FM 10 xref format changes when updating file

I'm authoring in structured FM 10 using a DITA 1.2 application on Windows 7, but working with FM documents rather than XML files. I was having problems updating cross-references in my existing (structured FM 7.2) files after upgrading to FM 10 -- FM was changing all xref formats to DITA Default Format, which blew away all of my defined formats. So I opened one of the standard structured templates included with FM 10 (DITA_1.2/app/technicalContent/template/topic.template.fm), thinking that I set up my structured application incorrectly.
I know I must be missing something simple, but this is what happens when I create and update a cross-reference:
Using the unmodified structured  template and the unmodified DITA 1.2 application that comes with FM 10, add an fm-xref element.
Using the DITA-Cross-Reference dialog box, create the xref (doesn't  matter if it's an internal or external xref).
Select See_Title_and_Page xref format. Xref looks fine in the source document.
Select Edit > Update Reference, and select All Cross-References.
When I click Update, FM updates the xref but changes the xref format to DITA Default Format. I can see that the See_Title_and_Page format included in the template uses the <$paratext> building block instead of <$elemtext>, but  I can't delete or modify this format and I can't create a new xref format, either, since the DITA  Cross-Reference dialog box doesn't give me those options.
However, if I create a new FM book and add this file to it, and then  select Edit > Update Book, and select All Cross-References, FM  updates the xref and maintains the xref format I chose.
So, why does updating a file remove the selected formats from all xrefs and replace them with DITA Default Format, while updating a book does what I'd expect (and what FM has always done)? And why can't I modify an xref format using the template/DITA 1.2 application that comes with FM10?
Thanks for any assistance.

Hi Saurabh,
Thanks for the reply. I guess it's reassuring to know that the automatic reformatting of xrefs by FM isn't due to something I've overlooked. As long as there's a workaround, I'll keep updating xrefs from a book. Not a great workflow, but it won't block our writing for now.
On the other issue: Thanks, I do know how to edit xref formats and import them from a template. My confusion, however, stems from two things:
I can't edit xref formats in the DITA Cross-Reference dialog box, which is all you see if you're using the DITA 1.2 template that ships with FM 10. I can edit the formats from the Cross-Reference dialog box, but I can't figure out how to access that when using Adobe's template. Adding a new xref or selected an existing one just activates the DITA dialog box, which doesn't have an Edit Format option (shouldn't it? wouldn't you want to be able to edit those formats? or do you always have to do that from one of the application files?).
The DITA Default Format won't go away. In my own docs (DITA 1.1 FM files), I can get to the Cross-Reference dialog box and edit xref formats. If I delete the DITA Default Format, save the file, close it, and then reopen it, the unwanted DITA Default Format is back. I can reapply the formats and element defintitions from the template as much as I like, but any time the file is reopened the deleted format reappears. It won't die, and I have no idea where it's coming from (definitely not the template or the EDD, which I've checked and reimported). Is this some odd default behavior of ditafm_app.dll?
Again, thanks for responding.

  • Format changing when IDCS3 file exported to PDF

I am using Acrobat 8 version 8.1.2, and InDesign version 5.0.2.
I am noticing a very specific problem when exporting some files to PDF from InDesign.
We often have a format where we have a numbered list of right-aligned number, followed by some text, a leader line, and then another number at the end of the line. This is set up with a left indent and a first line left indent (rather than using the numbered list options, we are required to do it this way where I work), and then the necessary tabs later in the lines.
I am finding since we switched to IDCS3, that when I export to PDF, lines containing this format change in the PDF. The text that appears after the number in the front of the line is pushed over on top of the leader line, leaving a huge white space. On rarer occasions, it will move things in lines that have no indents, but contain tabs that aren't being used.
I have been able to get the files to export correctly by removing the left indent and first-line left indent and using tabs instead (or by removing unused tabs). But we have hundreds of files set up in this manner so going in and changing how they are all set up is problematic to say the least. Many of these are also multi-line and not using the indents means we have to manually tab lines over.
Is this a known issue? Does anyone know why this might happen and how I can prevent it?
I tried posting in the Acrobat forums and it was suggested since it's an export issue that I might get more help from the InDesign folks.

Given that the file is being exported to PDF and not going via a driver route, there really is no reason why changing the default printer should make a difference whatsoever in this particular case. Changing default drivers in Microsoft Office applications, yes, but for this situation, no. And since Acrobat doesn't change formatting, the issue sounds like some problem associated with InDesign. Please report this problem directly to Adobe Tech Support and be prepared to send them sample files. Thanks!

  • Format Changes when Exporting to PDF

I'm using Crystal 12.0 and have an issue very similar to these threads listed below.
While viewing a report on my development machine, all is fine.  I can export to PDF and the formatting is OK.
However, when the report is exported to PDF on the web server, the spacing between some of the text is off.  The spacing is used for a CrossTab cell in a "Display String" that I changed using "Format Field."   All that's supposed to happen here is several spaces are used to move the text under the proper column.
When exporting to PDF on the web, the text moves over to the left like it's missing some of the spaces.  I wondering if the below threads apply to Crystal 12.0.
    Thread:1220516 and
Format Changes when Exporting to PDF
    Thanks kindly for your assistance,
    -Marty

I'm having a very similar problem using Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 2008. Everything is perfect when running in VS 2008, it takes the report and exports it to PDF format via VB code. The PDF file is idenitcal to the report. However, when run on the server the one page report (when exported to PDF) gets chopped into ten 4x4 chunks. So the PDF file is 10 pages....its like puzzle pieces of the original.
I've drawn a bunch of lines on the report to look like boxes - perhaps this is causing issues? The font on the report is Arial.
The server has the 10_5 runtime installed and it is set to the same default printer as the development PC. I have been stuck on this for days and would really appreciate any advice you may have.
    Thanks!

  • "Put" only 'changed' or updated files - possible ?

When putting files to the server, is it possible to put just the changed or updated files?
The only way I've found is to individually select the files I changed and then put them.
Rather, it would be great if I could select from "Put All", "Put Changed", etc.
    Many thanks

This should help explain a little about synchronizing and putting newer files to the remote server:

  • MD5 Checksum Changes When Renaming Files in Bridge?

Just like the title says: MD5 checksum seems to be changing when renaming files in Bridge
Is this normal? Is there anyway to disable this? Checksums do not seem to change when renaming a file outside of Bridge (ie; in Windows Explorer or Mac Finder).
    Ken
    P.S. System is Windows 7 using Bridge CS6 (64bit)

Thanks for the quick reply Curt.
Until you just now asked the question, I could not explain why it should not change. Now, if I understand correctly after googling around a bit, it appears the hash can be computed either with or without the filename (among other things).
Apparently Bridge computes the hash including the filename. It seems there is an option to compute the hash based only on the file contents (ie; without the filename). My assumption was that by default, the checksum was generated using only the files contents (ie; without the filename).
I'm hoping someone can comment definitively on how Adobe Bridge does it and whether or not there's a way to change it.

  • Photoshop Elements 7 - format changes to temp file when saved

When I open a file in the edit screen (quick edit) and then edit the file -- when I close it (and agree to replace the current image), it closes as a temp file and I lose the jpg file? It does state that the image "Could not save as ..... because the file is already in use or was left open." Then I close it and the jpg is gone. Is there some setting I have to change? I just want to make changes and then save as the same file so I only have the new, edited image? I know I have done this before.
I am using Vista and Photoshop elements 7. I had elements 4 before and this never happened. In fact, I used my elements 7 before and it never happened.
    Thanks for any help.

Please explain more as if your new file is not created properly or it is not recognized as a supported file format. In later case you will see some unsupported file format icon when you save the file and check its file icon.
Also when you save the file, a jpeg settings dialog box comes up. Make sure you select appropriate settings.
If you find that its just the unsupported file, then try opening the file with File->open As and choose jpeg and see if its opening.
Also try open with after right click the image icon and browse and choose PSE as a default app for opening a file.

  • Why is the label color not changing when my file is updated?

I would like the label color to change to white when a file has been updated/changed. Since upgrading to 10.7.2 the file color stays the same. Is there a setting I am missing that will allow the file to go back to white when updated?
    Thanks for any input...

As far as I know, this is not standard functionality in the Mac OS.  Granted this, some third party application, or a script of something, was making this happen for you. Somehow the system update broke it. If you can figure out what software was giving you this feature, maybe you can update it or re-install it.

I haven't tried printing to PDF. I will try that and see what happens. Unfortunetly, where I work we are required to export to PDF rather than print to PDF, so if it works it will only be a clue for me rather than a solution.
Thanks for the reply. I'll try a cross post to the InDesign forms.

  • Slow response when updating files on server

    Hey there,
I'm trying to pinpoint a problem I'm having with my Mac Pro and MacBook Pro regarding very slow page refreshes when modifying files on my server via browser. I'm using a software package called Photo Cart that is a shopping cart for my website. It uses a MySQL database and I seem to have the problem primarily when changes are made to the database. When I make a change to one of the settings on the web app admin, I am stuck waiting for the page to come back for exactly 2 minutes. The change I specify seems to update instantly, as I can see the updated settings on the client side from another computer during the wait time. Also, during the wait, I cannot access the admin area, or the store front from the offending computer. The result is the same on Safari 5.0.2 and Firefox 3.6 & 4b10.
Any idea why this might be happening? A guy on the support forum for Photo Cart said, "A very few Macintosh users have experienced similar things. The problem APPEARS to be related to local network hardware (router and/or modem)."
I'm using a Time Machine for my router and it's connected to a Motorola Surfboard cable modem. This problem did not always occur, however, I don't know when it started and there has been no change to my network equipment since the last working state.
I have no problems with any other web apps, including my WordPress site which is hosted on the same server and also uses a MySQL db.
For now, I'm stuck editing my Cart from a crappy old PC laptop running XP (using the exact same network setup as the Mac Pro.) Not fun. What Gives

It looks like I found the problem. Not sure why but it seems to be connected to fonts. After going though font book and cleaning out any duplicates the problem seems to have stopped. I hate fonts!

  • Modification Date changes when updating Open With?!?!

Forgive me if this is mentioned elsewhere. I have been searching these forums and not seen this problem.
If I do a 'Get Info' on a file in the Finder and change the application it opens with, the Modification Date changes to 'now'. Why in the world would this happen? This is not how 10.3.x worked, and certainly doesn't make any sense since I am not actually modifying the file. I am simply changing the OS's metadata about which app to use. This info isn't even stored in the file itself, as evidenced by burning such an document to a CD or moving it through a network server then opening it on a machine with different default apps for certain extensions.
Is this just another wacky step backwards in the world of the Apple OS X Finder, or am I missing a way to avoid this?
    PowerMac G5 2.5DP   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

This is not how 10.3.x worked, and certainly doesn't make any sense since I am not actually modifying the file.
Actually, I am using "Panther" now, and can confirm that changing the application to be used to open an individual file through "Get Info" does in fact change the modification date.
When the "Change all" button is used, the modification date of other files of that type won't be affected by this change since that modification is presumably made somewhere in the "Launch Services" database to set the "default" application to be used for that file type. Perhaps this is what you were thinking of.
However, for that first file (or any file changed individually), the file is in fact modified, and the "Open with" information is stored with the file, in its "resource fork". Usually, a 'usro' resource (specifying the application) and an 'icns' resource (for the app's custom icon for that file type) are added. You can try this yourself - drag any image from Safari.app to the "Desktop" and open the info window for that image - such images usually don't have a "resource fork". Make note of the file's size, then change the "Open with" application. You should immediately see an increase in the file's size (to account for the addition of the "resource fork") accompanied by an update of the file's modification date to reflect this modification.

  • Export to Excel format changed after update to new Office

    Post Author: Ceraq
    CA Forum: Exporting
I am using the XL export format as an intermediate step to some complex calculations and ties that are not supported in my legacy system.  To get what I want I simply used a CR XI report to create a mid way data file and then used a second report to crunch the final numbers from the data file.  Its a long painful story as to exactly why I have to do it this way... not my choice.
Prior to the update when I exported more than ~65k lines to an XL format they remained in one sheet.  So the second report would grab all the data and go...  Now, after the update of office, the report gets split into seperate sheets each of ~65k records long and the second report sees each sheet as a seperate data table!  I'm pushing over 1.25 million records into less than 400k in the mid data file so I'm getting about 7 sheets instead of the original 1.
I have a lot of work and time invested in this method so I would like to fix it so it still works in the previous manner... I have tried to export to a different format, but it seems that CR XI cannot export to a format that it can also read in... at least that I have found and not without creating a whole new DB for it to export into (Access).  I cannot unroll the new office either as it is already enterprise wide...
Reomendations? Suggestions? Should I simply go get a few cases of Dr. Pepper and tell my wife I wont be home this week and re write everything (no plan on how I'd do that either...)?
    Best regards,
    Michael

  • Format change when report open in report expert

    Hi all,
I am using report builder 6i and I create invoice report I have attached it with oracle ebs 11i and run it from
concurrent manager. Now I have to open my invoice report into report expert software.
when it opens into report experts, It change our report builder fonts and format both.
suppose if item are 1 then invoice total depens upon number of items. so invoice total position is changed
according to the number of items. If 1 items total move up and if more than 1 item total moves down.
In this way my invoice format become changed and total did not maintain in same position.
    Thanks

The Format is changed due to sizes of Repeating frames in the report layout as well as the fixed frames.
you can use the border color of the frames to design the report layout.
when your fixed frame is not in lined with the repeating frame objects and the anchor is not applied then the report output in PDF will not be disturbed
while in the Excel format it will be as per the no. of fixed frames/objects in the first line will come in first A1 column of the Excel file ans next in the second and so on...
