FM9 Templates
When I used FM 7/8, I used to see many strucutured templates available for purchase from third-party vendors, but I have been unable to find any for FM9. Could anyone tell me why that is or point me in the right direction of good resources?
Have you installed the update to version p230

FM9 – Folders within books – associating a template with a folder
I'm trying to test some of the new features in FrameMaker 9, and I came across the following in the FM9 User Guide:
Folders You can use folders in a book to organize files and set numbering properties on a folder. You can include
multiple subfolders within a folder and associate templates with a folder. A folder, depending on where it appears in
the book hierarchy, works like a chapter, section, or subsection with subordinate components.
I'm intrigued about the idea of associating a template with a folder and I am trying to find out what the feature is for and how to use it. I've searched the rather woeful User Guide and found no other mention of this feature, except how to set the Template Path to a URL.
Can anybody enlighten me?
Thanks,
JonJon,
There's a bit more info in these blogs:

I believe that it was designed for use with XML files, but I haven't explored this avenue either. -
Missing Conref when I save and reopen an .xml file in FM9
I am running FM9 on Windows 7. We have been using the template and rules files shipped with FM9 and modifying them for our needs. Currently I am experiencing an issue and I'm not at all sure how to resolve it.
I have two pieces of DITA content, they are both reference files created by using the DITA menu and creating a new <reference> file. I have entered my structured content into the two files and I want to include a conref from the source document B into my document A. I insert the conref into document A using the FM DITA menu and save both files as .xml. The files save without any errors. When I open document A the conref text is missing and all that is left is a blank reference element (created by the insertion of the conref). If I open the source document everything is fine. I also have an xref in document A and that seems to be working fine. My coworker is having the exact same issue. I am referencing a reference element with an unordered list.
Also, if I save file A as .fm the conref stays which leads me to believe it has something to do with how FrameMaker is reading the .xml file.
Any assistance would be appreciated,
LauraHi Laura...
If the "auto-load conrefs" option is off, your conrefs will not be rendered. This is "as designed" so that you can disable the conref updating if it's taking too long to rebuild all of the conrefs each time you open a file.. The "auto-load xrefs" option should work the same way, although this may have changed in FM9 since all xrefs are really "fm-xrefs" inside of FM. If the xrefs are rendering the same regardless of the option's setting, then that's a bug (I'd think).
So .. with the auto-load option enabled, your conrefs are working?

Table Problems (Cell Shading and Default Format from EDD and Template)
I have two problems related to tables using Structured FrameMaker (Version 10), whilst in-processing XML.
I've designed two different table formats in my Template; Format A with black shading - 30% for THead and 3% for row, and Format B with blue shading - 30% for THead and 3% for row.
If I create a structured document from scratch and insert a table, I get the required Black (30%) and Black (3%) shading. If I then insert an informaltable, I get the required Blue (30%) and Blue (3%) shading.
Although I've given the two table types different default formats in the EDD - Format A for table and Format B for informaltable - when I open the XML file (normally) from within FrameMaker I notice that all the tables default to Format A (black shading). When I then import my EDD table should stay as Format A and informaltable should change to Format I. This doesn't happen; they all stay at Format A.
I can change informaltable by manually applying Format I, this worksI. Obviously, with long documents which might have hundreds of tables we can't afford the time and manpower to do such things one at a time by hand.
Do any of the Structure gurus have a fix for this, or can someone give me a hint of what I might be doing wrong?
The second, but related question was a general one. I see that Adobe says
"Tables
FrameMaker table formats are only partially integrated with the structure model. The content of
a FrameMaker table is always fully structured, but the control over cell border ruling is limited and
there is no structure format control over cell shading."
I believe it could be useful to apply cell shading on an individual cell basis (although I'm not sure whether this is possible at the XML level - where someboddy might give an element an attribute of, say, shading (with options, such as, green, red, blue, yellow all at, say, 30%, with a default of red, for example.
I've seen that there has been mention of plugins to achieve cell shading in structure; does anyone have an experience with such things, more to the point, can anyone point me in the right direction? I don't mind paying fo a solution which I can implement myself.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
Regards
ChrisHi,
could you please provide some details on the EDD, RWR and some example XML?
My wild guess goes into the direction of the RWR not containing enough information that get written out into XML.
We're using table formatting with shaders too (using an attribute to control the specific formatting of each table) and it works like a charm in FM9 and FM11 when roundtripping.
The context rules are used in the table group (i.e. tgroup element). This might already solve the issue .

Importing element definition from an EDD into a template - does not work
FM 10.0.1 German on Windows XP SP3.
When importing the element definitions from an existing EDD into an existing template, FrameMaker converts the template into a new EDD.
So the element definitions which are correctly defined do not appear in the template.
The highest level element is than ElementCatalog in the template and not the higherst lvel element defined in the EDD.
In FM9 this was no issue.
Any help is appreciated, I have a deadline and must do some changes in the EDD.
Best Regards
ThomasLynne,
EDD is english (Version FM7.0), Interface language is German.
Maybe it´s a localization issue.
I have attached a captivate demo pdf so you can see what happens and the
defective EDD.

Thomas,
No question the behavior you describe is a bug. However, I am unable to
duplicate it. I created an EDD with two element definitions:
Element (Container): doc
Valid as the highest-level element.
General rule: (
When I imported element definitions from this EDD into a new portrait
document, FM reports that element a is referenced but not defined and that
b is defined but not referenced. However, with all elements listed, the
element catalog shows a, b, and doc. The metatemplate elements are not
available.
I wonder if this is a language-dependent problem. Is your EDD German or
English? What about your user interface?
Can you send me a short EDD that fails as you've described?
Thanks,
--Lynne

Framemaker templates - differences from previous versions?
When I try to load a template created for a previous version, Framemaker 9 issues a warning message. (These are the templates that Adobe gives away on their website.)
I am curious if I am losing something significant by using a template made for an earlier version of Framemaker. Is there a way to find out what I am missing or what issues I might run into later.
I searched the web and did not find any templates - either free or otherwise, other than what Adobe has put out. Does someone know of sites where I can get some templates?
Thanks for your time, responses.
Cheers; 'best,
shankarOlder templates might not use the newer Section/Sub-Section numbering features, but even so the numbering should work just fine.
Older templates might use slightly different color definitions, so if you eventually combine older version templates and brand new FM9-created files in a book you'll get the "color inconsistencies" warnings, which of course are easily corrected by importing the colors from a brand new document into all the files in the book.
Much older FM templates might not have the PDF Setup settings for bookmarks, tags, links, etc., and again if you combine new-FM and old-FM files you might end up with inconsistencies that will need to be adjusted by importing settings from an FM9 file.

I hope I'm posting this in the correct place!
I am learning FM9 Structured and slowly building new templates/EDD for our large existing company user documentation. The plan is to use RH to publish it to html, pdf, etc.
I'm trying to figure out how the glossary markers work in FM9 and how to set them up properly to be imported into RH. No one in the FM discussion groups seems to be able to help me. My main confusion is that I can't figure out how to mark something within FM itself. The way I'm understanding the documentation it goes like this:
I put my cursor on the term I want to mark (for example: name)
I open the Marker pod, and select Add New.
The documentation says that what I type in the Marker Text window becomes what I think of as the term name and the paragraph that the marker is in becomes the definition.
I click New Marker and voila!
However, no matter what I try, when I create a List of Markers (glossary), all I get is whatever is in the Marker Text window and the page number. There is no Term - Definition.
There's one other thing I don't understand - but maybe this will answer itself if I could get the above to work? My understanding of a glossary is one definition that can be linked to from many places throughout the documentation. For example: I define Name the first time it is used, and then I can put a "name" marker anywhere else and have a pop-up or link to the name definition. If the definition has to be in the text at every point that you insert a marker - then what would be the point?
I feel like I'm going around and around in the documentation and I apparently have some kind of mental block, because it's just not making sense. I would REALLY appreciate it if someone could explain to me either what the process is or what I'm mis-understanding about what the process actually does. I've tried to include the relevant info, but if you need anything else from me -please don't hesitate to ask!Technical Communication Suite allows you to mark Glossary terms and definitions in FrameMaker source content, import them in RoboHelp and finally publish them to various ouput formats generated through RoboHelp.
If you are using TCS 2 or TCS 3, here are the steps to achieve it.
Marking Glossary Term and Defintion in FrameMaker
======================================
1. Place the cursor at the beginning of the paragraph in FM document which is to be marked as Glossary definition
2. Open the marker Pod (Special->Marker)
3. Select the Marker Type as "Glossary"
4. Add the Glosary term as Marker Text
5. Save the FM document
Please note that generating "List of Makers" creates a list of marker text with each term linked to paragarph it points to.
Importing FM content to RoboHelp and publishing it
=====================================
1. Create a RoboHelp project
2. Link/Import the FM document to RoboHelp project
3. Mark "Convert Glossary" option in Import Wizard or Linked document properties(Edit->Properties) dialog
4. Finally update/import the content.
5. The generated glossary(term-definition pairs) can be viewed in Glossary pod by opening the glossary from Project Manager Pod
6. If you wish to link glossary terms instances with the glossary definition within the content, you may like to use Glossary Hotspot Wizard (Tools->Glossary hotspot wizard).
7. Finally, the content can be published to various formats from Single Source Layouts pod by choosing the appropriate glossary in the SSL dialog.
I hope this helpful. Please let me know in case you need any further elaboration of any step.

Upgrade path recommendations (FM8/FM9/FM10)
Our company started building an internal doc library using FM8. We have 17 books (5 are just individual documents). We then purchased TCS2 so we could develop a new Help system with RH. I installed FM9 and moved one book to the new version to play with FM/RH integration. All other books and our templates are in FM8 (p277).
Now we've upgraded to TCS3. I want to move all books to FM10. I'd like to move the FM8 books directly to FM10 and skip going through FM9. Am I correct that I can use FM10 to open and convert both the FM8 and FM9 books?
My plan is to remove FM9 before I install FM10 to save hard drive space. I'm wondering if anyone has advice regarding conversion workflow. I'm a bit rusty on FM as I mostly use RH these days. Are there things I should "clean up" in my files before converting?
Thanks in advance for any advice!
KimI'm reading about MIF now. I see I can choose MIF-Classic or MIF-Unicode formats. The docs mention that MIF-Classic is forward-compatible, but don't say the same about MIF-Unicode. Is one format better than the other? I have fairly vanilla docs with graphics imported by reference. One doc uses condition tags to produce internal/external versions of the book.
Other questions:
Should I also save the TOC and Index files as MIF and bring them into FM10, or should I just recreate them when building the book in FM10?
What about converting the templates from FM8 to FM10? Should these also go through MIF?
I know I have a lot to learn about MIF. I have the Adobe manuals, but would like to find other resources that provide actual experiences of real users. I have many "go to" websites for RoboHelp issues (Peter Grainge, RoboWizard) and would like to find some similar sites for FM.
Thanks again for all your help!

And/or if statement in rtf templates.
Hi all,
I'm using XML Publisher 4.5.
I have created a word template file (rtf) for my reports. I need to be able to show some content in the template file by using and and/or if statement.
fx. <?if:doc_type='STANDARD'?> OR <?if:doc_type='DEFAULT'?>
How can I do this?
In advance thank you.
Best regards
KennethHi D,
Thank you for your answer.
I have seriously thought about that solution; but I don't think it's a smart way to do it.
If i do it like that, i need to copy the whole table and paste it inside the if statements.
I have two xml elements that I need to make the decisions on. POH_PO_TYPE & CP_RELEASE_NUM.
POH_PO_TYPE can be: STANDARD, RELEASE or BLANKET.
CP_RELEASE_NUM can be: '' or N
If POH_PO_TYPE is RELEASE AND CP_RELEASE_NUM is not ''
OR POH_PO_TYPE is STANDARD
OR POH_PO_TYPE is BLANKET AND CP_RELEASE_NUM is ''
THEN show table (which contains the whole PO).
It shall show the content of the PO in any of these cases.

How to round numbers in RTF templates?
Hello!
I'm using BI Publisher for Word (Oracle BI Publisher Builder for Word 10.1.3.4.1) to build a template to my BI Publisher report and I want to calculate this:
avg(X)/(avg(Y)-avg(Z)/0.9)
The result should be rounded to 3 places.
I tried:
<?(sum(X) div count(X)) div ((sum(Y) div count(Y)) - (sum(Z) div count(Z)) div 0.9)?>
and I obtained the expected result.
But, when I try to round in this way:
<?xdofx:round((sum(X) div count(X)) div ((sum(Y) div count(Y))-(sum(Z) div count(Z)) div 0.9),3)?>
I obtain 0 when is expected other value.
Can someone help me?Hi ,
You can select the number format in RTF template .Double click the Form Field select
Type :Number
Number Format :#,##0.000

Relative path for images in RTF templates
Hi everybody!
When I insert an image in a RTF template, I put its path into the web dialog, in order to see correctly the picture when I open the report from the xmlp server, in this way: url:{"http://servername/analytics/res/Images/image.bmp"}
How can I make this path relative, in order to see the images even if the server name changes?
Thanks so!
FrancescoHi Tim,
I am using BIP 10.1.3.3.2. I am able to access system variable CURRENT_SERVER URL.
Steps:
<?param@begin:CURRENT_SERVER_URL?>
<xsl:value-of select="$ CURRENT_SERVER_URL"/>
CURRENT_SERVER_URL is getting printed in BI Publisher. Value displayed is http://xx4697.xxx.co.in:9704/xmlpserver.
Now we are importing xsl into RTF template. File aaa.xsl is stored at [BIP_Installation_Directory\oc4j_bi\j2ee\home\default-web-app]
We have hardcoded the path for XSL in RTF. The path is <?import: http://xx4697.xxx.co.in:9704/aaa.xsl?>
As we want to set dynamic path we changed hardcoded xsl path to <?import: {$CURRENT_SERVER_URL}/../aaa.xsl?> but it is not working. Sometimes BIP is taking local path of MyDocuments folder and sometimes Desktop path. If I put that XSL file in MyDocuments folder or Desktop, it is working fine. But ideally it should refer [BIP_Installation_Directory\oc4j_bi\j2ee\home\default-web-app] path...
Thanks,

Help with math / calculations in RTF templates
Greetings,
I know that there are math capabilities in the templates... I've seen the code samples in the Core Components guide.
What this doesn't tell you is WHERE these things would go in a template. And... that... is my question.
We are just starting to use BIP in conjunction with JDE EnterpriseOne (8.12, tool set 8.97.12). For our first attempt we're creating our template over a new report.
I have a template where I sum two different repeating values (through the normal BI Properties) and place these values in two separate cells in a table. I want to sum the two of these together for a "grand" total.
I've seen the "examples" but they really aren't very helpful. The xsfo, etc. for doing addition is fine, but WHAT are the values to add and WHERE does the code go?
If anyone has done something like this or has experience using the embedded code I would appreciate hearing from you.
Thanks in advanceI see what you are saying about the spaces... but it made no difference... still got the error.
The XML file is too large and convoluted to be pasted here.
With reqards to the following snippet:
COLA = <?sum(current-group()/COLA)?>
COLB = <?sum(current-group()/COLB)?>
Summ== <?sum(current-group()/COLA) + sum(current-group()/COLB)?>
Where does THIS code go?
Here is the error detail:

Grouping and Decimal characters in rtf templates.
Hi guys and girls,
I’m really struggling with a problem here regarding the decimal characters for the prices in my output.
I'm using XML Publisher 5.6.3.
My goal is to control the grouping and decimal character from my template.
The numbers in the XML data file can either be 10.000,00 or 10,000.00. The format is handled by the users nls_numeric_characters profile option.
The output of the template shall be based on the locale and not the data generated by Oracle Reports. For example: Reports to US customers shall show the numbers in the following format 10,000.00. Reports to our European customers shall show the numbers in this format 10.000,00.
How can I achieve this in my templates? Can it be achieved at all?
Thank you in advance.
Kenneth Kristoffersen
Edited by: Kenneth_ on May 19, 2009 1:30 AMHi,
Thank you for your reply.
The problem is that the report is generating the output based on the users profile option nls_numeric_characters.
I have tried to override the users profile option in the before report trigger without any luck. I can alter selects so the query gets the numbers in the right format but then I would have to go through all queryes and reports which seem a bit wrong? Especially for the standard Oracle reports.

Resetting Header and Footer in RTF templates
Hi,
I developed an RTF template (template 1). This template contains start:body and end body for printing the header and footer in all pages. After printing this template then i have to call another template(template 2) from this. I called the template (template 2) using call statement. But the probelm is that the header and footer of template1 is printed in the output of template2 .
I dont want to print this header and footer for template 2. Can anyone please suggest me in doing this. I placed start:body and end body in the second template with the assumption that 1st template's header and footer will be overwritten. But if i preview then am getting the error

ThanksHi,
Do you have two templates (template1 & template2) that you want to display in the same document where the pages for template1 has one set of header and footers; and template2 has another set of header and footer?
If that is the case you can simply create a new section in your rtf template so you have section1 and section2.
In the body of section1 you call template1 and template2 in the body of section2.
You can then have different header and footers for the two templates in the same document.
