Follow-up - Phantom disc at log-in
Regulars may recall my previous (now archived) post on this problem.
I finally tracked the problem down but first a summary fyi.
At start-up my 3.06ghz iMac kept reporting that it couldn't find a disc.
I had 'cloned' this Leopard machine from my older 2ghz iMac loaded with Tiger & suspected that the newer machine was searching for something on the older machine.
I had basically given up trying to nut out the problem.
Thanks to Snow Leopard (now installed on my machines) I was able to confirm that the problem was related to the other iMac.
Under Leopard you are just told that the machine can't find a disc in an alert window.
Under Snow Leopard it tells you which disc it can't find. This confirmed that it was hunting for something on the older machine.
So I tried start-up with the other machine switched on & no alert. That confirmed it.
Then I checked start-up items again on the 3.06 & it struck me.
I had never colour calibrated the 3.06 iMac yet there was a colour profile created by Spyder 2 Express in the start-up list.
This was the calibration profile created on the 2ghz iMac that had been cloned onto the 3.06.
I took it out of the list & problem solved!!!
It also explains another mystery of why sometimes my 3.06 would start-up with a dimmed down screen...
Thanks everyone for your input, one to put away in the memory banks for future reference.
Hi Weston,
If I unhook from the TC & start-up I get two alert panels the same - server not found etc... (as quoted in my OP)
At the moment there is basically nothing except keyboard, mouse, EyeTV tuner & USB hub connected.
The alert is received even when the only things plugged in are kb & m.
It really has me flummoxed.

Can this issue be solved by means of firmware/updates, terminal command lines, or through other open source OS?
Is this issue related to lense cleanliness?
Much thanks!

Message was edited by: saltislandsamI have also tried TDK, Maxell, Verbatim and Sony media
Me too. Out of that list the only brand that has NEVER produced a coaster (on the same burner as yours) is Verbatim DVD-R and Fuji DVD-R. All the others produced a 25-50% failure rate.
Have you tried burning at a slower speed?
Using 16x DVD media is fine - in fact it is difficult to buy any other - but there is a consensus in the Apple Support Forums that a slower burn is a better burn i.e. 2x or 4x (slow burns are better burns!). I always use Toast for burning.
The term "Best" means the fastest speed that the drive told Toast it can write to a specific disc. The drive's firmware and info on the disc decide what speed burns are available. When you press the speed setting button in Toast (after inserting a disc) you'll likely see some speeds in italics and some in bold face. The ones in bold face are supported by that media on that drive. The fastest one is what Toast calls Best.
Audio CDs in particular should be burned at the lowest supported speed.
Verification is a good indicator the disc is burned okay. However, other DVD players can still have problems with the disc. Media problems with various drives is not uncommon. Slower burning may reduce the chance of those problems, and is one of the reasons why RW (read/write) media is always rated slower than DVD-R.
There are some interesting facts here:
http://www.osta.org/technology/dvdqa/dvdqa4.htm and here:
http://www.osta.org/technology/dvdqa/dvdqa4.htm
But many will tell you that the 'slower burn is best' theory is outdated. Who really knows? At the end of the day, if your home-made DVD was verified by Toast and will play anywhere on anybody's DVD player, then that is the result we are all after! -
I am setting up a shared hard drive via airpot extreme base station. I followed the instructions to set up user accounts to set privileges to the disk and upon completion and logging in no files are showing up on the disk?
You have to declare your intention to keep the disk appendable each time you write something, or the last thing you wrote is the last it will accept.

Hi
I've bought a Canon Pixma MP620, installed software and drivers but can't get the printer to show to add it through system preferences. I have installed the latest drivers off the Canon website but still no luck.
I have repaired using running disc utility and got the following in the disc utility log:

Still no luck.
Anyone have any suggestions what I can do now?
Thanks,
JasonI have the 610. Drivers must be a year old by now. Everything works fine.
My personal rule-of-thumb check list for this kind of issue is:
1) Check your cables
2) Assume human error
3) Check your cables again
4) Scream Khannnnnnn!!!!!!! at the top of your lungs.
5) Check your cables and try a different USB port
6) Return the printer. -

What could be problem
also in first error log I found
Connecting to database with connect string : "(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=https)(PORT=//escis-000567.eschq.esc.state.)))(CONNECT_DATA=(SID=80)))"
why it picks up https as HOST name. I think that's problem. How to resolve it ?
Thanks
~KeyurPlease post the details of the application release, database version and OS.
I am getting several of these messages in the Apache error logfile.
File does not exist: $JAVA_TOP (this is actually my physical patch for $JAVA_TOP)Is this the complete error message?
Is it normal to see this messages or some configuration is wrong? If your application is functioning properly with no issues, then you can ignore those errors.
Thanks,

Using Disc Utility to Make a Bootable Clone
Need some help, please.
OS 10.4.6.
I have an external hard drive partitioned to 3 volumes; I back up 3 computers on it to keep off site. Following instructions Kappy has posted, I initially set up as follows:
1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
7. Select the startup volume from the left side list.
8. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
9. Drag the startup volume to the Source entry field.
10. Select the external volume from the leftside list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
11. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Then when I would do a backup of one of the computers, I would essentially follow steps 4 - 11 above: erase and zero out that volume, and also make sure that the "Ignore Privilges" box was unchecked (Get Info) for the external volume I was backing up to (cloning to), and in Disc Utility/Restore, making sure "Erase Destination" is checked.
Also, I have always disabled Spotlight, and clone in Safe Mode (per some help Dr. Smoke has provided).
Had no problems making new clones until today. All 3 clones are at 10.4.6. Went to reclone one of my computers (just to make sure I was 100% current) so I could try 10.4.8, using the above sequence, and at about 3 minutes into the "restore" consistently got an error: "An error occurred (2) while copying. No such file directory."
Well, I erased again and tried again; rebooted and tried a 3rd time and a 4th and kept getting that same message.
Checked the website for the external and no new drivers out there.
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
I did a CCC just to be safe, but MUCH prefer a Disc Utility clone ( I also have another external I do a Retrospect Duplicate on, but I really want a good solid Disc Utility non incremental, fresh of the hard drive clone).
Thoughts?

Warnings of files not being included in final disc
I've had a terrible time trying to learn to burn a movie DVD for my kids to play on their TVs/DVDs and was hoping someone here recognizes what I've done wrong. I've created a sequence in Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 (part of FCP Studio 2), used compressor to create the files ending in .ac3 and .m2v (and it also created one ending in .aiff). I imported these into DVD Studio Pro 4 and created a menu with 4 chapters (marked in the timeline). Not sure from the manual if I linked them right or not, but seems that I did. Then when I clicked build/format that worked well (said it was successful). But when I went to burn it I got the following messages in the Build Log.
Warning: The file ‘IVEY_20022003.layout’ found in the VIDEO_TS or HVDVD_TS folder will not be included in the final disc.
Warning: The file ‘VOB_DATA.LAY’ found in the VIDEO_TS or HVDVD_TS folder will not be included in the final disc.
I tried burning this to both a DVD-R and a DVD+R. Both show only the menu screen when I play it on a DVD player, but give the "Not Available" circle with a slash indicator when I tried to play them, use any DVD remote command button, or click on a menu graphic.
What have I done wrong?
What other info do you need to know?
TIAThe problem is that you have created a HD DVD, not a SD DVD. HD DVDs will not play in stand alone DVD players. You need to delete the VIDEO_TS and HDDVD_TS folders that DVD SP created. Then open up DVD SP and get into the Preferences and change the settings to SD DVD. The bad news is now you have to start all over again and create your project again in DVD SP. You cannot start from your old project.
The warnings about .layout and .LAY files can be ignored. They are not the problem. -
DISC RECORDER NOT FOUND...?
i can't burn cd's from my itunes to a disc. when logging on to itunes a WARNING box appears: THE REGISRTY SETTINGS BY ITUNES DRIVERS FOR IMPORTING AND BURNING CD'S & DVD'S ARE MISSING. THIS CAN HAPPEN AS A RESULT OF INSTALLING OTHER CD BURNING SOFTWARE. PLEASE REINSTALL ITUNES. i have reinstalled the soft ware numerous times and still I get the same messages. I think my ipod is shot completly now. It does not turn on any more. oh.. and what caused all this to happen was my ipod some times would not show up in my itunes. If anyone can help it would be great. thanks
if you'd prefer to try some quicker and dirtier techniques, you could try:
reboot and repair
reboot the PC (very important), and then do a repair install of itunes. go to your Add/Remove programs, select itunes, click "change/remove" and select "repair".
... if no joy with that:
reinstall the itunes drivers for importing and burning
you can find them at the following page. if you're on a 32-bit system, use the first link on the page:

The attempt to burn a disc failed. Not good.
Well, I feel like I have exhausted all means to fix my problem. Can't seem to burn a CD. Tried using the Utility functions in resetting my permissions and nothing seemed to work. I open itunes and select a playlist to burn, insert a blank disc, click the burn disc icon and I hear the attempt to burn. But after 30 seconds, the time in the message box starts to increase rather than decrease as the writing of the playlist stops completely. The message I get reads "The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry." In my console disc recording log the following appears:

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Here is a solution that worked for me!
1. Uninstall iTunes 12
2. Download and install iTunes 11.4
3. Run iTunes 11.4. You will get a message that the library was created by a newer version. Just dismiss the message.
4. Uninstall iTunes 11.4
5. Install iTunes 12.0.1 again. This time disc burning should be working.
(The prior installation of 11.4 fixes the issue)
I hope this works for you as well
Note
My iTunes 12.0.1 installation was a fresh one to start with. I am using the x64 version on Windows 8.1 x64. -
Disc was not ejected properly...
When trying to burn a disc it corrupted, I ejected and disposed of it. Ever since I am getting the following message popping up every 10 minutes or so:
"The disc was not ejected properly. If possible, always eject the disc before unplugging it or turning it off."
I tried disc utilities, logging in as a different user, writing a new disc, I even dug out the old disc from my rubbish bin and inserted it. It's of no avail. the message keeps popping up regularly as clockwork, for over a week now.
Can anybody help please? What kind of drive is it. Some drives have problems with Snow Leopard, but I'm not sure if that would be related. If they go to sleep and the system can't access them, it might think they got disconnected.

I have been using the same username for my iTunes for years. I use it on iCloud, the App Store...everything. About a year ago, I completed an iTunes update on my Toshiba Satellite laptop and was unable to listen to any music on my iTunes after that. Nothing would play. I followed some "advice" on the Apple Support Communities since it was clearly an issue several people had. The advice had quite a lengthy process which included eventually removing iTunes and reinstalling it. I did the process step by step (which supposedly worked for others), and I was never able to log in to iTunes again. My iPhone music still worked since I hadn't logged out of iTunes, as did my iPod (Nano, Classic, and my new Nano) since you don't log out of those. I have since logged out of iTunes on my iPhone and I was never able to log back in and it shows that I have no music because it claims I do not have an account (though I can log in to the iCloud or App Store with my account).
I also have a MacBook Air and an iPad Mini. I never used my iTunes on the MacBook Air, so I have tried logging in there, and have also tried "approving" this computer for iTunes use but still...I can log into iCloud, the App Store, and have verified my account on the Apple support page (http://www.apple.com/support/appleid/) but I still get the following error:
I still am logged in to my iTunes on my iPad though I know if I log out, I will never be able to log in again. It does not have all of my music on it...just some of it. My Classic has all of my music, and my old Nano has since died. I never got to load anything onto my new Nano. So, I opened up a ticket with Apple and of course there was the big runaround saying I had to pay for service on my MacBook Air since it's a problem with my MacBook Air, but after much arguing, I got it through their head that it's a problem with my Toshiba, Macbook Air, iPhone, and will be with my iPad as well if I logged out of iTunes. They finally opened a ticket and had me to talk to several people. The last person to work on it at Apple stated she was sending it to an engineer, because even she tried logging in with the same username and password and was unable to, though she was able to log into my iCloud. She "remoted" in to my MacBook, and could not find anything wrong either. The last I heard from them was in June 2014 where they told me they were moving this to an engineer (after 3-hours of being on the line with them) and stated that I would receive a call back, which of course never happened. I have called that person back several times since she had given me her extension, and she does not return my calls. In the meantime, I have tried several times to just change my password on the account, and it changes my password on every account but I still am unable to log in to my iTunes.
Here are the notes I took while on the phone with them:
June 2014:
Case ID: 619383300
xxx (can't remember his name...maybe Scott??? Transferred to Tim)
Tim (iTunes. Can't see an iTunes problem. Believes this is a computer problem)
Eric (did the sharing session. He's with "mac problems". Immediately said I would have to get a warranty for my computer in order to receive support. I refused since I was not going to warranty my iPhone, Macbook Air, Toshiba PC, and iPad just because of an iTunes problem). He later stated this is a problem with my internet provider, because of the blocks i have set up for my children. I do not have blocks set up, never have, and it can't be an ISP problem because it would be an ISP problem with my UK internet, US internet, sisters, brothers, and parents ISP's as well since I have used their internet and still cannot access iTunes. Sending back to iTunes)
Tay (iTunes Senior advisor. Sharing session. Checked Apple ID while remoted in to my computer. Cannot see any problems. Sending up to Engineer. Sending me a case number and personal contact number.) I never heard back, though I was told by Tay that an engineer would contact me regarding this issue.
iTunes started a new case ID: 669806831 dated Sept 27, 2014
28 Sept: Received an email from Anand at Apple iTunes support which told me to contact Apple Support at http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 to get a phone number to call in and pay for support on my device, though it's not a device issue which has already been acknowledged previously. iTunes support will not help me so I contacted Apple support. They say this is an iTunes problem, not an Apple problem. iTunes says this is an Apple problem, not an iTunes problem.
29 Sept: Left a message with Tay who was the last one handling the original case.
October: Left another message with Tay who never called me back in September, or June. I have left my phone number and original case number but she continues ignoring my calls.
Does anyone have any advice on this? I'm tired of sitting in a silent house because I have no music because the customer service at Apple is terrible and just blew me off.
So far this is an issue with my Apple ID just not being able to log into iTunes on ANY computer...whether it's a Windows 7 based PC or an Apple product. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes on every product except the iPad (I don't use my iPhone anymore since it's old and I have a new phone).I guess Apple decided to hiccup and I was able to log in. This was not the first time I tried this procedure, but this is how it happened. I was not able to log in after the export from iBooks Author. I closed iTunes Producer and then opened it through Launchpad. I logged in with the account that is set up for the book, selected open package, and, I'll be danged if it didn't open this time. Unbelievable... I don't think it is what I did. I think Apple hiccuped or cleared her throat.

How to log successful logins to a syslog server in NX-OS
Does anyone know how to do this in NX-OS? I do it in IOS with the following commands:
login on-failure log
login on-success log
logging x.x.x.x
With that I get a syslog message that I can then log to a file to track who has logged into which device and when. But I can't find the syntax to do the same thing in the Nexus switches that we have. Does anyone know what the equivalent commands are?
Thanks,
BenHi Ben,
By default, failed logins are logged.
You can checked the log using:
show logging logfile | last 15
and for every logging failed (by default) you will get something like this:
2012 Dec 18 14:51:08 Nexus5010-B %AUTHPRIV-3-SYSTEM_MSG: pam_aaa:Authentication
failed for user en from 2.2.2.1 - login
To get the success-login to show up in the logs we need to increase the level of the authpriv to 5 (it is 3 by default), and doing this will add a new log for failed or succesful connections.
Use the following command:
Nexus5010-A(config)# logging level authpriv 5
You can check loggin levels by using:
#show logging level
After you do this with the logging level you will see in the log something like this when a succesful login takes place:
2005 Jan 6 03:29:48 Nexus5010-A %AUTHPRIV-5-SYSTEM_MSG: admin :TTY=unknown
; PWD=/var/sysmgr/vsh ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/usr/bin/strings/proc/18340/environ
- sudo
Now for a failed login and after increasing the authpriv level you will see the following logs:
2005 Jan 6 03:31:36 Nexus5010-A %AUTHPRIV-4-SYSTEM_MSG: pam_unix(aaa:auth):check pass; user unknown - aaad
2005 Jan 6 03:31:36 Nexus5010-A %AUTHPRIV-5-SYSTEM_MSG: pam_unix(aaa:auth):
aut
hentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty= ruser= rhost= - aaad
For logging *****
Nexus7018(config)# logging ?
console Set console logging
event Interface events
ip IP configuration
level Facility parameter for syslog messages
logfile Set File logging
message Interface events
module Set module(linecard) logging
monitor Set terminal line(monitor) logging level
origin-id Enable origin information for Remote Syslog Server
server Enable forwarding to Remote Syslog Server
source-interface Enable Source-Interface for Remote Syslog Server
timestamp Set logging timestamp granularity
You can use logging source-interface ....
Thanks-
Afroz
