 15"
    Snow Leopard 10.6 OS X
I cracked my screen once, and got a replacement, don't know if that matters.
    I've tried the following:
Safe mood reboot, the progress bar goes about half, then disappears and stalls again.
Booted in verbose mode but it gives a warning message:
'com.apple.driver. internalmodemsupport declares no kernel dependencies; using com.apple.kernal.6.0'.
Booted in Single user mood, and typed fsck for disk repair. After checking said the volume Macintosh HD appears to be ok. But still won't boot pass the apple logo after restart.
Boot with installation disk pressing C at startup. Success after a few try:
Opened Disk Utility and did disk repair (no problem found).
Reinstalled Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.
This time it booted with Finder and everything for a short while, then the screen flicker and freezes again (before I can backup anything!). Then, I can't reboot pass the apple logo again.
When I try to reinstall Leopard OS X 10.5 with installation disk, the macbook seems to try to read the disk, but won't boot. I've got a CD stuck in the optical drive now.
I've tried everything I can find online short of opening it up and send it into the oven for baking! I pray it's not a hardware problem, coz I'm no good at that. (QAQ~~~) Please help me!
Thank you very, very, very much!!!
ps. this is my first post. please let me know if I have missed anything.

Reboot the machine holding the trackpad or left wired mouse button down, that shoudl force eject the 10.5 disk.
Reinstalled Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.

Ok, so your attempting data recovery efforts.
First get the 10.5 disk out of the machine, like above.
You can also boot into Single User mode, (command s at reboot) and enter
    /usr/bin/drutil eject
    then type
    restart
Next hold c boot and use the 10.6 disk and create a data recovery drive here on a blank external drive, make sure you clean and polish the bottom of the 10.6 disk, if it's bad you will need to get a new one.
Create a data recovery, undelete boot drive
If your problems continue on this drive even with a clean or new 10.6 disk, it's likely a hardware issue with your Mac, not a issue with the drive.
I suspect a failing sector on your internal boot drive, you installed OS X right over the same spot perhaps, as you were obviously able to boot from the 10.6 disk to install it so it seems the hardware of the Mac appears to be working.
You might have other issues relateing to software perhaps, something your installing or running.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
Once you have gotten your files off the internal drive, you may want to look into doing a Zero Erase with Disk Utility before resintalling 10.6 again fresh install method.
Reducing bad sectors effect on hard drives
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
Look into making a bootable clone, it's easier to restore with and more options than Timemachine

  • Solution: Flickering Screen or UI Elements in Mavericks

Lots of threads and videos about flickering screens and UI elements in apps, especially with multiple displays going around. Various solutions from clean install, clean install with time machine backup, installing AutoCAD 360 (?!? LOL), and using SwitchResX to tweak your refresh rate have been reported as various fixes, at least temporarily.
I already own SwitchResX, because it still allows me to shift between thousands/millions/billions of colors, which the Mac OS X Display Prefs used to offer once upon a time but is now missing.
Simply toggling color count fixes the flickering, at least through a reboot. Since my Mac Pro is typically going 24/7 unless I'm swapping out hardware, it is more or less a permanent fix for me.
While Apple needs to fix this bug, $10 will both save your sanity in the meantime, while supporting an awesome independent Mac developer.
Interested in feedback from others if the toggling solution works for you.
    Cheers

  • White Screen and Blank Screen

    Hi guy
I recently bought a 9720 and as new as it is,it fell when doing a back flip(long story)... So as we speak all I'm getting is a black blank flickering screen and sometimes that black screens becomes a "white screen of death"...
And I've been doing my research and because the 9720 is still new,no one has experienced what I'm experiencing maybe... So guys if anyone has a solution to this pls help out,pls pls pls,
    Thank you

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
I recommend that you attempt to boot into Safe Mode:
KB17877 How to start a BlackBerry smartphone in Safe Mode
It may take you multiple attempts to get the ESC key sequence (press/release/hold) correct, so be patient. When successfully into Safe Mode, see what happens.
If the behavior ceases, then think carefully...what happened just before this behavior started? A new app? An update? A Theme? Something else? Think carefully as the smallest change could be causal...and attempt to undo whatever that was.
But if the behavior continues in Safe Mode, then you may need to consider more drastic actions -- WIPE, OS Reload, BBSAK Wipe/Reload, and the "Bare Bones" OS Reload Process. To prepare, you should be sure that you have a full backup to your PC...please review the Backup link in my auto-sig on this post for instructions.
You may also need the use of these tricks:
KB10144 How to force the detection of the BlackBerry smartphone using Application Loader
KB27956 How to recover a BlackBerry smartphone from any state
    http://crackberry.com/blackberry-101-lecture-12-how-reload-operating-system-nuked-blackberry
Also, please try this sequence...note that, throughout the entire 4h15m process, your BB must remain directly connected to a known-good wall charger (not PC USB, not a cradle):
With the battery inside, connect your BB to the wall charger
Leave it alone for 2 hours, no matter what the LED or the display does
    Remove the battery
    Wait 15 minutes
    Insert the battery
Wait another 2 hours, no matter what the LED or the display does
This has been known to "kick start" some BBs.
It is also possible that your battery or BB has experienced a problem...to test, this sequence is needed:
Obtain an known good and already fully charged additional battery...use it in your BB and see what happens
Obtain access to a known good and identical BB...use your battery in it and see what happens
The results of this will indicate if it's your BB or your battery that has the problem. Note carefully please that "new" and "know good" are not necessarily the same things. While rare, a "new" battery certainly could be defective. Rather, the simplest (and least costly, btw) method to conduct this test is to find someone with an identical BB who has no issues...trade batteries and see what happens.
Lastly, do be aware that if the device was damaged, then no amount of OS or software level "fixes" will be of any use. Only in-hand evaluation by a qualified BB hardware technician could give you a proper evaluation and estimate if actual damage has happened.

  • Video connector keeps disconnecting (Screen flickers on and off)

    Hi,
I bought a HP Pavilion Notebook 14-v054ca two weeks ago. Last week, the screen was flickering on and off, so I took it to the shop. They said the video connector was knocked loose and asked me if I dropped the laptop. The laptop is on my desk 24/7 and I have not dropped it once (I only had it for a week)! I have a warranty, so they replaced my laptop for me. Sadly, all my data was wiped, but hey, things happen.
    I digress.
Here I am with my second brand new HP Pavilion Notebook 14. I want to make sure the screen incident doesn't happen again, so I open and close the lid as gently as I can. Guess what. One week later, the video connector disconnected yet again. Is the 14-v054ca just a line of faulty, defective laptops? I hope that is not that case, because I love HP to death. I have an HP desktop and I am extremely satisfied with it. I don't want to trade this laptop in again just to have it happen a third time. It's an utter waste of time, and I lose my data every single time they give me a new one.

    Hello, @PongV2
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you've bought two notebooks and both have had an issue with flicker screen. That this was identified from where you purchased it as a loose connector.
To get assistance on this and to see what could be done for you on the issue, I recommend contacting phone support.

  • Iphone 5c screen flickering, pixelated and then becomes unresponsive

i got a replacement iphone 5c from apple about 4 months ago. my first 5c started flickering and eventually just gave up on me. apple had it for 2 weeks and sent back what i was told was a brand new 5c. Lucky for me as i was just passed my 1 yr warranty when i got it back. the first time i turned it on the screen flickered a few times but stopped. Now, the app icons jump around the screen and the screen gets so pixelated you can barely see the screen. After this, it will become completely unresponsive and wont even power off. Ive restored it three times now and nothing works.  i feel really let down - i look after my phones and have always bought apple products. the 5c is the first apple product ive had so many issues with. To have a completely unusable phone after 4 months of getting it straight from Apple is a joke and to make things worse im out of my warranty. is there any way of fixing this or at least contacting apple to let them know whats
happened? the website just keeps redirecting me to various pages which are not helping at all.

    Hello woothie,
It sounds like your screen is behaving unexpectedly and is not displaying your content correctly. If you had been restoring from a backup, I would next test it out after having backed up and restored as new with this article:

  • The other day I dropped my iPod touch and the screen cracked and my warranty is up how do i get it fixed. Do I order an screen and have Apple repair it of do I have to

The other day I dropped my ipod touch and the screen cracked and my warranty is up how do I get it fixed. Do I buy a screen and bring it to Apple to repair od do I have to repair it. Please help me

Apple does not repair iPods, but will replace the entire iPod for a flat fee; see the Repair Pricing section here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/faq/
There are independent iPod repair services that may be able to replace the screen for less. Do a web search for "ipod repair". Some places also will sell parts and instructions for doing the repair yourself, but the connectors and parts are delicate and it's easy to cause further damage, so attempt this only if you are confident in your skills.
    Regards.
