Force Quit not working in 10.4.4

Since upgrading to 10.4.4 last week I have had problems with applications hanging (a few times a day). When this happens force quit never works. I can still go to other applications and save and quit, but I have to use the reset button to get out of the hung application. This problem just started with 10.4.4, and the frequency of applications hanging has increased dramatically.
Unfortunately, I did not back up 10.4.3, and I do not know how to get back to it.
suggestions?

More than likely after all the forced quits you have done and the forced shutdowns and restarts you have a damaged disk directory. I would start by booting of your 10.4 CD and running disk Utility and see what it finds. IN fact you may want to do all three of the steps listed here:
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/repairprocess.html
Have you checked to make sure that you are running the latest compatible version of the applications in question?
Force quit sometimes can take a while to work. I have waited for apps for as long as 3-4 minutes before they finally quit. That is a rare event but it has happened. Microsoft Word and Safari are by far the slowest apps to force quit in my experience.
You really should not, but on rare occasions, ever have to force quit an application. IF you are doing it as often as you are chances are that something else is going on to cause it.

  • Force Quit not working

Some times when an application stops responding force quitting it doesn't work - the windows of that application disappear, but it still appears in the dock with the arrow of a running app under it, and next time I open the force quit window it appears again in the list.
Also tried killing the process in activity monitor and from the terminal, to no avail.
Furthermore a restart doesn't work: it hangs as it tries to shut down and the only course of action is to do a 'hard shut down', holding the power button in until it turns off.
Most often happens with iTunes, but also has happened to DVD Player, Mail, EyeTV and possibly more.
iTunes does it fairly regularly, others have only done it once or twice. Get the spinning beach ball, often when resuming play after a period of inactivity, and the program remains unresponsive. Has been happening for a while now, despite a couple of updates to iTunes.
Anyone got an idea what's wrong and/or how to fix it? It's most un-Mac like...

This behavior is typically indicative of system corruption. I would consider doing the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Force quit not working on frozen applications in Lion

Since I updated to Lion on my 2011 Macbook pro I have applications tend to freeze up and force quit does not always work. Any Suggestions?

Yeah, have a look at your activity monitor to see what's hogging your CPU.
Shortcut to force quit is Command + Option + Esc.
Update all your apps / extensions to Lion compatible versions.
Especially Parallels / MacFuse / NTFS Drivers etc

  • Force Quit not working & System will not go to sleep

Under the Apple Tab, system will not go into sleep when clicked.
Also, Mail, Safari and other programs are freezing up and Force Quit will not function.
Message was edited by: Max with a Mac

This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
First, read things in Apple doc.#25801 on sleep settings.
Here is Apple doc.#303698 with their tips.
    Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.
If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
    Hope this helps!
    P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB cards.
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
    Cheers! DALE

  • Forced quit not working as setup application cancels shut down

I upgraded to OS X and setup froze when I was setting up cloud storage.  When I try to force quit, the setup application automatically cancels shut down.  Tried Command q to try to quit setup, but no success. Waiting for battery to die, but is there another way? Help!

Finally was able to bring up the task minder and force quit.  Command-option-escape or some variation of escape-control-command-option.

Hi my trackpad is frozen and I also could not get force quit to work, I closed the top down and now I cannot get past the login and the cursor will not move, does anyone have any ideas

    Try these two steps:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM

  • How can I get the shortcut for forced quite to work from my keyboard.

The shortcut for forced quite stopped working from my apple keyboard.  Is there any way I can reprogram it or do I need a new keyboard? When I use a logiteck keyboard the shortcut works.  the esc key, command key, and option key work it just doesn't work as the short cut.  Any help would be great, I don't want to buy a new keyboard.
We did just have the video card replaced, not sure if that would effect anything.
    Thanks

The Apple keyboard has two Command and two Option keys. Did you try them all and in every different combination possible to rule out a defective key. You could also go Fullscreen and use Escape to exit Fullscreen to rule that one out. It reads like the keyboard is on its way out if the Logitech keyboard works. Also that would indicates that it's not a problem on the OS side. Hope that helps

  • Beachball again and again, force quit doesnt work

    Hi there,
since this rubbish mountain cat (OS X 10.8.2) is on my Macbook Pro 13" mid 2009 Model (2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3) i got to shutdown/reboot it by the power button several times a week.
I get the beachball spinning over and over mostly in safari but also in itunes and other applications, then i am waiting for up to ten minutes each until i decide to just hold the power button for a forced shutdown.
Before Mountain Lion, everything was fine, never got any issues at all with two macbooks i own since Mac OS Tiger.
I used Disk Utility and Onyx to check the harddisk, did check and repair the Disk Permissions several times, alway sucessfully.
I deleted the two ".plist" which were mentioned in another post here and in other forums.
I dont and never did use 1Password.
Today i had the issue that i clicked to play a preview of a movie in the iTunes store, beachball came up, keystroke "command+alt/option+esc" for force quit didnt work, going to the force quit menu by clicking on the apple in the upper left corner did neither work as nothing in the list by clicking on the apple responded.
Then i tried to open terminal by invoking launchbar which also got frozen, after that i tried to open finder to get access to the terminal, but eventually the finder also got frozen. Six minutes later, beachball still spinning i had to hit the power button yet again.
Does someone has a clue how i could fix this behaviour?

    @srourslaw
When i get the beachball then i cant close the application.
Just now, using safari, on a link and the beachball came up for no reason.
Alt/option+command+esc doesnt open the force quit menu.
First i could click the apple symbol, however when clicking there on "force quit"
nothing happened, no force quit menu showed up.
After all i wanted to quit the text app which was open, when i clicked on the text
application icon in the dock, it didnt react.
When i finally just tried to open the mail application from the dock, even the dock and
everything else got frozen and the fan of my macbook starts spinning really loud.
Now all i can do is moving the spinning beachball around the screen, everything else is frozen.
Only option left is shutting down the macbook by pressing the power button for 5 seconds :(

  • External Hard Drive Causing Force quit not to work

I have 2 Lacie 500 gig FW 800 external drives daisy chained to my imac. I use one for Time Machine and one for weekly backups. After upgrading to 10.5.3 I noticed applications were freezing and I could not force quit. Today Microsoft Word froze and I noticed when I went to force quit, (holding the mouse button down on the icon to get menu) that one of my drives spun up. I disconnected the FW800 cable from my Mac and the application unfroze. Help are my drive incompatible now in 10.5.3? Is something wrong with one of my drives?

Try running repair permissions in Disk Utility on your hard drives.

  • The Force Quit-Not Responding Issue has not been resolved yet?

I too keep having Force Quit issues in many apps - Final Cut, Photoshop, Mail, etc. If I do not use these apps for a while then go to them, they hang. Force quit does not work - as the app cannot be restarted after force quitting. The only solution is to reboot - you cannot even restart as nothing will force quit the apps. This has now become annoying as I am rebooting at least once or twice per day.
This occurred only recently - after the 10.5.4 update.
Checking the boards, this is a problem for many many users and still not resolved in most cases. Anyone have more information on this issue?

    Hello Jon:
As far as I can tell, there is not a general problem. That is not to say you are not having problems.
If you have not done so, try these things (in sequence, if one fixes it, stop):
    Run permission repair.
Run repair disk from your software install DVD.
Download the combo 10.5.4 updater and apply it (even if you did that before).

  • FOrce Quit not forcing quit

The optioncommandESC force quit command isn't bringing up the force quit menu. I have to right click the dock icon in order to force quit an application. Now, a few months back, my SHIFT key on the left side stopped working, and it eventually popped off (me trying to figure out what was wrong). I thought maybe the OPTION key or the COMMAND key were inoperable as well, but that's not so because I can do this : œåΩ√ˆ∆, etc and the COMMAND key works for other functions that need it.
    Any ideas?

Well does the force quit window come up from using the apple menu force quit option?
I am asking to make sure the issue isn't the you can't get to the force quit menu al all.

  • MacBook Pro is freezing-- force quit not responding

My late 2008 model macbook pro running Yosemite 10.10.1 with 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 memory has started freezing about every 10 minutes. The entire computer freezes up, including the clock and the spinner, and force quit isn't responsive. When I reboot everything works like normal, but after about 10-15 minutes of use, the computer freezes again and the process repeats. At first I thought it was photoshop, but It doesn't seem to matter what app is open or how big or small the task it's trying to accomplish is. It has always run a bit slow on Yosemite, but this all started suddenly last night with no warning.
