Folder actions no longer functions in 10.6

I have a folder action script that lauches Photoshop CS4 and saves an image in a series of sizes and formats. This worked well under Leopard but just does nothing under Snow Leopard.
Folder actions is enabled and the script attached.

Hi Arctic Ackbar,
I too am having the same annoying issue after upgrading to 10.6 and it still continues to plague me even after the latest update to 10.6.1.7
I don’t know if yours does the same but mine starts to download the maximum three items (if I have three or more but its the same even if downloading just two items) and it starts to download all three but then only downloads around say 100-200kB of the other two and waits for the first to finish, then moves onto one of the semi-downloaded items.
It then repeats this for all the remaining items in the queue so in essence I might as well just un-tick the simultaneous download option as it seems to slow the one download and general bandwidth of my internet down.
Lets hope it gets fixed in the next update, however I won't hold my breath

  • Folder actions no longer works after migration

The script below was working perfectly on an iMac G4. I use it as a type of print spooler for a DOS application that runs in Dosbox for OS X (also works for OS9 apps). I just send the file to the monitored folder and the script prints the contents and deletes the file from the folder.
I moved to an iMac G5 and used Setup Assistant to transfer my system (no lectures please...). Configure Folder Actions indicates that the script is enabled for the particular folder. However the Folder Action is no longer triggered when I add files to the monitored folder. I have tried repairing permissions, recompiling the script, deleting the folder and creating a new one...
Is this a quirk of migration?
on adding folder items to this_folder after receiving added_items
delay 20 -- time for job to finish?
    repeat with each_item in added_items
tell application "Printer Setup Utility" to open each_item
delay 40 -- time before file is deleted from folder
tell application "Finder" to delete each_item
    tell application "Printer Setup Utility"
    quit
    end tell
    end repeat
    end adding folder items to

    Michael,
That script seems to work here.
You could check whether the script is actually attached by using the Folder Actions Setup utility which is located here:
    ~/Applications/AppleScript
This utility gives you all the folders and their attached scripts in one window.
You might also want to check to see whether locating your script in the following location helps:
    ~/Library/Scripts/FolderActions
as that is where the utility wants them to go when you are attaching a folder action script to a folder.

  • Applescript won't function as folder action

    Hello There,
Not long ago I discovered a script created by Matt Broughton that printed a file as RAW to a lpr printer. It solved a huge problem for me. It works well as a droplet, but I can't get it to function as a folder action. Here is the script:
    on open printJobs
set trapFile to quoted form of POSIX path of (printJobs as string)
do shell script "lp -d printerqueuename -o raw " & trapFile
    end open
The goal is to be able to print multiple files. Either a droplet that can handle several items or a functioning folder script.
After fooling around with this for a few months, I've discovered that I am a worthless scripter and can't manage to accomplish the goal.
I will be blunt: I need the script written for me.
    Thanks for the help.

Folder Action scripts need to include a very specific handler since that's what the OS will call when the action is invoked.
So all you need to do is edit your script to put it in the appropriate handler.
Right now it's using the 'open' handler, so will run based on files that are dropped on the script. That's not what you need here. As a folder action you need a 'on adding folder items to' handler since that's what's called when items are added to your folder, e.g:
on adding folder items to the_folder after receiving the_files
      repeat with each_file in the_files
set trapFile to quoted form of POSIX path of (each_file as text)
do shell script "lp -d printerqueuename -o raw " & trapFile
      end repeat
    end adding folder items to
Note the addition of a repeat loop which is needed since there may be multiple files added to the folder at once.

  • Folder Actions script no longer runs on new file creation

Hope this isn't trivial.......first time posting here...hopefully in the right place.I'm not a total Mac OS X newbie...and surely no techie, either. Dabbled a wee bit with Automator and scratchin' my head on this one. Help, please!
Any idea why folder actions not running when a new file is saved? A simple add-color-label script created in Automator was workin' fine before I did a Snow Leopard-to-Leopard downgrade clean-install & account migration from external HD (TimeMachine) backup. Folder actions are enabled and script runs only if I start it with Automator Runner. Previously, it would label the file as soon as I saved it....now it needs a manual start. Is this default behavior in Leopard? Or am I missing something or doin' something wrong? Or is this a consequence of downgrade? I was sure I had the same script workin ok in my original Leopard install - though possibly un-modified at that time.
I have no clue why, but the new version I created recently (cpl wks ago?)worked the first time I added a new file but not thereafter...and in that instance it only labelled the file in Finder upon quitting Preview (file is a Grab saved as pdf).
The reason for the downgrade was compatibility problems with Photoshop CS4 on SL (OS & app all updated yet crashin' at the drop of a hat) - maybe due to lack of RAM? (only 1GB). Saw quite a few posts regarding SL running CS4 problems, so now I'm back to running 10.5.8 ..again.. and PS actually runs smooth like it did before.
Maybe these console messages are a help......or am I barkin' up the wrong tree?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Apologies if this seems long-winded.

Folder Actions are set up a bit differently in Leopard (they use an AppleScript wrapper), and several actions have been updated to use new technologies available in Snow Leopard.  Looking at some of your console logs, it looks like some actions or workflows were just copied over from Snow Leopard.  When changing versions like that, you should rebuild the workflows so that they link to the correct actions, and check added actions for any dependencies (an action won't be loaded if it requires resources that are not available).
Resaving your Folder Action workflow as a Folder Action Plug-in should do the trick.

  • HELP My Macbook is no longer functioning, it shows a folder symbol w/ a que

My Macbook is no longer functioning, it was showing a folder symbol w/ a question mark and then it just turned black. Now when I try to start it up, it just shows the light gray screen and nothing else. It won't start. I don't know what to do! Please help

That means it cannot find a valid System file on a disk.
Try booting from your install DVD, run Disk Utility and repair your HD. If it still won't work you may need to "Archive & Install" a fresh new OS X from the DVD.

  • AppleScript Folder Actions

I'm new to this group, and my question may have been answered a long time ago as I'm using OS 10.5.8. I've been teaching myself AppleScript, and have been using "AppleScript - The Missing Manual" by Adam Goldstein and "AppleScript 1-2-3" by Sal Soghoian and Bill Cheeseman. All has gone well until now. I'm working on a couple of folder actions and have hit a wall. I've successfully written "on opening..." and "on closing..." actions. However, I have been 100% UNsuccessful at writing "on adding folder items to..." scripts. Action scripts are saved in the proper location, are attached properly, and folder actions are enabled. I turned a primary "on adding..." script (one I started out to do) into a droplet, and it functions perfectly when files are dropped on it. Help in explaining to me "the error of my ways" would be appreciated.

If there is an error in a folder action script, it tends to fail silently - for example, your *opening folder* script will fail because you are not coercing theCount (a number) to text (display dialog doesn't like lists, which is what you are getting by concatenating a string to a number).
Since you have a droplet that works correctly, you can just add a folder action handler to that script. I use a folder action template that includes handlers so that it can be run and tested from the *Script Editor* (it can also be used as a droplet). In the following example, the doStuff handler is what does the stuff, and the other handlers (including the folder action) just pass items to it.

  • Unzip/Unstuff Folder Action

I wanted to set up a folder in which a file would automatically unzip/unstuff once it is done downloading from an FTP site, and V.K. in the Automator board showed me this applescript:
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;

    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #ADD8E6;
overflow: auto;" title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
property DELAYTIMESECONDS : 5 -- How long to wait between checking file size.
on adding folder items to thisFolder after receiving theItems
    repeat with f in theItems
    set oldSize to 0
    set newSize to -1
-- When newSize equals oldSize, it means the copy is complete because the size hasn't changed.
    repeat while newSize ≠ oldSize
    -- Get the file size.
set oldSize to size of (info for f)
    delay DELAYTIMESECONDS
-- Sample the size again after delay for comparison.
set newSize to size of (info for f)
    end repeat
-- Do your processing here on file f.
tell application "Finder" to open f
-- thats where my processing should start for each file
    end repeat
-- Or start processing here to wait for all files to be complete.
    end adding folder items to</pre>
I attached it to a folder, and it works, but only on the first file. If I let multiple files download concurrently, the script never kicks in for the second, third, etc. file. Can the applescript be modified so that it hits every file that is, eventually, saved to the folder?

The problem is that the folder action gets triggered the minute something gets added to the folder. This works when everything is added at once, but if there is much of a time delay between adding items there can be a problem, since repeatedly firing off the same folder action script on the same folder with different items doesn't seem to work very well.
Another thing to try would be to just look at the folder itself to stop changing size. After the folder has stopped changing size (presumably because the files have finished downloading), all of the files would then be processed. The items would need to be moved somewhere during the processing, so that the next time the folder action is triggered, it would just be processing the new items (if the processing just gets all of the files, a sub folder could be used).
The following folder action is similar to what you were using, it just looks at the folder size.
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;

    Hi...
Based upon the folder error, my guess is the Desktop Manager is having difficulty determining your default mail client. I am not sure why but it is easy enough to redo a profile in Outlook just to test this. (Control Panel / Mail)
Of course, I would backup my PST file prior to doing this and then create a new profile and import the PST file into the new profile. Once the profile is running and tested ok, I would again go to the Control Panel / Mail and set the default profile to point to the newly created profile. Then run the Desktop Manager and see what happens....

  • ITunes 10.5 breaks automator folder action

    Just like itunes10 did
    osx 10.6.8
    itunes 10.5
automator folder action with itunes tasks no longer works after 10.5 update.
Is it the version check again?

Unfortunately, it seems that this is a cross-platform problem between iTunes 10.5 and all NAS disks. Shared libraries on network drives worked fine under 10.4.1, but now there is just an endless loading cycle with no error message or time-out. There is a bit more about it in this thread.

  • Folder action delay until done

I run a video encoding software called Episode Engine, and what it does is while encoding a video, it kicks out a temporary file in the output folder with a file size of 0. It does not actually update the filesize until encoding is complete.
What I want to do is set a folder action to an output folder (which receives up to 5 videos at a time from encoding) that uploads the file automatically to a Transmit (FTP Client) favorite. I also want to account for the fact that I may drop large files in this folder as well, which could take time, but dont stay at 0 file size until the transfer is done. The part I'm having trouble with is delaying the transmit action until the file is done encoding. What I currently have does not work. And I dont know any way to monitor a folder action workflow, so I'm not sure where it's failing. Any recommendations?
    p.s. We're still running 10.6.8 on this computer (I know, I know...)

Folder Actions has some built in support for recognizing 'busy' files, but it's not too intelligent.  It works well with Finder moves and copies, not so well with other things.  There are three ways I can think of to solve this problem.
Tweak your script with a test for temp files so that it skips them.  This may cause secondary headaches (e.g. you skip a temp file, but Lightroom finishes the job in the ten second throttle period so the creation of the the file(s) you want to move is missed by folder actions), but there's no way to tell unless you try.
Drop Folder Actions and set up a QueueDirectories launch agent.  This would wait for items to be added to the folder then move and delete them - you write the script to idle until temp files are done processing.
Forget about immediate gratification and write a LaunchAgent that will sync the folders hourly using rsync.
    Which would you prefer?

  • Folder is no longer in this location? But Folder Still There

I have Windows 7 and PrE 9. I was working on a folder/project on an external drive and had no problem accessing the avi or other folders in the drive. Once I was satisfied I no longer needed the project (about 14 GB) I deleted the project. I got a pop up window saying the folder was no longer in this location. What the heck? I was just working on it. I checked the folder again, everything was still there and functional. I then tried to cut and paste the folder to my main drive to see if I could delet it from there.
It started out as a normal transfer of files and then gave the message that the folder being transferred was no longer in that location. Ok. I rechecked the Project folder and it was still there but....All of the folders inside were gone except a Stop Capture folder of Zero bites. It still says the folder isn't there lol. Even though it says Zero bites I would like to get rid of this folder and the stop capture folder inside. I had two other projects right next to the one still there and they deleted fine.
Is this a Windows 7 thing and have you guys had this happen? I have one other folder on my desktop from a couple years back with the same scenario. Says its not there so I can't delete it. I just labeled it "can't get rid of this folder" and gave up but it still bugs me. Now I have another one.
    Thanks

    ATR,
I should have labeled this post "Could Not Find This item" or Item Not Found
Problem solved. I downloaded 7-zip version 9.22 beta from sourceforge (for whatever reason- just seemed good) There are other places to download from. Choose your favorite.
Here is a screenshot of my problem folder so that if others run into this problem 7zip may work for them.
I had a tussle with 7zip and it did not work to begin with, but the problems turned out to be really simple. My nephew is a computer wiz and came over to use the DOS procedure that people are using on the internet to delete the folder. At first he couldn't get it to work. Then we discovered there were 3 folders, one inside the stop motion capture, the stop motion capture, and the outer project folder. The folders had to be deleted from the innermost first, one at a time, to the outer folder. Hallelujah. This folder is gone after 2 years of staring at me.
If you have this message like I did the first thing to do is go into the main folder to the innermost items and delete as many as will delete normally thru windows. Keep deleting the inner folders til you get to the first one that won't delete. Then see how many folders inside the main folder remain.
So let's try 7zip again. I am a newbie so I thought others might like how my nephew and I did it.
In the main window there will be a short list on the left starting with computer and accessable drives. Double click on computer (or whichever location your trouble folder is in). A bigger list of stuff will show up. Mine was in the desktop so I double click on that. I look at that list fo find my trouble folder. Double click on that. Each time you double click will go to the next internal folder. Then when you get to the innermost folder rename it ( we just used the word del). Up higher on the screen is the red delete X click on that. the folder will be gone. To get to the next folder use the green "up one level" arrow just to the left of the url bar. The next folder will show up, rename and press X to delete. When you have reached the outer folder which you thought was your problem folder it will dissapear from your desktop ( or wherever it was located). In my case I had to delete 3 folders. My other problem folder was in my external drive so I just went through the same procedure after double clicking on the drive letter which was in the list in the starting window. Exit 7-zip when done.
You don't have to close 7-zip to delete the folders as I listed in my previous posts. These were just info I got from a couple of websites. Not complete by any means. They presume you know what you are doing with computers.
The only reason I started this discussion was because both of these folders were made with PrE7 and PrE9. I have never had this problem with anything else. Must be some kind of filing error between PrE and windows.
Hope this helps. The DOS procedure was lengthy and was way above my head but 7-zip only took a few minutes.

  • Folder Actions will not work - tried everything

Recently Folder Actions simply stopped working on 10.6.4. They worked fine before then recently just stopped working.
I've tried everything I can think of, including:
    1. completely removing enabling & disabling & enabling folder actions through the setup app.
    2. trashing folder actions plist files in user domain and relaunching
    3. disabling related launchd processes with lingon
    4. trashing launch agents in user domain and also trying to unload them in terminal
    5. trying to kill the folder actions dispatcher process in activity monitor (just relaunches, as it should)
    6. emptying system caches including dyld shared cache using cocktail
    7. doing most of the above and restarting

I finally go Folders Action to work, after being unable to use it even for a simple beep for years now.
    Here is what I did:
    1. Changed permissions to 755 for the following folder and two contained files (note that 775 didn't work for me)
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.FolderActions.enabled.plist
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.FolderActions.folders.plist
    2. Changed the following lines within ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.FolderActions.enabled.plist (using TextWrangler)
    from:
    <key>OnDemand</key>
    <false/>
    to:
    <key>OnDemand</key>
    <true/>
Prior to the permissions changes within #1 above, the value of <true/> kept getting changed back to <false/> by something in the system... and though
there was improvement by the permissions changes, the following console message appeared until false was changed to true.
    com.apple.FolderActions.enabled[4127] launchctl: Error unloading: com.apple.FolderActions.folders
At this point true is staying true, and not being changed by unknown forces to false, and the above message is not appearing.
    3. The only other thing I did prior to #1 and #2 above, was to run the script (unsaved),
tell application "/System/Library/CoreServices/Folder Actions Dispatcher.app" to tick
This little tell line caused something to occur where my Folder Action surprised me and worked for the first time though it took about 30 seconds and was erratic,
sometimes performing, sometimes not, though if I would do move something into the folder to trigger the action that should occur, and did not occur, then at the point
running the above tell line or script would cause the action to occur.
    4. At this point I don't fool with the tell line or script from #3, and it seems that systemevents has gotten involved, as well as launchd, and with my simple Folder Action script
I'm getting the folder action within 10 seconds compared to 30 to 45 if ever seconds.
    5. This is still too early to tell if this is the wonder pill I've needed since Leopard, and now Snow Leopard (and maybe Tiger as well: I forget when I even tried Folder Actions).
There was a time when I moved things around, so that the items normally found in the former AppleScript folder, were placed elsewhere in subfolders, so I don't know if that lead to this...
because I could get Folder Actions to work on Macs in the Applestore, but not my own Mac. Watching the console messages was helpful. I don't think it's a big concern that
deprecated messages are found sometimes. That's a just a normal part of the constantly rebuilding of things that goes on. It's more like a reminder that we've got an upgraded
OEM part were going to start using, and the older part won't be available after such and such date, so program accordingly, and in the meantime drive.

  • Checking out Pdf files to Local draft Folder option no longer works after office 2013 installed.

Checking out Pdf files to Local draft Folder option no longer works after office 2013 installed.
    Summary :
We are using SharePoint 2010 Ent edition and users were able to checkout Pdf files similar to local drafts folder like any other office file without any problem when they used office 2010.
    i.e
Unfortunately ever since their machines upgraded with office 2013 recently , this functionality completely stopped working for PDF files. This has now become a big problem for the users when it comes to check out and replace PDF files.
All browser plugins required for this functionality (i.e    SharePoint OpenDocuments Class ) are all available and active. All document libraries are configured to Checkout is required for editing files. Browser version
used at the moment is IE9 (32 bit) version with windows 7.
Can anyone please help with this issue and any help to get away with this problem is much appreciated.

    Hi,
Based on your description, my understanding is that the PDF files cannot be checked out to local drafts folder after Office 2013 is installed.
Did this issue occur with Office files?
I recommend to check if the Office files can be checked out to local drafts folder with Office 2013.
And it is recommended to use Office 2010 with SharePoint 2010 for best practice.
    Thanks,
    Victoria

  • In Earthlink Webmail, the "check all" and "delete" button for deleting multiple messages no longer function (although they work in I explorer).

When using the webmail application for earthlink email, the "check all" option to select an entire page of messages at once no longer functions. Same problem with the "delete" buttons that are located at the top and bottom of the page with multiple messages. Consequently, the only way to delete a message is to open the message and delete it in that view -- extremely tedious if there are a lot of messages.
This is a recent change, in the last few days. Everything works fine in I explorer. Earthlink support suggested I start Firefox in safe mode and restore firefox default settings. I went through the process on the help page. It didn't help.
I'll provide the earthlink link, but it is my email page that is the problem.

    Same here.
    - select multiple mails with the SEARCH option (manually selecting seems to work fine)
    - click the move button
    - list of folders appears (witn account &amp; cancel options that both still work)
    - click on a folder
    - mail flies to this folder (animated)
    - list of folders remains visible
    - the cancel button does NOT work
    - the accounts button takes you back to the root "directory" of your accounts
    - in my case "live" and "exchange"
    - this screen is a dead end. Clicking on both the account names and the cancel button do not work
A complete restart fixes the problem

  • Create folder action in automator

I want to create a folder action that will move downloaded website backups into a specific folder.
I cribbed the automator folder action shown below from Macworld
The Folder Action appears not to work when left to just monitor the folder.
However, if I force the Action to run from within automator it works, albeit with an error message at the beginning saying that you can't execute the action from within Automator. Still it finds the file and moves it to the intended destination.
By way of checking this I looked at the "Set Up Folder Action" by right clicking on the downloads folder. After clicking there is a long delay but when the panel opens there is no content, see second image below. I tried clicking the + button to add the "Downloads" folder but after a long delay the "Open" dialog closes and nothing has appeared in the panel. I assume that any folder action should show up in this panel, but I've no experience in using it.
Any suggestions as to a problem with the Action or why the panel is blank and why I can't attach the Action using this setup panel?
    Thanks

    Folder Action Setup

I'm confused. You showed two Automator actions with the same name, one was a folder action one wasn't.
Are you sure the correct Automator action (the one that is a folder action) is attached to the folder?
If when the Folders Action setup window is opened and you select Articles_Folder.workflow and then edit script are you getting the right workflow?
Assuming you do I would start off very simply. Try this:
It will label green screen shot image files saved to the Desktop.
See if this works for you.
