Force a monitor resolution

Right now I am trying to display a resolution on a monitor that is not displaying correctly. So far I am able to allow it with randr and then set it, but thats only temporary. Here is my xorg.conf so far
Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel 945G "
Driver "intel"
# Using the name of the output defined by the video driver plus the identifier of a
# monitor section, one associates a monitor section with an output by adding an
# option to the Device section in the following format:
# Option "Monitor-outputname" "monitor ID"
Option "monitor-VGA1" "External"
Option "monitor-LVDS1" "Internal"
#Option "monitor-TMDS-1" "dvi"
EndSection
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "External"
# Modeline "1280x1024" 60
# specifies a mode to be marked as the preferred initial mode of the monitor
Option "PreferredMode" "1280x1024"
# This optional entry specifies the position of the monitor within the X screen.
#Option "Position" "1024 0"
#This optional entry specifies that the monitor should be ignored
# entirely, and not reported through RandR. This is useful if the
# hardware reports the presence of outputs that do not exist.
#Option "Ignore" "true"
EndSection
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Internal"
#Options LeftOf, RightOf, Above, Below specify monitors' relative position
Option "RightOf" "External"
# This optional entry specifies whether the monitor should be
# turned on at startup. By default, the server will attempt to
# enable all connected monitors.
#Option "Enable" "true"
#This optional entry specifies the initial rotation of the given monitor.
# Valid values for rotation are "normal", "left", "right", and "inverted".
# Option "Rotate" "left"
EndSection
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "Intel Corporation 945G Integrated Graphics Controller"
Monitor "Internal"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1680x1050" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "640x480"
EndSubSection
EndSection
I really want to force a 1280x1024 resolution on VGA1. How would I go about this?

Leviathan1 wrote:The traditional way to do it, without xrandr is the change the Modes line in the display section of section screen.
Just comment out the old entry and change it to just:
Modes "1280x1024"
That's what IIRC
Option "PreferredMode" "1280x1024"
should do. But it seems it doesn't.
I'm not using xorg.conf anymore - maybe try running xorg w/o one too.

  • Dynadock WUXGA monitor resolution

I have a SAMSUNG 730U3E laptop connected to the Toshiba Dynadock U3.0 and have several hardware items connected to the dynadock like network cable, wireless mouse and keayboard and BenQ 24" WUXGA monitor.
I haven't updated my drivers since January 2014 which means i was on the v7.4.51587.0 (aka v7.5 M0) before i went to ugrade to the latest drivers. When i upgraded to the latest avaliable driver v7.7.59540.0 (aka v7.7M3) i noticed my monitor is forced into HD1080 resolution instead of the WUXGA. What's more, i didn't notice any WUXGA resolution avaliable for the monitor in either Windows 8.1 (64 bit) Control Panel options nor in the dynadock U3.0 options menu.
I've tried with various (not all) v7.7 and v7.6 drivers. Every one i've tried missed the WUXGA resolution. Did the dynadock drop support for the WUXGA resolution?
Is there any way how to force the WUXGA resoultion on the new dynadock drivers?
I've currently reverted back to the v7.4 drivers which are mostly stable (with minor issues when i unplug my laptop from the dynadock which usually requires a restart to fix the resolution issue when i plug it back to the dock).

    Hi, James -
Re the monitor resolution, try throwing away the files Display Preferences and Monitor Preferences (the latter is in a folder by the same name). Then restart, and redo any settings necessary in the Monitors control panel.
Make sure the correct profile is selected for your monitor. That selection is made in the Monitors control panel, by clicking the Color button.
Re the sleep function, what is the exact message given?
Are you using the automatic sleep functions in the Energy Saver control panel? Or, are you using the Sleep item in the Special menu or the Control Strip?

  • Wrong VGA monitor resolution set on desktop

How can I change the monitor resolution before start commences. The resolution that the desk top is set for will not display on my monitor and therefore I can not reset it. I need to interrupt startup to reset the monitor resolution before it sets up the desk top. How can I do this?

You can boot into safe mode (hold down Shift key during bootup until you see the spinning gear) which will force a generic, low resolution (SVGA I think) which should work with most any monitor. However, I don't know if you can alter resolutions from safe mode and have them stick during a normal boot. Good luck.

  • Crash switching monitor resolutions / no crash report

I have a Mac Mini which runs 10.4.11 connected to my Onkyo A/V receiver using a DVI->HDMI adapter cable. I frequently also connect to the Mini from my laptop using Apple's Screen Sharing utility (1.0.1). This kinda-sorta works, but I experience frequent crashes where the Mini reboots itself due to monitor resolution switching. Typically it goes like this:
    - connected with Screen Sharing - everything is fine, although 1024x768 seems to be the highest resolution I can get
    - turn on A/V receiver and resolution switches -- attempts to switch monitor to 1280x720 (which is what I want) and often the Mini crashes/reboots... or sometimes AppleVLC crashes
Rebooting at this point, with the receiver on usually causes the Mini to have a 1280x720 resolution after the reboot, but there is no crash report for the incident.
    So my questions are:
    1. Is there some way to force the Mini to think it's always talking to a 1280x720 display, even when the only "display" is via Share Screen? (I mean, this is the best resolution for interacting with the Mini from my laptop anyway.)
    2. Is there some display driver upgrade that can be done to prevent the crash.
    3. Is there some way to make sure that crashes get logged properly and sent to Apple? (If VLC crashes, then a crash report does get sent, but if the Mini itself crashes, I get nothing.)
    Thx,

P.S. I just switched my receiver to a different input (audio only, and shut off my projector), and the Mini crashed in this situation too!
My receiver is an Onkyo PR-SC885 (basically equivalent to Integra DTC-9.8), connected to a Panasonic PT-AE2000U projector (since my primary display is a projector, I hope you can see why the VLC access is essential).

  • My Mac mini no longer detects my monitor resolution

My Mac Mini has stopped being able to detect the resolution of my monitor, which is a 1680x1050 Acer widescreen.  1680x1050 is also no longer a choice of resolutions under 'Displays' in 'System Preferences' so I cannot select my monitor resolution manually.  I suspect that there is a bug somewhere in a recent update which has broken support for my monitor.  Is there an official channel by which I can report this bug?  Has it been reported already?  Is there an ETA on a fix?  This renders my Mac more or less unusable.

It's unlikely that the upgrades had anything to do with the problem, slim superdrives are just not all that reliable.
You might try a few tricks before taking it in for service or springing for a Mac compatable external DVD drive.
    1. Reset the SMC > Resetting the System Management Controller
    2. Reset the PRAM > Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    3. Clean it, for example with a > Memorex OptiDisc CD/DVD Laser Lens Cleaner

  • Est. external monitor resolution

I am trying to set up a samsung syncmaster 191Tplus as an external monitor on my macbook from early 2008 running 10.6.8. When I plug it in, both screens flash (not just a flicker) as shown in this youtube video posted by someone else, but my problem is the same
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-Yz-Em2GU4.
I am using the mini-DVI to VGA adaptor. The resolution of the samsung is 1280x1024, which is not listed in my choice of display resolutions. Is this the cause? What can I do? I can't access settings to change anything after the monitor is connected, and I can't find settings for the external monitor before it is connected. Would using SwitchResX work to create a monitor resolution preset before plugging in the second monitor?

OK, here is something to try. Go into System Preferences and select Displays. In the window that opens will be a checkbox for "Show displays in menu bar." Put a checkmark there and make it active. There should now be a little icon of an Apple display on the right side of the menu bar at the top of the screen. If you click on it, it will drop down and give you a short cut to different resolutions. There should be a checkmark next to the currently active resolution. Is it set to 1440 x 900? If not, set it there.
If you are still getting that message from the monitor, well, I don't think the Mac is lying about sending 1440 x 900. If the screen doesn't look right to you, try using the Auto Adjustment feature on your Viewsonic monitor. It could just be that the image needs adjusting.

  • Mac mini monitor resolution

    Hello,
I bought my mac mini today ( 2.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 - Intel Iris Graphics - OS X Yosemite ) I connected using the DisplayPort DVI cable to my Viewsonic vx992 monitor. I have been using this monitor for my Windows XP which used to give me 1280x1024 resolution.
When I connect the new Mac to my screen is work but I with poor monitor resolution .. It's 1280x1024 but poor not clear
I'v been used this monitor with Windows with the same resolution and the monitor resolution was excellent with Windows.
I connected the Mac with Samsung Smart TV via HD cable .. The monitor resolution is excellent
This is the converter that I used:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007KB0EGC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF 8&psc=1
Now, I'm conflict .. Is the problem with the convert that I'v been used or from the monitor ??

    Hi IIIaass
I don't know if the screenshot will showing you the noise that I talk about ,, there is a little noise in the text for example .. I work for while on my monitor and I know the resolution quality and the clarity that should be,, and I don't want to buy new monitor then I discovered that the problem was from the Adapter.
Thanks again .. and please tell me what's the best HDMI converter to DVI if you know about it.

But I am getting this alert from SCOM and SCOM has no information about the alert for me to find out what to do - thought that was the point of SCOM to let you know of problems and how to resolve them. :)
The alert is coming from the Error Count Monitor that is part of the Hyper-V Management Pack Extensions (v 4.0.0.0)
I have tried looking in the Event Logs on the Host and there doesn't seem to be any storage related errors there. I am trying to establish if this is a false positive, why it is happening and if it is safe to override and ignore.
There is nothing on the Product Knowledge tab and nothing on the Alert Context other than what I have already mentioned (see below).

  • Changing monitor resolution with proper aspect ratio

My project size is 800x600 and I wanted to provide an option to the user to change their monitor resolution at 800x600 by clicking on button. I have also planned to do it by using buddy api xtra, and already tested it. The problem is, when I am doing this on a PC with panoramic monitor (native resolution 1920x1080), it got stretched. I know it's very natural (as the aspect ratio has changed ) and I can get it in shape by squeeze the width using 'draw.rect'.
I noticed, there are some PCs with advanced display card that don't even get stretched, but shows the 800x600 resolution in proper aspect ratio by keeping the extra space black both sides. And I don't need to write any further codes (squeeze the width using 'draw.rect') to keep it in shape.
The real problem starts here, I can't able to filter the above situations by any logical means. I wanted to write codes only for the PCs that get stretched, but I didn't able to find any support from Director to determine which type of display card has been attached. I need to know whether it will get stretched, or the display card can able to manage the aspect ratio.
Any one have any solution in this matter?
Please don't hesitate to ask if you need any more info.

    Hello handler
If you talking about this kind of thing...
    https://forums.adobe.com/message/5773207
    search for.....  _movie.stage.drawRect = _system.deskTopRectList[1]    &    _movie.stage.rect = _system.deskTopRectList[1]
You don't need an xtra to change the resolutions - but you do have to work a few things - I tend to use flash text because it scales better.

  • Secondary Monitor Resolution Dropped with Mavericks

After installing Mavericks (should have waited) my second monitor resolution has suddently dropped. It still claims to be 1080p but it is clearly not the same resolution as it was before and has been reduced.
    So annoying.
    Any ideas?

    Hi there,
the same for me too. I'm using an external monitor from NEC with a native resulition of 1920 x 1200.
The monitor is connected to a mac mini server from mid 2011 via HDMI.
In OSX 10.8 the OS automatically selected 1080p as the best resolution which was not correct but I could choose it manually from the list of scaled solutions.
In Mavericks the native solution of 1920 x 1200 has gone from the list. Only 1080p and 1080i are listed.
    This is very annoying.
    But:
If I activate my apple tv as a second screen (new feature in Mavericks) all resolutions that disappeared with Mavericks are here again and working fine including 1920 x 1200. As soon as I disable the second screen feature the resolutions fade away...
I just downloaded a command line tool for switching the resolution manually. This works until the machine is rebooted...
    Any tips / hints?

  • Help to reset monitor resolution?

    Greetings,
I have a G5 Quad with an Ati x1900 graphics card running into a 52" Samsung LCD. This was working fine through a dvi-vga adaptor until I switched the monitor resolution from 1920X1080 to 1360X768 which is not supported by the monitor .....blank screen. I plugged another 19" monitor into the other output on the card and both work fine but as soon as I remove the 19" the 52" reverts back to the unsupported mode.
I have reset the pram and tried booting in safe mode but that did not help me.
From bootup the 52" works fine until just before the login screen, then it switches resolution......blank screen.
Would anyone know where these settings would be housed in OS 10.5.1 so I can modify (delete) them?
Any ideas would be much appreciated
    Thanks
    Gareth

Thanks so much for your help.
Not wishing to play around in single user mode, I opted to delete the files /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist
    /Users/username/Library/Preferences/ByHost/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.xx xx.plist
using my PowerBook over the Firewire with the G5 in target disc mode.
    This worked a treat
    Thanks again

  • Win8.1-TV Monitor resolution need 1360x768 only allow 1280x720 & 1920x1080! Works fine in Win7!

    Win8.1-TV Monitor resolution, need 1360x768 only allow 1280x720 & 1920x1080! Works fine in Win7!
I replace my win7 pc with a win8.1 pc. the TV monitor I was using with Win7 worked fine with 1360x768 resolution, however I don't have that choice with the Win8.1. I tried for months now with default & custom settings. I think is that Win8.1 sees the
display as Funai TV (Sylvania) where as Win7 as the Intel video display driver.
Some suggest edit the monitor.ini, not sure if that will work!
    Any help is appreciated!

    Hi, ecscomp,
Based on my research, the resolution of second monitor should be managed by PC's graphic card driver, not Windows. That's to say, if the graphic card driver doesn't had a correspond setting to change display resolution settings, I'm afraid we have no way
to change the resolution to 1366x768.
    Thanks for your understanding.
