Folders v. tags

Some of the most helpful posters in here regularly make statements about the advantages of tags, captions and so on and advise people to 'forget about folders'. For example, dj_paige wrote a few weeks ago:
Folders is an antique method of organizing, and the PSE Organizer was designed to replace folders with a more powerful set of tools. Instead, think in terms of tags and captions, because these give you a much more powerful way to organize and slice and dice your photos than folders gives you. With tags, for example, you can search your photos across numerous vacations to find just those photos that your children are in. You can't do that easily with folders. There are many more advantages...
A Windows user, I can't help thinking that this may be misleading. It's fine if all you want to do is create a museum with all your pictures carefully catalogued so you can quickly locate and admire particular specimens. But many of us use PSE's editing functions to enhance our own or other people's pictures, with a view to using them in some other context. However many tags, captions, albums and stacks I create in Organizer, they don't help me to find a picture of Mayor Goldstein to place in the newsletter I'm composing in Indesign, or to put in the email I'm about to send, or to upload to a website, or to illustrate the report I'm writing in Word, for example. In all these cases, I have to know which folder the picture is in, because the applications I'm using have to be able to find
it. Until applications get wise enough to be able to read PSE's proprietary metadata, there's no substitute for carefully constructed, meaningful file names in an equally carefully designed folder structure. Add to that Windows' capability to add searchable keywords, comments and other file properties, and the return on the time spent tagging pictures in the PSE Organizer gets smaller and smaller.
I'd be interested to hear in what ways PSE 'replaces folders with a more powerful set of tools' and what the 'many more advantages' are.

Thanks for your comments, and sorry for taking so long to respond. I've been trying to devise some sort of hybrid system (Colin Codebreaker: there will always be a mixture of the two philosophies) bearing in mind what you've written, and I'll probably get there in the end.
When Colin says All my images finish up in Folders based on the Shot Date, he highlights some of the difficulties inherent in the 'forget about folders' approach. First, it seems to me a criminal waste of a valuable data point (the folder name) just to re-use the shot date, which any system (including Windows) that can read the exif data will have access to anyway. Folder names and hierarchies are an immensely powerful first-level sorting option that any Windows process can make use of, so it makes sense to me to use them wisely. Second, only a fraction of my images come from my camera. My photographer drops his into a shared folder on my machine, some I download from FTP or websites, and many come by email or on removable media. So I have to use purpose-orientated folders rather than
subject- or date-orientated ones.
Colin and John RE both point out that you can drag and drop images from the Organiser into other applications. I've tried this with Indesign, and it works properly inasmuch as D&D creates a link to the image file (D&D from PS does as well, but from Illustrator doesn't). But because the PSE window is so big, it's not easy to execute on a small monitor like my laptop screen - there just isn't the space clearly to see both the source and the destination of a D&D. The D&D icon (a baby thumbnail with a hand in the middle) makes accurate placing impossible; when I drop, the image seems to land with its top left-hand corner at the middle of the icon, which of course conceals the dropping point at the destination. If I D&D from Bridge or within Indesign, the dropping point is precisely at the
top left-hand corner of the thumbnail.
dj_p extols the virtues of tags and captions to help find particular images. The cross-referencing capabilities that this facilitates are indeed powerful, but I already have that capability using built-in Windows tools. Tagging by D&D is quick and easy, but keywords are then written to an extra file - so for 10,000 images I need 20,000 files! Sure, I can then write those keywords and other data to the image file itself (for some types of file), but for some reason not to the properties fields that the OS provides for the purpose. If someone could suggest a utility that would write IPTC data to the Windows Title, Subject, Category and Keyword fields, I'd be very happy. I could then use Organizer solely to apply keyword tags - which it's very good at - and forget about all its other bells
and whistles.
The workflow that dj_p suggests for locating a file to put into a document seems very cumbersome to me: fire up Organizer, find the file, export it to another folder, then in the receiving app locate that folder and file and place it. Organizer is very resource-hungry (it's currently using 475MB of VM, having peaked at 585MB, and has clocked up an astonishing 9 mio IO reads/writes since I launched it about twelve hours ago. By contrast, Windows SearchIndexer has only performed 745,000 reads/writes to maintain its index of almost 600,000 files), so I'm loth to have it running alongside, say, Indesign just to make use of its search facility. It's much quicker and easier to locate a file if it has a meaningful file name and lives in a meaningfully-named folder. I have also tried Bridge, which
makes the process easier still if the image files I need are stored in folders allocated for the purpose to which I want to put them. In its Compact mode, Bridge acts just like another Indesign panel and I can select files to place at the drop of a hat. Perhaps a compact mode for PSE(O) could be a feature request.
So, again, I maintain that the PSE Organizer is fine for those who only want to set up an indexed and cross-referenced gallery of pictures, but there's no substitute for a carefully thought-out file- and folder structure if those pictures are to be used for any other purpose.

  • Importing photos in folders

How do I import 3500 photos in 12 folders to stay in their 12 folders when imported so I don't have to do that work all over again?  I am not familiar with PSE at all so haven't imported my photos (with thumb drive) not knowing what will happen when I do!

I want to put all photos into Photoshop Elements on this computer and then put all onto an external hard drive.  Is this possible?
No, it is not possible. The photos will NEVER be stored in Photoshop Elements.
when I download all of these photos from my thumb drive (they are not on this computer) where are the photos going in PhotoShop and in what order?
If you use Photoshop elements to do this download, the photos will be placed on your hard disk, somewhere, depending on where you tell PSE to put them (or the default location). As stated, they will not be stored in Photoshop Elements.
Instead, you should move the photos onto your external hard disk using your operating system, thus maintaining whatever folders you have, and then use the PSE command File->Get Photos ...>From Files and Folders When you do this, your photos remain exactly where you put them. They are not stored in Photoshop ELements; instead Photoshop Elements knows the location of your photos, so it can find the photos when you issue PSE commands to do something with the photos. As a consequence of this, once you import the photos using the File->Get Photos ... command, you must use PSE thereafter to manage these photos; you cannot move, rename or delete these photos (or the folders that contain them) outside of PSE.
I really would cry if I had to separate 3500 photos into their correct folders again!
So, if you have followed the above advice, your photos will be in the folders that you want them to be in.
And now some additional advice. The Photoshop Elements Organizer has other tools — not folders, but tags, captions and notes — that can be used for organizing. It is strongly recommended that you transition from using your folders as an organizing tool, to using tags as your primary organizing tool. This gives you greater power to organize in ways that folders cannot possibly achieve. If you want to continue to use folders as your primary organizing tool, and NOT use tags and other PSE tools, then there really isn't much of a reason to use the PSE Organizer. In fact, if you want to continue to use folders as your primary organizing tool, and NOT use tags and other PSE tools, then I would say don't use the PSE Organizer, it adds extra steps, and more restrictions, and a less-friendly interface than your operating system to achieve this folder organization.

  • How to transfer folders?

I just purchased PS Elements 12 to replace old PS Album 2.0.  When I installed Elements, I assumed that it would transfer all old PS folders and tags, but it didn't. How do I move all these old folders over to new soflware?

    In theory, this should work
    http://helpx.adobe.com/elements-organizer/using/creating-editing-catalogs.html#use_convert _a_catalog_of_a_previous_version
However, I believe I have seen reports that indicate PSA 2.0 catalogs don't get upgraded, perhaps its just too old. Nevertheless, it is worth a try. Can't hurt anything.

  • Compare 'Folder tags' to imported Keyword Tags

I have asked questions about thumbnails in PSE11 that aren't being correctly displayed ,but I have yet to get any answers.
I though perhaps I should breakdown the problem into easier component to see if I can get to understand just what is going on & be able to fix the problem myself.
For instance if I open the 'My Folders' I see a list of file names that correspond to those 'imported keyword tags.'  If I take a folder called China I see the thumbnails & when I hover the mouse I see that it has tags China,Beijing area & my wife's name.  If I were then to go to the imported Keyword Tags & I can see a tag 'Dubai'.  Just to see what happens I drag the picture to the Dubai tag.  This is accepted.  Because if I go back to the original tag I now see tags China,Beijing area,& my wife's name as well as Dubai.
If I go the see the folder 'Dubai' in my folders the picture doesn't appear.  Why not? This is just a crazy experiment but I can't make out what happened.  Any Ideas?

    Hi,
Photoshop Elements does not enforce a direct relationship between Folders and Tags - they are different ways to view your images.
If you start by showing all media and then select a folder, you will get the all the images in that folder shown.
If you start by showing all media and then select a tag, you will see all the images with that tag.
If you start by showing all media, then select a folder and then select a tag, you get all the images in that folder that have the selected tag.
A tag can be applied to any image irrespective of which folder it is in.
For instance, if you have two folders called Holiday 2012 & Holiday 2013 with photos of your holidays for each of the years and in each year you have a photo of the same monument, you could tag those photos with the monument name. Later you could view all the holiday photos for a particular year or you could show the photos of the monument for the two years.
It is possible to create tags from the folder name but the relationship is not maintained.
The fact that you talk about "Imported keyword tags" suggests that you entered the tags outside of Photoshop elements before you imported them. If you had a previous version of Photoshop elements, the normal approach is to convert the old catalog. That way the tags would show up in the original structure rather than be "imported".
I hope that the above helps - forgive me if I stated what you already knew.

  • HT5839 Save files under Tags without single virtual location

Today I was wondering about the OS X Mavericks tagging system. Sometimes I try to save a file, such as an image, in the TAGS section of the finder window in Mac OS X. As soon as I do so, because it is not a location rather a search algorithm that searches for files in multiple locations, because the computer to hang. I wanted to ask if you can actually save the file as a tag,and if not then why allow it appear available in the save dialog pop-up window.it appears within the save dialog interface, and so I tried it out various times. My computer just hangs and Finder becomes unusable.my Logic says, it cannot be possible to save the file under tags, unless OS X has programmed itself to save the files and SQL data instead of as an actual file.
This would require database settings and reprogramming into the OS X Mavericks system. I should definitely think about saving files under the tag section,if it is possible, and how one will achieve it as a programmer and developer. It would be an excellent way to file things without any necessity, for knowing where they are. So long as one saves every file with the right tags. Of course one could then save under a main tag and add more tags in the text dialogue interface which pops up when you are saving a file.
Or one could remove it from the save dialogue interface completely, to avoid crashes and confusion.attack is not a particular location but then again neither is a folder really. Both folders and tags are just virtual binary code translated into pixels on the screen. I therefore do not really see any difference between an album, a folder, a photo stream, or attack or I could take very. To the binary system they are just different waysof presenting virtual data in a visual way so that humans can interface with it.but tags can be added to a file as more than one tag. And this allows for multiple terminologies and search filters to be used when searching for a file. It allows for cross reference searching.
Tagging files in OSX is an art and a science, which one must learn and have a very strict regimen with oneself, in order to achieve a truly organized filing system. but, if you truly must of this ought and I strict enough with yourself to organize your tags properly, you can have an extremely powerful way of accessing your data without having to have too many folders and visual interfaces to find them with. This requires that you manually name and tag all of your files of costs which if you work with hundreds of files a day is rather tiresome.
but that is like planting a field of flowers, you must plod along every day until you have thousands of them and it becomes enough to be called a field. Once you have planted plenty, and that means you have created lots of tags, and have the discipline to name every saved file under is relevant tags, then finally, once you have thousands of files, this will become an indispensable way of arranging and searching for your work files

Thanks for input. The price changes occur infrequently - Norton/ Symantec software. Not a lot of sku's to make a database plus page is flowery and does not need to be searched on by the user. Links connect directly to Norton. Now I make the changes on one page and "Save as" to the others but my button links fail. It is curious CS4 would make the change from images of the link in the actual link box in html. In view it works fine but on site buttons are not visible?

  • Undated folders in OSX finder

When uploading photos to Facebook sometimes you can drag & drop, others Facebook shows a Finder page with some recently updated folders right at the bottom as "No Date". Any ideas why and how it can be rectified? A separate Finder window shows the folders correctly tagged with the date last modified.

You should be able to just drag them out of there to delete them. They will go away in a puff of smoke.

  • Thunderbird updated and closed all open tabs.

I often keep an email tab open as a reminder until I act on it. Sometimes I will have 10 or so tabs open at the same time.
Yesterday I left the house for several hours leaving my computer on. When I returned, both Thunderbird and Firefox were closed. They were open when I left.
When I opened Thunderbird, all of my open tabs were closed. I have no idea what they were and I could find no list of Recently Closed Tabs so I could reopen them. I can only assume that an update occurred in my absence and that's what was responsible for closing Thunderbird.
This used to happen with Firefox occasionally after an update but you seem to have fixed that. Please fix Thunderbird so that it never closes open tabs.
    Thanks,
    Bill

Bottom line is tabs live in a file called session.json. All sorts of privacy and "speedup" type tools delete this cached information. One of the really popular ones is CCleaner. In the case of Firefox they have an additional backups they can restore from, but it is only a matter of time before these same tools. but in the case of Thunderbird functionality is somewhat reduced. Manly I think because no one at the time thought people would come to rely on tabs. In the underlying code tabs are messy and really large parts of the "vision" await further attention. Thunderbird in reality only has one and the rest is smoke and mirrors hence my particular issues re reliability long term. Compose in a tab may see more work done on the tab part of the interface to make it more robust.
Having said that I have had issues with Firefox in the very recent past, but I also run nightly builds so expect issues most people never see. (Testing comes in many forms.)
Making your own backup of the session.json file is a workaround if you feel strongly enough, but personally I think saved search folders and tags are a much improved arrangement as most IMAP servers support them so your tags appear on your other devices as well.
    My view is.
Tag mail as say "To do"
    open find Ctrl+Shift+F
set a search criteria for tags contain "to do" set the folder and sub folder to search
click search to make sure your criteria is working and then click save as search folder.
Thunderbird now has a new folder which only contains your "to do" tagged mails. Search folders are a vastly under utilises feature (probably because no one knows they exist) but they make a lot of business type functions much easier. (they are what underlies the "unified" folder view {View menu > folders > unified} a collection of search folders.

  • How do I hide some synced bookmarks on one computer (e.g., home bookmarks on a work computer)?

Firefox Sync is a great feature. I only have one problem. Some bookmarks on my home computer are not suitable for my work computer. How do I exclude or hide a single folder of bookmarks without actually deleting them on all synced computers?

I've read that Xmarks has the option to assign bookmarks to "synchronization profiles". You could then have one profile for "work bookmarks" that is synchronized across many computers or even separate firefox profiles while a profile for "personal bookmarks" may be synchronized with other computers.
The closest thing Firefox synch could support is creating separate firefox surfing profiles and synch accounts for each set of bookmarks you want to synch. You could then select from your profiles using the profile manager (make a shortcut to firefox that launches firefox with the -p or -profilemanager option (both work) "C:\..... firefox.exe -p". It's less convenient, but could work.
Ultimately, I'd love it if firefox would just enable synching bookmarks with certain tags (tag a bookmark work, it gets replicated on all firefox synch accounts with the work tag). People think in folders, but tags would be even better imho.

  • Is there any tool or method to find the exact disk space/memory required for a query to execute in certain time

    Hi,
We have SSIS Package, which in-turn executes some Stored procedures .
This Package runs fine at certain time, say 30 minutes which is acceptable. But sometimes, it takes around 1.5 hr. There was no modification done to the package, and the amount of data handled by the package is also same.
I have a doubt that some other big process may be running in parallel when this package is getting executed.
All the Databases are on D drive in the server and currently there is 140 GB free space out of 1 TB.
Now, using sp_who2 I can check what are the big processes which are running in parallel when this package is getting executed and get their Disk I/O.
Now having these information, is there any way to determine, amount of space/memory required to execute a particular query in 30 minutes.
Or to put a question in other way, I have a query and I know its acceptable execution time(30 min). Now is there any way to determine the criteria to get that execution time.
NOTE: The query is optimized and required indexes are created. It was running fine, until 1 week back. Suddenly the execution time has increased.
Can some one please help me in this. Please let me know if you need any further information on this.
Also whenever these jobs are running, sometimes job activity monitor and SSMS gets frozen. Any idea what does this indicate?
    Thanks in advance,

Presently, all of my images are stored on windows photo gallery. I have them organized into folders& subfolders. would the same folders and sub folders be exported into lrm as labeled. I know you do this under import mode  and add from others.   Would it behove me to make sure all of my gallery folders are properly labeled tagged etc. before i do this transfer.    When i do the transfer can i rename the folders,re-tag them etc.  Thanks!!

Just select add when you import them and they will be added right in place.  You can use LR to move and rename folders.

  • Photoshop 11 problem with all files not able to display

I recently purchased PS Elements 11.  Somehow my photos trippled and in some cases more.  I have spent hour deleting triplicate photos and cleaning up folders, tags and pictures.  It has been a mess.  Yesterday I was working on a Tag and clicked something, not sure what.  Now I can only view 1 photo out of around 10,000.  alll of the folders and Tags say no media displayed when I click them.  The all media shows only one photo.  I looked in my recycle bin and the photos are not in there.  Any questions or suggestions out there?  As you may imagine my frustration level is high!

This is the photoshop forum try the PSE forum at http://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop_elements
If on windows OS open up Window Explorer and see what is happening.  What you are saying does not make sense.  Would avoid deleting stuff until you figure out what is going on.

  • IPhoto hangs, found Console message

Though I'm a Mac user for over 10 years, I'm no good when deciphering Console jargon or attempting a Terminal command.  My iPhoto has (as well as most everything else with Mavericks) been unusually slow when opening, importing, changing folders, editing, tagging, opening a slideshow, etc...pretty much in every way.
I opened Console as advised and found this repeated message (happening 4-5 times per second) while I was either opening iPhoto or importing 3 photos:

the final line of text that stopped this repeated text was:

Any ideas what any of this means?  I'm really at a loss with this data...looks like something in my iPhoto library is invalid?
I know this next question shouldn't be in the iPhoto section, but perhaps it is related somehow.
I don't recall what I was doing at the time, but one minute prior to the iPhoto messages, I noted these messages alternatiing over 60 times:

OOOKKKAAAY, I exported a slideshow this afternoon (about 800 photos) and as has been the case for a couple years, it took forever....the second half of the exoprt had no preview screen, just a black box.  It must have taken 2 hours.
I just looked at Console and found a MOUNTAIN of errors.  One thing I noticed about the exported slideshow is that some of my preferences for individual slides were not maintained and the show went on as if I didn't edit/alter the overall theme of the slideshow.  I went back and personalized each slide setting again to find they sometimes worked in preview mode, but then when I returned, my preference for the slides were missing.  FRUSTRATING.  And so are those obscenely replicating Console messges...I'll throw out a few that have taken over my screen real estate:

  • 808 Belle FP2 gallery missing features

Nokia 808 Belle FP2's gallery is still crippled. There is no way to organize photos into folders or tag them in any useful manner. And there no possibility to select multiple items for sharing etc. Gallery cannot zoom images that are downloaded to the phone from other sources no matter how big these images are.
None of these limitations were present in Symbian Anna, so this is a major drawback and downgrade in terms of features even this 808 shoud be Nokias's current flag ship phone on photography domain.

    I Updated my Nokia 603 to FP2.
New Camera UI, music Player and details tab in gallery are very appreciated.
Also, several new widgets and performance improvements are satisfactory.
    Problems I encountered are,
    1) I can't send several photos from gallery by marking them, and don't see the option to sort by ascending or descending dates.
    2) Also, Message Editor takes 3-4 sec. to rotate when keyboard is raised.
    3) Contacts are scrambled, not sorted Alphabeticaly. They keep changing everytime.
    4) Music Player takes 2-3 seconds to play a song when clicked on it.
    5) Another minor bug is the time stamp of Message Sending. Sometimes, a message fails to be sent. It's then scheduled to be  'Resend at .......' But if you send it manually, that 'resend' time is attached to the message. not the actual one. It's not a major bug but it makes the Conversational View scattered.
