Formatting a newspaper using Pages

Our school is an all-Mac school.  I would like to produce an 8-page school newspaper using Pages.  Has anyone else done this successfully? or should I give up and use InDesign instead?  We don't need advanced features, just simple textboxes and some wrapping around drawings or photos--no extended textboxes or jump-pages, and no fancy photo cropping or effects.   I would like for Pages to figure out the imposition for me so it will automatically produce the PDF to print 2 large sheets, duplex.
And while I'm on the topic of producing a newspaper, any suggestions about copy flow among multiple student writers and editors?  We are also a GoogleAppsForEducation school, so there might well be some google tools to help the early stages of copy preparation.

How do you intend to print the newspaper?
Inposition could be done manually in Pages but is usually done with the exported pdf file at the end of the job.
When I managed a large weekly color real estate magazine, I set up a simple system of nested folders containing all the editorial files, photos, graphics and ads which was held on a Server in a folder labelled Current Edition.
At the completion of the job the files were moved into the Archived Editions folder, along with pdf previews and notes on published material, in a Job folder labelled with the Edition date eg 2013 10 22 (NB the descending order left to right).
The Current Edition folder was then cleared out ready for the new edition. A permanent set of aliases were used to point from each workstation to the Current Edition & Archived Editions folders and hence their subfolders.
Artists and journalists could readily fish out older material and ads and duplicate them into the current folder as needed.
Writers should write in a basic TextEditor, eg TextEdit, not Pages as this encourages them to stick to the text and not formatting. Artists can use whatever they are comfortable with prepping the graphics for print.
If need be you can control access to folders using permissions.
The Layout Artist's role is to take the text, photos, graphics etc and import them into a prepared template for layout. The Editor offers directions as simple notes scribbled on a single thumbnail plan sheet, as to preferred placement of the articles and images and then reviews first rough layouts then more polished layouts as the edition is assembled.
Use signed, dated, printed copies to manage approvals. Digital copies have a habit of being duplicated and used to cross purposes out of approval order.
The system works because it is simple, organised and disciplined. Your school is unlikely to pay for the heavy publications management software used by Publishing Houses, because it doesn't need them.

  • Footnote formatting changed after using Pages on iPad

    Hi all,
I recently created a new document using Pages '09 on my iMac.  I then uploaded the document to iCloud so that I could work on it on my iPad.  I opened the document on the iPad, addded and changed some text and inserted some new footnotes.  When I went back to my iMac and downloaded the updated document and began working on it, I noticed that whenever I insert a new footnote the font size for the new footnotes is now 12, where before it had be 10.  Everything else seems to have stayed the same.  The font, type (regular, bold, etc.), just the size is now different.
Is there a setting in pages that I can go into and reset the default font size for footnotes to 10?
    Thanks in advance!

    Thanks Peter,
I just tried that and it seemed to partly work.
I tried creating a new footnote.  I then selected the text in the footnote, including the number, but there was no style name highlighted.
I then tried clicking on Footnote Text and it reformatted that note to the correct size (10 pt).
I then clicked on the little triangle and Redefine Style from selection and it changed most ot the footnotes in the document to what looks like superscript.  I say most, because as I page through there are some that did not change.  I think the ones that didn't change were footnotes that were already in the document before editing it on pages on the iPad.
So I undid everything and tried something else.  This time I only selected the text in the footnote, not the number.  There was still no style name highlighted.  I clicked on Footnote Text and it reformatted that note to the correct size (10 pt) again.  I then clicked the red triangle but Redefine Style was greyed out.
This is really behaving is a bizarre way from what I can see.  I'm not sure why only some footnotes would change and not others and why I can't just define a footnote style that used to be the default.

  • Pages is not saving document correctly.  After saving the changes either do not appear or you can not open the file. The error is "not a valid format"  I am in Pages '09 4.1 (923).  I also use Parallels.  Anyone having similar issues?

I'm not sure that Lion AutoSave feature apply to network servers.
I'm just sure that the Versions feature doesn't.

And if this is the new IOS Pages v2 (or the older IOS Pages 1.7.2), you click the wrench icon and then Document Setup. Tap the document header to edit it, and apply the same instructions that I gave previously for OS X Pages v5.
The process for Pages ’09 v4.3 is slightly different. You click the Header, and enter your document title and your name as previously described. You will need Menu > View > Show Ruler. Click once in the ruler at the first or second mark after the 7 inch (roughly 18cm). This will set a tab. Now position the insertion mark behind your title and tab once to the mark you set. Now you can Menu > Insert > Auto Page Numbers ...

  • Most compatable file type to use when copying and pasting specially formatted text into html pages?

    Hello,
I have a simple web site at http://www.psychicmeatloaf.com which is an online poetry journal site. I use files people send me (mostly .doc or .docx) and cut and paste the text from those files into html pages in an older version of Dreamweaver and some of the text has special formatting (like this page: http://www.psychicmeatloaf.com/Chang-poetry.htm ). The best way I have found to maintain the special text formatting is to open the .docx files and "save as a web page" in Word and then open the web page from Dreamweaver and then "Preview the page" in Explorer and copy and paste from the preview into an html page in Dreamveaver. Even using this method, some text will not maintain it's special formatting and for those I just save the page as a .jpg file and use that, because I have no other choice.
My question is, is there a better way and is there a better file type to work from other than .docx?
    Thanks a milliom,
    George

That's a lot of steps to get to a single end that could be done with a simple copy & paste of the text into code. Like Photoshop and Fireworks, Word writes some very bulky and dirty code. I wouldn't recommend it for direct copy by the method described above.
I personally copy the text and paste it into code view. It takes a little more work, but I don't get dozens of lines of inline styles added with it and using a preformatted post div (saved and hidden in the code (<!--post block code goes inside-->), I can quickly put title, date, byline and links up with a cut & paste.
    That's just my $0.02 worth
Also, since nearly EVERYONE will use a different formatting in a Word doc, putting a bunch of differently formatted posts into a page will make it look like one of those ransom notes made of cut out text from different newspapers and magazines.  Better to keep everything in a single format (your format) so it doesn't become an eyesore.

If so, how can I convert my PDF's to Pages so I can modify the documents?

    Hi Kathy,
I'm not very familiar with Pages, but I did just read on Apple's website that it does import .docx files. What happens when you open Pages, and then choose File > Open to open the .docx files?

Using Pages, how do I include occasional "landscape"-formatted pages (for large tables) into a long "portrait"-formatted document?

It can't be done in  Pages, hence you don't find the solution in Pages help!
You can rotate the table on the page instead. Press Cmd and drag the right lower corner 90 degrees

I am using Pages 09 to write a script/storyboard. I'm adapting the standard screenplay template but would like to drop in framed 19.2 x 10.8 masks (ideally with a black stroke round them) to drop visuals into. In a perfect world I'd be able to save them as a style or a custom shape, but I can't find any suggestions in help or forums. I would really appreciate some pointers. Here's a screenshot of the (small) progress so far :
Thanks in advance for looking at this - I really did spend time going through the help pages etc.

    Try this app: http://tyorex.com/iWorkConverter
Batch convert Pages files to doc and pdf.

The template is a document in itself, it is not applied to an existing document whether it is a Pages document or a Word document converted to a Pages document.
You would need to either copy and paste content, using existing styles, or apply the styles to the converted Word document.
You can Import the Styles from an existing document and those imported Styles can be used to override the current document's styles:
Menu > Format > Import Styles
The process is simplified if the styles use the same names, otherwise you will need to delete the style you don't want and replace it with the one that you do want when asked, then the substitution is pretty straightforward.

  • How to print multiple addresses on one sheet of avery labs using Pages?

How do I print mulitple addresses on one sheet of avery labels?

if i clear the book so that it is all blanks and then try to load in the pictures i have it loses the chronology of the pictures that i had established in the album.
is there a way to import photos into an ibook template and keep the original order of the photos without having to do them one at a time?
also, is there a way to insert a photo rather than just dragging it? i have tried the cut and paste funciton but it doesn't seem to work, the target site doesn't seem to register with iphoto.
    many thanks for your help.

Photos are added to book in chronological order.  So if you want to add them to a book in the order you have placed them manually in an album do the following:
1 - select all the photos in the album.
2 - use the Photos ➙ Batch Change ➙ Date menu option as shown here. Select any date and add 1 minute between photos.
3 - select just one photo from the album and create a book from it.
4 - in the book click on the Options button ➙ Book Settings button and make sure the checkbox for Auto-layout pages is unchecked.
5 - drag the album with your book photos onto the book icon and they will be imported into the Photos tray of the book in your pre-determined order but not into the pages themselves.
