Font mystery - anyone care to solve?
I've just joined a new job and the mac mini they've supplied me with doesn't seem to have Myriad Semibold Condensed, though all other Myriads are present.
The only other mac (G5) in the studio has semibold condensed installed but when we looked for it (to copy over to my mac) we couldn't find the individual font file? All other myriads are in the obvious locations, and spotlight returned nothing.
I'm totally stumped, as is the G5 user. Any ideas would be great!

Hi Mat,
The font you're looking for is most likely an OpenType font installed by an Adobe CS2 or CS3 product. CS3 dumps all of the fonts it installs into the /Library/Fonts/ folder. If you don't find it there, then it was probably installed by a CS2 app. Those all get installed to the /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts/ folder. You should be able to find the individual font MyriadPro-SemiboldCond.otf there.
If you're using Font Book, right click on the font at the Mac where the font you need is and choose "Reveal in Finder". It will open up the folder right where the font is and highlight it for you. If you're using Suitcase Fusion, do the same thing. Highlight and choose Reveal in Finder.

Just finished setting up my Arch development box and it was a pleasure doing so (man Arch makes life easy).
The only thing I dislike is the default font rendering.
* DPI = 96x96 in xorg (xdpyinfo also shows 96 DPI)
* Sub pixel hinting = RGB (FULL)
* nvidia installed
* I have installed all the necessary font packages (ms fonts, deja vu, etc).
* using XFCE4
I think that this could be fixed with some tweaking in fonts.conf (don't currently have one). Anyone care to share some tips (wiki doesn't seem to have a lot on this topic).

I attempted to use netflix on my MacPro safari 10.5.8, I get a blank black screen when I attempt to watch a video, Has anyone encountered and solved this dilemma?

I try to create an html for IPad. The html page contains an element overlapping a video, now it works as for view but the focus is still with video. This denies the event of overlapping element from occuring. Can please anyone help to solve this issue?

Can anyone help me solving this problem with Mail?
I haven´t being able to send emails with MAIL for two days. I have managed 7 email accounts with 3 different servers for more than 2 years with no problem until last Monday.
Basically, what I can notice as unusual is this message from Connection Inspector:

Note, however, that some of this is based on current implementations, NOT on requirements of the JLS or VM spec, so really, the answers could be different. Overall, it's a poorly thought out question.

check and make sure that an alert style has been choosen for certain alerts, and make sure you check your sounds in settings

I've been reading the PDF specification at http://www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/devnet/acrobat/pdfs/PDF32000_2008.pdf. I started noticing nonsense characters at page 94. There are some inappropriate Pound Sterling symbols just under the table and in the last line of the page. There are a couple of Yen symbols and a superscript 3 in Example 2 on page 95 and another superscript 3 at the top of page 96. None of these make any sense where they appear. Given that this is a PDF document specifying what PDF is I'd think Adobe might want to remove the errors. On the other hand, this is supposed to be an exact copy of the ISO (I think) standard and maybe it's too much work to make such a change. But it doesn't exactly put a best foot forward for PDF. Then again, maybe nobody ever reads it. Anyway, just thought I'd mention it.

You are right that the document belongs to ISO. A final standard is just that - final. There is, so far as I know, no provision for corrections to it except a new standard. In fact people have been sitting round a table for years now working on ISO 32000-2. I imagine it will fix all the typos, and introduce new ones to confuse and annoy developers for years to come.
In fact, it's entirely possible that this is fixed in ISO 32000-1. I believe Adobe have the right only to post the final draft not the actual standard. If you want to put down your CHF 238 you can purchase the actual standard and compare. (But still, your only mechanism for correcting it would be to join your national standards body and participate in the 32000-2 deliberations. Not that that is a bad thing to do.) -
This is regarding a brand new ASUS PA 279Q, 2560 x 1440 IPS monitor. I'm connected via mini display port (into thunderbolt port on MacBook Pro) to display port on ASUS monitor; using cable ASUS included with the monitor. Mid 2012 MacBook Pro…full specs at bottom of this post.
I have resolution set at 2560 x 1440 which is the native resolution according to the ASUS spec. I tried the other resolutions available in my System Preferences and text displayed rough with those settings too. I've tried adjusting contrast, brightness and sharpness via the ASUS control panel and didn't solve the problem. Also tried calibrating via Mac's system preferences/display and that did not improve text display either. All the text on this monitor (no matter what software I launch, Finder, InDesign, Illustrator, MS Word, Excel, VMWare Windows XP, Windows versions of Word, Excel, Acrobat, etc, all are consistently rendering text the same way --- ROUGH and with "HALOS" around each letter.
All point sizes of text and at various scales, display very rough on the screen. (My comparison is the retina display of my MBP and a Thunderbolt…so those two displays are my expectations.) I'm using the same MBP for both a Thunderbolt display (at work) and this ASUS at my home office.
On the ASUS it's not as noticeable when the text is on white backgrounds, but I'm a graphic designer and compose images with text all day everyday. Not to mention the specs on this ASUS PA279Q indicate it's built for the professional so I would expect better text rendering. I haven't even addressed color calibration and balance yet, because that won't matter to me if the text won't display any better than it is now.
I was so hopeful after researching all the specs on this monitor it would be a viable alternative to the glossy display of the Thunderbolt display. (Which, I do love the Thunderbolt display for it's clarity and how it displays crisp, clean text at all sizes. (This ASUS actually displays text decently if I increase the text so each letter is about 4" high. Which is pointless for practical purposes -- that'd be like doing page layout through a microscope!)
I kept holding off on getting a monitor for the home office thinking the Thunderbolt would be updated soon. I'd be sick if I dropped a grand on piece of 2011 technology only to learn a few days later an updated Thunderbolt display hit the market! Not to mention, I'm praying Apple comes out with a less reflective Thunderbolt display. The glare and reflection is the main reason I looked elsewhere for a large monitor; hence my asking for help. Hoping the ASUS text display issue can be worked out. My expectation is for it to display like the MBP retina and Thunderbolt display text. That possible?
Alternatively, I guess I could do the Apple Refurb Thunderbolt at $799. And see if there's a decent aftermarket anti-glare I could stick on it?

ASUS PA279QI uninstalled those two items. It still runs slow on start-up and when opening safari, firefox, iphoto, itunes, etc. It's not snappy like it used to be. Any other ideas? Thanks.

Hi Folks,
I have a intel imac running snow leopard (10.6.8) and have a problem I can't seem to solve, and Applecare is having trouble also.
I am trying to do a time machine backup from scratch. I had a previous well-functioning TM backup, but it was trying to do what I thought was an inappropriately large backup and I decided to start afresh. So I went to my external firewire drive and trashed the backup folder. I then re-selected the drive as the backup disc for TM and started over. The backup always stops at 16.13g of a 350+ g backup. There are no error messages...it just sticks there and says "backing up".
To solve this I have tried reformatting the drive in several different paradigms (GUID, Journaled, Nonjournaled, case-sensitive, etc). I even bought a new external drive thinking that might have the problem....it still sticks at the same place. I have also trashed the TM preference files....no difference. Repaired permissions....no change. I even did a archive and reinstall of the OS with preserved user settings.....still gets stuck at the same place.
Does anyone know anything else I could try short of doing a complete re-install of the OS with erasure of all my settings?.... I would really like to avoid that if at all possible.

Since you get the same results with 2 different backup drives, it sure sounds like something amiss on the internal's directory structure, but Disk Utility should have found that.
About all I can think of is to try to exclude whatever's causing the problem from being backed-up. If we can manage to do that, then you can try to fix or replace the culprit.
Backups are done alphabetically, starting with your Applications folder, then Library, private (hidden), System, and Users (there are a few other, very small, hidden system folders, too).
So . . . we need to figure out where 16.1 GB's falls in that sequence. See how large each of those folders is, via the Finder or Get Info. Do this as an Admin user, but even so, there are some files and folders you're not authorized to, so the numbers won't be exact.
To see the private folder, you'll need to have the Finder show invisible items; there's a Terminal command for that, but it's probably just as easy to use the TinkerTool app, per #A3 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Then open a Finder window to your internal HD. You'll see all the hidden and visible folders, in the order Time Machine backs them up. (Several of the hidden ones are excluded, so you needn't worry about them.)
Once you have a guesstimate of where the backup gets to 16 GBs, exclude the appropriate folder from backups, via Time Machine Preferences > Options. Then try another backup.
If you can get a good backup that way, then you can narrow it down by removing the large folder exclusion and excluding sub-folders, etc.
