Formatting a book

Hi to all,
this is my first post on this forum and i'm writing for some advices. I have to format a quite long book made of a series of separate short paragraph. Each paragraph should have a marginal note (a box containing numbers) and a title. Besides a section of this book should be written into two columns to show the parallel traslation from an original latin text into another language. It would be nice having running headers according to the section titles.
In totally new in usign adobe indesing but i've some experience in using latex. In your opinion is indesign suitable for this purpose? Would it take a reasonable amount of time learnig how to use indesign ?
Sorry for my english.
Thanks
Paul

The Adobe Help, which you can launch from the application is great help full of resources also (just uncheck "search Adobe content" when searching). It will lead you to several good webpages, related to the topics you need. The project you mention is totally doable, you should make yourself familiar with text-variables for the running headers and most importantly look at paragraph styles and how they work in InDesign. Then text-frames and their threading. InDesign is a pretty straight-forward program, when you know how to work with word processors or have experience in formatting. LaTex might be a bit off the hook, since it has a completely different approach to dealing with formatting (InDesign is much more usable).

  • Formatting a book in Hindi

I’m in the process of formatting a book in Hindi. I’m getting the translation in Mangal font plain text. The original version in English has bold, italics and bolditalics. I’ve noticed that ID has only Mangal Regular (using Windows, CS6 8.0.1). Is there Mangal in bold, italics and bolditalics? I found out Adobe has a Devaganari font with all the variations. How different is that from Mangal?

Actually, I have sent the translator a format so his translation will be  in plain text and I do all the formatting here. But he sent me a PDF with a sample where I noticed he had bold, italics and bolditalics.
As Mike already pointed out, MS Word is happy to add a thin stroke around letters to fake a bold, and to tilt letters to fake an italic. That is why your translator's sample had bold and italics - because Word was faking it. If you are placing text from Word, there are ways to convert the fake-bolding and fake-italics to something you can use in ID - assuming that you are working in a font that has support for same.
My experience of Devanagari typesetting is not wide, but I am suprised to hear that italics are being used. The proper term here would be "obliques" for characters that have a lean to 'em. The term "italics" should, properly speaking, be reserved for "fonts that have an oblique special form that looks like the handwriting of Italian rich people from many hundreds of years ago." So nothing from the subcontinent should have "italics" applied, and I would raise an eyebrow at the use of obliques in Hindi anyways. But it may be totally normal to apply oblique in Hindi; it's not a language where I feel like I really understand the typographical standards.
FWIW, I can tell you that Mangal is a super-generic sans that I would never use for a book, as it was designed with reading on screens in mind, IIRC. It's ultra-bland. And, just like in Latin script, well-typeset books are not set in super-bland sans fonts designed to be legible onscreen at small font sizes.

  • How to export in pdf format a book including the front and back covers?

I am trying to save in pdf format a book created in lightroom but unfortunately the saved file contains only the internal pages but not the covers. Is maybe there any setting to do?
    Thanks bye,
    Alberto

Not directly from Lightroom unfortunately. I am assuming you want the pdf as the final output to send to people instead of a physical book from a commercial printing company. To achieve this you can fairly easily combine the pdfs outside of Lightroom. On the Mac, you can do this in Preview where you simply drag the page thumbnails between pdf documents. On a PC you need to use a program like Acrobat.

And if this is the new IOS Pages v2 (or the older IOS Pages 1.7.2), you click the wrench icon and then Document Setup. Tap the document header to edit it, and apply the same instructions that I gave previously for OS X Pages v5.
The process for Pages ’09 v4.3 is slightly different. You click the Header, and enter your document title and your name as previously described. You will need Menu > View > Show Ruler. Click once in the ruler at the first or second mark after the 7 inch (roughly 18cm). This will set a tab. Now position the insertion mark behind your title and tab once to the mark you set. Now you can Menu > Insert > Auto Page Numbers ...

  • Questions about using Styles Window for formatting a book in Apple Works.

Help says "You can create your own styles in any document type." Not clear on how to do that.
I wish to have one Style or group of Styles associated with one document of say 500 pages for a book. Each chapter Heading. as a single column layout, is separated by Section Breaks from previous and following text in 2 column layout.
Question 1. How do I make Styles window settings (Edit/Done) specific for this entire document? Can I edit settings in Styles window and have them remain specific and locked to this particular document? Or are the Styles window settings constant across all documents?
Question 2. (If Styles window settings are not specific and locked to this document) Do I need to make a NEW Style for each purpose within the document, as in Book Heading, Book Subheading, Book Body, Book special paragraph style, and etc.
Question 3. When importing multiple sections of the work (by copy and paste) from other AW documents how can I have the imported text follow the book’s Style settings (and vice versa how to keep tab settings that are specific in some areas). Sometimes the imported work refuses to conform to the Book document’s style say line spacing for instance.
    Thank you

    Hi Hilary,
I haven't used styles enough to give definitive answers to your questions, but I'm sure others will join in and correct any errors in what follows.
A "Style" is essentially a set of paragraph level format settings that can be collectively applied to a paragraph or contiguous set of paragraphs as a set, rather than having to apply each attribute individually. Once a style is applied to various parts of a document, changes made to the style specification will apply to every part of the document to which that style has been applied.
AppleWorks also includes two other types of Styles—Outline styles (Diamond, Harvard and Legal), used to identify hierarchical levels of paragraphs, and Table styles, used to format tables.
Question 1: From the Help article "Using Styles":
You can copy the collection of all the styles available in a document and make them available in another document. This is called exporting and importing a stylesheet.
I read this as saying that styles you create are specific to the document in which they are created, but may be exported to other documents. "Other documents" would includes documents saved as templates, which could be used to create the various sections of a book.
    Question 2:
As the set of styles is specific to the document it is created in (or into which it is imported), you can probably leave "Book " off the names of the styles (but may decide that leaving it on makes it easier to know what the styles are for). You will need to use an existing style or create a new one for each purpose within the document.
    Question 3:
Copy copies the text AND formatting of the selected material.
Paste pastes the text AND formatting of the selected material.
Paste also inserts the pasted material into the target document at the insertion point. All of the pasted material goes into the same Section. If the pasted material includes a section break, then a new section will be created in the target document.
If you export the set of styles from the master document and apply them to the parts of the source document before transferring the material to the master document, I suspect the formatting will be carried over.
Another possibility is to leave the source document with no formatting at all beyond paragraph breaks, and to apply the formatting (styles) after transferring the text.

  • Will an iPad work as a reader for a PDF formatted test book

The typical file I want to read is about 1000+ highly formatted pages and 400 MB.    Simple requirments I have are:
    1) Can I actaully see a page of text and read it.  I tried this on a Kindle and was forced to zoom in and then horizontally scroll a window around for EVERY line of text I read
    2) Say I'm reading in chapter 14 and I ned to review something from chapter 5.  Can I jump back to 5 and then return to 14 in some "reasonable" way?  Notice that scolling back and forth 850 pages using the finger swipe is not "reasonable".
I think those two requirements are basic and the minimum anyone would need.
Just today I walked in to an Apple store (Manhatten Beach, CA) with an example text book file on a flash drive and asked if I could read it on an iPad and they said (I'm NOT making this up!) that I would have to buy an iPad, take it home and see for myself.   No kidding, the ONLY thing I could look at in-store were the demo e-books that Apple has tested and found to work. I thought that was pointless because of course the demos work.  What I wanted to know was if the iPad can even display my MUCH larger and more complex real-world files.  They said "buy it first.", no kidding they did point out the two week retunr policy.  I was about to say "OK sell me 5 of everything in this store I'm going to set up a lab in the office for a week and invite a few dozen students to test it all then I'll return everything"   But while I might do that, what is the point of having a retail store.
So I ask here: Is anyone reading a university level science or math text book (introductary bio-chem and the like) on an Apple iDevice?
I am both a teacher and a student of this matrial so I have an interrest in both using and recommending readers.

Yes it can read PDFs.  But can it
    (1) jump to and back from a lace in the document 850 pages away and
    (2) display a typical bio-chem text book page s that it is readable including any side bars

  • Formatting mac book pro (no CD is provided)

I Bought Mac Book Pro just twom months ago (15-inch, Late 2011) and having so many errors because of very bad servicing centre .
I might need to format it and partition it also to download windows Xp also. My laptop came without CD and don't know how to do it.
the seller told me that the system instalation  is stored on the hard drive and I should save it on a USB but still confused
can any one help me .

    Hi:
I asked Apple support about this last week. They told me that in some cases they can help you do a system restore, even if you're having serious issues with your computer.
But, what I wanted was an actual disc, so that (like you) I could format my hard drive.
I was told they no longer provide copies of the operating system on disc. If you want it, you can either buy it on a thumb drive from the Apple online store for $69, or you can download it from the Apple Online store for $29 and either burn it to your own disc, or put it on your own thumb drive.
    Hope this helps.

  • I created a document in Pages. How can I get it published in a book format?

Looking to get my document formated into book form. Pictures and text have been created in Pages. Any advice in how to create a book from this document?

Speak to either your printer or publisher. Ask what their requirements are.
I think neither will be happy with Pages documents.
Exported .pdfs from Pages are not suitable for commercial output either.

  • Looking for some creative guidelines for book formatting

I am formatting a book, my first one, and am about to start refining the overall formatting to make it look beautiful. I'm running into a bit of a creative block, and am looking for some basic guidelines for book formatting. I'm wondering about fonts, how many to use, ideas about heading heiarchy's, fonts for tables relative to the rest of my text, etc.  I have everthing formatted, but it just looks ackward and ugly because I don't have a sensitivity to the standards.
Does anyone know of a resource where I could find some guidance on this?

  • Book format error

First time I uploaded this PDF to my iPad, it showed the "book format error" message.. i deleted it and then reuploaded.. IT WORKED, but only for a while, when syncing other books, it came back to the book format error thing.. what could be happening and how to solve this issue? it's a random school pdf thing, it shouldn't be copyright protected or something.

I checked a few of the other .pdfs I have in iBooks - no problem.
The issue occured with the 2 I created and imported today.
Created and uploaded them the same way as I have always done.
They synched fine to iPad, only when I went to open the files in iBooks, I got:
"Book Format Error - book can not be opened because format is not recognized or invalid"
Format is .pdf has always worked, still works on others, but not these two.
I don't know why or what is different this time.

  • Formatting book in progress in InDesign

Help!  I need an answer ASAP!  I have uploaded an formatted my book in InDesign from a letter-sized document from Word.  However, my book dimensions are 5.5 x 8.5 inches, not letter sized.  I set up the document for the correct book size, and changed the increments in preferences to inches to make sure.  However, the InDesign file is showing the same number of pages as my Word doc.  This should not be the case.  I need a accurate page count to complete the book cover ASAP.
I also need guidance on how to eliminate the additional pages in my InDesign book file that are not needed without inadvertantly deleting what I have created.  When I tried to reduce the number of pages in the file right now, I received a warning that "objects are on the pages that would be deleted, and if I wished to proceed."  Doesn't InDesign delete pages from the end of the document forward, rather than the start of the document?!  I am so confused.

You may have overset text. Go to the last page and click on the frame holding the text. Look at the bottom right for indication if the text is overset. If so, add a page, click on the outport for the overset frame, hold shift down and click on the page you just created. It will make as many pages as needed.

  • Sharing Photo Books Online

I created a photobook as a gift for my son's teacher. It was great, a success. Now many of my friends and colleagues want to a) view the completed book online and b) potentially order one themselves (from Apple, not me..)
Is there away to share photo books made in iPhoto 09 online? I am not as concerned about the ordering part ( although it would be nice not to be caught in the middle) as I am the sharing part. I have shared all of the raw photos via Gallery & mobileMe, but want to share the formatted & edited book. Any tips.... ?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You could do it like this: iPhoto Book as an iWeb Slideshow. You can even add music to play while the visitors are viewing the pages.
Or go as far as converting the book pages to a jpeg in iPhoto and then create an iPhoto MobileMe gallery. You can then send the URL for the gallery or embed it in an iWeb page like this: MobileMe Galleries
