Forced line

I am storing the contents of a large input textfield into a
mysql database. Problem is, when you force a line in the textfield,
and save it it works. However the next time you save it, it adds
another forced line. You save again and it will create another
forced line. Is there comething I can do to prevent this?... eg...
if when they save the text field... If I see a forced line, I can
replace it with the flash term for a forced line, and save that in
the database without the forced line but with the flash syntax for
a forced line. Then when it comes to displaying the flash again it
will read the flash syntax and display a forced line... get it????
thanks to any responders. J

yes, that can occur in text files and xml files that are
loaded.
i always use a stripWhiteSpace function when loading those
file types:

  • Deleting extra forced line breaks with Find/Change

    Ladies and Gentlemen,
I'm importing word .doc that are text-heavy and the formatting is such that there are lots of extra forced line breaks creating a blank line between paragraphs.
To avoid manually deleting the extra forced line breaks to eliminate the blank line of space between paragraphs, what are the best steps to doing this an easier way?
Any advice on clear steps to do it using the find/change option?
    Thanks in advance as always..
    JRH

Are you talking about two hard returns [Enter] in a row, or a soft and hard return [Shift + Enter] and [Enter]? A forced line break is a soft return, but most Word users would just hit the return key for an empty paragraph to get an empty line.
In either case, you can do a simple text find change, if GREP intimidates you. Use the special characters menu to enter either two "end of paragraph" or a "forced line break" and "end of paragraph" markers into the find field and a single "end of paragraph" marker into the change field.
This is included as part of the "Find/change by list" sample script which adds some other common cleanup functions like converting two spaces to one. The advantage to using GREP is it will find any number of consecutive paragraph end markers and convert to one in a single pass, while a text search must be run multiple times to catch the heavy handed author.

  • Clear or Override Forced Line Breaks?

This is probably really simple, but I searched the help file and didn't find it.
    - How do you clear all forced line breaks in a paragraph?
I'm editing text that we thought was fairly final, and I usually work in Preview mode as it's cleaner and easier to see what's going on. But I'm fearful of any forced line breaks that I may not know about that could mess up the paragraph flow after I make changes. The text is fully justified.
I know I can work in Normal mode and turn on 'View Hidden Characters' to see them. But even with that, they can sometimes be small and hard to see depending on the complexity of the type and how zoomed-in I am.
    - Isn't there a simple key command to override forced line breaks?
    THANKS!

OK. Thanks. I knew that would be an option, I just think I confused a couple other features with what I was hoping to do.
I may have been confusing 'Clear Local Overrides' when updating a paragraph style, and the ability to have certain things highlighted (custom tracking/kerning, glyphs, etc.), with an ability to clear forced line breaks with a simple key-command or palette menu item.
    Thanks, though.

  • Forced Line Break and Paragraph Return

Hi.. It´s maybe a simple question but I cannot see diferences.
What´s the difference between Forced Line Break and Paragraph Return ?
    Thank's for the answer

A force line break is still the same paragraph. You won't see a difference unless there is some text change with each new paragraph, such as a style change or the addition of space before or after a paragraph. The forced line break can also be used as a trigger in a nested style to make the first line or lines formatting for a paragraph different from the following lines.

  • Fix the forced line break bug already!

Illustrator has had the same bug since version 11. In 5 consecutive versions!
Forced line break in a justified text behave like a paragraph ending (Enter) aligning the line before the forced line break left. It looks like a new paragraph but it is just incorrectly aligned line in the middle of a paragraph.
Also Find & Replace recognizes only forced line break but (^n) not paragraph ending (^p) although both can be used in text.
Since discretionary hyphens do not have an effect whatsoever it requires a lot of manual editing to make typographically acceptable text block to the back of a book jacket.
So, Adobe. How hard is exactly fix this very annoying bug which has been reported dozens of times? It has even been demonstrated to your tech people who agreed that it really is a bug and should be fixed.

  • Forced *^$$#% Line Returns!

I have suffered this problem for too long now. It is in just
about everything I do, web design, blog editors what have you.
I would guess 90% of the time I do not want a line return
after I type a word or phrase.
Back in my FRONTPAGE days I got around that by using ADDRESS
    and then removing the italics.
In the project I am working on I cant use CSS because I am
    exporting it to something else.
Its a side bar with perhaps 40 graphics and 100 different
lines of words or phrases. I want to put in some HTML code at the
top and bottom to make ALL LINE RETURNS to away. FOREVER AND EVER!
So what am I missing here?
Is this going to be something really simple that is going to
    embarrass me?. :)

Not sure about the nasty webforum tags there, but this would
    be a standard
    paragraph of text.
    poopyhead<br>
This is an isolated line of text - invalid if not within some
    other
    container, like <p>, <h#>,
<div>,<td>, etc. - followed by a line break,
following HTML4x tag syntax. This line would be invalid on a
    page with an
    XHTML doctype.
    poopyhead<br />
Ditto above, except following XHTML tag syntax. This line
    would be invalid
on a page with an HTML doctype.

  • DefaultStyledDocument - JTextPane - Forcing Line Breaks

Well i have a defaultstyled document put into a JTextPane.
Now when the user puts text into it and it reaches the end of the
line in the jtextpane it auto word wraps down to the next line.
HOWEVER, it does not add a line break into the actual document, it is just what the jtextpane does or something.
What i want is to add a line break into the actual document once it reaches the end of the line and auto wraps down to the next line.
Any suggestions how to do this easily?

Move to top. Need a solution.

  • Captivate - Size of HTML5-published progress indicator forces line break

For some odd reason the first 9 questions of many of the quizzes we generated are rendered in HTML5 with a width smaller than what is show in Captivate.
    * We use the MCQ master slide to publish our questions
    * The width of the Progress indicator is 110
    * Oddly enough, the actual questions originally show different width values
    * I change the width to 110 on one of the questions and click the menu to 'Apply to all items of this type'
    * Ok... it appears that they all are changed to the same width
    * Publish the quiz. Questions 1-9 still show an incorrect size. e.g., the div width for question #1 is 86 and all the other params appear to be consistent with what is set in Captivate

This seems to be a caching issue when publishing to the same folder. I have been seeing (some?) of the same content each time I check for different results and not the newly generated content.

  • Why do text variables using Running Header character style translate forced returns as a word space in the running head on the first page but close up the space on subsequent pages?

In an InDesign document that requires 3 different Chapter head paragraph styles (to cope with differrent length headings) I've set up the running heads on the master page with a text variable using the Running header (character style) option. The character style I've assigned to this is an empty character style that is applied to all 3 chapter head paragraph styles.
Some chapter heads require a forced line break, so that the line breaks are aethesically pleasing. On the first page the text variable translates this forced line break as a word space in the running head, but on subsequent pages it ignores the forced line break. This means that if you have a word space before the forced line break, on the first page you get a double word space and on subsequent pages the running head sets correctly with a single word space. But if you remove the word space before the forced line break in the chapter head text, the first running head sets correctly with forced line break interpreted as a single word space, but on subsequest pages the space is closed up.
This only seems to be a problem when the character style option is used for header text variables. If a paragraph style is used the forrced line break is interpreted as a a single word space in all instances, both on the foirst page and subsequent pages.
This would appear to be a bug in how text variables are applied when using the Running header (character style) option. I can't see any other reason why the text variable would beheave differently on the first page and on subsequent pages. There is only one master page, so it isn't a case of their being an error between a main master page and a chapter opener master page.
Does anyone have any solutionss, or know if this problem has been fixed in subsequent releases of InDesign (I'm using CS6 ID version 8.0)
    Thanks

  • How to get a line break

    Hi All,
How do I get a line break within a particular field?
My DB structure is that I have 4 columns address_line_1, address_line_2 and so on. I cannot select them as different fields because all of them can be null, in which case i pick it from internal_address_line column.
    I use:
    SELECT DECODE(address_line_1, NULL, internal_address_line, address_line_1 || ', ' || Address_Line_2) as ADDRESS
But instead of th comma separating the 2 address lines I want a line break so that 2 address lines come in 2 separate lines in the output.
It doesn't allow me to use chr(10) as a line break and gives an error
    I'm using Reports 2.5
    TIA
    Naveen

    Yes, true.
How about setting up the sections as:
Section 1 Introduction ('Section num space introduction' in this example - tab may be better)
    Then generate the Contents.
Then do a GREP find/change on the document after the contents:
This will add a forced line break and tab after each section number... You might want to specify a para style in the Find Format box too, so that references to Section xx in body text are not altered.
If you update Contents after this, you will get the line break and tab in the Contents too.

  • Is there a way to allow for two lines in "running header (character style)" text variable?

In my "running header (character style)" text variables, some of the items are quite long and take up more space in my header than I have room for - because I have another "running header (character style)" text variable beside it - and I am trying to figure out if there is a way to force that text variable to go into two lines when it runs out of space.
Does anyone know if this is possible?

Sadly, only by adding a forced line break in the variable. Adobe’s engineers are unable to allow long variables to break at the end of a line. Sad, since this is a feature I remember from a Macintosh word processor I used in 1988.

  • How do I remove signs indicating space, line shift etc.

I must have done something stupid, for suddenly there are a lot of small devils, that indicate each space, forced line shift etc.
How do I get rid of them, before they drive me crazy?
    Thank you very much

    Oh, now I know why:
I have programmed Windows to start InDesign when I press ctlr-alt-i, sorry

  • Applying a style the nth line of any paragraph using GREP

    Hi,
I'm attempting to apply a character style to the third line of a paragraph that is broken with forced line breaks.
By doing a GREP search I can find the first two lines by using the following string:
    .*\n.*\n
So, I reasoned that by I'd be able to find the following line by using a positive lookbehind, but no dice. . .
    It doesn't work.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Chris

You don't need GREP for this if you are using CS4 or later.  Instead create a nested line style as part of the paragraph style definition (it's under Drop Caps and Nested Styles). Set none through n-1 lines, then your style through as many lines as you like.

  • Limit number of lines

I know how to limit the number of characters that a user can
input, but is there a way to limit the number of lines that a user
    can input into a textbox.

Firstly thanks kglad and KnowMind for your responses.
Why I wanted this. I have a textfield that a user fills in.
This text is then displayed in another textfield that can't be
scrolled at a later point. Therefore I need to limit the number of
lines that they use when filling in the first textfield so that it
will be fully displayed in the later textfield.
knowmind, your code works, but doesn't do what I wanted. as
it increases the size of the textfield being filled out, rather
    than limitting it.
kglad (as usual) you have done what I wanted, however if a
user tries to edit his work, eg, goes back to the top line and
clicks enter any line that goes over the height is lost and can't
be retrieved, which would be annoying. Therefore instead I am going
    to use the following code:
    commentTxt.maxChars=420;
    remForcedLines = commentTxt.text.split("\r").join(" ");
It simply removes any forced lines that are in textfield 1.
Therefore as long as maxChars is under the maxchars in textfield 2,
it will display fully. Obviously this wouldn't be particularly
practicle for large textfields but as you can see it is only 420
    chars long.
So thanks to both of you for your help. J.
