Force the use of synonym (database link)

Hello,
I'm on a database DB_1 with the user NP.
In the NP schema I have a table TEST_TABLE.
I create a public synonym on TEST_TABLE referencing a table named TEST_TABLE in a database DB_2 (*the synonym use a dblink*).
In my DB_1 instance connected with NP user, when I run "SELECT * FROM TEST_TABLE", the result is the content of TEST_TABLE in DB_1.
Connected with NP user on DB1_instance, how can i force the use of the synonym to get the content of TEST_TABLE in DB_2 instance ? Is it possible ?
Thanks...

Pl post details of OS and database versions.
I do not believe you can achieve your requirement, unless you name the synonym something other than "TEST_TABLE". The resolution to "TEST_TABLE" will always result in the local table first - the synonym will not be included in the name resolution.

    Dont give me this answer.
    ORA-16196: database has been previously opened and closed
    Cause: The instance has already opened and closed the database, which is allowed only once in its lifetime.
    Action: Shut down the instance.

    If you read the documentation you will see that there is no ALTER DATABASE CLOSE command.
    This is an undocumented Oracle command, which we are not supposed to use. Consequently we are not allowed to complain about the way that it works. Instead we're supposed to use SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE.

  • What is the Use of  "Alter database activate standby database"

    Hi ,
    I appreciate your time.
    I just wanted to know what is the use of "Alter database activate standby database" command when doing the failover. How different it will act in failover process. Can we use this command in SwitchOver.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Uwe Hesse,
    Wonderfull... good info....
    So my understanding is that the use of "ACTIVATE PHYSICAL STANDBY DATABASE" is conditional and depends on the redo log gap and the Database status(Able to mount or not).
    Condition 1: If the Db is in Mount state and Redo log gap is successfully filled.
    1) Flush any unsent redo from the primary database to the target standby database.
    SQL> ALTER SYSTEM FLUSH REDO TO target_db_name;
    Note: If the above Statement Completes successfully without any errors.
    2) Stop Redo Apply.
    SQL> ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE CANCEL;
    3) Finish applying all received redo data.
    SQL> ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE FINISH;
    4) Verify that the target standby database is ready to become a primary database.
    SQL> SELECT SWITCHOVER_STATUS FROM V$DATABASE;
    5) Switch the physical standby database to the primary role.
    SQL> ALTER DATABASE COMMIT TO SWITCHOVER TO PRIMARY WITH SESSION SHUTDOWN;
    Condition 2: If the DB is not able Mount and Redo Gap can't be filled.
    Important Note: If the the above command in STEP3 gives error, some received redo data was not applied. Try to resolve the cause of the error and re-issue the statement before proceeding.
    If the error condition cannot be resolved, a failover can still be performed (with some data loss) by issuing the following SQL statement on the target standby database:
    SQL> ALTER DATABASE ACTIVATE PHYSICAL STANDBY DATABASE;
    Thanks in advance.

    I have Vista and Firefox 3.6.15
    when I open an email attachment it goes to the intended application but when I click on the downloaded file in Downloads it invokes OpenOffice and then it displays:
    "Move background page assignment

    How can I force the use on a specific application when I am in the Downloads window?

    Hi Frank!
    you should catch your save-event and after saving put the following line:
    oMatrix.Columns.Item(4).Cells.Item(lstRowIndex + 1).Click(SAPbouiCOM.BoCellClickType.ct_Regular);
    that's it!

  • How to use a Global database link

    i try to create a global database link through two databases MZFB et MZF14952.
    the MZFB database is installed under the machine MZFXPDESK
    the MZF14952 database is installed under another machine SUPPORT1
    i execute this code
    CREATE DATABASE LINK dbl_14952_5
    CONNECT TO BELGA_5
    IDENTIFIED BY mypwd
    USING 'MZFB'
    select * from dba_db_links
    OWNER      DB_LINK      USERNAME      HOST      CREATED
    MZF14952     DBL_14952_5.CORP.MYCOMPANY.COM     BELGA_5          MZFB                    02/14/2007 14:17:21:000
    select * from global_name
    DBL_14952_1.CORP.MYCOMPANY.COM
    select * from [email protected]
    => ORA-02019: connection description for remote database not found

    zafadm,
    as Leonardo pointed out you should refer to the db link by it's name - '@dbl_14952_5'. The USING clause expects a full address or an alias that refer's to your tnsnames.ora file on the local server (SUPPORT1) where an entry would exist with that alias. You can bypass the tnsnames.ora file by supplying the full address in your create database link statement, ie;
    create database link dbl_14952_5
    connect to  BELGA_5
    identified by "password"
    using '(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=host_ip)(PORT=1521)))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=MZFB)))';Update the statement with the ip of the remote (MZFXPDESK) server.

  • What is the use of Offline Database Object in SOA

    Hi All,
    Can anyone let me know the purpose of Offline Database Object in SOA.
    1) When we will create the Offline Database Object in soa ?
    2) How do we connect this object to any data base schema ?
    Note:- Please provide me the example on this
    Thanks,

    Hi Dominik,
            Thanks for the repy !!!!
    Now, as you said we can access a (deep) node of the whole model using an access object.
    Let us consider the component set ONEORDER. As seen we can use the following path to reach BTDocFlowAll using search object :-
    BTQuery1O -> BTOrder  -> BTOrderHeader  -> BTHeaderDocFlowSet -> BTDocFlowSet -> BTDocFlowAll ....
    Also, to reach BTDocFlowAll we can even use the access object as follows :-
    BTAdminI -> BTItemDocFlowSet  -> BTDocFlowAll....
    Now my question is :-
    Normally we use the class cl_crm_bol_query_service to fire a search based on a search object. Can we use the same class to fire a search based on access object ?
    (actually I currently dont have a CRM system so I could not try it out myself).
    If not, then how do we fire a query using an access object ?
    Regards,
    Ashish

  • Using a dummy where-clause to force the use of an index

    I notice that an index only gets used when I use the index key in the where clause. Should I use a dummy where clause to force the index to be used?
    SQL> create table emp (
    2 empno NUMBER(5),
    3 empname VARCHAR2(15) );
    Table created.
    SQL> create index idx_emp_no on emp (empno);
    Index created.
    SQL> insert into emp (empno, empname) values (1, 'Peter');
    1 row created.
    SQL> set autotrace traceonly;
    SQL> select empno from emp;
    Execution Plan
    Plan hash value: 3956160932
    | Id | Operation | Name | Rows | Bytes | Cost (%CPU)| Time |
    | 0 | SELECT STATEMENT | | 1 | 13 | 3 (0)| 00:00:01 |
    | 1 | TABLE ACCESS FULL| EMP | 1 | 13 | 3 (0)| 00:00:01 |
    SQL> select empno from emp where empno > 0;
    Execution Plan
    Plan hash value: 434430053
    | Id | Operation | Name | Rows | Bytes | Cost (%CPU)| Time |
    | 0 | SELECT STATEMENT | | 1 | 13 | 1 (0)| 00:00:01 |
    |* 1 | INDEX RANGE SCAN| IDX_EMP_NO | 1 | 13 | 1 (0)| 00:00:01 |
    As you can see, using a dummy where clause (empno > 0), I manage to reduce the cost from 3 to 1.

    Again. Be careful with comparisons. But I like the discussion. It is usefull to carefully look at what happens "behind the scenes" and find a sensible explaination for that.
    Your new scenario now is different. By selecting one specific row instead of selection all you already made an assumption. That only one or few of the rows are returned. Andre's statement still is correct. Now the CBO will prefere the index scan.
    The CBO now has to decide between two options.
    Option a) use the index.
    This means =>
    Step 1: Access the index to find the value
    Step 2: Access the table using the rowid that was found in the index leaf entry.
    Option b) scan the full table
    This means =>
    Step 1: Iterate over all rows of the table
    Step 2: Apply a filter condition (empno = :x)
    We can see this execution plan by adding a hint to the query.
    select /*+ FULL(emp) */ * from emp where empno = 1;This hint will force the CBO to access the table emp using a full table scan.
    The cost in my environment for option B is 3.
    Option A has a cost with 2. Therefore the CBO prefers Option A.
    However this can easily change.
    Consider the following
    begin
      for i in 1..1000 loop
        insert into emp (empno, empname) values (1, 'Employee');
      end loop;
    end;
    commit;
    execute dbms_stats.gather_table_stats(user,'EMP');The run the select again.
    SQL> set autotrace traceonly
    SQL> select * from emp where empno = 1;
    1001 Zeilen ausgewõhlt.
    Ausf³hrungsplan

    |*  1 |  TABLE ACCESS FULL| EMP  |  1001 | 12012 |     3   (0)| 00:00:01 |
    Predicate Information (identified by operation id):

              0  db block gets
             74  consistent gets
              0  physical reads
              0  redo size

              0  sorts (memory)
              0  sorts (disk)
           1001  rows processedThe CBO now prefers the full table scan and not the index access.
    If we force it to use an index then the cost increases.

  • Forcing the use of a currently-running JVM

    Hi there.
    I am writing a Java application. Now, due to the (relatively) slow startup times of Java apps, I would like to enable my app to startup when the user's OS loads, but in the background (i.e. no GUI). Then, when the user double-clicks the icon to actually run my app, the background instance becomes visible and the user doesn't need to wait.
    My problem is that when the user double-clicks to run my app, a new JVM instance is started... which can't access the state info, threads etc. held in the JVM that contains my hidden app. I need a way to force my shortcut to use the currently-running JVM.
    I think this will require some dipping into native code to access the already-running JVM process, but I'd prefer not to do that. So, can anyone help me out here?
    (The above is a bit incoherent, I know. If it's not clear then please ask and I will try to clarify.)

    It's going to either:
    1. Require native code
    2. Require that you launch another JVM, at least temporarily
    Either way, you can have your Java app listen on a pre-determined port number, and your native (or Java app), when launched, attempts to send a special message to that port. When received, the application can show itself.
    If you want the double click to be on the exact same icon, then you are going to have to do #2, which means that you are going to be loading a new JVM - at least temporarily. If the time you are worried about is how long it takes the JVM to start, then that's not going to work. If the startup time is long because of things that your app is doing, then it will work.

    What is the name of the DB Link and the name of the object you are selecting
    from?
    I find it easier to create a view on the remote object then use that in selects.
    e.g,
    Link Name = MyLink
    Object_name = Addr_Loc
    create or replace VIEW Rem_Addr_Loc AS
    select * from addr_loc@mylink;
    In the code I then use the view
    begin
      for C_Rec in (select * from Rem_Addr_loc)
      loop
         dbms_output.put_line('Rec: '|| C_Rec.Col1);
      end loop;
    end;

  • Using database link in my triggers,urgent

    There's DB A on ServerA,DB B on ServerB.Table TA in ServerA's DB and TB on ServerB's DB.My purpose is to synchronize usera.TA with userb.TB real time.
    In order to realize it,I created dblink AtoB from A to B using command "create database link AtoB.domain connect to userb identified by userb using 'BTNSname';",it's no problem for I have test on it :select count(*) from [email protected];It's ok to get the result.
    But when I create trigger on table TA by using the dblink AtoB.domain to update,delete and insert datas to TB,the error "PLS-00201: identifier '[email protected]' must be declared" occurs while compiling.
    The oracle version on the two servers is 8.1.7.
    It happens on the production envrionment,but in our lab,there's no problem.The difference between them is that it is cluster structure in production one.
    I tried several times,but failed,just wondered if some privilege was not right?But I can do selection from this dblink,only in trigger there's compilation errors.
    Really hope that someone could give light on it.
    Thank you in advance!
    In addition,I did some modification in my triggers to have a try.
    I created a synonym for the remote table,and the trigger then updates the synonym instead of the remote table [email protected] .But also failed.
    The same error,saying the synonym is not declared.
    Any good way to realize the same thing?

    Thank you for your answering first.
    I don't use replication because the destination table's structure is not exactly the same as the source one.
    --The selection was done in the production,connection to the source schema,then select through the dblink from the source to the dest schema,the trigger is created in source schema on source table to handle datas in destination schema's table.In lab,all is ok,no such a problem.
    --I created two dblinks,one is connect to source as system user,created a public dblink "create public database link AtoB.domain using 'BTNSname';";the other is connect as UserA,"create database link AtoB.domain connect to UserB identified by UserB using 'BTNSname';".

  • Using database link via dbms_scheduler

    Hello out there,
    I have a problem calling a stored procedure via dbms_scheduler that pulls some rows over a public database link.
    The setup is the following:
    create public database link mediabase using 'mediabase';
    create or replace procedure hole_kurse as
    mdatum date;
    begin
       select max(datum) into mdatum
       from dt_wechselkurs;
       insert into dt_wechselkurs l
          (waehrung,
           datum,
           wechselkurs)
       (select
           r.waehrung,
           r.datum,
           r.wechselkurs
        from
           dt_wechselkurs@mediabase r
        where
           datum>mdatum);
        commit;
    end hole_kurse;
    begin
       dbms_scheduler.create_job(job_name          =>  'wechselkurse',
                                 job_type          =>  'STORED_PROCEDURE',
                                 job_action        =>  'hole_kurse',
                                 start_date        =>  sysdate,
                                 repeat_interval   =>  'FREQ=DAILY; BYHOUR=7; BYMINUTE=0; BYSECOND=0');
       dbms_scheduler.enable(name => 'wechselkurse');
       commit;
    end;
    /I can access the database link in SQL and I can call the procedure hole_kurse from SQL without any errors. But the job fails writing "ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied" into alert.log. I also tried using dbms_job which used to work with Oracle 10g but now fails with the same error.
    My Oracle version is 11.2.0.2 64bit on Window Server 2008R2.
    So what do I have to change that my job will run?
    Many thanks in advance,
    dhalek

    I'm not completely sure, but here is a possibility:
    The [url http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e26088/statements_5005.htm#i2061505]docs have this to say:
    >
    If you specify CONNECT TO user IDENTIFIED BY password, then the database link connects with the specified user and password.
    If you specify CONNECT TO CURRENT_USER, then the database link connects with the user in effect based on the scope in which the link is used.
    If you omit both of those clauses, then the database link connects to the remote database as the locally connected user.
    >
    Your dblink is like this:
    create public database link mediabase using 'mediabase';That is the third case described, so the link connects as "the locally connected user", which in the scheduler session is probably not your user.
    You may try it with the second case described in the docs:
    create public database link mediabase CONNECT TO CURRENT_USER using 'mediabase';If I understand the docs correct, then within the procedure the dblink will use the schema that the procedure is owned by (unless the procedure is using invoker-rights, then it will be the invoking user.)
    It is just a guess, but you can try it and see ;-)

    Here is the entry from my listener.ora file:

    (I must admit to not having a full understanding of SID_NAME vs SERVICE_NAME.) I looked in dba_db_links, and my db_link is named CINDY_LINK.WORLD instead of CINDY_LINK.
    Do I have a problem in one of my files?
    I would really appreciate any help.
    Thanks.

    Well, I was facing the same problem but corrected it later on. Let me describe the solution is little detail.
    You need to check few things before creating db link.
    1) db_name and db_domain in init.ora file
    2) global_name in listener.ora file
    3) service name in tnsnames.ora file.
    It seems to me that you have not specified the db_domain in init.ora file. And in that case, you need to follow these steps.
    I am considering here that you have database A on server X and database B on server Y.
    Go to the first server (server X).
    set the global name in init.ora file by following
    Global_name=true
    db_domain=usa.com
    Start and open the database.
    connect as system user.
    (if your oracle sid is orcl then)
    svrmgr30>alter database rename global_name
    to orcl.usa.com;
    this will set the global_name as specified in init.ora file. Here, your SID is orcl and db_domain is usa.com so global_name will be orcl.usa.com.
    svrmgr30>Select * from global_name;
    You get the answer like this.
    Orcl.usa.com
    Now, go to Listener.ora file and change global_name to the new name (orcl.usa.com)
    restart the listener.
    WE WILL SEE ABOUT THE CHANGES OF TNSNAMES.ORA LITTLE LATER.
    Now, go to second server(server Y) and perform the same operation as defined above. i.e. Specify the db_name, db_domain in init.ora file, execute "alter database.." command for setting global_name and edit listener.ora file for new global name.
    Once you do all these you need to create service on server 1 to connect to server 2 and on server2 to connect to server1.
    Go to server X.
    Open tnsnames.ora file and create an entry like this.
    P =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(Host = IP address of B)(Port= 1521)))
    (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = P))
    Here, P is global name of P ( at both the places).
    Now, go to server Y.
    Open tnsnames.ora file and create an entry like this.
    Q =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(Host = IP address of A)(Port= 1521)))
    (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = Q))
    Here, Q is global name of Q ( at both the places).
    you are all set now.
    Create database link between 2 servers now.
    Say these are all your settings..
    Server X is having database A with global_name orcl.usa.com and server Y is having database B with global_name orcl2.us.com
    Now go to server X and create db link to server Y
    Create public database link orcl2.us.com using 'orcl2.us.com'
    (Note. don't miss to create a service 'orcl2.us.com' in server X's tnsnames.ora file)
    And go to server Y and create db link there.
    Create public database link orcl.usa.com using 'orcl.usa.com'
    (Note. don't miss to create a service 'orcl.usa.com' in server Y's tnsnames.ora file)
    hope this helps,
    If this doesn't work, feel free to contact me.

  • Using Database link to go from one database to another

    Hi all,
    I am trying to create a SQL-query which connects to two
    different databases.
    I have created a Database link, which points from on database to
    the other, and have supplied the database name, username and
    password.
    when I try to run following query I get error ORA:02085, MY_LINK
    is connecting to SIEBN1S.(domain).com
    SELECT COUNT(*) FROM MY_TABLE@MYLINK;
    additional info:
    2 databases are exact copies on different servers (SIEBN1S and
    N1SSIEB)
    the MY_TABLE exists in both databases and I have rights on it in
    both, I can separately connect to both databases and look into
    MY_TABLE
    I have created the database link using following statement (in
    the N1SSIEB db):
    create database link MYLINK connect to <usr> identified by <pwd>
    using 'SIEBN1S'
    any help is welcome

    You have set GLOBAL_NAMES to TRUE in your init.ora file. This
    means your database link must have the same name as the database
    you want to connect to ie SIEBN1S.(domain).com.
    alternatively you can change GLOBAL_NAMES. to test this try
    'ALTER SESSION SET GLOBAL_NAMES=FALSE'.
