FMS 3 deployment

Hi I am a newbie to FMS, just wanted to know that can you
develop the FMS application using the WINDOWS XP BASED FMS free
development server & then deploy that application on a LINUX
BASED paid production/live FMS version 4...(like in case of J2EE
apps)....thankx alot for the help...

yes =) windows and linux

Is FMS 3.5 supported on a Windows 2003 (or better yet Windows 2008) server fail-over cluster?
Thinking it would be nice to have an origin server clustered so no single point of failure can occur. Any thoughts?

  • Any known security best practices to follow for FMS deployment

    Hi all,
    We have recently deployed Flash Media Streaming server 3.5.2 and Flash Media Encoder on a Windows 2003 machine. Do you guys know of any security best practices to follow for the FMS server deployment on a Windows machine, could you please point me to that resource.

    Hi
    I will add some concepts, I am not sure how all of them work technically but there should be enough here for you to
    dig deeper, and also alot of this is relevant to your environment and how you want to deploy it.
    I have done a 28 server deployment, 4 origin and 24 edge servers.
    All the Edge servers on the TCP/IP properties we disabled file and printer sharing. Basically this is a way in for hackers and we disabled this only on the edge servers as these are the ones presented to the public.
    We also only allowed ports 1935, 80, 443 on our NICs. Protocol numbers are 6 and 17, this means that you are allowing UDP and TCP. So definitely test out your TCP/IP port filtering until you are confortable that all your connection types are working and secure.
    Use RTMPE over RTMP, as it is there to be used and I am surprised not more people use it. The problem as with any other encryption protocol, it may cause higher overhead on resources of the servers holding the connections.
    You may want to look at SWF verification. In my understanding, it works as the following. You publish a SWF file on a website. This is a source code that your player uses for authentication. If you enable your edge servers to only listen for authentication requests from that SWF file, then hopefully you are really lessening the highjacking possibilities on your streams.
    If you are doing encoding via FME then I would suggest that you download the authentication plugin that is available on the Flash Media Encoder download site.
    There are other things you can look at making it more secure like adaptor.xml, using a front end load balancer, HTML domains, SWF domains,
    Firewalls and DRM.
    I hope this helps you out.

  • How to determine when FMS is starting to get overloaded?

    We have a set of FMS's deployed on Amazon's EC2.  One of the things we want to be able to do is automatically detect when we should start up another FMS instance.  To do that, I've been looking for metrics I could measure on the local FMS box to help me identify "transition" points, e.g., when we should add capacity or remove excess capacity.
    I ran some load testing to find out where the capacity limits of a particular box, but ran into a couple of problems:
       * Traditional system metrics (cpu/memory/run queue length) did not do a great job of predicting when we'd hit a wall.  Load was really the only thing that seemed to climb much and it was only at about 4 (on a 4-core box) when things went south.
       * When we *did* hit a wall, it was a pretty sharp cliff.  We seemed to be doing fine at 70+70 streams (~300kbps streams in reflected out) and at 75+75 streams, but when I went to 80+80 streams, BAM!  Things just started unravelling.  With very little in the way of error logs to indicate what might be happening.  But all of the sudden, my counters for simultaneous streams/etc dropped down from 80ish to 20ish (I was still publishing 80 to the server).
    I tried bumping up the EC2 instance size (under the theory that we were being bandwidth-capped or stream-capped), but didn't really see much difference.
    I see two possibilities:
      * We actually are being bandwidth- or stream- capped and going up to a bigger box didn't help
      * There are a number of other metrics on the server I could look at that would have shown a gradual degradation.
    Assuming the latter, does anyone have any suggestions for what metrics I might measure on the FMS to decide if we were starting to get loaded?  For example, I've thought about comparing Stream.time to NetStream.time for streams I'm reflecting out of the server.

    Thanks everyone for bringing this up and proceeding with some discussions. I would put up my quick thoughts on this one.
    Any load testing , as mentioned would start with CPU and Memory metrics. So is for FMS.
    For a live case, CPU usage, for default FMS configuration would be little high. This is because of the aggregate messages and other queues that are maintained. One can disable these (application.xml) to considerably reduce the CPU usage.
    Memory starts increasing as more streams are being served, but it will get stabilized, in my experience, for 1200 connections, all playing a 500 kbps stream, i would expect a memory usage of somewhere around 2-3 GB. (i would confirm the numbers if needed for accuracy, later).
    One other good thing to look for is Buffer Length on the subscribers. An abnormal increase in its value shows the server is unable to fill the buffer of the client well in time.
    Another related option is to look for frequent NetStream.Buffer.Empty and Netstream.Buffer.Full codes, if they are coming up too fast, it means the buffer on the client side is emptied faster than what we want.
    Latency is by far, the best identifier. Mark the deviation of the subscribers from the 'actual' live, queues and aggregation of messages will play a part here again.
    There are core logs enabled for any system over load (more than 90%) of FMS CPU. Watch out for these logs. Till the point one wont find them, i am sure the FMS is doing good.
    Another option to take a look at is fibers. You can either enable and disable them for perf differences.
    In the end, there must be some benchmarking each one of us should do, in order to find the just_before_fail_state. We keep doing that internally, with lots of load and expecting it to crash

  • How do you deploy FMS applications on the web?

    Hi
    I am new to Flash Media Server and I can't get my head around
    this software.
    How do you deploy the applications you build on your
    development pc, onto an external server?
    Do you have to have FMS running on the external server?
    Or does FMS supply you with files that can be used on any
    server?
    This is so confusing.
    Thank you for any help in advance.
    Jay

    The key thing to understand is that the Flash client (the
    flashplayer) is what makes the connection to FMS. FMS and the .swf
    don't need to be on the same server.
    What you need to do is change your RTMP string in your
    connect command. I"m guessing you're currently using localhost or a
    LAN IP. Once you move the .swf to another server, you have to use
    the WAN IP or domain name of the FMS server.
    Once you have that taken care of, you can serve the .swf from
    anywhere.

  • Deploying FMS 3 in multipla linux boxes

    Greetings!!!
    We are planning to install a Flash Media Server 3 on two
    linux boxes for load balancing with VIP URL for those. This is a
    simple application for capturing media for not more than a minute.
    Wanted to know what are the drawbacks and advantage of
    deploying in multiple boxes.
    Thanks,

    I dont know... The guy that set up FMS couple years ago  was able to connect to the FMS without any scripts to my knowloege, Once he got it done, all I had to do is upload videos to FTP and the videos stayed on the website.
    ==============================
    This is what I have in a email:
    Your all uploaded  video should go under "/public_html/wp-content/uploads"  directory.
    Streaming server will fetch videos from this directory, for your  information this is a link created for FMS-Streaming application.
    You can  generate directory tree under "/public_html/wp-content/uploads".
    And you can generate RTMP path by following way.
    /public_html/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/lesson_01.flv
    will become
    rtmp://11.11.11.11/vod/?id=streams/uploads/2009/06/lesson_01.flv
    ==============================
    So, I guess what my question is how do get the FMS to fetch the videos I upload?  I kind figure I need to edit the "Application.xml" or the "fms.ini"... but what?

  • Who Knows the best way to deploy video Using FMS / Apache / IIS Server running on Win XP Pro?

    Right now I do not have “server”. Example: I do not have anything like windows sever 2000, 2003 etc. but I have and running IIS server on the same Windows XP Pro. On this very same machine I installed FMS server with the Apache that came with the FMS. I have read and followed the instructions time and time again in deferent ways to deploy my video on the server but no idea I used is working so my clients could view my videos. Looking forward to have site like “hulu” / "You Tube".
    Pleaseif you was successful streaming videos, I need step by step information from anyone whom was able to streaming videos to the public on the internet with Flash / Apache / IIS Server running on Windows XP Pro.

    Hello World,
    This issue has been taken care of! Thanks to all that read my message and wish they could help. It was all but a simple mistake that created the problem. For all that may think they themselves has the same problem please check your spellings at times that could be a serious issue! It was all because I missed an alphabet of “s” the word was “Thumbs” but I spelled it “Thumb” missing “s” for this simple reason the Thumbnails refuse to populate in the Tilelist. But soon this was corrected, both images populated in the tilelist. For the videos I have to make correction in ActionScript from playlist-streaming to playlist and the video was on. Now you know you too could try looking into your designs and ideas!
    Thanks.
    Jos.

  • Apache not working  with FMS 4.5 on Windows 2008

    FMS 4.5.1 Windows 2008 SP2 (64bit).
    I've searched everywhere for a possible solution to this, so my apologies if this has been asked before and my thanks for any potential help that anyone can offer to help resolve this.
    We are deploying Adobe Flash Media Server 4.5.1 on a new server but Apache does not work (does not serve html files or stream Quicktime H.264 files).
          Assorted Problems & Error messages:
    1.  The webroot/index.html page loads locally, but the HLS/HDS streams result in a 2032 error.
    2. The webroot/index.html page does not load from  external locations:
         http://63.116.232.5/index.html (does not load externally).
         http://63.116.232.6/index.html (our old server, FMS 4.0 and Windows 2003). Everything on this server works, the 2 major differences being that it is running FMS 4.x on Windows 2003.
    Some RTMP streaming works externally and internally (f4v files):
    http://www.librarymedia.net/flash/player.html?source=rtmp://63.116.232.5/vod/mp4:sample1_1 50kbps.f4v
    FMS does not stream Quicktime H.264 files even though f4v files work.
       New server (does not work): http://www.librarymedia.net/flash/player.html?source=rtmp://63.116.232.5/vod/mp4:Basketbal l.mov
                                  (f4v works): http://www.librarymedia.net/flash/player.html?source=rtmp://63.116.232.5/vod/mp4:sample1_1 50kbps.f4v
    Old server (Quicktime/H.264 file works): http://www.librarymedia.net/flash/player.html?source=rtmp://63.116.232.6/vod/mp4:Basketbal l.mov
    Apache does not serve Quicktime/H.264 files: I made sure that Apache had all of the correct mime types specified.
        Error messages and attempted solutions:
    Apache's erro_log file:
           a. httpd.exe: Could not determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName
    2. FMS master.log file
          a. FMSHttpd -k start returned 1:
    Solutions: http://wiki.apache.org/httpd/CouldNotDetermineServerName
    1a:  Edited httpd.conf file to include ServerName 63.116.232.5
    1b: The presence of this error message also indicates that Apache httpd was unable to obtain a fully-qualified hostname by doing a reverse lookup on your server's IP address.
    In order for the server to accept external connections a reverse DNS lookup needs to be created. I created a reverse DNS lookup and  edited the /etc/hosts file to include the IPaddress, Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN), shortname.
    This is the format suggested by the article:
    127.0.0.1       localhost.localdomain   localhost       foo.example.com
    Running the nbtstat -a 63.116.232.5 command on the machine results in the following:
    WIN-8AIHI2J0524<00>  UNIQUE      Registered
    THS-LIBRARY-VOD<00>  GROUP       Registered
    THS-LIBRARY-VOD<1C>  GROUP       Registered
    WIN-8AIHI2J0524<20>  UNIQUE      Registered
    THS-LIBRARY-VOD<1B>  UNIQUE      Registered
    So the FQDN = WIN-8AIHI2J0524.Ths-library-vod.local
    I edited the /etc/hosts to the following (with versions using the local host ip 127.0.0.1 and the external ip address, IPv4 is being used):
    63.116.232.5 WIN-8AIHI2J0524.Ths-library-vod.local
    # The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
    ::1 localhost ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
    fe00::0 ip6-localnet
    ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
    ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
    ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
    ff02::3 ip6-allhosts
    I've also read Adobe's port configuration articles and  changed the ports that Apache and FMS use as specified in the conf/fms.ini file, but nothing has worked so far. I restored everything to the original settings until I can find out exactly how to fix this.
    Thank you.

    Ms. Apurva ,
    I changed the files back as you suggested (the failure was occuring with the default settings) and our admin assured me yesterday that the ports that I inquired about were open. I'll ask him again.
    The telenet command for both ports 80 and 1935 result in Connect failed for me. I'll check Windows Firewall (turned off)  and McAfee to see if there is anything there blocking ports.
    Confirm that external connections are blocked: 63.116.232.5/index.html (does not open outside of localhost). No problem accessing with our old server (63.116.232.6/index.html).
    I ran this command in nmap and here are the results (11 ports closed): nmap 63.116.232.5 -Pn80

    Nmap scan report for 63.116.232.5
    Host is up (0.00092s latency). nmap -p 80 says that the host is down (for both ports).

  • FMS & Labels  in case of Crytal reports

    Hi Experts,
    The issue i have made few reports through crystal report designer and deployed the reports into SAP.
    My reports consists of some selection parameters.
    There are two reports named  A,B.
    In report A selection criteria is item code and name for which i have applied FMS but i want this FMS to work only for 'A'  report not for 'B' but it is working for even 'B' also since UID is same.
    Also another issue is -
    My label name also changes automatically if i have changed it for one report which i have assigned thorugh text promt feature which is in crystal designer.
    Thanks & Regards-
    Mona

    Hi Gordon,
    Below is the FMS -
    For Series  for Report (A)
    when applied for 'A' report it became applicable for Report 'B' also.
    Select T1.SeriesName,T0.Series from OJDT T0
    inner join NNM1 T1 on T0.Series = T1.Series
    group by T1.SeriesName,T0.Series
    For BankName :
    Select AcctName,AcctCode from OACT

  • What is load balancer in fms cluster and how to configure it and testing fms clustering

    Hey guys,
                I am new to fms and clustering the fms server in origin-edge mode.But i am confused actually what is load balancer and how to configure it .
    After configuring , how to test and confirm that fms clustering is working.Is there any one can help me, plz....................
                                                                                                   thanks in Advance........

    Flash Media Server does not come bundled with a load balancer.  In theory, one deploys FMS in an edge/origin configuration like this
    1 Origin ----> N Edges ------> Customer Traffic
    The idea here is that N edges shoulder the load for most customers with a single origin coordinating resources like VOD content or script access.  The issue that remains is "how do I spread customers over the N edges" and that's where load balancing comes in.  Most customers use a prepackaged load balancing solution - as an Adobe staffer I can't recommend any of them over the other, but you should be able to get some recommendations here along with just googling for it.  The short answer contained here though is, you're going to have to find one outside of FMS if that's needed for your setup.

  • FMS Server Balancing

    Hello again. I run a FMS 3.5 Server and I want to add additional FMS Servers and load balance the traffic. The plan is to use a script for the developer version of FMS that forwards two incoming FME streams to the different servers, so each FMS Server has all streams. Is there a script for this? In addition there is a need for a script that somehow redirects the users to the server with the lowest users/bandwidth in use. Can somebody provide me  with such a script or help me? Would appreciate it. Any other solutions would be welcome to get the same results.

    I don't know of any publicly available code that does what you're looking for. I typically write an application that continually polls the admin services of each FMS in the cluster to handle load balancing.
    That said, I think what you're planning would violate the terms of the EULA for the FMS dev edition. I recall reading that you can only use the dev edition for deployment when not used in conjunction with additional FMS servers.... you might want to check into that.

I compiled my application with jdk5 and WLS10 libraries then I am trying to run weblogic.appc on my application it complains that there is some class missing (see the below exception) .. then i try to deploy the jar without running appc on it.. i am getting another exception.. Please help if i am missing any library that is used by appc. I tried to look into all the jars shipped with WLS10 but unable to find that class..

    Sorry for delayed reply. Actually my problem related to deployment is resolved. There were duplicate entries of the same name in the ejb-jar.xml and it seems that weblogic10 parser is more strict on that. I have successfully build and deployed my application on WL10 at AIX. But i am still having problem to run appc on windows. Its throwing the following exception

  • SWF Verification works differently with FAXS vs FMS

    Here's the setup: loader.swf loads up player.swf and player.swf then connects to the server to play the stream. In FMS-based SWF Verification, it'
    s the player.swf that gets verified.  However, if we change the above scenario where the player.swf obtains the license from FAXS and the license server sends a list of valid SWF hashes, it appears that verification is done on the loader.swf. That looks like a bug. Any suggestions ?
    Eli

    In FMS-based SWF verification, player.swf would be present on the FMS server, in order to perform the SWF verification.
    In Flash Access-based SWF verification, the Flash Access license specifies the SWF hash of the authorized SWF (loader.swf in this example). In order to play the content, the client will verify that the hash of the current SWF matches the SWF hash specified in the license. There are two ways to set the SWF whitelist in the license: 1) Specify the whitelist at the time you create the policy, or 2) The license server fills in the SWF whitelist at the time it issues the license. With Flash Access, there is an additional packaging step (to apply the policy and encrypt the content), and a license server must be deployed in order for the client to obtain a license. However, aside from disabling FMS SWF verification, no other changes on the CDN should be required to deliver the encrypted content through the CDN.

  • Facing Problems in Streaming Video using FMS 3.5

    I want to stream .flv using FMS 3.5. The file is streaming on the company intranet but when it comes to internet, it is not streaming. Here is what im doing
    I,am using Flash Media Server with IIS 6.0 and Operating System windows 2003 server with SP2
    This server machine has a private IP 192.168.10.19(localhost) which is maped to a public ip 202.77.xxx.xx. This server is hosting a website www.mywebsite.com, where i want to stream this file. The exact path of the html page where this sample.swf will be contained is www.mywebsite.com/FlashStreaming/FlashStreaming.html
    Now the website is working fine but when i test the streaming of .swf file its not working. It is only showing a progress bar
    I used the following procedure to create the .swf from .flv
    I created an .swf with the name sample.swf, using FLVPlayBack component and given its source address as
    " rtmp://192.168.10.19/vod/_StreamingSample_/Sample(where Sample is an flv file) . After it i selected the option "Stream from Flash Media Server"
    I also created an instance named  "_StreamingSample_ " for vod on the server 192.168.10.19(localhost) in the Flash Media Administration Console
    Then I deployed it on the server with the local ip address 192.168.10.19. Now when i open the link www.mywebsite.com/FlashStreaming/FlashStreaming.html  from any client pc on the same company intranet as the server  it streams perfectly and i can also see it on the FMS Media Administration Console but when i type this link from any public pc using internet (i.e. outside my company intranet) it only shows a bar with play and pause buttons in it trying to connect to the server, and no video is streamed/shown . Is it due to the fact that im putting in the wrong address or there is some other reason behind this malfunctioning. I dont want to use Action Scripting so please let me know any solution which does not require action scripting.
    Note : The hosting server is within our company so we are managing it.

    Fraz,
    Remove the .flv extension from your address and give it a try:
    rtmp://202.77.xxx.xx/FlashStreaming/sample.flv
    should be:
    rtmp://202.77.xxx.xx/FlashStreaming/sample

  • FMS on Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition (64-bit)

    Hi,
    I am gotta buy Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise
    Edition (64-bit) for my deployment of FMS 2.
    As I read FMS 2 system requirement, it only support Microsoft
    Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition (not mention 32 / 64-bit).
    Does anyone got idea on this issue?
    Thx a lot!
    Alan

    At this time, FMS is only officially supported on the 32 bit
    version of Windows Server 2003.

  • How can I deploy a simple stateless ssion EJB and call it from a standalone client

    Hi,
    I'm creating s simple staless session EJB that has a method that takes a name and prints "Hello" + name. This EJB is in a package called "com.demos.mydemo.ejbs.hello"
    How can I deploy this to OC4J?
    How can I call it from a standalone client(no JSP, no servlets)?
    In Sun's J2EE is very easy to deploy and I don't have to know any XML stuff.
    can I use the .ear file created by the Sun's "deploytool" to deploy my EJB to OC4J?
    This is the code at I'm using and it works on Sun's j2sdkee1.2.1:

    Nabil -
    Your standalone client needs to obtain certain server-dependent properties. You can provide them in your code or grab them via a properties file.
    For Orion - you need essentially the following setup, filling in your own information...
    Define your standalone client class with "main" etc (this is orion specific - should work for 9i AS as well - perhaps there are some differences)
    public class SomeClass {
    try {
    Properties p = new Properties();
    p.setProperty("java.naming.factory.initial",
    "com.evermind.server.ApplicationClientInitialContextFactory");
    p.setProperty("java.naming.security.principal","server_admin_name");
    p.setProperty("java.naming.security.credentials","server_password");
    // THEN you can get your intitial context reference
    InitialContext initial = new InitialContext (p);...........
    Then go about your business.....
    A good book to get is called "Professional Java Server Programming J2EE Edition" - there happens to be a reasonable amount of Orion/OCJ4 centric information since one of the authors is Karl Avedal - one of the principals behind Orion. Go out to java.sun.com and look at some of the J2EE tutorials - unfortunately a lot of it is hidden behind the J2EE Deployer, but you will get a good sense of what goes into outside-the-container standalone clients.
