Folder Compare Utility that Ignores folder hierarchy?

Hi-
I'm looking for a utility that compares the files in two different folders to flag differences... BUT ignores the folder hierarchy. For instance, in Folder A "instructions.doc" may by in a sub-folder called "Computer," but in Folder B it may be in a sub-folder called "Computer Stuff," so I wouldn't want it to be flagged. But if it weren't ANYWHERE in Folder B, I would want a notification.
Does anyone know if such a utility exists?
Thanks!

Thanks to some help on another forum, this is how I did it:
In Terminal, run:
cd folderA
find . > ~/foldera.txt
cd folderB
find . > ~/folderb.txt
This will create textfiles in your home directory that list all files in each folder. The files are listed with their full paths, so now open the lists in a text editor (I used TextMate) and do a find-replace to remove the path information and leave just bare filenames - I used the regex expression \..*\/ I also then sorted each file alphabetically.
Now you can compare the two file-lists in Terminal with diff:
diff ~/foldera.txt ~/folderb.txt
Or you can do the comparison with nicer visuals using the FileMerge utility that comes with the Developer Tools.
There might be easier ways to do it, but this worked for me.
HTH.

If you're on Windows, WinMerge (
    http://winmerge.org/ ) is free, so
fits with your inexpensive requirement. Haven't used it with DW8,
    but I have with CS3 and CS4.

  • E4200 Media Server ignores my folder hierarchy

I have a 1TB drive attached to my E4200 that contains several videos sorted in a folder hierarchy, like this (these are just examples):
    TV Shows
        Supernatural
            01. Episode 1.mp4
            02. Episode 2.mp4
        Burn Notice
            01. Episode 1.mp4
            02. Episode 2.mp4
        Doctor Who
            01. Episode 1.mp4
            02. Episode 2.mp4
    Movies
        Star Wars IV.mp4
        Star Trek 2.mp4
    Kids
        Sesame Street
            01. Episode 1.mp4
            02. Episode 2.mp4
        Movies
            Bolt.mp4
            Cars 2.mp4
As you can see, all of my videos are in a carefully constructed heirarchy.  This works with my old media server (Rivet for Mac).  On the E4200, however, all of these MP4 files are merged together.  My Xbox shows folders like "Albums" and "By Date", but these don't really mean anything -- all of my videos are jumbled into these folders and there's no way I can find anything.
Here's how the media server is configured:
Can someone tell me how to fix this?  If I can't find a solution, than the media server feature of this router is absolutely useless to me.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well in this case what you can do is that once delete the shared folder from the list and add them once again one by one instead of doing it togather.
To configure your router as a media server:
    Storage > Media Server
    1. Log into the browser-based utility (see “How to open the browser-based utility” on page 23)
    2. Click the Storage tab, then click the Media Server page
    3. Click Enabled to enable the media server
    4. Enter a name for your media server in the Media Server name box The name must use only alphanumeric characters (letters A to Z and numbers 0 to 9) and can be up to 15 characters long
    5. Click Specify Folder to Scan A new window opens
    6. In the Display name field, enter a unique name for the media folder The name must use only alphanumeric characters (letters A to Z and numbers 0 to 9) and can be up to 15 characters long
    7. To share the entire drive, click Share Entire Partition
    – OR -
    To share only specific folders:
    • Click Select next to each folder you want to share
    • To navigate to a previous folder, click Return to Upper Folder
    • To view and select folders within a folder, click Enter into Folder next
    to the folder name
    8. To create a folder, enter a unique folder name into the new Folder box, then click Create
    9. To save your selections and create the media folder, click Save Settings A summary of shared folders is displayed
    10. To manually scan all shared folders, click Scan All
    – OR -
To scan an individual folder, click Scan next to the folder
    11. To schedule a scan of the media folder for new media content, select
Auto-scan every, then select a time interval from the drop-down list

  • Web gallery that mirrors folder hierarchy

I would like to create a web gallery that mirrors the hierarchy of my folders (I did an import in place). Is there any way to do this?
I tried to do it by creating a set of collections that mirrored my folders (manually--is there a better way?), and that didn't work either.

I think that you are asking if there is a way to generate web galleries that have sub-galleries in a single step? You have to generate and link each gallery separately.
You can filter based on keyword and create a gallery of only the selected photos, again one gallery at a time.
If you need to be able to generate a set of galleries in the manner you described, you might want to check out JAlbum. I'm not aware that it would let you filter by keyword, however.

  • Images import without folder hierarchy

I have many images organized in a hierarchy of folders. Importing images works, but the folders and albums are not being created. I narrowed focus to one folder with two subfolders containing a total of 8 images. Every import technique (including dragging the folder to project pane) results in a new project with all 8 pictures but no albums containing the two groups.
What am I doing wrong? I thought Aperture can import a folder hierarchy, with the lowest level folders (containing images) becoming Aperture albums.
    MacBook Pro C2D 2 GB 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Problem solved.
Aperture was not creating albums corresponding to Finder folders when importing by dragging a family of folders to Library in Projects pane.
Deleted "Aperture Library.aplibrary" in Pictures folder, cleared trash and restarted. Did not solve problem.
Next time, deleted Aperture library again and also deleted relevant plists:
    ~\Library\Preferences\.com.apple.Aperture.plist
    ~\Library\Application Support\Aperture\*.plist
Restarted. Ran yasu.app (general maintenance utility). Restarted Aperture.
Dragged my test folder group to Library in Projects pane. And I get two Albums! It works!
If you have this problem (no Albums on import), first try deleting only the plists in ~\Library\Application Support\Aperture, restart Aperture and try again. That may be sufficient.
Aperture does have a bad habit I consider a bug. If you open, say, the Import window, explore pull down menu choices, and "Cancel" out of the window, it still remembers the last setting before you canceled. And some setting in that exploration can disable album creation on import. I may be wrong about that detail, but anyway, I solved my problem.

  • Support symbolic links (symlinks or Unix's 'ln -s') in the iTunes Media folder hierarchy

As of iTunes version 12.0.1.26, iTunes has partial support for symbolic links in the iTunes Media folder hierarchy. I'd like Apple to enhance iTunes to treat any symlink or folder alias within the hierarchy the same as folders. With the Unix core under OS X, there is no clear reason to not support this feature.
Why is this important? As more of us try to use iTunes as the single repository of all media, the library size becomes larger than is possible to hold on a single partition. The simplest and most convenient solution is to allow users to move large folders (e.g. Music, or Movies) to a different drive or partition, then put an alias or symlink in the original location within the iTunes hierarchy. Users with large collections or small partitions may need to split multiple times. Other users may want to put the bulk of their media on their home/work NAS and only keep a portion on their laptop for mobile access (think long overseas flights), but not have to constantly fiddle with iTunes.
The point is not whether any one of these scenarios may be supported today though a crude hack or third-party tool. Support for symlinks would be relatively easy for Apple to implement and extremely flexible for advanced users.
This is partially supported today. For example, if you do what I described above, iTunes will play all of your existing media. The part that is definitely broken is when you try to use the "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder, iTunes will not copy the file to a location under a symlink or alias. The new file will sit in the "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder and iTunes will generate multiple instances/tracks inside iTunes (e.g. movies appear in the "Unwatched" tab). While there are ways to work around this limitation, they are tedious and ultimately unnecessary if full symlink/alias support is provided.

    Pete

  • Best way to batch resize images in nested folder hierarchy?

    Hello,
I'm looking for help on [what is probably] a classic problem related to content sites.
I'm launching a content site that has numerous articles, and attached to each article is a number of images.  The raw site assets are currently set up in a folder hierarchy like this:
    Overall site assets folder
    Category One folder
    Article One folder
    Unmodified images folder
    Resized, production-ready images folder
    Article Two folder
    Unmodified images folder
    Resized, production-ready images folder
    Etc..., etc....
There are hundreds of articles in this hierarchy.
I'm looking for a script that will take every image in each "Unmodified" folder and save a resized copy to the "Resized" folder, preferably with different settings for vertical and horizontal images (though I'll be OK with just fixing the width if need be).
I realize that I can do this manually and locally within each folder with a droplet, but between droplets / actions / plug-ins or third-party tools, is there an easy way to accomplish this across a large nested hierarchy with many folders as long as the Unmodified and Resized folders are nested together?  And what about horizontal vs. vertical images?
    THANKS!!!!!!
    Scott

Ahhh, I understand what you're saying.  I'm downloading and installing this CS6 script, which might be along the lines of what I'm looking for:
Dr. Brown Services - Image Processor Pro
    http://www.e-zest.net/blog/photoshop-cs6-save-for-web-images-batch-processing-keeping-nest ed-folder-structure-intact/
Photoshop supports recording the actions and the facility to run that action for batch processing. But it also has a couple of limitations up to Photoshop cs6 as mentioned below –
Photoshop does not maintain the source, hereditary/nested folder structure for the output (destination) images. Save for web only saves all the files to the folder specified when you record the action.
In case of some file handling issues, Photoshop action throws an error & pauses/stops working, wherein we need to skip these errors manually.
I I tried to Google it to find answers and also tried couple of JavaScript solutions such as the – SFW Batch Processor, SFWCS4-5, Picture Processor etc., but unfortunately all of them didn’t work for me. Either it gave up or stopped working or even threw errors for PhotoshopCS6 and CS2.
Thanks to Russell Brown for providing new CS6 Extension script to resolve the ‘save for web’ batch processing issue like maintaining the images nesting folder structure.
Not sure if it does exactly what I need, but checking....
    Best,
    Scott

  • Corruption of User privileges on folder hierarchy (not taken into account ANYMORE)

    Hello.
We use Portal 3.0.6.3.3 (still EA release) on NT with Oracle 8iR2.
We have set a Content Area and a very classical folder hierarchy to be managed by a single user (called administrator having all privileges on all folders) and other users having just the "Manage Items" and "View Content" for all folders, starting with the root folder.
It has worked perfectly for a while but after further work on privileges that, unfortunately, we cannot trace back, we have our folders not taking into account the privileges set (under the Access Tab) anymore.
Actually all users have now all privileges on the whole folder hierarchy. It means, an "Edit Folder" not only provides the "Add Item" link option but also all other options (Folder Properties, etc) are available.
We have checked again and again the privileges on the CA, root folder, folders etc, tried and removed and re-created the users or new users etc without success.
We imagine some privilege management-related table of the Content Area/Folder are "corrupted".
How could we return to a normal situation? On which tables of Portal schema should we investigate and try to find out what is going on?
    Thanks for any help.
    null

    ... still me.
OK, forget my question. It appears that some "generic" group priviliges (AUTHENTICATED_USERS) had been changed by mistake thus overriding any other settings of the users and groups we were contemplating. So everything is under control now...
Thanks for having read anyway ;-)

  • Is my library too big or my folder hierarchy inefficient

Just reread the bagelturf article on lib size.
My library has 2500 images (masters are referenced) and it is 3.78GB. This works out at 1.5MB per image which seems to be three times the suggested size in bagelturf.
I wonder if my use of blue folders is causing this. I have one main project with nearly all of the images. It's called India. I then have blue folders within this project for each of the states/big cities I've visited. I even have one blue folder which covers an entire state in addition to blue folders for the individual districts within that state (the state folder is a replication of all of these individual blue folder districts).
Is this the root of the problem?
    Ross

After the above suggestion, I've now rearranged my library using a blue folder hierarchy (what I referred to above as blue folders was in fact blue albums)
My highest level is a blue folder (Asia 2008). At the next level I have two small projects (Cambodia and Thailand). I also have a trip to India but this is a very large collection so I have inserted a blue folder (India 2008) at this second level. The India folder is then divided into individual projects for the different parts of India that I have travelled in. For the moment I can see no use for brown folders - is this a mistake?
Is this a better arrangement performance wise?
Deleting the previous arrangment of top levels projects with India geographically divided using blue albums has caused a dramatic decrease in my library size - from over 5GB to 2GB with a total of 3500 images - 580Kb each now. I guess those blue albums are memory consumers.

  • Export All images with Folder Hierarchy?

    Hi,
I use Lightroom all the time but would like to have all my photos available on my Iphone but it is not compatible with raw files. Is there a way that I could export all my images but keep their folder hierarchy intact so I would end up with a duplicate set of folders the same as I have in lightroom but the new set would only contain jpegs?
    Thanks
    Matt

I do just that with a free tool that has been published on "another" forum.
I'm not so sure if I can put th elink down here, but search for
Preserving Folder Tree Hierarchy using Export Plugins in 2.0
and you'll find a solution. Read the thread to the end, there are a number of improvement that never got into the "official" release.

  • Mirror folder hierarchy

    Hi,
I want my CWS to mirror the source repository structure. I used the DB CWS example to start my development. When I created a crawler, I never see the option to "Mirror folder hierarchy" or "Import security...". Is there something that I should changed?
    Thanks

    Hi Syuroff,
In this case, you should use the root as /Volumes/Drive2/AUSST_Updates/updates/oobe and the url you need to specify should point to this location. For example if http://serverx:8080 points to /Volumes/Drive2/AUSST_Updates then you need to specify the url as http://serverx:8080/updates/oobe. If you allow directory browsing, then you can verify that the URL http://serverx:8080/updates/oobe points to /Volumes/Drive2/AUSST_Updates/updates/oobe. Once you ensure this, you have to run
    AdobeUpdateServerSetupToolCS5 --root="/Volumes/Drive2/AUSST_Updates/updates/oobe"
and select appropriate option to sync with Adobe Update Server. Once this step is completed, you will see two folders namely updates and webfeed created under /Volumes/Drive2/AUSST_Updates/updates/oobe location. Now you can run another command to generate the client config file:
    AdobeUpdateServerSetupTool2.0  --genclientconf="/Volumes/Drive2/AUSST_Updates/updates/oobe/config"
                                                           --root="/Volumes/Drive2/AUSST_Updates/updates/oobe"
                                                           --url="http://serverx:8080/updates/oobe"
As mentioned in my earlier post, this command will create a folder named config under /Volumes/Drive2/AUSST_Updates/updates/oobe/config
location. This folder will contain all the override files for both Mac and Windows.
Let me know if this answers your query.
    Thanks,

  • ITunes folder hierarchy.

Is there somewhere I could find an open view of the iTunes folder hierarchy, showing where my Music goes? The reason being, I have several folders named "Music", and I am not sure which one, or where to move it to on my new iMac.
    user/myname/Music, contains two folders:
    (1) iTunes, which contains: Album Artwork, iTunes Library, Extras.itdb, Genius.itdb, and iTunes Media, (which contains another "Music" folder) and Automatically add to iTunes.
    (2) Music, which holds all my iTunes Albums.
Exactly which folder should my music be in? I cannot find a folder named iTunes library, and want to make sure that everything is as it should be.
    thanks in advance.

The folder structure looks something like this:
The red outline is the *iTunes Music* or *iTunes Media* folder. If you change the default media location in preferences this is the stuff that is moved. Keeping the one folder nested inside the other is best however because the whole thing (iTunes) can be moved somewhere else without "breaking" your library. As stated elsewhere the default location for the top level iTunes folder is inside your profile's Music folder.
There is no standard folder called "iTunes Library". Depending on the context "iTunes Library" refers to the entire iTunes folder, its subfolders and their contents, or everything outside the media folder, or just the *iTunes Library.itl* file. You can, if you wish, have more than one iTunes library and the top folder doesn't have to be called "iTunes".

  • Export: Maintain Folder Hierarchy -

it would be very useful if lightroom could export a group of images maintaining the existing folder hierarchy, instead of dumping them all into one folder -
as in, i import my images into lightroom, sort the images into subfolders, put them through develop (or not), then when choosing export i have an option to create a new folder containing the exported images arranged in the same folder structure as in lightroom
(then i upload these images to a php gallery system that creates thumbs, gallery page, etc)
it would be great if i didn't have to re-organize the exported images after exporting...

Going with Jeff's one feature, don't mix it rule:
The ability to export our collection and folder hierarchy would be a very useful tool. It would allows users to create final output copies of our images in what their normal relational folder location. A bank of collections that contain the output from a job may contain numerous collections of virtual copies of Colour/B&W/Sepia/bordered images to go for proofing to clients. The client could peruse these by type and make decisions based on these. It is especially useful in the case of burning out our exports to create a usable hierarchy on the disk. Otherwise Lightroom can only be used to export all images to one folder, or used to export individual collections, that must then be hand sorted into our hierarchy and burned from an external application. As Lightroom is designed to speed our workflow, this would be a very useful addition to the toolset.

  • 2 issues - Invalid Serial Number issue & Lightroom 5 Trial vs full version folder hierarchy question

    Hello
not sure if I should split these two questions...
1 - Invalid Serial Number issue
I'm helping out a friend with their large photo collection and they bought Lightroom 5 and received the serial number but when we add this to Lightroom it states that it's invalid - I tried leaving it until the following week (I visit them weekly) and it still refusing the number - when I went into their Adobe account and took a look at downloads the option to download the full version is greyed out (or an x - I'm not sat on their computer right now so can't double check) but it wouldn't allow me to do anything so we just had the trial version.
anyone know what the issue is - shall I get them to contact Adobe to get them to take a look - I also had issues trying to find a customer support email address lol. (I seem to faffing with lots of websites/software/companies this week so getting a little frazzled!)
2 - Lightroom 5 Trial vs full version folder hierarchy question
This question is linked to the above i- I am wondering if the folders in Lightroom are different in the trial version vs the fully paid version.
I had set up some greeting card templates and contact sheet layouts for my friend and tried to transfer them to her computer but whilst, LR 'sees' the folders it just doesn't acknowledge the templates - I tried it several ways but I've not had that issue before so will that sort itself when I get the serial number fixed?
Thank you for any help or suggestions - hope you all have a good weekend :-)
    Lenny

Hi Lenny, the two questions may be related but the trial is actually the same as the full version. I would suggest getting the serial number issue sorted out first. There have been known issues where a paid for product still shows up as a trial. There is not a lot the community can do. You need to contact Adobe directly using the link below. Use the dropdown menu for boxes (1) & (2) to scroll down the list and choose:
    1. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom
    2. Serial number issues or activating my product
    3. Click on the blue button: Still need help? Contact us – then click the button marked “chat now”
It’s usually possible to start a live chat, if an Adobe agent is free, and often to get the problem fixed right away.

  • Import preserving folder hierarchy

    Hi all,
I have many (>100) folders (within folders) of photos on a harddisk which I would like to import into LR while preserving the folder hierarchy structure. Is there a way to import all folders at the same time while preserving the hierarchy or is the only way to import each and every folder one after the other.
    Thanks, Bob

    Hi Bob,
Just put 'em where you want 'em to be (if they're not already), then if you don't already have the root folder in Lightroom - import one photo from the top-level - that way you get the root folder created in Lightroom - even if its a fake photo just to get things going.
Then just do a folder-sync on the root - it'll get all of 'em in place. (hint: Right/Ctrl-click the root folder, then select 'Synchronize Folder' - I recommend not showing the import dialog box or you may be there all day...)
